Victims of Homeless Attacks Remembered at Church Service

A local church honored the memory of the victims of a recent string of homeless killings with a memorial service Sunday.

Angelo De Nardo, the first victim of the attacks last month, attended the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of San Diego in Clairemont for years.

"We welcomed him into our midst and we celebrate diversity and we recognized him as a child of God and we’re grateful that this was a place that he could find refuge and solace," Rev. Dan Koeshall of the MCC San Diego, said.

De Nardo’s badly burned body was found by Police in Bay Ho on July third. Two of the other victims were found dead the same week.

De Nardo, 53, had family in Pennsylvania, police said.

Victims Shawn Longley and Dionicio Vahidy were also remembered during the service.

Although the memorial was sparsely attended, church officials said it’s not the amount of people that matters.

"We wanted to say their names and to honor them, and we're grateful for that energy that can go out from here, mighty in love, maybe small in numbers but mighty in love,” Koeshall said.

Koeshall said he was shocked when he heard homeless men were being targeted in San Diego, and it “pierced his heart” when he found out De Nardo was one of the victims.

“What was unique about Angelo is that when he would come to receive a sack lunch he insisted on always giving a dollar,” Koeshall remembered. “He would never just take it. He says ‘I want to give something in return’ and that touched our hearts.”

“Coming out here and showing our respect for his life and honoring the life of, not only Angelo, but the other men who were killed was also a call to action. We need to do more for homeless people in San Diego,” retired assembly member Lori Saldana told NBC 7.

Jon Guerrero of San Diego was arrested on July 15 and is charged with three counts of first degree murder. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

Community to Celebrate Life of Slain SDPD Officer Henwood

Community members will come together Monday to celebrate the life of an officer killed in the line of duty five years ago.

San Diego Police Officer Jeremy Henwood, 36, died after a man pulled up next to his patrol car in City Heights and shot him in August 7, 2011, exactly five years ago. He had served with the department for four years and had also been a Captain in the United States Marine Corps Reserves.

The anniversary of Officer Henwood's death comes just days after hundreds came together to honor the life of SDPD Officer Jonathan De Guzman, buried Friday.

San Diego Police Officer Ed LaValle knew Officer Henwood as a man always willing to help others out, maybe even a little too much.

He still remembers seeing him the night before he died.

"My last words to him probably weren't very nice," LaValle admitted. "I told him basically to get the blank out of my face, and go help somebody else, because he was being a little bit of an annoying person that night, but I wish he was here and I could take that back."

It's a regret Officer LaValle carries five years later even as he struggles to cope with yet another officer's death.

"I think other officers, it will hit them some way as it will with (Officer) De Guzman," he said.

Officer DeValle said in light of fallen Officer De Guzman, killed in the line of duty July 28, and wounded Officer Wade Irwin, this anniversary will hit the community particularly hard.

Monday, thousands are expected to gather for a free barbecue to celebrate the life and legacy of Officer Henwood, a legacy that was in part cemented with his final act of kindness. He was seen on a McDonald's surveillance camera minutes before losing his life, buying food for a child.

"Knowing that his last act of kindness was buying McDonald's for a child who wanted some food, its his generosity that will inspire us and generations to give back," said Mark Arabo, a local business owner who is involved in Monday's barbecue.

By hosting a free Barbecue in San Diego's Mid-City neighborhood Monday, the San Diego Police officers Association and Arabo say they want to continue that legacy of giving.

The celebration of life will take place at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park in City Heights, dedicated in 2014 by local leaders, law enforcement and family members.

Organizers will also be accepting donations for the San Diego Police Officer's Association Widows and Orphans Fund.

Teen Shoots at Uber Driver After Argument: SDPD

A 16-year-old teen fired several shots at his Uber driver's car following an argument over social media posts, San Diego Police said.

The incident happened late Saturday night at after 10 p.m. when a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old called an Uber to pick them up in Mission Beach.

The driver came and picked up the teens, dropping them off at a home in San Diego's Valencia Park neighborhood, police said.

When the teens got out, the 16-year-old realized he left his phone in the Uber and called the driver. The driver agreed to return the teen's phone after he finished driving the new passenger he had just picked up.

