Children at Rady Children’s Hospital got a super treat when Captain America and Spiderman came to wash windows on Halloween.

Along with Captain America and Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and The Flash made the young patients smile on Monday.

The window washers were from A Plus Window Cleaning and the masquerade is a Halloween tradition.

“Any time you can make a kid smile, that’s a cool gig,” said window washer Andy Alvarez, who came dressed as Spiderman.

Alvarez said the kids loved seeing the superheroes, many breaking out into big smiles or giving them high fives.

That’s the reason the window washers come to Rady every day.

“Being here and seeing all these characters makes her happy,” mom Sillia Feliciano said of her young daughter.

Search Continues for Man Accused in 2 Violent Sex Assaults

Authorities are asking for the public's continued help in finding an 'armed and dangerous' suspect wanted in connection with two violent sexual assaults, more than two months after the assaults occurred.

Jeremiah Williams, 24, is wanted for two August attacks: the University City sex assault and another assault that happened the day after at a Motel 6, according to San Diego Police Department Capt. Brian Ahearn.

Authorities are asking for the public's continued help in finding the suspect.

“We are still working the case and following up on leads that continue to come in," said SDPD Lt. Paul Phillips. He said they continue to work with the U.S. Marshal's Service.

Williams is described as being 5-foot, 11-inches and 180 pounds. He has the numbers "210" tattooed on his right wrist and an outline of the State of Texas tattooed on his left forearm. He also has wings tattooed on both upper arms.

Anyone who sees Williams is asked to call 911. Police believe he is still in the San Diego area.

Physical evidence from the scene of the first University City sex assault linked Williams as the suspect, Ahearn said.

The University City sex assault happened on Saturday, Aug. 13 when a woman was attacked at the Venetian Condominiums on Nobel Drive.

The woman had been dropped off outside the complex around 10:30 p.m. and was walking to her apartment when she thought someone was following her.

Before the victim could unlock her door, the man knocked her to the ground and asked her for money at gunpoint. After giving him the money, the woman was dragged into her apartment where police say she was beaten and sexually assaulted.

Three days after that incident, San Diego Police were called to Sharp Memorial Hospital for a report of a separate attack. A 23-year-old woman told police she had been violently sexually assaulted on Sunday, Aug. 14 at a Motel 6 on Alvarado Canyon Road in Mission Valley.

"The suspect, who she had recently met, entered her room choked and sexually assaulted her and then hit her in the head with a hand gun," Ahearn said.

After the interview, sex crimes detectives went to the motel and collected evidence.

During their investigation, detectives found that officers initially responded to the incident at the motel as a report of a man hitting a woman.

Witnesses told police Sunday night they heard the victim yell for help, and the suspect fled on foot.

The Motel 6 manager told NBC 7 that the victim smashed a window in the room and drove off in a car before police arrived at the scene.

In a strange twist, investigators say police officers had the suspect in handcuffs after the second attack but weren't aware of the allegations until days later when the victim came forward.

Authorities located the suspect in a nearby canyon with a hand gun, Ahearn said. Initial statements given to California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers placed Williams at the scene, and he was cited with a misdemeanor gun charge and released.

It was only days later that police linked Williams as the suspect in the motel sex assault.

Physical evidence and victim interviews linked Williams to the Motel 6 sex assault and to the University City sex assault, Ahearn said.

The suspect remains at large; he is considered armed and dangerous. He has a criminal background in California and Texas.

Close to 10,000 people are expected to take part in one of San Diego's premiere Dia de los Muertos celebrations in historic Old Town.

"It's a big, big party! We like to celebrate death, instead of being sad, we like happiness, we like to party, we like to celebrate!" says San Diego resident Daniela Ebarra.

The Dia de los Muertos festival, November 1 - 2, celebrates the life and death of lost loved ones. According to event organizers, Dia de los Muertos is one of the most important holidays in Mexico and many South American countries.

"Day of the Dead is a happy moment. It's a way to celebrate those people that left us among the living and a remembrance of community and family," said Elia Smith of San Diego's Day of the Dead organization.

"It's a remembrance of all those that have passed on and during this holiday it is believed that their spirits come back," said Robert Barros, promoter for Day of the Dead festivities.

