3 Killed, at Least 12 Wounded in Shooting at Los Angeles Party

Three people were killed and 12 were wounded in a shooting at a house party in the West Adams neighborhood early Saturday morning, and police said two people were brought in for questioning and another was being sought in connection to the crime.

When officers responded to the shooting at around 12:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Rimpau Boulevard, around 50 people were running from the scene that was described as "chaotic," said Sgt. Frank Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said an argument broke out at the party, where as many as three people left the residence, came back with firearms, and started shooting.

The home was being used as a "makeshift restaurant without permits," and was filled with people doing "everything from eating to playing dominos and listening to music," when the argument happened, Preciado said.

"This is one of the most horrific crime scenes I've seen in a while," Preciado said, adding that the neighborhood is relatively quiet.

At least 12 other people were injured, police said. Some of them are in critical condition and some of them have minor injuries. The Los Angeles Fire Department treated victims at the scene.

Police are still looking for one other gunman. Descriptions of the shooters were not immediately available.

Nine states have marijuana measures on the ballot this November, and chances are good that many will pass — giving pot advocates high hopes that the federal government will eventually lift its nationwide ban, NBC News reported.

In five states — Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada — voters will decide on legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.

In four others — Arkansas, Florida, Montana and North Dakota — voters will weigh in on medical marijuana, which is already legal in nearly half the country.

Veteran Gift Bag Scam Comes to San Diego County

Solicitors for a questionable for-profit group have been spotted all over San Diego--from Encinitas to Chula vista, even in the east county.

The company is called Something for Soldiers Sales LLC and it's based out of Georgia. It's a for-profit company but many wouldn't know that unless you really look at the fine print.

Employees travel all over the country, moving from city to city after they are exposed on social media.

Wayne, who did not want to disclose his last name, lives in Lakeside and retired last year after serving 20 years in the military. He said he is always looking for ways to give back to soldiers overseas, but a recent encounter completely turned him off.

"The whole interaction was really awkward, rehearsed and staged for me," he said. He told NBC 7 that last week a worker from Something for Soldiers Sales LLC came knocking on his door and asked for a donation for gift bags to send overseas.

"He actually had pricing schedules for sponsorship levels, $24 all the way up to $200--$24 would send one care package out," he said.

NBC 7 spoke with a former employee of the company who says he's seen the group bring in up to $14,000 a day going door-to-door. He added only three to five percent of the funds raised actually go to care packages. Workers get a commission of about 50 percent on the amount they bring in, something that made sense to Wayne after his conversation.

"At the end, he was like, 'Well could you at least give me some money for my time out here speaking to you?' I was like, 'no you've got to be kidding me!'" Wayne told NBC 7.

Warnings are posted all over social media, including one from Weber County Sheriff's Office in Utah. There's even a "Something for Soldiers Sales is a Scam" Facebook page.

"I think it's very disgraceful that people or organizations would go around on the sole purpose of using our military, our veterans; anyone who has served as a platform to get money," Wayne said.

NBC 7 reached out to the company to get information on how much money is actually going towards helping soldiers overseas. They told us the company's president would have to disclose that and he would call us back. As of Friday evening, we had not heard back from him.

Trump Accuses Mexican Billionaire of Conspiring Against Him

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump suggested Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim was involved in the publication of New York Times articles about women who have come out and alleged Trump made unwanted sexual advances.

"The largest shareholder in the Times is Carlos Slim. Now Carlos Slim, as you know, comes from Mexico," he said Friday. "He's given many millions of dollars to the Clintons and their initiative. So Carlos Slim, largest donor of the paper, from Mexico."

In attacking Slim, the Republican presidential candidate is going back to his recurrent theme of condemning Mexico and Mexicans, a tactic that has played well to a base of supporters but has turned off a vast majority of Latinos —including Hispanic Republicans — and other more moderate voters.

New York Times publisher and chairman Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. said in a statement that Slim "fully respects boundaries regarding the independence of our journalism. He has never sought to influence what we report."

Slim's spokesman said Slim "doesn't know anything about his [Trump's] personal life and to be honest, he doesn't care about his personal life," and that Slim is not involved in politics in Mexico, let alone in the U.S.

Caltrans urges motorcyclists to drive slow though highway work zones. Detour signs will be posted to guide drivers to alternate routes.

