Local Priest Facing Charges Related to Sexual Encounter

A San Diego priest is facing charges for having sex with a woman in Minnesota while religiously advising her, allegedly paying her to keep quiet about their relationship.

Jacob Andrew Bertrand, 32, a priest at the Diocese of San Diego, was charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the 3rd degree for having sex with the woman in 2010, according to a complaint filed in the County of Dakota in Minnesota.

The compaint alleges that Bertrand and the woman met while they were both studying in Rome, Italy in 2009. He allegedly engaged in sex with her while she was seeking religious advice from him after they had moved back to the U.S. The complaint states that Bertrand contacted the victim, writing her a letter and apologizing for his actions.

The complaint claims Bertrand used religion to prey on the woman’s desire to find a husband, claiming he was the man she was sent to Rome to meet. When the two flew to Minnesota later that year they stayed with the woman's family.

The complaint claims two sexual encounters took place during that trip – one while he was performing a mass for the woman in her parent's basement.

After the ceremony, the complaint claims he told the woman that what happened between them was “so mystical,” no one should know about it.

The woman claims Bertrand then sent her $1,000 to pay for school. The woman also claims that, in a conversation over the phone, the priest told her: “The Devil tempts me to think that you will tell someone and ruin my ministry.”

The complaint says the woman reported the sexual acts to church officials in 2012; her claims were forwarded to the Diocese for investigation in 2014. She filed a police report in April 2016.

The Diocese of San Diego confirmed Friday that Bertrand is facing these charges in Minnesota.

According to Aida Bustos, spokesperson for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, Bertrand filed for a leave of absence when he learned of a possibility of charges being filed. The leave of absence was granted.

The statement in part, read: "There have been no allegations lodged against Fr. Jacob here in San Diego, where he remains on a leave of absence and currently has no faculties. The diocese is not involved in his legal defense. Out of respect for all parties and for the legal process, the diocese will make no further statement at this time.”

Bertrand served at the St. Rose Lima Parish in Chula Vista from 2010 to 2013 and at the Santa Sophia Parish in Spring Valley from 2013 to 2015.

Fr. Devdas Masillamony, of Santa Sophia Church, spoke with NBC 7 Friday and said he was shocked by the allegations against Bertrand, whom Masillamony said is beloved by many.

"He’s a very caring person. He loved the people. Loved his ministry. He’s a man of prayer and a very charismatic person," said Masillamony. "What comes to mind is the Lord is my shepherd there's nothing I shall want. I think God knows the truth."

Another religious colleague of Bertrand’s told NBC 7 the priest has had a major impact on his family’s spiritual health, and the allegations against Bertrand don’t sound like the man he knows.

Bertrand’s attorney, Marc Carlos of San Diego-based law firm, Bardsley & Carlos, told NBC 7 Friday that he will not be releasing a formal statement about his client’s case, but said they will fight against these allegations, which are not true.

Bertrand faces up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.

Family Holds Funeral for Alfred Olango

Family members gathered Saturday for the funeral of Alfred Olango, the unarmed black man shot and killed last month by police officers in El Cajon.

The funeral, open to the public, began at 11 a.m. at Bayview Baptist Church on Benson Avenue in San Diego. The burial of Olango will follow; he will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery on Imperial Avenue.

After the burial, at 2 p.m., the San Diego chapter of the National Action Network (NAN) plans to hold a public “celebration of life” for Olango at the East African Community Center on Fairmount Avenue. San Diego NAN leader Rev. Shane Harris, and other civil rights activists, will be there, as well as Olango’s family members.

Olango, a 38-year-old refugee who came to the U.S. from Uganda in 1991, was shot and killed on Sept. 27 during an encounter with El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) officers Richard Gonsalves and Josh McDaniel in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 800 block of Broadway in El Cajon.

Police said Olango was acting “erratically” and refused to comply with the officers’ orders. The officers told him to get his hands out of the pockets of his pants. Instead, the ECPD said Olango pulled a 4-inch vaping device from his pocket and pointed it at Gonsalves and McDaniel in what police described as a “shooting stance.”

