The D-backs Clinch Fourth Place with a Padres Sweep

The curtains have closed on another Padres season which ended very similar to how it started back in July, with a Padres sweep.

The Diamond backs brought out the broom in the bottom of the ninth in the battle for the basement. The Diamondbacks clinch fourth place with the 3-2 win.

The D-backs have now beat the Padres in the last 4 match ups. However the Padres still hold the winning record on the season, taking six of their ten matchups.

It was a low scoring game for both teams that came down to the wire. It was the bottom of the ninth with two outs and Brad Hand on the mound. Hand who has proved to be the Padres best pitcher this season was no match for Phil Gosselin who would finish the game with a walk off RBI single. This was Gosselin’s 13th RBI in 122 games this would help the Diamondbacks get the final run of the evening.

Padres September call up Hunter Renfro would gain his 14th RBI in the top of the fourth with a double to left field, scoring Wil Myers and finishing the Season with 14 RBIs in just 11 games. Renfro could be the game changer for the padres come next season.

Renfro wasn’t the only Padre who gained an RBI in this game; Luis Sardines continued his high hitting streak with a ground ball past third to score Austin Hedges. Sardines would finish his 2016 season with 18 RBI’s in 66 games.

Though the Padres take last place in the NL West it is not all bad news, this will put them in better positioning for the 2017 draft pick.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning pregnant women to stay away from 11 Southeast Asian countries where Zika is spreading, NBC News reported.

Pregnant women should not travel to any area with a Zika travel notice and should consider postponing non-essential travel to the 11 countries in Southeast Asia listed in the newly issued considerations," the CDC advised on Thursday.

Robin Williams' Widow Pens Essay

Robin Williams’ widow opened up about the late actor’s life in a moving new essay titled "The Terrorist Inside My Husband’s Brain."

In the essay, published in the medical journal Neurology, Susan Schneider describes Williams as drowning in his symptoms of Lewy body dementia and feeling like she was drowning along with him. Lewy body dementia is often misdiagnosed and can come with impaired thinking, memory loss, insomnia, and paranoia.

Williams killed himself in August 2014.

Schneider writes, "Robin is and will always be a larger-than-life spirit who was inside the body of a normal man with a human brain. He just happened to be that 1 in 6 who is affected by brain disease."

Schneider, who serves on the board for the American Brain Foundation, hopes her essay leads to more understanding for everyone affected.

'Trump Wall' Halloween Display

A home in West Hartford, Connecticut is getting a lot of attention for a Halloween display with a strong political statement.

Resident Matt Warshauer and his family are known for their elaborate Halloween displays. This year Warshauer, who teaches American political history at Central Connecticut State University, created what he calls the “Trump Wall,” based on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's proposal to build a border wall along the U.S. and Mexican border if he gets elected.

“It’s something that disturbs me because I believe that we’re a nation that gets other nations to tear down walls, not put them up,” said Warshauer, who lives on North Main Street.

He said every Halloween he tries to design a display that makes people think about current political issues.

“Halloween is that one time of year where you can push the envelope a little bit. I try to make it Halloweeny, but I also make it very political,” said Warshauer, who lives on North Main Street.

The detailed display features a wall complete with a Trump tower, a Trump deportation center and zombies and skeletons. Warshauer said he included several pieces of original artwork from Hall High School students in the display.

Warshauer also pokes fun at the Democrats, with a depiction of Hillary Clinton riding a donkey as part of the display.

Warshauer said he knows not everyone will agree with his point of view, but he makes his political statement to encourage conversation and debate.

“Living in a democracy is the ability to put our views out there and be able to sort of make our positions known and even debate them if necessary, and that’s what we should be doing,” he said.

4 Students From Same HS Found Dead

The school year in one suburban New York community has started with funerals, fear and frustration.

Four teenagers from Brentwood High School on Long Island have been found dead within the past month, all suspected victims of gang violence.