Colin Kaepernick Gets Starting Nod at Quarterback for 49ers

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly announced Tuesday that Colin Kaepernick has been handed the reins to the team's offense, taking over for Blaine Gabbert at starting quarterback.

The decision comes amid the squad's four-game slump and less-than-stellar 1-4 start to the season.

"We're going to make a move at quarterback, and we're going to start Colin this week," Kelly told reporters during a morning news conference. "(We're) going to give him an opportunity to run with the ones. I believe you've got to do it at the beginning of the week just because of how reps are distributed."

Gabbert, who took over for Kaepernick midway through last season, had struggled to generate much offensive momentum and find sustained consistency with his receivers through five contests in 2016. Gabbert's 69.6 quarterback rating ranks 30th in the league, and the team is second-to-last in passing yards per game.

"We've had a couple of days to digest everything from where we are, and I think offensively we need to be better and just make a move," Kelly said. "It's not Blaine's fault. I think as a group, offensively, we need to be better in a lot of ways."

Kaepernick, who hasn't started under center since Nov. 1, 2015, against the then-St. Louis Rams, will get his first crack at resurrecting San Francisco's season this Sunday in Buffalo.

No. 7 burst onto the football scene in 2012, utilizing his dynamic run-and-pass skill set to pilot the 49ers to the Super Bowl. But the quarterback's efficiency slowly trailed off, and nagging injuries eventually landed Kaepernick on the bench.

However in August, Kaepernick recaptured national headlines after choosing to take a seat on the bench while the national anthem played before a preseason game. He has been sitting or taking a knee as a sign of civil protest over what he sees as police brutality and the unfair treatment of people of color.

Despite the protests and the recently reported contract extension talks surrounding Kaepernick, Kelly told reporters that Tuesday's announcement was not political. It was simply a  "a football decision," Kelly said.

39690243

That decision did not sit too well with Gabbert.

"It sucks," he told reporters. "I don't like it. I don't like not playing. I'm very forward about that. But, at the same time, I'm going to work the same way I've always worked the three years I've been here. Put my best foot forward. Still continue to prepare. I'm not going to slack on the film work just because I'm not playing."

The quarterback swap has generated a range of opinions and responses from social media users. Some are cheering the decision to bring their favorite QB back. Others wish he'd remain seated.

Slain SDPD Officer's Legacy Shines at Memorial Walk

In a time of deep tension and divide between communities and police across the nation, one San Diego officer’s life continues to serve as an important example of how both sides can unite.

In early August 2011, San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Officer Jeremy Henwood was critically shot while patrolling in City Heights. Dejon Marquee, a 23-year-old man with a death wish, pulled up alongside the officer’s patrol car and opened fire in the deadly, unprovoked attack.

Moments before Henwood was shot, the officer had stopped to eat at a McDonald’s on Fairmount Avenue. There, the officer noticed a boy who was hungry and short on change. In his final act of kindness before his death, Henwood bought cookies for the boy. The two shared a smile and some small talk, and Henwood told the boy to work hard. The tender moment was caught on surveillance tape and is remembered by many San Diegans.

More than five years have passed since Henwood, also a U.S. Marine who completed three tours of service in the Middle East, was killed in the line of duty. If he were alive today, he’d be just 42 years old.

On Saturday – in the heart of the community he served – friends, co-workers and even people who never met Henwood gathered to celebrate his life at the 5th Annual Jeremy Henwood Memorial Walk and Run around Chollas Lake.

“He cared about the community. He went out there every single day and wanted to make a positive difference,” SDPD Lt. Jeff Jordan told NBC 7 on Saturday, remembering his colleague.

Jordan, who responded to the scene of Henwood’s shooting that tragic day, said that at a time of heavy scrutiny for police officers around the nation – especially in inner cities – Henwood’s legacy, and that act of kindness reflective of how he lived his life, sets the bar.

“You know, when we ask our people to exhibit patience and understanding and go out to really make a difference for all those we serve – Jeremy lived that, he epitomized that," said Jordan.

The lieutenant said getting together for the memorial walk for Henwood every year is an important reminder for those in the police department.

“He kind of encourages us to go out there, take a moment, pause, engage in dialogue, because the more we know one another, the more we're committed to one another,” said Jordan. “The more we understand each other, the better we can make this community.”

Proceeds from Saturday’s event went to the Police Memorial Fund for fallen officers.

Today, a park named after Henwood stands in City Heights, dedicated to the slain officer's life of service.

