Four people were killed and dozens more injured when a bus carrying a college football team crashed into a highway median in North Carolina Saturday afternoon, NBC News reported.

Forty-six people were on the bus traveling from Clinton College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to the University of God's Chosen in Fayetteville, North Carolina, when it veered into a highway median near Hamlet, said North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Jeff Gordon.

The crash is under investigation, but Gordon said a tire on the bus likely blew causing it to swerve. He said some of the victims were ejected from the bus.

29 Hurt in ‘Intentional’ NYC Blast; No Terror Link, Mayor Says

Some 29 people were injured in an explosion in Chelsea Saturday night, and authorities removed what appeared to be a secondary device a few blocks away.

"All hands are on deck; injuries are significant," Mayor Bill de Blasio told a news conference. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, though.

"There is no evidence at this point of a terror connection," he said, though he added it was "an intentional act."

Law enforcement sources say police are in possession of a video that shows a man putting an object in a dumpster, followed by an explosion some time later.

President Obama was briefed on the explosion and receiving regular updates.

Crews responded to the scene at 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Police Commissioner Jimmy O'Neill said the explosion took place out on the street, though de Blasio declined to answer whether the cause was a bomb in a dumpster, as some sources suggested.

The NYPD also removed a possible secondary device on 27th St. Four sources said the device was a pressure cooker and that it had what appeared to be wires coming from it, a cell phone and black tape.

After asking people to stay away from their windows in the area of that device, the NYPD tweeted that it had been safely removed just before 2:30 a.m.

Photos posted to social media showed an extensive emergency presence at the scene, with the area between Sixth and Seventh avenues cordoned off. Sixth Avenue was closed from 14th to 34th Street and NYC Transit reported extensive disruptions to the 1, 2, E and F subway lines.

Street closures continued Sunday. Crosstown traffic was closed in both directions from West 14th Street to West 32nd Street between 5th and 8th Avenues. The closures are in effect until further notice, the mayor's office tweeted.

At least one Twitter user tweeted that her "whole high-rise building shook" from a apparent blast. Another image showed a Dumpster or trash bin blown apart, with bits of debris scattered on the sidewalk. People at least seven blocks away reported hearing and feeling a loud boom.

Earlier Saturday, one of three bundled pipe bombs placed in a trash can along a 5k race route to be run by Marines detonated in Seaside Park, New Jersey. The race had been running late, but authorities said they believed the device had been timed to explode as runners went by the trash bin.

No one was hurt, and de Blasio said there was no evidence of a connection between the two blasts.

The NYPD and other city officials are expected to give updates about the investigation Sunday at a 12 p.m. press conference at One Police Plaza.

A woman was taken to the hospital with trauma to her upper body in Warner Springs Friday night, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO).

The victim, who is approximately 51 years old, was found lying inside a home in the 1000 block of Camino San Ignacio on the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation around 11:46 p.m.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Ranchita Office were responding to reports of a shooting, and have since detained an approximately 57-year-old-woman at the scene as a person of interest.

Based on the circumstances and the victim’s ‘grave’ condition, the Sheriff’s Homicide Detail has taken responsibility of the investigation.

5-Year-Old in Fatal Crash that Killed Sister Out of Hospital

A 5-year-old girl who suffered a concussion in a deadly DUI crash that killed her grandmother and 2-year-old sister last week has been released from the hospital, a Rady Children’s Hospital official confirmed Saturday.

The girl was released and is now at home with her family, the hospital said.

“The Magat family would like to thank the community for all of the support they have received following that deadly crash,” Carlos Delgado, Media Relations for Rady Children’s Hospital said in a statement.

Lina Nebrida, 64, and Keira Magat, 2, died when a suspected drunk driver hit their vehicle from behind the morning of September 10 on Interstate 15 near Scripps Poway Parkway and Mercy Road.

Their vehicle stalled in the middle of I-15 while the driver that struck their vehicle fled the scene, according to California Highway Patrol officers.

A few minutes later, another vehicle slammed into the family's car.

The 5-year-old was in ICU before being moved to a private room. Her mother, who was also injured in the crash, was at her daughter’s side while she recovered, according to a family spokesperson.