The new passenger went through the teen's phone and saw he was talking badly about the driver. They began posting on social media about it, according to SDPD.

When the driver returned the teen's phone, the two got in an argument over the social media posts, police said.

Eventually, police said, the driver drove away. As he left, the 16-year-old fired several shots, police said.

The bullets shattered some of the car's windows, police said.

A representative for Uber told NBC 7 San Diego they have been in contact with the driver involved and are thankful he is okay.

The 16-year-old was arrested a short time later. He has not been identified.

The incident is under investigation.

No other information was immediately available.

Cyclist Involved in Horrific Crash During Women's Road Race

A cyclist from the Netherlands was involved in a horrific crash Sunday afternoon during the women’s road race final in Rio.

Annemiek van Vleuten, 33, was leading the race for gold at the time of the crash.

She was on a downhill decline in a light rain when she attempted to turn right around a bend in the course and her tires appeared to skid out from under her.

She attempted to stop the slide, but instead flew headfirst over the handlebars and slammed into the roadside curb. She lay motionless on the side of the road as other riders eventually passed her. At least one medic could be seen running to the scene right after the crash.

The Dutch cycling federation tweeted that she suffered three small vertebrae fractures and a severe concussion. Officials said she will spend 24 hours in intensive care.  They said that she was conscious when she was transported from the course to a local hospital.

Yesterday van Vleuten tweeted a selfie and said she was ready for the race to begin:

Sunday's race eventually was won during a dramatic sprint to the finish by van Vleuten's teammate, Anna Van Der Breggen.

The crash by van Vleuten was similar to one that occurred the day before during a men's race. Italian rider Vincenzo Nibali was leading that race when he crashed and broke his collarbone.

Local Athletes Compete in Rio Games: Aug. 7

It’s the first weekend of the 2016 Rio Games, and several San Diego athletes battled to make their mark in the competition early as they represent Team USA.

On Sunday, local athletes found hard to advance in women's rugby and volleyball - both indoor and beach.

Jessica Javelet, Torrey Pines High School alumna, Richelle Stephens, Fallbrook High School alumna and Jillion Potter, another Olympian who trains at the Chula Vista OTC, took on New Zealand Sunday in Women's Rugby.

The Americans pushed both leading contenders for the gold medal in back-to-back matches on the second day of competition but will have to settle for playing in classification matches for 5th-8th places along with the other quarterfinal losers.

The U.S. women will now play Fiji on Monday at 1:00 p.m. ET to determine their final Olympic ranking. They can finish anywhere from fifth to eighth.

Carlsbad native and Carlsbad High School alum Lauren Fendrick and her partner Brooke Sweat struggled in a hard-fought match against a Polish duo. Find the results here. They will play again on Tuesday.

David Lee, an Alpine native, took to the court Sunday to compete with the Men's Volleyball team for this first time at Maracanazinho in the Maracana. Find the team's results here.

A Dutch cyclist flipped off her bicycle in a horrendous crash, a U.S. women's volleyball pair was taunted with shouts of "Zika," and the U.S. ended a fencing medal drought on the second day of the 2016 Olympics. U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky broke her own world record in the 400 meter freestyle.

[[389408561, C]]

In case you missed any of the nail-biting moments of competition, here are highlights from Sunday in Rio.

A Swimming World Record
American Katie Ledecky, 19, broke her own world record in the 400-meter freestyle, to win a gold medal. Her time: 3:56.46. She set her earlier record, 3:58.37, two years ago on the Gold Coast of Australia. On Saturday she was part of the U.S. women’s team silver medal win in the 4 by 100 meters freestyle relay.

[[389438601, C]]

Ledecky, who will enroll in Stanford University in the fall, won a gold medal in her Olympic debut in London in 2012 when she was only 15.

Michael Phelps won his 19th gold medal and 23rd medal overall as part of the U.S. men's team in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

[[389454402, C]]

A Heart-Stopping Crash
A cyclist from the Netherlands, Annemiek van Vleuten, was racing downhill, in the lead for the gold medal at a curve in the road, when her tires appeared to skid out from under her. Van Vlueten, 33, flew over her handlebars and landed on the curb, her head on the roadway, and lay without moving as other riders passed her.