A 23-year-old man shot and wounded in Linda Vista early Saturday morning has died, homicide detectives confirmed.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said a citizen called police just after 4 a.m. to report gunshots and a person that appeared to be down and hurt in the 2200 block of Comstock Street. When officers and medics arrived, they found Jordy Ramon Lopez, 23, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Lopez was conscious and breathing, and though his injury was serious, police did not think it was life-threatening.

Lopez was taken to a local hospital. About four hours later, the shooting victim took a turn for the worse. SDPD Homicide Unit Lt. Manny Del Toro said Lopez died just before 8 a.m. in the hospital.

Now, his shooting is being investigated as a homicide.

Del Toro said detectives returned to the scene of the crime Saturday afternoon to collect more evidence. At this point, no arrests have been made. No further details of the shooting were immediately released.

The investigation is ongoing. Witnesses or anyone with information can call the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers (888) 580-8477.

A woman who jumped into action to help a motorcyclist injured in a crash near San Diego State University (SDSU) told NBC 7 she was glad he was going to be alright.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. Wednesday on Montezuma Road and Collwood Boulevard in Mid-City.

SDPD officers say the rider, Alex Barbosa, slid across the ground and struck a sign post.

Andrea Davilan, a student at SDSU along with Barbosa told NBC 7 on Friday that she heard somone scream for help and ran to help.

"He was losing a lot of blood, so the person on the phone when I called 911 told me to put pressure," Davilan said. She continued to administer first-aid until paramedics arrived on scene.

According to those who know him, doctors were forced to amputate his right leg but he will be alright.

On Friday, approximately 150 people gathered at Sunset Cliffs to show support for Barbosa and his family.

"There's an account for meals to be sent to them," said Karinna Feliciano, a friend of Barbosa's. "There's a Halloween fundraiser next weekend. All proceeds to him and medical bills."

As for Davilian, she said she is glad Barbosa is alive.

Barbosa is part of a close, tight-knit Portugese community in Point Loma, according to his friends.

Police say speed did play a factor in the crash. Barbosa had been traveling at approximately 90 mph at the time.

Autopsy Report Sheds New Light on Deputy-Involved Shooting

$

A deputy-involved shooting investigation is that much closer to heading to the District Attorney’s office after the medical examiner released the autopsy report, shedding greater light on how suspect Sergio Weick died.

The autopsy report released Friday shows 33-year old Sergio Weick died with “27 separate wounds, consistent with 18 multiple penetrating and perforating gunshot wounds to the head, torso and extremities.”

The incident happened on August 11. Deputies say Weick was a known gang member and had a warrant out for his arrest when they spotted him outside of a home in Vista.

The sighting soon led to a short car chase through Vista and then a car crash.

According to the newly released medical examiner report, one deputy followed Weick on foot while another detained a passenger who was in his car.

The foot chase ended when deputies Peter Myers and Christopher Villanueva caught up to Weick standing near some bushes.

Deputies shot Weick on the left side of his body when they say he reached for his waist and “appeared to reach for a weapon." Weick collapsed and deputies handcuffed him.

Investigators say Weick had shotgun shells and knives on him. They later found a sawed-off shotgun, knives and drug paraphernalia in his car.

More than a month after the shooting, family members joined others on the streets of Vista, protesting Weick's death and calling for justice for the deputies involved.

"Sergio did not deserve to die. He was a human being just like you and I," Weick’s aunt Maria Hoyt said after the release of the autopsy report. “Sergio had a past but because of his past he did not deserve to die the way he was killed.”

Sheriff homicide detectives say they plan to hand the case over to the District Attorney’s office for review by mid-November.

Trump Insinuates Clinton Was on Drugs During Debate

$

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump insinuated that his Democratic rival was on some kind of drug during the last debate and said both candidates should be tested for substances ahead of the next one.

Trump was mocking Clinton for prepping for their third and final debate on Oct. 19 at an outdoor rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, when he made the suggestion that she might have been on some kind of performance-enhancing drug during their last face-off.

"I don't know what's going on with her, but at the beginning of her last debate she was all pumped at the debate, and at the end it was like 'uh, take me down.' She could barely reach her car," he said and proposed that they should take a drug test prior to the next debate.

"I'm willing to do it," he added.

