A wind-driven, 3,400-acre wildfire raging in western Nevada has destroyed 22 properties and is still threatening about 500 others, NBC News reported.

Almost 900 firefighters have been tackling the Little Valley Fire, between Reno and Carson City, which authorities said was only 20 percent contained by Saturday night.

Residents east of Washoe Lake have been allowed to return home. Other neighborhoods have been permitted but told they might have to evacuate again Sunday.

"It's absolutely devastating," Dennis Hof, owner of the state's famous Bunny Ranch brothel, who said there was "nothing left" of his home.

"The only thing you see is the foundation and a washer and dryer than didn't burn up. That's it," he told the station.

At least one missile was fired on U.S. Navy destroyer USS Mason in international waters off Yemen’s coast, but the ship deployed countermeasures and was not struck, U.S. officials told NBC News Saturday.

The incident, which occurred late Saturday or early Sunday local time, is the latest in a string of recent missile attacks on the destroyer from rebel-held areas of Yemen.

Two attacks earlier in the week prompted the U.S. military to launch cruise missiles, which destroyed three radar sites. A Defense Department official said this week that those who fire on U.S. vessels do so at their peril.

The two-year-long conflict in Yemen has resulted in more than 4,000 civilian deaths, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said Monday.

Rick Valenzuela was standing just 20 feet away from where a pickup truck slammed into a crowd of people in Chicano Park after flying off the Coronado Bridge Saturday afternoon, killing four people and injuring nine.

“I heard a crash and I looked up and see this Chevy pick-up flying off the freeway. It flew, it just flew through the air,” Valenzuela said.

Valenzuela and his friend Hugo Perez were quick to act, racing over to the truck along with several other people.

“We all ran over there and tried to get the truck off the people,” Perez said.

“[It] took quite a few of us to lift that truck and flip it over to get those people loose from underneath the truck,” Valenzuela said.

Andrew Gonzales was one of several people who moved the truck to help the driver get out.

“We ran to the truck, we flipped it over, opened the window and three of us guys pulled him out. I was one of the main ones that stood with them,” Gonzales said. “That’s your natural instinct to make sure that a person is okay … It wasn’t only me, there were a lot of us.”

“[I] yanked my friend away and his wife, sat them down. [Tried] to ask for the police, where the police are, they started showing up,” Perez added.

Perez and Valenzuela spent the evening at UCSD Medical Center looking after one of their friends who was hurt in the crash.

“I’m surprised my friend is here right now,” Valenzuela told NBC 7. “But he’s okay. He’s talking, no broken bones and everything, so he’s all right.

At least four people were killed and several others were injured Saturday when a truck traveling on the Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego veered off the road and flew 60 feet off the bridge, landing on a crowd gathered at a park below.

The crash happened just after 3:30 p.m. PT off the bridge and near the 1900 block of Julian Avenue. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Jake Sanchez said the person behind the wheel of the pickup truck, suspected of driving under the influence, hit a guard rail, rolled and landed on a crowd of people at Chicano Park. The park sits below the entrance of the bridge from Interstate 5, in Barrio Logan.

Among the four people killed were a man, 62, and a woman, 50, from Chandler, Arizona, and a man, 59, and a woman, 49, from Hacienda Heights in Los Angeles County.

One witness told NBC 7 he heard truck screeching as it plowed into the park below.

“I [saw] that truck come flying off the ramp here and onto the people that were underneath them. I was that close to them,” he said. “It’s terrible.”

Another witness, Dolores D'Angelo, was attending the festival at Chicano Park, where she was scheduled to perform with a band. Suddenly, she saw debris and dust flying off the bridge, then saw parts of the car scattered everywhere.

"Pieces of car parts were flying all over the place. When we got up, we turned around, everybody started running over there because we realized, there were people sitting there – there were people sitting right there," D'Angelo described.

"We were trying to get in to see if we could maybe lift up the car, move the car out of the way to see if we could get the people out. There were so many people crowded by then,” she added. “I was trying to call 911 and I think I called it like four times and I don’t know that I ever hit ‘send’ properly because I got really nervous; I got really scared.”

"I saw a car flying through the air, right off the bridge. It looked like -- I couldn't see anybody driving the car. It looked like as if Superman had thrown a car right off the bridge. It was just flying down," D'Angelo added.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and CHP confirmed that at least four people were killed in the crash. Police said two others suffered major injuries and at least seven other people suffered minor injuries.

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Richard Anthony Sepolio, is alive, police said, but critically injured. He was hospitalized and arrested on suspicion of DUI, Sanchez said. He has been charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury or death and other charges related to significant injury of others.

According to CHP, Sepolio is an active duty service member with the Navy stationed in Coronado.

As dozens of first responders filled the park, medics began treating those with minor injuries at the scene and rushing those with critical injuries to UC San Diego Medical Center, Scripps Mercy Hospital and Sharp Coronado.

Debris was strewn about the crash site; blood could be seen on the sidewalks.