McDaniel deployed a Taser at Olango; Gonsalves fired multiple rounds from his gun, critically striking Olango.

The police shooting of Olango sparked days of protests on the streets of El Cajon, some of those demonstrations peaceful, some violent.

Commuter Train Derails in NY

A Long Island Rail Road train derailed in New Hyde Park Saturday night, injuring 33 people.

Of the 33 injured, seven were employees and the rest were commuters, MTA Chairman Thomas F. Prendergast said in a news conference Sunday morning. Four were seriously injured, with one person sent to have surgery yesterday and another with broken bones.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo had earlier said there were 600 people on the train and that the worst of the injuries were broken bones.

"The train is seriously off the tracks," he said at the press conference. "It's in a dangerous, precarious position."

An eastbound commuter train sideswiped a work train traveling in the same direction at about 9:10 p.m., causing the commuter train to derail and the work train to catch fire, according to Nassau County police and the MTA.

Cuomo said the main priority will be to clear the trains from the tracks and to get at least one track running as soon as possible.

"If we have to work all day and all night long, we will," he said. "We want to make sure tomorrow's commute is as easy and normal as possible."

Photos on social media showed trains tipped at an angle next to the tracks and smashed glass inside at least one car. Emergency crews were using ladders to get passengers off the derailed train.

"So the train was going normally, it was going at its normal speed, and then it started to shake, but that’s sort of normal, and then everyone started to sort of scream – so I realized something was wrong," Lindsay Javitz, who was on the derailed train, told NBC 4 New York.

"And the train was really (going) back and forth and shaking … and then I look out the window and I saw a spark or a fire type thing … and then the train abruptly stopped and the car in front of mine was tilted, as if it wasn’t fully on the track."

The LIRR said three cars derailed and were damaged. According to the MTA, the tracks are generally wide enough for trains to travel side-by-side. The agency is investigating why the collision occurred.

Service was suspended on three branches of the railroad and there was no estimate on when trains would start running again.

Limited alternate service is available to and from the Hicksville, Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson Stations. A diesel shuttle train will operate between Hicksville and Babylon. Transfers can be made at Hicksville for trains to other destinations.

Limited bus service will be provided between Jamaica and the New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Mineola, Carle Place and Westbury stations. Bus service will also replace some trains on the Oyster Bay Branch line.

For more information, commuters are advise to check the MTA website for service updates.

The LIRR is the busiest commuter rail in North America, carrying an average of 300,000 people each weekday.

The accident comes three days after a CSX derailment in the Bronx caused widespread Amtrak delays, and about 10 days after a deadly New Jersey Transit crash in Hoboken that continues to snarl service.

All Saved From Capsized Boat in SF

Every passenger is accounted for after a boat carrying 30 people capsized near San Francisco's Pier 45 Saturday afternoon, according to public safety officials.

A total of eight people, ranging from five adults to three children, were transported to local hospitals with varying degrees of injury.

A 5-year-old child, who was previously listed in serious condition, was pulled from the water and found to be unconscious, but a good Samaritan and public safety crews were able to initiate CPR before sending the child to a local hospital, Giselle Talkoff from the San Francisco Police Department said.

A second child was also listed in critical condition, Bob Postel from the San Francisco Fire Department said. The rest of the transported passengers reported to be suffering from hypothermia-related injuries after floating in the cold water.

The injured passengers are expected to survive, according to public safety officials.

[[396438261, C]]

Rescue crews and helpful bystanders spent roughly 30 minutes plucking the boaters from the water after the vessel, which has been identified as 34-foot-long boat named "Khaleesi," began to take on water. Some of those passengers onboard were reportedly trapped underneath the boat's hull, according to witnesses.

Fellow boaters jumped into action and provided any aid they could while rescue crews arrived on scene.

"There was just a ton of people in the water," witness David Griffiths said. "We just started throwing life rings."

Another good Samaritan reportedly dove in the water and freed a father and his child who were both trapped inside the vessel's cabin.

Despite the serious injuries and frantic ordeal, Postel said the capsizing could have resulted in a much worse outcome.

