La Costa Film Festival

Beautiful and moving films met special events at this film festival, featuring more than 45 films. Learn more about the films by attending one (or more!) of 18 Q&A sessions with the filmmaker or a panel with leading film industry experts. There are more than just films playing during the weekend, though: get your ticket for the Opening Nigh Sip and Savor Gala, featuring tasty local food, craft beer and boutique wines. The festival runs through Sunday evening.
San Diego Chargers vs. Denver Broncos
5:25 p.m., Qualcomm Stadium
The San Diego Chargers will face off against the Denver Broncos this Thursday. NBC 7 SportsWrap’s Derek Togerson will have a full recap of the game as it concludes. Tickets start at $63.
I Love a Clean San Diego Fall Social
5:30 p.m., Catamaran Resort on Mission Boulevard
Meet and mingle with some of the people who help keep San Diego’s shoreline, canyons and bays clean at this evening of food, drink and celebration. The event features an auction. Tickets start at $40.
Urban Solace Pop-Up Shop
5 p.m., Urban Solace
When you’re thinking about your dinner plans this Thursday, you may want to blend shopping with dinner. A lifestyle pop-up shop featuring local brands banding together to support a culinary charity, will set up shop inside Urban Solace from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plum + Sparrow, Gold Leaf, KB Pure Essentials, Gunn & Swain and Sweet Silhouette will be at the pop-up shop. A portion of drink sales and vendor sales will also go directly to Olivewood Gardens, the charity.
The Lion
8 p.m., The Old Globe Theater
A gripping coming-of-age story is told with six guitars in The Lion, a new, original musical playing at The Old Globe. Award-winning songwriter Benjamin Scheuer combines wit and emotional depth as he takes audience members on a trip from boyhood to manhood. Tickets start at $29. The new musical runs until Oct. 30
Friday, Oct. 14
The Haunted Trail at Balboa Park
7 p.m. to 11 p.m., 6th and Juniper at Marston Point
Take an unforgettable and eerie stroll through one of San Diego’s most recognizable sites: Balboa Park. The mile-long walk through twisted groves and gnarled oaks will have you watching your back for vampires, creepy clowns – and more. Pregnant women, infants, and children being carried will not be allowed on the trail. It is not recommended for children younger than 10 years old. The trail runs until Oct. 31.
California Ballet’s Jump Jive
7:30 p.m., Balboa Theatre
This season-opening performance brings ballet like you’ve never seen it before to the San Diego stage. Hear the Roaring 20s, big bands of the 40s and rock and roll of the 60s in one energetic performance. Tickets start at $25.
Magic Under the Stars Old School Concert
6 p.m., Qualcomm Stadium Practice Field
The original Lakeside, Kly Maxx featuring Bernadette Cooper and Club Nouveau will headline this old-school music festival at Qualcomm Friday. Tickets start at $75.
Zumba Gold
1:30 p.m., Mission Valley Library on Fenton Parkway
If you’re looking for an easy way to get fit, come out to the Mission Valley Library to join the Zumba Gold workout class, a lower impact version of their Zumba Basic class. San Diegans of any age or fitness level can partake in the class – organizers say it will be easy to follow. The class is free.
Shawn Wayans
7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., The American Comedy Co.
Actor Shawn Wayans performs stand-up at The American Comedy Co. in downtown San Diego, bringing his well-known brand of Wayans Family comedy to the stage. Tickets are $24; he will perform two shows at the same time Saturday and again at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Foreigner
8 p.m., Harrah's Resort Southern California
The iconic 1980s band, Foreigner, plays Harrah's Resort Southern California Friday night, performing those hits you remember so well, inlcuing "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Feels Like the First Time." Tickets start at $39.

Full Moon Pier Walk
Birch Aquarium at Scripps
Take a stroll under the moonlit sky this Saturday night by one of San Diego’s most prominent landmarks. The Scripps Memorial Pier, normally closed to the public, will open its gates to a select few during this walk. In addition to enjoying the full moon, you’ll also learn more about the 100-year history of the pier-based data collection at Scripps. Tickets start at $25 for members and $30 for the public. Mac N’ Cheese Festival
11 a.m., Waterfront Park
Mac n’ cheese lovers, unite! This festival, centered around the gourmet comfort food, will take place along San Diego’s bay. A $35 general admission ticket gets each attendee plenty of mac n’ cheese samples, plus 10 beer tastings. Save room for the Gourmet Mac n’ Cheese competition, too – a head-to-head showdown between several local restaurants all vying for mac n’ cheese supremacy. Winners in two categories – Best Mac n’ Cheese in San Diego and People’s Choice Mac n’ Cheese – will be selected by a panel of expert judges and attendees, respectively. Attendees must be 21 or over. Proceeds from this food fest will benefit the nonprofit organization, World Wide Network of Learning.
SEA Days at Birch Aquarium

Learn more about the cutting-edge research taking place in San Diego at the Scripps Institute with hands-on exploration and special activities at SEA Days. For those kids with school projects – SEA Days also lets kids, scouts and others meet requirements for “Interview a Scientist” or career-day projects. Programs are included with aquarium admission.
Taste of North Park
11 a.m., 30th Street
Fifty three restaurants will offer up their yummiest samples at the Taste of North Park, a perfect festival for the foodie in your life. Fan favorites like Urban Solace, Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream and West Coast Tavern, among others, will be there. When you get thirsty, take a sip of brews from 15 local breweries. If you’ve been waiting to try out a few of those popular North Park brunch or dinner spots, wait no longer – try them all out at this street fair. Tickets cost $35 per person.

Diwali Festival of Lights at Balboa Park
3 p.m., Balboa Park Visitors Center
Come celebrate India’s largest annual festival in San Diego: Diwali. Diwali celebrates the triumph of trust over darkness. Start your day at 3 p.m. and sample food from across the many regions of India. There will also be folk dance performances, places to get a henna tattoo, traditional music and more! Grand Avenue Festival
Grand Avenue, Escondido
More than 500 vendors, children’s rides and activities will line the streets of Escondido Sunday as residents come out to enjoy rides, live music and children’s games. The festival crosses seven historic blocks of the city and marks the second largest single-day fair in California. Admission is free.
Pitties in the Park
12 p.m., Ingram Plaza at NTC Liberty Station
One of the largest Pit Bull events in San Diego will take place this Sunday at NTC Liberty Station. The event, hosted by the local non-profit San Diego Pittie Parents, will have live music, an adoption alley, a cooling station, food trucks, on-site mini photography sessions, kids activities and more! And don’t forget to enter your pittie in the HOWL-O-Ween costume contest. The event is free.
October Sky
8 p.m., The Old Globe Theater
The beloved film “October Sky” has found new life as a new musical at The Old Globe. The musical, like the movie, follows high schooler and small town Virginia resident Homer Hickam as he follows his dream to build him own rockets. Tickets start at $39.