"It's horrible, it's horrific," said Sanchez, describing the scene. "There's people down below, bodies -- just innocent people that are just down here having a good time and now they're gone. We feel for their families."

Southbound Interstate 5 leading to the Coronado Bridge was shut down to traffic immediately following the deadly crash; both inbound and outbound traffic on the Coronado Bridge was also shut down.

[[397204441,C]]

By 4:40 p.m., the Coronado Police Department confirmed that the roads were reopening and traffic was moving once again, slowly.

Police said there were more than 100 people at Chicano Park at the time of the deadly crash, as a festival was taking place.

'Death Right in Front of Us’: Witness Describes Bridge Crash

Thousands of people were enjoying the La Raza Ride, a motorcycle festival at Chicano Park Saturday afternoon, when a pickup truck flew off the Coronado Bridge landing right on top of a vendor’s table and killing four people.

"I saw a car flying through the air, right off the bridge. It looked like -- I couldn't see anybody driving the car. It looked like as if Superman had thrown a car right off the bridge. It was just flying down," Dolores D'Angelo, who has been singing with a band performing at the festival, said.

Suddenly, she saw debris and dust flying off the bridge, then saw parts of the car scattered everywhere.

"Pieces of car parts were flying all over the place. When we got up, we turned around, everybody started running over there because we realized there were people sitting there – there were people sitting right there," D'Angelo said. "We were trying to get in to see if we could maybe lift up the car, move the car out of the way to see if we could get the people out. There were so many people crowded by then,” she said breathlessly.

D’Angelo said she attempted to call 911 several times, but wasn’t sure if she got through because she was so nervous.

“I heard a crashing sound,” witness Isaac Cardoza said. “At first I thought it was a really loud motorcycle coming into the show or something. For some reason I just looked up there. I see a big mass of something up in the air. I personally thought it was a big piece of cardboard flying. Eventually, once it started flying more over the stage I realized it was a car backwards, facedown. It landed right on two booths…It landed and instantly crushed them.”

Cardoza said as soon as the truck landed the crowd ran over to try to help the victims.

“The whole crowd running to go over there and try and help out with the truck, lift it up, trying to get the people pinned in there,” he said. “I was in a state of shock, unbelievable. I was like a movie.”

George Rodriguez was also enjoying the festival with his friends.

“We heard a big crash just on the side of the freeway coming north and the truck flew off and it landed on this tent where these people were just sitting there having a good time, killed em all! It was horrible. Just death right in front of us!” he exclaimed. “Just to see that, I’ll tell you, we’re tough as nails, but to see that just broke us, to see that, just broke us, man.”

David Mendoza and his girlfriend were looking at T-shirts at a booth just before the truck crashed.

“There was a vendor selling T-shirts. We were looking at the T-shirts, we walked away. No sooner did we walk away the truck comes over the bridge and lands right on that vendor’s booth. Our first reaction was to run to the vehicle and see what happened and then our second reaction was to get away because we saw bodies underneath the truck and it scared us to death,” he said. “We got away just in time. I’ll tell ya.”

Rick Valenzuela and Hugo Perez helped pull the truck off people trapped underneath. A couple of their friends were injured in the crash.

“[It] took quite a few of us to lift that truck and flip it over to get those people loose from underneath the truck,” Valenzuela said. “You see four people laying there and they’re dead, and their body parts are broken, which they were twisted, broken, arms and legs. It’s not good … I feel for them and their families.”

“We all ran over there and tried to get the truck off the people,” Perez said. “We all pretty much took action. Whatever we could we did … Flipped the truck over, yanked my friend away and his wife, sat them down.”

Perez said eventually the police arrived and took over. Valenzuela and Perez explained their friends were bruised but weren’t seriously hurt.

“He’s pretty jacked up but he’s talking. No bones broken and everything, but he got pretty bumped up,” Valenzuela said of one friend.

“It was a bad situation,” Perez told NBC 7. “The people that passed on, we send out our prayers to their family. And all we can do is be grateful nobody else got hurt.”

North Korea has reasserted a warning that it is prepared to launch a preemptive strike on the United States if its forces mobilize against it, NBC News reported.

Such threats have been a staple of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un since he took power after his father's death in 2011. U.S. officials do not believe Pyongyang possesses weapons able to reach the continental United States.

"The U.S. has nuclear weapons off our coast, targeting our country, our capital and our Dear Leader, Kim Jong Un," a top North Korean official, Lee Yong Pil, said in an exclusive interview with NBC News.

Lee said his government's stance was being driven by "the increasingly aggressive" drills by the United States and the South.

FBI Director Discusses Police, Community Tensions in SD

FBI Director James Comey hosted a discussion at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference (IACP) in San Diego.

Comey spoke to law enforcement at the convention center about the tension in some minority neighborhoods. He feels that keeping better track of use of force incidents will improve relations and ultimately make their job a lot safer.

“We especially need to show America, especially people of color and especially the black community what we are really like,” Comey said Sunday.