The suspect, Grant Thoren, 31, was arrested and booked on multiple charges, including first degree murder. He was arrested at a home in San Marcos after being turned in by a tow truck driver, who had towed his car from a gas station near the crash site.

The San Diego District Attorney says the case is "all under review."

Officials did not file charges against Thoren at his scheduled arraignment Wednesday, which was cancelled.

A spokeswoman with the DA says the office plans to file charges, but decisions on what those charges may be have not been made.

Chargers Bounce Back In Big Way

This time there would be no letdown.

Much like they did a week prior in Kansas City, the Chargers got out to a big lead in their home opener against the Jaguars. But instead of allowing Jacksonville back in it San Diego put the hammer down and rolled to a 38-14 win, improving to 1-1 on the season.

Sure, the Jags are nowhere near as good as the Chiefs are but it was nice to see Chargers Head Coach Mike McCoy not go in to conservative mode and let his team keep doing what was so obviously working for a while.

Much like they did against the Chiefs, the Chargers scored a touchdown on their first possession and they did it by setting the tone for the rest of the day. San Diego went 75 yards in eight plays, only two of them passes, a drive that ended with Melvin Gordon scoring from the three yard line to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead.

Much like they did against the Chiefs, the Bolts defense followed suit with an inspired early effort. After trading punts cornerback Casey Hayward made a juggling interception of a Blake Bortles pass to set SD up inside Jags territory. Hayward intercepted two passes on the day.

Rivers went to work, hitting on all four of his passes, the last one a 7-yard TD to Travis Benjamin. The first Chargers score of Benjamin's career out the Bolts ahead 14-0.

The Jaguars missed a long field goal and once again the Chargers offense out together a score drive, this time with Rivers hitting Antonio Gates for three yards, a touchdown, and a 21-0 lead. But that's the margin the Chargers had in the second half in Missouri so fans were still feeling trepidation. But much like they did NOT do against the Chiefs, the Chargers kept on attacking.

Most of the fan base's hesitance dissipated in the 3rd quarter. Rivers found wide receiver Tyrell Williams and the kid from Western Oregon ran 44 yards, breaking a couple of tackles inside the 10, on his way to another score. The 28-0 lead seemed like it would be enough but just to be sure they tacked on another.

Near the end of the 3rd quarter Rivers lofted a 45-yard scoring strike to Benjamin, the kind of deep pass we haven't seen from the Chargers in a while, to make it a 35-0 game.

The Chargers defense forced three turnovers and did not allow a score until the 4th quarter when they were just trying to get the game over with. The only negative for the Bolts is the loss of Danny Woodhead, who had to be helped off the field after suffering a knee injury. The extent of the injury is not yet known.

The Chargers finished 38-14.

San Diego takes its 1-1 record back on the road next week when they face the 0-2 Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Obama: Low Black Voter Turnout Would Be 'Insult to My Legacy'

President Barack Obama made a plea to his Democratic base Saturday, telling a predominately black audience of Capitol Hill lawmakers and guests that African-Americans must vote en masse in November's presidential election to help his legacy, NBC News reported.

"There's no such thing as a vote that doesn't matter. It all matters," Obama told the crowd at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Phoenix Awards dinner.

"I will consider it a personal insult, an insult to my legacy, if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election," the president said.

While Obama touted advances in the economy, healthcare and criminal justice reform under his administration he noted that "none of it's been quick, none of it's been easy. None of it has come without a fight. And so much of our work remains unfinished."

Authorities continued to hunt for clues Sunday in the growing investigation into the explosion in Manhattan Saturday night that injured 29 people.

Investigators are analyzing possible similarities between two devices seized in New York and one that detonated earlier Saturday in New Jersey, including the fact that all three devices apparently contained old-style mobile flip phones, according to officials familiar with the probe.

The explosion in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, was reported at around 8:30 p.m. Twenty-nine people were hospitalized with injuries, but they had all been released by Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Less than three hours after the New York blast, an object police described as a "possible secondary device" was found just a few blocks away from the original explosion on 27th Street while officers were combing the area.

Fans Pack Stadium for Chargers Home Opener

Anxious fans packed into Qualcomm Stadium for the Chargers home opener Sunday, and with a lot at stake this season, more than ever the team has something to prove.

“It might be the last season,” fan Paulette Sauln told NBC 7.