On Sept. 13, the day before her 16th birthday, Nisa Mickens' brutally beaten body was found on a tree-lined street in Brentwood. A day later, the beaten body of her lifelong friend, 16-year-old Kayla Cuevas, was discovered in the wooded backyard of a nearby home. The teenagers had been inseparable and shared an interest in basketball.

Days later, police discovered the skeletal remains of 19-year-old Oscar Acosta and 15-year-old Miguel Garcia-Moran in a remote industrial area of the town. Acosta had been missing since May, and Garcia-Moran vanished in February.

Students are saying they're afraid to walk alone in their community and school administrators are warning students not to wear clothing that could risk offending vicious street thugs.

Alexis Portillo, 16, was devastated when he learned of the killings: "Like, who else is going to be next, you know?"

One Brentwood teen who wouldn't give his name, said he feared gang retaliation and that many students are nervous.

"They don't play around. If they don't like you and if you do something to them, they will come after you," he said. "I'm not going to walk anywhere. We're definitely more cautious about that. I don't go out at night anymore."

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that said the Salvadoran gang MS-13 is suspected, although police have not made arrests. The official was not authorized to talk publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Like many suburban areas, Long Island has become a home to street gangs. At least 30 people have been killed by MS-13 gang members on Long Island since 2010.

"There's definitely been an uptick, but we always have bad crews operating here," the official said.

In one particularly heinous killing, four MS-13 gangsters were convicted in the 2010 killing of a Long Island woman and her toddler son. Prosecutors say the mother had allegedly shown disrespect to the gang. Her child was murdered simply because he was with her.

In Brentwood, police are releasing few details about their investigation into students' deaths.

Abraham Chaparro, Garcia-Moran's stepfather, said he was last seen heading off to meet some friends. He said his stepson, who emigrated from Ecuador two years ago, liked cars, soccer and girls.

"He had a girlfriend in every corner. He was good-looking," Chaparro said. "I don't understand how this happened. It's a mystery."

A large photo of the boy smiling in a white suit and black bow tie sat at the front of a funeral home chapel as mourners paid respects this past week.

Maria Arias spent days going door to door looking for her son, Oscar, after he disappeared while reportedly going to a nearby park to play soccer.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini says detectives are optimistic about arrests. A "violent known gang member" was in federal custody, he said, but the arrest papers and charges are under seal and no one is saying if that suspect is tied to any of the killings.

Last week, investigators searched a shuttered state psychiatric hospital for additional victims but came up empty.

All this leaves a community on edge.

Brentwood school officials said a freshman walking to a bus stop with a light blue T-shirt in his hand was stopped last week by a group in a car. The driver demanded the shirt, which was set on fire; the student was told not to wear that color again. Curtis Sliwa, founder of the New York City-based Guardian Angels, a neighborhood patrol group that has now started patrols in Brentwood, said blue is an MS-13 color.

School officials advised in a letter to parents that "children not wear clothing that could be considered to be gang-related."

Monique Darrisaw-Akil, assistant superintendent for secondary education, conceded that "students sometimes get involved in things that are not in their best interest or in the best interest of the school community, so we try to be as proactive, and provide interventions."

All northbound and southbound Interstate 15 lanes have been reopened near Escondido after police activity in the area, according to Caltrans.

All I-15 lanes at Via Rancho Parkway in Escondido were closed at approximately 12 p.m. Sunday, Caltrans reported. The express lanes at southbound I-15 at Via Rancho Parkway were closed shortly after.

An hour after the closure, Caltrans reopened the lanes. However, heavy backup in the area remains. Northbound traffic stalled from Escondido down to Rancho Bernardo during the closure.

One NBC 7 viewer said some had gotten out of their cars and began to play as they waited for traffic to start moving again.

SCOTUS: No Rehearing for Obama Immigration Policy

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday denied a request to rehear a case concerning its executive actions on President Obama's immigration policy, NBC News reported.

Unable to reach a decision in June, the justices tied 4-4, leaving a lower court order intact that blocked the immigration plan from going into effect.