While Comey said that police officers are overwhelmingly good people, he admitted there are some cops who see men of color as criminals.

“That’s dumb. That unjust, and we have to work to constantly resist it, to train it out, to root it out,” he continued.

[[397240531, C]]

Comey said he also fears that if officers are viewed as biased, it will hurt recruitment.

“This country will be deeply, deeply sorry if great young talent, kids who want to help other people, choose some other way to serve,” he said.

The FBI will launch a pilot project next year to collect use of force numbers nationwide, the hope being it will remove the stigma of racial bias and improve community relations.

The conference, which started earlier this week, brings together federal, state, county, local and tribal law enforcement agencies across the country together to discuss educational tools and resources to better serve their communities.

After being kidnapped by Boko Haram more than two years ago, 21 Nigerian girls were reunited Sunday with their families, NBC News reported.

"I want to thank everyone for this wonderful thing they have done," one of the girls, Rebecca Mallam, told the Voice of America as she rejoined relatives Sunday in Abuja, the capital.

The liberation of the so-called "Chibok girls" — whose abduction triggered the #BringBackOurGirls campaign — came after negotiations between the government and Boko Haram, said Mallam Garba Shehu, a Nigerian government spokesman.

Shehu didn't say what Boko Haram received in return, but the BBC reported that the government handed over four imprisoned militants as part of the deal.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said Monday that he will vote in this year's presidential election, but he is staying tight-lipped about who he'll vote for.

Speaking with WEEI-FM radio, Brady said he would open up after the election.

When asked about his friendship with Republican nominee Donald Trump and if Trump in person is unlike his appearances on television, Brady said, "He's been a friend of mine. He's supported our team. He's supported the Patriots. He's been on the Patriots sideline a lot. He's always called me after games to encourage me over the course of 15 years. That's kind of the way it is."

He added that the two have played golf together many times. "I've always had a good time with him."

Brady's friendship with Trump has come up several times during the election, most recently last week when necn reporter Jonathan Choe asked him how he would respond if his kids heard Trump's version of "locker room talk."

Brady smiled and said, "Thank you guys. Have a good day," before walking away from the podium. The non-response generated headlines across the country.

The quarterback has known Trump since 2002, when Brady served as a judge for one of Trump's beauty pageants.

Trump was vocal in his defense of Brady throughout the "Deflategate" ordeal, praising him repeatedly while on the campaign trail.

Police Shoot Man Pointing Gun at Them in Vallejo Starbucks

Two Vallejo police officers shot a man dressed in body armor and pointing an assault style weapon at them inside a Starbucks in the North Bay Area city on Sunday night, according to the Vallejo Police Department.

Vallejo police said the two officers were inside the coffee shop at 199 Lincoln Rd. West around 8:50 p.m., when they saw a man open the door and point an assault style weapon with a high capacity drum magazine at them.

The "suspect appeared to be attempting to manipulate the gun as if it had malfunctioned," Vallejo police said.

A dispatch recording of the brief and tense standoff recorded someone saying, "There's a man with a rifle just trying to ambush us at Starbucks."

At that point, the two officers drew their weapons to protect themselves. The suspect took off through the parking lot, fleeing west on Magazine Street. The officers ran after the suspect and caught up with him near the intersection of Magazine and Sheridan Streets as he continued to manipulate the weapon.

Vallejo police said the suspect "presented himself as a lethal threat to the officers" who shot him three times. The suspect fell to the ground and was taken into custody.

A nearby witness says she heard more than three shots fired.

"We heard seven shots, like a clip, a large caliber clip," Susan Carter said.

The suspect was found to be carrying an additional loaded handgun and was wearing body armor. He was transported to a local hospital and was being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured. The Vallejo Police Department is investigating the incident along with the Solano County District Attorney's Office.

Vallejo residents posted videos to social media which showed heavy police presence on Magazine street, including at least 10 police cars.

Earlier Sunday, a two-year-old child was shot inside a home in Suisin City. Police are currently searching for a person of interest and that individual may have a connection to the Vallejo officer-involved shooting, according to Bay City News.

Police are expected to hold a press conference Monday morning to further address what happened.

Iraqi and Kurdish forces directed by U.S. advisers advanced toward Mosul Monday, launching an offensive to drive ISIS out of the city after its two-year occupation, NBC News reported.

Brigadier Helgord Hekmat, a spokesman for the Kurdish forces, said 4,000 Peshmerga forces had retaken a cluster of villages.

Onlookers cheered and danced as tanks rolled toward Mosul early Monday. Morale was high and troops flashed victory signs as they moved on the city.

Still, the United Nations warned that up to one million civilians may be planning to evacuate their homes in Mosul in anticipation of the military action.

"Already, the operation is so large [that] we're struggling to reach people who need help," said Lise Grande, the U.N. resident and humanitarian coordinator for Iraq.

The complex military operation will be the largest in Iraq since American troops left in 2011 and, if successful, the biggest blow yet to ISIS.