"This could have been really, really catastrophic," he said. "For this to have the outcome that it did, is really a lot of good fortune and good luck."

Postel credits the U.S. Coast Guard, local police and fire agencies, and good Samaritans for assisting in the rescue. Public safety officials also noted that several emergency crews were in close proximity to the boat because of the ongoing San Francisco Fleet Week festivities.

The boat did submerge completely and authorities are conducting an investigation into what caused the vessel to sink.

This is the second time in five weeks that a boat has capsized in the Bay. Back in September, a catamaran took on water and sent all 16 passengers into the water. No one was injured during that accident.

Kenyans Win Chicago Marathon

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon celebrated its 39th year Sunday with an exciting race that saw photo finishes, defending champions and new winners.

Elite runners took to the streets, some looking to defend their titles and others making their Chicago debuts.

In a sprint for the finish, Kenya's Abel Kibri beat out 2015 champion Dickson Chumba within seconds to take home his first Windy City win.

"So perfect, the course is amazing, the weather was so fine," he said after crossing the finish line.

In the women's event, defending champion Florence Kiplagat breezed to a victory, coming out ahead well into the final leg of the race and beating her 2015 time.

"Winning a major race to me is fantastic," she said. "I love Chicago."

Wheelchair finishes stunned viewers, with Marcel Hug beating out former champion Kurt Fearnley in a shocking photo finish that came down to less than one second. Initial results indicated Fearnley had won, but after an official review Hug was declared the champion.

"It was a crazy finish," Hug said.

Tatyana McFadden also became the most accomplished champion in marathon history taking home her seventh Chicago victory in the women's wheelchair race. She too was in a race to the finish line with Manuela Schar following close behind.

"It’s really good to have a win, especially being back at home," she said.

Thousands of other runners also ran through 29 Chicago neighborhoods on a grand tour of the city as they fought to complete the 26.2 miles.

Race Director Carey Pinkowski said the 2016 event saw the most starters in the race's history with 41,357 runners crossing the starting line.

"It’s different than most sports because we have great athletes up front but there’s people from all abilities, from all walks of life, they come here, they run the same course, they experience the same thing, maybe it be 3 hours or 4 hours of 5 hours, maybe their first marathon or their 50th marathon," he said. "It’s really a celebration of humanity and dedication and sacrifice and people coming together and putting their differences aside for a day."

The weather made for an ideal race day with cool temperatures, sunny skies and light winds.

The iconic event, which has generated millions for the city each year, now looks forward to its 40th anniversary set for next year.

"We’ll get back to the drawing board and start planning and get ready for the 40th celebration," Pinkowski said.

Polls: Clinton Leads Trump in Florida, Pennsylvania

Hillary Clinton is leading Donald Trump in the key battleground states of Florida and Pennsylvania, including by double digits in the Keystone State due to her strength in Philadelphia and its suburbs, according to two brand-new NBC News/Wall Street Journal polls.

In Florida, the Democratic nominee is ahead of Trump by three points among likely voters, 45 percent to 42 percent, within the poll’s margin of error. Libertarian Gary Johnson gets 5 percent, and the Green Party’s Jill Stein gets 3 percent.

In Pennsylvania, Clinton’s lead over the Republican candidate is 12 points among likely voters, 49 percent to 37 percent, with Johnson at 6 percent and Stein at 4 percent.

It would be virtually impossible for Trump to win the White House if he loses both states, especially Florida.

Both polls were conducted before Friday’s bombshell 2005 audio of Trump talking about groping and kissing women.

1-Acre Canyon Fire Burns Close to El Cajon Homes

A one-acre fire scorched brush along a canyon in El Cajon Saturday afternoon, looming close to homes in the area.

Heartland Fire & Rescue said the blaze began at 2:45 p.m. in a canyon near the 500 block of Tyrone Street. Fire officials said heavy, dry brush in the canyon quickly fueled the flames quickly.