Trump offered no evidence to support the wild, baseless claim. Nothing about Clinton's demeanor in the debate suggested she was anything but clean and sober

The event at the Toyota of Portsmouth, his first of two campaign events on Saturday, comes a day after a new poll showed the GOP candidate closing the gap Clinton's lead in the Granite state.

In Bangor, Maine — a congressional district where polls indicate he has the strongest support in the state — Trump sought to undermine the legitimacy of the U.S. presidential election, pressing unsubstantiated claims the contest is rigged against him and vowing anew to jail Hillary Clinton if he's elected.

"The election is being rigged by corrupt media pushing completely false allegations and outright lies in an effort to elect her president," he said, referring to the several women who have come forward in recent days to say that Trump had groped or sexually assaulted them. He has denied the claims, calling the women liars. NBC News has not independently confirmed the allegations.

Earlier Saturday, Trump took to Twitter to warn that "100% fabricated and made-up charges, pushed strongly by the media and the Clinton Campaign, may poison the minds of the American Voter. FIX!"

"Hillary Clinton should have been prosecuted and should be in jail," he added. "Instead she is running for president in what looks like a rigged election."

Clinton's campaign manager, Robby Mook, said in a statement that campaigns "should be hard-fought and elections hard-won, but what is fundamental about the American electoral system is that it is free, fair and open to the people."

"Participation in the system — and particularly voting — should be encouraged, not dismissed or undermined because a candidate is afraid he's going to lose," Mook said.

Later Saturday, he will head south to New Jersey to speak at the Republican Hindu Coalition, according to the group's website.

Founder Shalabh Kumar says Trump will attend the event at the Edison Expo Center to speak out against terrorism and to help raise money for terror victims in India.

Superstars Hit RiseUp AS ONE Border Concert

One of the beautiful things about living so close to another country is that sometimes you forget that it actually is another country. You forget that there is an entirely different system of government and customs just below the somewhat arbitrary line drawn in the sand -- in short, you forget there is even a border to begin with.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, Univision and Fusion collaborate with Sprint to help celebrate this sort of forgetfulness as they host the RiseUp AS ONE Concert, featuring superstars like T Bone Burnett, Andra Day, Juanes, Julieta Venegas and more. The special event will be broadcast live on national television from the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) at San Diego’s U.S.-Mexico border.

Prominent award-winning journalist Jorge Ramos will be one of the free concert’s featured hosts, and actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Wilmer Valderrama will make guest appearances as well.

“The U.S.-Mexico border provides the perfect stage for this amazing event and is a way to highlight diversity and inclusion, despite borders,” said Camila Jimenez Villa, Co-President and Chief Content Officer for Fusion Media Group. “This location and our incredible lineup of award-winning artists will celebrate, through the power of music, the connectedness of our world and the positivity that occurs when we show empathy, respect and openness to one another.”

Watch the recently released RiseUp AS ONE launch film narrated by award-winning composer, lyricist and performer Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Although the inclusive, boundary-defying event is free, tickets are required for entry and are available here. The pre-show happens from 2-3 p.m., and the main show -- which will be broadcast live in Spanish on Univision Network and in English on Fusion -- will occur from 4-7 p.m.

Special note: There will be no parking at CBX, so please use the free parking facilities at the Helmhurst Street entrance of Southwestern College. Shuttle buses will run to and from the venue between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.

‘It’s Still Very Emotional’: Teams Walk to End Drunk Driving

Mothers and families who have lost loved ones to drunk driving gathered for a 5K walk at Liberty Station Saturday in the ongoing fight to prevent deadly DUI crashes.

Tami Riley, who lives in Hawaii, was among the mothers who united for the Walk Like MADD 5K. She lost her son, Lucas Riley, just two months ago to a crash caused by a suspected drunk driver on State Route 67.

“I feel like I didn’t have an option – I had to come out [to this walk],” Tami told NBC 7, fighting back tears. “It’s still very emotional. We’ve all been devastated by this crash. It’s necessary to make it public knowledge. As a family, we want to help the problem [of drunk driving] down here.”

Lucas died in a fiery three-car crash on SR-67 on Aug. 20 when a truck driven by a DUI suspect veered across the road and struck Lucas’ Mini Cooper head-on. The impact set the Mini Cooper on fire.

Riley was a recent graduate of San Diego’s Point Loma Nazarene University – a talented art major whose work is on display at the Cedar Street Parking Garage in Little Italy. He was also engaged to be married, and his fiancée told NBC 7 he was a loving, caring man. After the crash that claimed Lucas’ life, his fiancée begged the public: “Please don’t drink and drive, please.”