The highlight of the two-day event, takes place November 2nd at 6 p.m., when a procession will depart the Catholic church and head to the El Camp Santo Cemetery in Old Town.

"It's free," Barrio said. "People can come down and view the procession from the side of the street, or they can join in the procession."

The Dia de los Muertos festivities will feature live music, food, drinks, face painting, artisan shows, sugar skull workshops and many other activities.

Comey Opposed Blaming Russia for Hacking, Citing Election

FBI Director James Comey privately argued that it was too close to Election Day for the United States government to name Russia as meddling in the presidential race and ultimately ensured that the FBI's name was not on the document that the U.S. government put out, a former FBI official tells CNBC.

Comey's position, according to the official, was "if it is said, it shouldn't come from the FBI, which as you'll recall it did not."

In the end, the Department of Homeland Security and The Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued the statement on Oct. 7, saying "The U.S. intelligence community is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of emails from US persons and institutions," CNBC reported.

Government insiders are perplexed as to why Comey would have election timing concerns with the Russian disclosure but not with the Huma Abedin email discovery disclosure he made Friday.

Obamas Host Last White House Halloween

The president and first lady hosted their final Halloween party at the White House Monday afternoon.

The first couple welcomed students from D.C., Virginia and Maryland schools, as well as children of military families, to trick-or-treat at the South Portico of the White House.

More than 4,000 people were expected at this year’s Halloween festivities, according to a statement from the Office of the First Lady.

For this year's theme, the White House and surrounding grounds were transformed into A Storybook Journey, which included decorations and performances inspired by classic tales such as "Mother Goose," "Peter Pan," "Alice in Wonderland," "The Wizard of Oz" and "Peter Rabbit."

Students from the Joy of Motion Dance Company led a flash mob to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." The Obamas joined in from the sidelines, showing off their own "Thriller" moves.

The president handed out White House Hershey's Kisses while the first lady handed out cookies.

In addition, an assortment of treats were also provided, including White House M&Ms, fruit bars, kettle corn, and Bo and Sunny baseball cards.

"Because you being up all night with a sugar rush is exactly what your parents want," Obama joked.

The president took mock offense to one trick-or-treater's President Obama costume, which included silver spray-painted hair.

"Is this supposed to be me?" Obama asked. "Man, I'm not that grey yet."

Want to add some White House style to your own Halloween party? The official White House Halloween press release included the "official" White House Halloween cookie recipe:

  • 1 lb. sugar
  • 2 lbs. butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 lbs. all-purpose flour

Mix the butter and sugar till soft and well beaten. Then add eggs, vanilla, salt and half the flour. Beat on slow speed till mixed, then add the rest of the flour and mix until incorporated.

Push flat onto a cookie sheet and refrigerate overnight. Roll out to one quarter inch thick and cut out cookie shapes with cookie cutter.

Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 14 minutes and allow to cool.

FBI Inquiring Into Ex-Trump Aide's Foreign Ties

The FBI has been conducting a preliminary inquiry into Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort's foreign business connections, law enforcement and intelligence sources told NBC News Monday.

Word of the inquiry, which has not blossomed into a full-blown criminal investigation, comes just days after FBI Director James Comey's disclosure that his agency is examining a new batch of emails connected to an aide to Hillary Clinton.

And it comes a day after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid criticized Comey's revelation and asserted that Comey possesses "explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors, and the Russian government."

The FBI did not comment. Manafort told NBC News "none of it is true ... There's no investigation going on by the FBI that I'm aware of."

Flames as high as 100 to 150 feet tore through a multi-million dollar home in Rancho Santa Fe Sunday.

Smoke alarms may have save the lives of the tenant and his dog.

The two-alarm fire broke out on Avenida Alondra at 11:20 p.m. in the back of the 5500-square foot home.

Jan McEachern lives a few doors down and saw what she described as flames 100 to 150 feet high.

“A huge, huge ball of flames,” McEachern said.

The intense fire collapsed the home's roof.

There is a lot of distance between fire hydrants in the Rancho Santa Fe community. The hydrant closest to the home on fire was dead, according to fire officials, and the nearest one was approximately 1,000 feet away.

Fire crews had to pump in water to fight the fire.

When firefighters arrived two main rooms were on fire. From there, the fire spread very quickly throughout the home.