“As we moved into our brush fire mode, it took us about 10 minutes to get folks surrounded and in the right positions to attack the fire,” El Cajon Interim Fire Chief, Greg Mcalpine, told NBC 7. “Control of the fire was about 10 minutes later after the initial attack.”

Engines from various agencies, including the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, and Santee and La Mesa fire departments, rushed to the neighborhood. Aircraft made drops on the fast-moving flames.

“For a time we did have the fire creeping up and around homes in the canyon area. We had assistance from our partners in the area including CAL FIRE, San Diego, Santee, in addition to the helicopters,” Mcalpine said.

[[C,396427301]]

One resident went door-to-door around the neighborhood to make sure everyone got out of their homes safely.

Nidhal Talia said one of her neighbors came by to warn her husband of the fire.

“The doorbell was ringing so hard and a woman was knocking on the window screaming get out, get out, there's a fire in the canyon!” Talia said. "He was home sleeping and he just heard the sirens and he was so surprised, the dogs started barking like crazy. The doorbell was ringing so hard and a woman knocking on the window."

Within 10 minutes, firefighters had a handle on the blaze and were putting out hot spots. Residents helped, too, grabbing hoses from their yards to drench the scorched earth. Small flames lingered but soon, those were also knocked out.

The canyon is surrounded by homes, so crews launched a heavy, swift response to ensure those properties weren't destroyed.

And, though the fire came close to homes, there was no damage to surrounding properties, officials said. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire sparked as San Diego County endured a hot, dry weekend. Earlier this week, Santa Ana conditions were forecasted and a fire weather watch was issued by the National Weather Service, but that advisory was later cancelled. Still, NBC 7's Whitney Southwick said Friday the county was in for very hot temperatures and dry conditions, also known to fuel October wildfires in San Diego.

This was the second brush fire reported Saturday. In the morning, another fire burned one acre of vegetation near Valley Center.

Melania Trump Condemns Husband's 'Unacceptable' Comments

Melania Trump condemned her husband's comments Saturday, joining ranking Republican party officials in denouncing crude comments about women made by Donald Trump over a decade ago, with a handful withdrawing their endorsement of the presidential candidate or calling for him to step aside as the GOP nominee.

In a statement published on the GOP presidential nominee's website, Melania Trump said: "The words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me. This does not represent the man that I know. He has the heart and mind of a leader. I hope people will accept his apology, as I have, and focus on the important issues facing our nation and the world."

Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, was "beside himself" and his wife was furious, according to a person close to the couple, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share the private discussion, the Associated Press reported.

After refusing to respond to questions from reporters Friday night, Pence released a statement Saturday saying he was "offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump" and "cannot defend them." But, he added, "I am grateful that he has expressed remorse and apologized to the American people."

It is the first time Pence has publicly condemned controversial statements made by Trump. During the vice presidential debate Tuesday, the governor repeatedly dodged challenges to defend some of Trump's most inflammatory comments about women and immigrants when pressed by Hillary Clinton's runningmate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said he was "sickened" by Trump's remarks and angrily revoked an invitation for the real estate mogul to appear at a GOP event Saturday in Wisconsin. Pence canceled a scheduled appearance at the same event amid fallout from Friday's video.

"I hope Mr. Trump treats this situation with the seriousness it deserves and works to demonstrate to the country that he has greater respect for women than this clip suggests," Ryan said.

Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus has been a champion of the billionaire businessman's campaign since Trump won the party's nomination, but he was among the first Republicans to criticize the latest revelations from Trump's comments about women in a curt response.

"No woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever."

Newly released audio from 2005 revealed Trump bragging about trying to have sex with a married woman and made a series of profane, sexually charged comments about women. The recording was published Friday by The Washington Post and NBC News.

[[338107532, C]]

Sen. John McCain, who offered grudging support for the Republican candidate, withdrew his support for Trump Saturday, saying "Cindy and I will not vote for Donald Trump."

"Donald Trump’s behavior this week, concluding with the disclosure of his demeaning comments about women and his boasts about sexual assaults, make it impossible to continue to offer even conditional support for his candidacy, McCain said in a statement. "Cindy, with her strong background in human rights and respect for women fully agrees with me in this."