Obama's immigration programs would shield more than four million people from deportation. Texas and 25 other states sued after it was announced in 2014, claiming the president had no power to order the changes. But the court's tie prevented a decision on the merits of that claim.

NY AG Issues Cease and Desist to Trump Foundation

New York's top prosecutor is ordering the Donald J. Trump Foundation to stop soliciting funds because it doesn't have the proper certification.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman issued a cease and desist order to the charitable foundation created by Donald Trump in 1988.

The order, released Monday afternoon, claims that the foundation wasn't registered with the state charities bureau in 2016 but has engaged in fundraising activities during that time.

The order states that the Trump Foundation has 15 days to register with the charities bureau or "shall be deemed to be continuing fraud upon the people of the state of New York."

Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for Trump's presidential campaign, said "we remain very concerned about the political motives behind AG Schneiderman's investigation."

"The Trump Foundation nevertheless intends to cooperate fully with the investigation," she said.

The order comes after The Washington Post reported that Trump's foundation used donations to pay legal settlements, political contributions and portraits of the billionaire businessman.

The Post has also reported that the foundation solicited donations from the public without the required certification under New York state law.

17 Arrested After Alfred Olango Protests

Seventeen people were arrested following two large protests and rallies across San Diego in response to the controversial deadly shooting of an unarmed black man in El Cajon.

The arrests happened after a Saturday afternoon protest that started in Balboa Park; crowds marched to Downtown before heading back to Broadway.

Police first stopped a car leaving the protest area near the 800 block of Broadway for a traffic infraction, according to El Cajon Police Lt. Rob Ransweiler.

The driver, who was under 21, was arrested for driving under the influence. The two passengers were also arrested and charged with being drunk in public.

After that arrest, police responded to a fight between a small group of protesters near the 800 block of Broadway. It was reported someone left to get a gun, Ransweiler said.

Officers declared an unlawful assembly and ordered the group to disperse. Most of the protesters left, but a small number stayed. Officers asked the remaining protesters to leave and they promised to leave, Ransweiler said. However, when they did not leave, officers again reminded them of the unlawful assembly and ordered them to leave. The remaining individuals did not make an attempt to leave, Ransweiler said.

Fourteen adults were arrested, 12 of which were charged with failing to depart an unlawful assembly, one for an arrest warrant and one for public intoxication.

The protests came one day after police released video of the police shooting of Alfred Olango, 38.

"No justice, no peace!" the demonstrators chanted. One woman held a sign that read: "Comply or not, we're shot."

The large crowd prompted transportation officials to close the State Route 163 connector to Interstate 5 at Park Boulevard.

Watch the Facebook live of the march below or here.

The shooting:

Olango was shot and killed by officers with the El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) on Tuesday in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 800 block of Broadway.

Police said Olango refused to comply with the officers’ orders to get his hands out of the pockets of his pants. Police said he pulled a 4-inch-long vaping device from his pocket and pointed it at the officers in a “shooting stance.” At that point, ECPD Officer Josh McDaniel deployed a Taser on Olango; Officer Richard Gonsalves fired several shots at Olango, critically striking him.

The encounter was captured on cellphone video by a witness who was working at a nearby taco shop, as well as on a surveillance camera from that business.

Following the shooting, the ECPD released a single still photograph pulled from that video of Olango in that “shooting stance.” Civil rights leaders urged the police department and San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis to release the full video.

ECPD Chief Jeff Davis said the decision to release the video Friday stemmed from concern for public safety.

However, Harris argued that the video was not shown to Olango’s family before it was publicly released, which was upsetting to the family. He argued that Davis, Dumanis and El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells released the video to only quell protests.

“They want peace. But what they don’t understand is that if there is no justice, there is no peace,” said Harris at his own news conference following the release of the video.

The shooting of Olango is the latest case in a series of police shootings of unarmed black men across America. The case has sparked days of protests in El Cajon. Some demonstrations have been peaceful, others have been heated, leading to arrests.