A fire that damaged student documents inside a San Diego-area middle school is under investigation, San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials said Monday.

Fire broke out inside the administration building at Oak Crest Middle School on Balour Drive at approximately 3:40 a.m. Saturday, setting off the fire alarm system.

When firefighters arrived, they could see flames shooting from the windows of the building.

The school’s counseling and attendance offices sustained the bulk of the damage. On Monday, staff members set up offices in rooms near the library. The principal said he is trying to keep school running as normal despite the damage.

Images released by the principal show extensive fire damage to the administrative offices including holes in the roof. No classrooms were affected.

As of Monday morning, sheriff's investigators said evidence has been sent to a lab. They'll wait for results before classifying the fire as intentional.

Oak Crest Middle School is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District.

Chargers Fans Have Highest Arrest Numbers in NFL

0
0

Qualcomm Stadium sees the highest average of arrests resulting from fan violence of any stadium in the NFL, according to a newly released report by The Washington Post.

Still, the report indicates the high number may have more to do with the stadium’s zero tolerance policy than an inordinate amount of violence.

Between 2011 and 2015, the San Diego Chargers saw an average of 24.6 arrests per game. The New York Giants came in second with an average of 22.5 arrests.

That’s a far cry from the teams that had the fewest fan arrests, such as the Seahawks, Buccaneers and Bears, which all saw an average of .8 arrests.

Before you think Chargers fans are incrementally worse than other NFL fans, consider this: the report highlights how police at Qualcomm Stadium implemented stricter policies in 2013 after a parking lot brawl, where glass bottles were thrown.

The report states that the increase in arrests was a byproduct of the franchise’s zero-tolerance policies.

Kids Twice as Likely to Be Hit by Car When Walking: Report

0
0

A jump in the number of crashes involving teens in the U.S. has researchers taking a closer look at distracted driving and walking.

A newly released report from Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit safety group, finds that distracted walking and distracted driving are the two biggest threats for students walking to school.

Parents like Dorothy Grootonk say the numbers are concerning, especially on a day when kids will be filling up streets trick-or-treating for Halloween.

"It is a bit of a concern having the drivers, especially in our neighborhoods, they're a little crazy sometimes," said Grootonk.

According to the new report, deadly crashes involving teens walking have increased 13 percent in the last two years across the nation.

For the study, researchers observed a group of nearly 40-thousand walkers going to and from school.

Researchers saying there is an increased chance of drivers hitting walkers, but drivers aren't the only ones at fault.

"What we saw was pretty alarming about the kids," Kate Carr, with Safe Kids worldwide, said. "They were not paying attention to just the rules of the road, but more importantly they were distracted. Whether they had headphones on, whether they were texting, talking sometimes doing all three. Of course coupled with distracted drivers."

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, nearly 90 percent of teens own cell phones, compared to just 44 percent in 2004.

Carr says it's leading to some serious consequences across the country.

The report also found that nearly half of distracted teens walking to and from school were most likely to be wearing headphones. A third of those distracted were on their phones texting.

"I kind of worry that it might be a problem for the kids wearing darker costumes," Grootonk said. "I just hope that they put it away for a little while you know, pay attention to what's going on."

Grandma Falls Victim to Scam, Buys $64K in MoneyPak Cards

0

Law enforcement authorities served nine warrants in eight states and arrested 20 people in an international fraud and money-laundering investigation late last week.

The so-called "Grandmother Scam" has tricked at least 15,000 people into shelling out more than $300 million. One of them was a retired school teacher living in National City, California.

Beth Baker, 86, fell victim to the scam artists two years ago, according to San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis.

Within one week, Baker gave criminals $64,000 of her life savings.

Baker's case is part of the first-of-its kind nationwide takedown. The Justice Department announced charges Thursday against 61 defendants in the United States and abroad in connection with call center operations based in India.

Callers posing as tax and immigration agents threaten arrest, deportation or other punishment unless money is sent to help clear up what they say is a deportation warrant or to cover supposedly unpaid income taxes.

In Baker's case it was her grandson who the caller said was in trouble in Peru and needed bail money. Then he needed money for an attorney, the callers told her.

Each time, Baker went to stores around San Diego County to purchase MoneyPak cards of $1,000 each. She would then go back home and wait for the call so she could relay the numbers from the back of the card to the man on the other end of the phone.