Two Utah Republicans, Gov. Gary Herbert and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, also withdrew their endorsements Friday, while former Gov. Jon Huntsman called for the candidate to step aside and let Pence take his place.

Chaffetz, who is chairman of the House oversight committee, told a Utah television station he can “no longer in good conscience endorse this person for president.” He called Trump’s comments “some of the most abhorrent and offensive comments that you can possibly imagine.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell weighed in after more than five hours, calling the comments repugnant and unacceptable.

"As the father of three daughters, I strongly believe that Trump needs to apologize directly to women and girls everywhere, and take full responsibility for the utter lack of respect for women shown in his comments on that tape," McConnell said.

Rep. Mike Coffman, a Republican congressman in Colorado, also called on the candidate to step aside “for the good of the country and to give the Republicans a chance of defeating Hillary Clinton.” Coffman had previously refused to endorse Trump.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham wrote in tweet that he was "never comfortable with Donald Trump as our party nominee" and conservative Alabama congresswoman Martha Roby admitted to previously tolerating Trump's "antics" because she wanted to support the party's nominee. Now, she says Trump should "step aside and allow a responsible, respectable Republican to lead the ticket."

The highest-ranking female Republican in the House, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, released a statement declaring that "it is never appropriate to condone unwanted sexual advances or violence against women. Mr. Trump must realize that it has no place in public or private conversations today or in the past."

Ryan's spokesman and several others who criticized Trump's comments sidestepped the question of whether he should stay in the race.

Former Secretary of State and George W. Bush advisor Condoleezza Rice took to Facebook to announce that she would not support Trump, either.

"Enough!" she posted. "Donald Trump should not be President.  He should withdraw. As a Republican, I hope to support someone who has the dignity and stature to run for the highest office in the greatest democracy on earth."

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a former GOP primary opponent who has not endorsed Trump, called Trump's comments "wrong and offensive."

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, who have never been Trump fans, also took to Twitter to denounce him.

[[396364731, C]]

But Trump's Virginia campaign chairman, Corey A. Stewart told The Washington Post that women voters wouldn't be moved by Trump's comments.

“When people voted for Donald Trump, they knew he wasn’t an angel,” said Stewart, a 2017 contender for Virginia governor and chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. “They are not concerned that, at times, Donald Trump acts like a frat boy. Sometimes he does, but that’s okay.”

Trump held his ground in a video statement released early Saturday that made it clear he was staying in the race. “Anyone who knows me, knows these words don’t reflect who I am,” he said, before apologizing and claiming he has “changed.”

“See you at the debate on Sunday,” he said.

NBC's Danielle Abreu contributed to this report.

Local Republican Leaders Discuss Trump’s Lewd Comments

$

As Republican leaders across the U.S. decry Donald Trump following the release of vulgar comments he made about women on a bus with Access Hollywood's Billy Bush 10 years ago, congressmen in San Diego are also reacting to the crude chatter caught on tape.

On Friday, a decade-old recording of Trump resurfaced in which he bragged about being able to do anything he wants to women, including grabbing a woman’s genital area and wooing a married woman.

Republicans across the country have denounced Trump for the offensive comments.

In San Diego, Republican Congressman Darrell Issa released this statement about Trump Friday evening via Twitter: “This type of behavior has no place in American politics, especially not from those seeking to lead our great nation.”

Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter’s chief of staff, Joe Kasper, released this statement on Hunter’s behalf:

“In many ways, I'm sure Donald Trump is learning he's not the same person he was 20 or even ten years ago. What sounds like bar room talk to some is very insulting to others – and he should explain how that's reflective of his character today, something many folks recognize but need to feel is sincere. And not to excuse but rather put in context, Trump was building a brand and a business empire without an expectation he'd ever run for office, much less President. In that regard there was no real consequence but that's definitely not the case when running for President.”

Democratic Congressman Scott Peters spoke with NBC 7 Saturday afternoon, calling Trump’s comments “reprehensible.”