"It is a ‘make or break it’ year,” fan Michele Stress said. “The Chargers have to be on their game and they have to do everything they can to bring people to the stadium."

But to build the stadium the Chargers want, the team’s downtown stadium initiative will have to pass on the November ballot.

"All those people on the fence, if the Chargers don't win, they're not going to vote for the new stadium,” Sauln said.

Though fans disagree whether the stadium should be in Mission Valley or downtown they all agree they don’t want the team to go to LA.

“I’m not, not ever going to a football game in LA. Not doing it. No,” Sauln said emphatically.

But Sauln and the others hope the more points the Chargers can score on the field will mean more points scored with fans.

“They better win because we need to boost up voting morale so we can get more Chargers fans to vote,” fan Martell Duplesis said. “We need all the support we can get go Chargers.”

Fan Contends Law Enforcement 'Bullied' Concertgoers at KAABOO

Just as hip-hop artist Ludacris was set to take the stage Saturday night disorder overtook KAABOO.

“It turned into a big chaotic riot of people just throwing stuff, fights breaking out, cops tackling people with pepper spray, tasers, it was the whole nine yards for sure,” fan David Lopez said.

Lopez said San Diego Sheriff's deputies ordered people to leave.

That’s one reason why people weren't too happy when KAABOO later tweeted that Encore was at capacity, all acts were on schedule and deputies had contained what they called "unruly guests."

“They weren't giving us any information at all. And that frustrated me the most,” Lopez said.

For others the experience was the opposite. A KAABOO spokesperson apologized to those who couldn't enjoy Encore, saying they couldn't allow more people in the venue due to safety reasons.

Still, Philip Nauman said he felt far from safe.

“There were three police officers that I would say I was legitimately scared of,” he told NBC 7.

Authorities say the crowd became unruly but Nauman argues deputies are to blame.

“It seemed like sort of a bullying situation where they were inciting it instead of stopping the incidents from happening,” Nauman contended.

Deputies arrested up to four people, at least one for pushing a sergeant.

Teen With Down Syndrome Scores TD

Two high school football teams in suburban Detroit came together Friday to give one young man his opportunity to shine.

Robby Heil, of Novi, Michigan, has Down syndrome. He's a senior at Novi High School, and proudly sports a jersey with the No. 24 as the football team's longtime water boy.

"Our team's seen him as part of the family," Novi coach Jeff Burnside told NBC affiliate WDIV.

So when they learned that Robby's mother Debbie was battling cancer, they hatched a plan to give their family a very special memory.

After a timeout during Friday's game against South Lyon High School, who was in on the plan, Robby took the field ready to play. The quarterback handed him the ball and he took off, running more than 20 yards to score a touchdown.

Debbie had no idea it was coming, and grew emotional watching her son fulfill a lifelong dream.

"It was incredible, I did not know about this," Debbie told WDIV through tears. "This team has just been so instrumental with helping me get him to practice like when I'm at chemo, and it really takes a village to raise my son and this village has really been outstanding."

"No matter how bad a day he's having, it's a smile from ear-to-ear," Coach Burnside said. "An opportunity to put that helmet on tonight, it brought tears to my eyes and I'm pretty sure tears all over the place."

While the touchdown didn't count for the game, even the opposing team joined in celebrating Heil's victory, presenting him with a South Lyon jersey bearing the No. 1.

Concern for Multiple Actors After NJ, NYC Bombings

$

A series of planted bombs in New York and New Jersey have authorities concerned about the possibility of multiple actors in the tri-state area, law enforcement officials said.

"We have to look at every possibility here," Mayor de Blasio said on MSNBC. "It could be a lone wolf, it could be something bigger."

Early Monday, authorities identified 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Afghanistan, as a suspect in the Chelsea bombing, and multiple law enforcement officials say he is also being sought in connection with the New Jersey pipe bombs. Senior law enforcement sources say officials are looking into whether anyone else may have been involved.

The chaos began to unfold Saturday morning, when a pipe bomb exploded in a trash can near a Marine race in Seaside Park, New Jersey. The race had been running late, and authorities have said they believed the device was timed to detonate when runners would be racing by the bin. Hours later, an explosive device went off in or near a large construction bin on a busy block in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, leaving 29 people with minor injuries.