“If there’s one thing to cause a grandmother to do something she wouldn’t ordinarily do it’s to protect her grandchildren,” her son, Jim Baker explained  Monday in San Diego.

The federal government says scams like the so-called "Grandmother Scam" that's tricked at least 15,000 people into shelling out more than $300 million.

Dumanis said they believe there are "many, many other local victims."

"Our investigation followed Miss Baker's money as it was laundered through a spiderweb of dozens of co-conspirators across the U.S. and eventually to foreign countries like Iran and India," Dumanis said.

As agents fanned out across the country to make arrests, officials in Washington said they wanted to alert the public that the calls are all part of a scam.

“This crime is not going away. This crime is escalating,” Deputy District Attorney Paul Greenwood said.

Investigators want the public to know the U.S. government never demands money be loaded onto prepaid cards.

“One of the problems we face is that too many victims who fall for a scam never report it because they’re too embarrassed,” Greenwood said.

Baker said children should take his family's experience and talk with their parents to avoid anyone else falling victim. He said his mother had missed some visits with his father while she was driving around collecting the cards. That could've been a clue for him as to what was going on.

Also, he was grateful to a bank manager who pulled his mother aside when she asked for a $14,000 loan - something very out of character for her.

The bank manager started asking her questions. That led to the realization that Baker had fallen victim to a scam.

The indictment, which was issued last week in Houston, charges the defendants — which include five call centers — with crimes including wire fraud, money laundering and false impersonation of an officer of the United States.

Greenwood said federal officials should provide more grants and other resources to local law enforcement officers to help uncover more victims in these types of scams.

The Cajon Air Center at Gillespie Field Airport went from plan to project on Monday as County Officials broke ground on the first phase of construction.

Carrying an estimated $6,500,000 price tag, the Cajon Air Center project includes construction of an underground basin, drainage improvements, and a new apron area and taxiways. Additionally, 55 acres of land will be made available for private development of aviation facilities.

Elements of the first phase of the project include construction of the basin and grading work for the aviation-use lots.

“Gillespie Field Airport today directly generates $400 million annually with 3,200 jobs,” County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said. “Once this project is complete the figures are expected to grow to $530 million in direct annual revenue and 4,190 jobs.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) offered a 90 percent match for total project cost the first phase, while the rest of the funding comes from the County’s Airport Enterprise Fund.

According to the County Communications Office, timing and phasing of the remaining project elements will depend on the FAA’s funding priorities.

Suspects Accused of Kidnapping Federal Officer Arraigned

Two men accused of kidnapping a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, who was trying to stop the men from stealing his bike, pleaded not guilty to related charges.

Adan Bustos and Arisdelsi Sanches, 23, are facing multiple charges.

Bustos is charged with petty theft, receiving stolen property, hit-and-run driving, attempting unlawful take and drive a vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and kidnapping. Sanches is charged with attempt unlawful take and drive a vehicle and receiving stolen property.

Bail was set at $500,000 for Bustos and $100,000 for Sanchez.

The incident happened at approximately 7:10 a.m. Friday at the officer's home near Narragansett Avenue and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard in San Diego's Ocean Beach community.

The officer witnessed the suspect from the second floor of his home take a bike from his backyard and place it in the back of a Chevy pick-up truck. The officer then grabbed his badge and confronted the suspect outside his home.

SDPD says there were two suspects inside the truck, identified as Bustos and Sanches. Bustos had been the one to steal the bicycle while Sanches waited in the truck.

When the officer approached Bustos and Sanches and identified himself, they drove off. That's when the officer jumped into the bed of the truck.

SDPD said the suspects drove onto the freeway and exited in the downtown area of San Diego, driving more than seven miles before stopping. The officer was able to call police using his cell phone.

Bustos then crashed the truck into a large concrete planter box located near 4th Avenue and K Street in downtown. Police say the officer was able to get out of the truck at this time.

Police say Sanches also got out when the truck stopped and ran away. She was later arrested near 500 K Street.

Bustos drove away, stopped at 6th Avenue and K Street where the truck rolled backward and crashed into a parked vehicle. He then took off on foot and got into a taxi near 6th Avenue and L Street, according to police.