“I’m not surprised, given what he said about Mexicans, about women in the past, about Muslims,” said Peters. "Scapegoating and name-calling comes naturally to him.”

Peters said Trump trying to direct attention at Bill Clinton's behavior in the past on the heels of the release of the recording appears to be an attempt to direct the attention of voters aways from his own behavior.

“Bill Clinton is not on the ballot; Donald Trump is on the ballot," Peters added.

NBC 7 has also reached out to Democratic Congressman Juan Vargas and Democratic Congresswoman Susan Davis. Vargas could not be reached, while Davis said she would not be making a comment on this matter at this time.

Meanwhile, local voters also had strong reactions to the comments made by Trump on that 2005 recording.

Carla Picket, who is voting for Hillary Clinton, told NBC 7 she’s not voting for Trump because he’s, in her words, “a disaster.”

“I wasn’t terribly surprised,” said Picket. “It made me very angry but everything he does makes me angry. I don’t even know how Americans are even considering him.”

Fred Grammar, who plans to vote for Trump, called the release of the tape a “political ploy to dig up dirt” on the Republican presidential candidate.

“People change. It was 10 years ago; I’m definitely not the same person I was 10 years ago,” said Grammar. “Yeah, okay – Trump’s been married three times, so what? I think he’s just the one who is most qualified to get the job done. Period.”

Sharon Wilson, an undecided voter, told NBC 7 that she feels that the presidential election has been tainted by mudslinging by both parties.

“Instead of focusing on issues, they’re focusing on each other’s personalities which is a shame. The issues are primarily important,” Wilson said. “I think they’re both out of their mind half the time. It’s an unfortunate election year. We don’t have good candidates right now, I don’t believe.”

Trump’s runningmate, Mike Pence, said he was “offended” by the comments and released a statement saying, in part: “I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them.” Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, also issued a statement, calling her husband’s comments about women “unacceptable and offensive.”

Trump released an apology in which he pledged "to be a better man" but despite the intensifying backlash, insisted he would “never” abandon his bid for the White House, even if Republican leaders across the nation call on his to quit the race.

A suspect accused of shooting three Palm Springs police officers, two fatally, was taken into custody early Sunday following a lengthy standoff with law enforcement.

The shooting occurred on Cypress Road just after noon on Saturday, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

A woman called police to report that her adult son was causing a disturbance. When officers arrived, the man threatened that he would shoot through the door, an officer with the Palm Springs Police Department said

The suspect, later identified as 26-year-old John Felix, opened fire on the three officers.

All three were taken to a hospital, where two of the officers — identified as Jose Gilbert Vega and Lesley Zerebny — died.

The third officer was wounded and remained hospitalized.

"I am awake in a nightmare right now," Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said at a news conference.

Law enforcement officials launched a manhunt for the shooter Saturday night and evacuated local residents on several blocks. Several law enforcement agencies and SWAT teams were assisting with the investigation

Police urged people who live in the area to remain inside and lock their doors.

Felix surrendered to police and was taken into custody early Sunday morning, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said.

He will be booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on two counts of murder of a police officer, the Palm Springs police department said in a statement.

Vega was a 35-year veteran of the police department. The 63-year-old was due to retire in December. He was not scheduled to work Saturday but chose to work overtime, according to Reyes.

Vega is survived by his wife and eight children.

Zerebny, 27, was with the department for a year and a half, Reyes said. She had just returned to work after giving birth to a  baby four months ago.

Zerebny is survived by her husband and child.

Police Shot in Southern California

The suspected shooter accused of killing two Palm Springs officers and injuring another was identified early Sunday, the Riverside County Sheriff said.

John Felix, 26, of Palm Springs, was taken into custody after a 12-hour standoff and was to be booked of two counts of murder on a peace officer. The Riverside County District Attorney's office was expected to file murder charges.

Riverside County District Attorney Michael Hestrin said Felix may be eligible for the death penalty.

In an emotional news conference, Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes broke down in tears describing the dedication of the slain officers, Jose Gilbert Vega and Lesley Zerebny.