As Tami walked the 5K Saturday, she carried a photo of her son and his hat in his memory, with 17 family members and friend by her side. She said she hoped Lucas’ story would help others make the right choice when drinking and thinking about getting behind the wheel.

Another team that took part in the Walk Like MADD 5K Saturday was a team from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO) and San Diego County District Attorney’s office, walking in honor of fallen SDSO Deputy Kenneth James Collier.

Collier was killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver on Feb. 28, 2010. His patrol car crashed off the side of State Route 52 while he was trying to stop a drunk driver who was traveling on the wrong side of the freeway.

“We walk in honor of Ken, forever keeping his memory alive, and we walk in honor of all of the law enforcement deputies and officer who risk their lives every day so that we are safer,” a statement from the SDSO read.

China Amps Up Space Program in Race to Challenge US

China is set to launch a Shenzhou-11 into orbit on Monday in the latest volley of an intensifying U.S.-China space rivalry.

The two-man vessel will rendezvous with a space lab launched September 15, where the crew will conduct experiments for a month — China's sixth and longest manned mission so far.

With the current U.S.-led International Space Station expected to retire in 2024, China could be the only nation left with a permanent presence in space.

Beijing is pouring money into funding the nation's ambitions — which include being the first to explore the dark side of the moon and sending a probe to Mars in 2020, the latter in direct challenge to U.S. and European space agencies.

Saudi Coalition Blames Funeral Carnage on Bad Information

A Saudi-led coalition has blamed an airstrike that killed more than 140 people at a funeral ceremony in Yemen on "erroneous information" received from a "party" affiliated with the country's embattled government.

The airstrike, which struck the capital of Sanaa Oct. 8., was one of the deadliest single attacks in the country's civil war, a U.N. official said, and was condemned by the U.N. and others.

The Joint Incidents Assessment Team, set up by the coalition, said "a party affiliated with the Yemeni Presidency of the General Chief of Staff passed on erroneous information that there was a gathering of armed Houthi leaders in a known location in Sana'a, and insisted that the location be targeted immediately as a legitimate military target."

Syrian rebels said they captured the village of Dabiq from ISIS Sunday, forcing the jihadist group from a stronghold where it had promised to fight a final, apocalyptic battle with the West.

The rebels, backed by Turkish tanks and warplanes, also took neighboring Soran, said Ahmed Osman, head of the Sultan Murad group, one of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions involved in the clashes on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

An Islamic prophesy names Dabiq as the site of a battle between Muslims and infidels that will presage doomsday, a message used extensively in Islamic State's propaganda.

A 65-year-old man who was served an eviction notice went on a shooting rampage Tuesday afternoon, wounding a neighbor and opening fire on a Florida deputy, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Larry Dennis Hoad shot and wounded a resident in his St. Petersburg triplex, then fired several gunshots at another neighbor's home, the Sheriff's Office said. The rampage was captured on surveillance video released Friday.

Deputies served Hoad with eviction papers Tuesday morning. A few hours later, the sheriff's office received reports of shots fired in the same area.

A sergeant arrived at the scene and Hoad fired two shots at the sergeant, who returned fire and hit Hoad twice. Hoad was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition.

The injured resident, 30-year-old Shawn Smith, was hospitalized in critical condition for "several" gunshot wounds, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said Hoad was on "a violent rampage looking for more victims. We are very fortunate that Hoad did not kill a deputy sheriff."

He faces three counts of attempted murder and two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Hillary Clinton is ahead of Donald Trump by double digits with just more than three weeks until Election Day, making her the clear favorite in the 2016 presidential contest, according to a new national NBC News/Wall Street poll conducted after the second presidential debate.

In a four-way horserace, the Democratic nominee holds an 11-point lead over the GOP candidate among likely voters, 48 percent to 37 percent, with Libertarian Gary Johnson at 7 percent and the Green Party’s Jill Stein at 2 percent.

In a two-way contest without Johnson and Stein, Clinton is ahead by 10 points, 51 percent to 41 percent.

"Donald Trump's chances of winning this election have faded," says Democratic pollster Fred Yang of Hart Research Associates, which conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff and his firm Public Opinion Strategies.

"This poll is showing the writing on the wall," Yang adds.