Officers stopped the taxi at 600 Harbor Drive and arrested Bustos.

Police say the Chevy pick-up Bustos and Sanches had been driving was a stolen vehicle. Both suspects were booked into jail on several felony charges.

It is unclear if the officer was injured.

Clinton Ahead by 6 Points Going Into Final Stretch: Poll

With a little over a week left in before the general election, Hillary Clinton is leading Donald Trump 47-41 in a four-way general match-up among likely voters, according to a new NBC NewsSurveymonkey weekly tracking poll.

Clinton's lead stretches to seven, 51 to 44, if Gary Johnson and Jill Stein are left out of the polling, NBC News reported Monday.

The results are nearly identical from the prior week, before FBI Director James Comey announced the discovery of emails that could be "pertinent" to the department's investigation of Clinton's private email server.

While the poll was conducted from October 24-30, the data for Saturday and Sunday only — when questions about Comey's announcement were included — still showed Clinton with the same lead.

Border Patrol Agent Assaulted in Calexico

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was assault when he tried to arrest a man he saw illegally enter the U.S. in Calexico, California, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

The assault, the second in a week, happened Sunday at approximately 8:40 p.m. when the officer, assigned to the Calexico station, responded to an immigration violation near Downtown Calexico.

The agent was parked on First Street, next to the International Boundary fence, when he saw the suspect climb over the fence.

When the agent tried to arrest the man, he resisted and struck the agent's left orbital eye socket with his elbow, CBP officials said.

The suspect then fled, but the agent followed and soon caught up. There was a short scuffle and the agent eventually subdued the man and arrested him, CBP agents said.

“Our agent thankfully only suffered minor injuries from this assault and was able to gain control of his attacker and make the arrest,” said David S. Kim, Assistant Chief Patrol Agent, in a statement. “We will not tolerate assaults on our agents by criminals, and will vigorously pursue Assault on a Federal Officer prosecution against anyone who perpetrates such violence.”

The suspect will be charged with assaulting a federal agent, a felony punishable by fine of incarceration.

The agent suffered a contusion to his eye, a laceration to his elbow and a possible shoulder injury.

Since Oct. 1, there have been eight reported assaults on El Centro Sector agents.

CBP officials ask anyone to suspicious activity to the Border Community Threat Hotline at 1-800-901-2003.

El Cajon Residents Concerned Over Possible Contamination

0
0

An El Cajon neighborhood is concerned over the effects of possible toxins in the air and groundwater near their homes.

The affected area covers approximately two miles, stretching from Greenfield Drive all the way to Gillespie Field.

Residents living on the 700 block of Greenfield Drive, near Magnolia Elementary School told NBC 7 they received a notice from the San Diego Water Board informing them of voluntary testing for possible contaminants.

According to the notice, there will be an investigation and cleanup at the location where the former aerospace facility, Ketema/AMETEK, was based. The company, opened in the 1950s, dumped chemicals into the groundwater, which caused contamination.

Testing in 1987 ledto the discovery of chlorinated solvents in the groundwater. Since then, environmental agencies have been monitoring the soil and groundwater, as well as taking steps to clean up the contamination.

NBC 7 talked to people who live in Greenfield Mobile Estates in El Cajon who said they are worried the groundwater around their homes and the air they breathe is contaminated. Some added that they wonder if the chemicals could cause cancer.

“It has always been in the back of our minds and now it's kind of scary because we're getting letters from the water board wanting to do samples,” said El Cajon resident Victoria Masters. “I've got a 10-day old baby that we just brought home, so you know is he going to be affected?”

"I certainly wouldn't let my granddaughter drink that water and now that I think about it, I should give the dogs bottled water," said Teri Melfa.

But the San Diego Water Board said there is no immediate health risk and that the levels of chlorinated solvents have decreased over the years. They installed 60 groundwater monitoring wells as part of the investigation and cleanup efforts.

Since the Helix Water Department provides water to the City of El Cajon, the groundwater is not used for drinking water.

Magnolia Elementary School, which has been tested for contaminants in the soil and air since 1994, has been deemed safe for students and staff.

Ketema/Ametek is now leading the testing under the supervision of the San Diego Water Board and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTCS). The testing is expected to start in the coming weeks.