"To see her laying down with her eyes open and witness her husband, in full Riverside County Sheriff’s uniform because he’s a deputy sheriff, kiss her on the forehead for the last time... it’s tough," Reyes said, describing the moment Zerebny had been shot.

The shooting occurred just after noon at 2700 Cypress Road, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

The officers had responded to a report of a family disturbance call before the shooting occurred, an officer with the Palm Springs Police Department said.

A woman reported that her adult son was causing a disturbance. When officers arrived, the man threatened that he would shoot through the door, police said.

As the gunfight ensued, three officers were shot, authorities said. Officers began using life-saving methods to help the injured officers.

All three were taken to a hospital where Vega and Zerebny died.

The third officer was recovering.

"I am awake in a nightmare right now," Reyes said at an earlier news conference.

The shooter refused to surrender and barricaded himself in his home.

As a precaution, neighbors were evacuated as others were told to stay inside and lock their doors.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department said on Twitter early Sunday morning that the suspect had been taken into custody.

SWAT teams used chemical agents to flush Felix out of the house, and when he fled through a back door, he was detained.

He was wearing "soft body armor," and had high capacity magazines on him, but was not armed when being taken into custody.

Felix was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Vega was a 35-year veteran of the police department. The 63-year-old was due to retire in December. He was not scheduled to work Saturday and chose to work overtime at the time of the shooting, according to Reyes.

Vega is survived by his wife and eight children.

Zerebny, 27, was with the department for a year and a half, Reyes said. She had just returned to work after giving birth. She was a new mom to a 4-month-old baby.

Zerebny is survived by her husband, a sheriff's deputy, and baby daughter.

A candlelight vigil is set for Sunday evening at 5 p.m. in front of the Palm Springs Police Department located at 200 S Civic Dr.

San Diego County Parks and Recreation Department earned reaccreditation last week from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), one of only 25 counties in the nation to receive the commendation.

This is the second time the department has received the commendation, and it is the first in California to be reaccredited.

CAPRA, the only national accreditation for parks and recreation operators in the country, measures agencies for excellence and service using 152 markers of quality.

CAPRA noted the department’s planning process, collaboration with other agencies and diversity of amenities and offerings.

“Earning national accreditation means you have been identified as running a best-in-class operation,” said Chairman Ron Roberts, San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “Clearly, from the top down, our County Parks and Recreation department staff members have shown they understand what it takes to go above and beyond for our residents.”

County Parks and Recreation Director Brian Albright said the reaccreditation recognizes the department’s commitment to building and maintaining an excellent park system.

“This reaccreditation validates ongoing efforts to enhance recreational opportunities in San Diego, while balancing the specific needs of the wildlife and ecosystems that are unique to our region,” Albright said. “We appreciate the endorsement and invite residents to enjoy all that parks have to offer.”

Accreditation was announced Wednesday at the National Recreation and Park Association Congress and Expo in St. Louis, Missouri.

The County Department of Parks and Recreation oversees more than 120 parks, preserves, historic sites, sports complexes and community centers across 50,000 acres of land. Some 350 miles of trails take visitors through multiple climates and habitats, with hundreds of planned outdoor activities for all ages, interests and abilities.

Reaccreditation is a two-year process that required the staff compile data and documents to demonstrate best practices in all aspects of the department, which was evaluated by a committee of industry professionals earlier this year.

Agencies must be reaccredited every five years.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton went head to head in their second presidential debate in St. Louis Sunday night.

The rematch kicked off without a handshake, followed by questions regarding etiquette. Trump's recorded comments from 2005 about his pursuit of a married woman and Clinton's emails took center stage during the first 15 minutes of the town hall.

#Nohandshake began trending on Twitter, as did #Obamacare. Trump said he'd completely repeal Obamacare and Clinton said the Affordable Care Act was not perfect.

In a twist, the two candidates walked toward each other and shook hands at the end of the debate.

Here's the top tweets reacting to tonight's debate.

Then Trump is implored by one of the moderators, Martha Raddatz, to move on, but he pushes back saying, “So she’s allowed to do that but I’m not allowed to respond?"