Another device was found four blocks away and removed to a Bronx firing range for controlled detonation. Then, late Sunday, five pipe bombs were found in a trash can near an NJ Transit station in Elizabeth New Jersey. One of the bombs exploded as a robot tried to disarm it. No one was hurt.

Armed FBI agents surrounded a home and fried chicken restaurant in Elizabeth hours after the bombs were found. The armed agents, including some from the ATF and FBI, swarmed "First American Fried Chicken" on Elmora Avenue just before 6 a.m. The investigators were going in and out of the restaurant as rain poured down. A residence above the restaurant is believed to be tied to explosives found at the Elizabeth station, although that hasn't been confirmed.

The pipe bombs were similar to the one that detonated in Seaside Park, New Jersey, over the weekend before a Marine race.

Service on several NJ Transit lines was suspended and service along Amtrak's busy North East Corridor came to a halt amid an investigation at the train station. Service has since been restored to both NJ Transit and Amtrak with delays.

The news of the suspicious bag at the Elizabeth station in New Jersey was first reported late Sunday, around the same time that the FBI said it had taken five people into custody for questioning after a traffic stop on the Verrazano Bridge in connection with Saturday's bombing in Manhattan that hurt 29 people.

The agency said that the five individuals who were taken into custody are from Elizabeth, New Jersey. None of them has been charged with a crime and the investigation is ongoing.

Late Sunday, five devices were found in a trash can near a train station in Elizabeth, New Jersey. A robot trying to disarm the devices inadvertently detonated one, causing an explosion. Family Seeks Justice After Father Shot Dead by Deputies

Dozens took to the streets in Vista on Saturday to protest the death of a man shot and killed by Sheriff's deputies last month.

“Justice for Sergio Weick!” was the cry from family members and police protesters during their march, more than one month after Weick’s death.

Loved ones remembered Weick as a husband and father of five children who had kids as young as 18 months old and as old as 14 years old.

“What they did was wrong,” Weick’s widow, Nena, said of the deputies involved. “They have killed, they have murdered their father. They will go on with life without their father.”

Nena marched through the streets with her five children and dozens of others protesting police brutality.

But San Diego County Sheriff's investigators paint a different picture of Weick, who was a documented gang member.

More than one month before Saturday’s march though Vista, authorities say they had a warrant for Weick’s arrest connected to a SWAT stand-off in 2015.

On August 11, 2016, deputies say they spotted Weick driving near the intersection of North Santa Fe Avenue and Knapp Drive. Deputies recognized the driver of the Lexus as a known gang member who had an active felony warrant for his arrest.

Investigators say Weick refused to pullover for the deputies, leading them on an 8-minute chase that ended in a town home complex in the 100 block of Bronze Way. It’s still unclear exactly what happened next.

Authorities say Weick crashed and continued on foot and “at some point along the narrow walkway, the suspect and deputies became involved in a confrontation,” the original press release stated. “During that confrontation, two deputies fired multiple rounds, striking the suspect several times.”

Officials later identified those two Vista deputies as Peter Myers, an 8-year veteran on the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, and Christopher Villanueva, who has been with the department for two months in addition to two years’ experience as a police officer with another law enforcement agency.

Weick went to the hospital in critical condition and later died. Homicide investigators say the autopsy report showed the cause of death was “trauma from multiple gunshot wounds.”

“He didn't deserve to get shot down like he didn't matter, because he does,” said Weick’s cousin Johnny Hoyt.

Hoyt says deputies aren't telling the whole story and that they must be held accountable.

“We need people out there upholding the law that we can turn to, that we can respect," he said. "People that respect life.”

Shortly after the incident detectives completed their search of the car Weick was driving. They found “a sawed-off shotgun, multiple knives, a sword, additional ammunition for the shotgun and drug paraphernalia” inside the car.

“The Vista Sheriff's Department will forever in my eyes be the Vista Savage Department,” Hoyt said. He says Weick’s body was riddled with 26 gunshot wounds, though investigators have not confirmed how many times he was shot or where.

“We know what he was, we know what he was about but he was also our family member and we miss him,” he said.

Hoyt and others are now pleading for witnesses of the shooting to come forward.

Sheriff’s detectives with the Homicide Unit were not available Saturday to give any updates on the investigation.