Pastor Gives Healing Sermon on Olango Shooting

“When I watched that video, I saw a mother’s heart get broken" Pastor Miles McPherson said in a powerful sermon on the shooting death of Alfred Olango at Rock Church in Point Loma on Sunday.

McPherson prayed for Olango’s family, Officer Richard Gonsalves and for the protesters.

“Love those who are on the other side,” McPherson said during his sermon.

McPherson has an interesting perspective. His father was a New York police officer for more than 30 years, and his son works in law enforcement.

“I see both sides,” he said. “Police officers and citizens are human.”

McPherson said he understands there are many perspectives on the shooting and everyone is entitled to their opinion, and he hopes they express their opinion, “but please follow it with the heart of God.”

Churchgoer Janet Wessels agreed.

“It’s very important that we not get caught in our own paradigm about where we grew up or what our experience has been, but broaden that to be what God’s perspective is.

The pastor said he sees why protesters are upset, but he sees a light at the end of the darkness.

“Ultimately I would hope that we would have a dialogue. God will change our heart,” he said.

Yvonne Mangum, who attended McPherson’s sermon, also agreed.

“There’s so much hurt and pain. We need healing in the world right now,” Mangum told NBC 7.

“Pastors in this city are becoming united and I think good will come out of this,” churchgoer Dave Wessels said. “I believe that.”

Car Drives Through Living Room While Family Watches TV

A family watching the Chargers game at their El Cajon home had a scare Sunday when someone drove a car through their living room wall causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

“I was on my way home when my son called me,” renter Rodney Hurn told NBC 7. He said while he wasn’t there when the car drove through the wall, both his wife and son were.

According to Hurn, when the car approached a stop sign across the street the driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake. The crash may have been caused by a medical emergency.

Both the driver and Hurn’s wife, who was sitting on the couch when the car came through the wall, were taken to the hospital.

“She was sitting right on the other side when it happened,” Hurn said of his wife. “Her knees hurt, her ankles hurt and her back hurts.”

The homeowner is also assessing the damage, trying to fix the structure so the family can stay in the home while repairs are being made.

“The building inspector was already here and he says if we shore up this corner, we'll be able to stay here,” Hurn said. The Hurn’s new car was also damaged when the garage door fell on it.

Amazingly, this isn't the first time someone has crashed into the family's home.

"It happened about a year ago. Had a guy hit-and-run somebody up the street and he was trying to get away from the scene, drove through our neighbors yard, flew off the wall and hit the corner of our porch."

Even with all the damage Hurn said he’s just glad no one was seriously injured.

"[I'm going to] just clean it up," Hurn said with a slight smile.

Death of Lyft Driver Highlights Dangers of the Job

After a Lyft driver was killed by a hit-and-run driver on the side of Highway 94 Friday night while helping a sick passenger, other Lyft drivers say it’s a dangerous situation that’s all too familiar to them.

Like many other late night drivers, Reyes was likely dealing with a passenger who had too much to drink.

“I’ve literally pushed their head out the window,” Lyft driver Angelika Jaehn said of her own experiences with drunk passengers. “I did pull over just last week, over on the 8. I will never do that again.”

Jaehn told NBC 7 that seven of her relatives are Lyft drivers, including her pregnant daughter. Several of them are now considering changing their driving habits because of this weekend’s crash.

“Some of them are not going to work as many hours,” she said.

People who are unfamiliar with ride hailing services like Lyft might feel uncomfortable jumping into a car with a complete stranger, but often it’s the driver who is most at risk.

Lyft driver John said he tries to avoid picking up intoxicated riders altogether.

“It is a risk. Just cause I don't know who they are and don't know what they're capable of and don't know what type of day they've had,” he said.

John, who has been driving with Lyft for a year, said he also tries to not pick up passengers too late.

“If they get sick, you know what let them get sick in the car,” Jaehn said. “You can clean it, you can't bring back life.”