[[389423381, C]], C]]

The Dutch cycling federation said she had a severe concussion and three small fractures to her spine. Later, van Vleuten tweeted, "I am now in the hospital with some injuries and fractures, but will be fine. Most of all super disappointed after best race of my career."

The race was won in a dramatic sprint by her teammate, Anna van der Breggen, who working with two others riders caught American rival Mara Abbott to win the gold. Van der Breggen passed her teammate on the way to the finish line.

Italy's Vincenzo Nibali broke a collarbone when he crashed on the same descent while leading the men's race on Saturday.

Hoops History
The U.S. women's basketball team scored 121 points to beat Senegal, a record-setting score in the team's first game of the Olympics.

[[389418891, C]]

The Americans won 121 to 56, beating the previous high score of 114, which was set in 1992 and tied at the London Olympics.

The United States is trying for its sixth straight Olympic gold medal.

Zika Taunts
Brazilians apparently unhappy with the attention given the threat from the Zika virus are taunting American athletes with chants of "Zika."

At beach volleyball at Copacabana beach on Sunday, a loud crowd shouted "Zika" at Americans Lauren Fendrick and Brook Sweat when they served against their Polish opponents. They lost their first Olympic match.

Hope Solo got the same treatment the day before. The U.S. soccer goalkeeper had posted a photo of herself on social media wearing netting and armed with insect repellent to guard against the virus linked to microcephaly in newborns. Solo was worried enough about the virus that she considered skipping the Olympics.

The U.S. beat France, the team's second consecutive win.

Fencing
Alexander Massialas ended a 32-year medal drought in men's fencing for the United States, winning a silver in Rio. Massialas, foil fencer whose Olympian father, Greg Massialas, is his coach, had been the heavy favorite to win a gold, but lost to Italy's Daniele Garozzo.

[[389427001, C]]

The last time the United States won a men's fencing medal of any kind was in 1984, when Peter Westbrook took a bronze. The last time an American man won in this event was 56 years ago. Albert Axelrod also brought home a bronze.

U.S Gymnastics Women Dominate
All five women earned a spot in either the all-around or events finals. Simone Biles and Aly Raisman will compete in both.

[[389437831, C]]

Gabby Douglas was third in all-around, but can't defend her title because Biles and Raisman finished ahead of her - and each country is limited to two qualifiers.

[[389437641, C]]

Olympic History
History will be made as U.S. team member Ibtihaj Muhammad becomes the first American to compete in the Olympics wearing a hijab. She makes her Olympic debut at 11 a.m. ET Monday.

Bosa's Mom Not Happy With Chargers

0

The Chargers are having issues with another first round Draft pick. And his mom.

Defensive end Joey Bosa, the 3rd overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, has been at odds with the Bolts front office over the structure of his contract and is currently holding out of training camp. Bosa is the only player drafted in 2016 that has yet to sign his deal.

The Chargers have not spoken to Bosa’s agent Tom Condon in more than a week and reports have been trickling out that the team is offering him LESS money than players taken after him. We know that the Chargers have been balking on when bonuses will be paid out, trying to push them back to years three and four of the deal while Bosa wants more up front.

Meanwhile, two distinct camps have formed among Chargers fans, some supporting the team and others supporting the player. On Sunday Bosa’s mother invoked the name that draws the ire of all San Diego football fans. The story started circulating due to a report on SD Bolt Report.

In a conversation on Facebook, Cheryl Bosa wrote to a friend who was showing support for her son: “It bums me out for him so much. Wish we pulled an Eli Manning on draft day.”

In 2004 Eli Manning was famously taken first overall by the Chargers but refused to play for them, forcing a trade to the New York Giants in a deal that brought Philip Rivers to San Diego. Although it happened 12 years ago it is still a situation that angers many a Bolts supporter.

Bosa does have the ability to request a trade to a team that would then sign him to his first professional contract. He also has the option of simply not playing this year for the Chargers and going back in to the 2017 NFL Draft.

[[389478891, C]]

Van Vleuten was still in the hospital Monday morning, waiting for news of her release.

“Still in the hospital. Waiting for some research&hope I can leave today. Knowing that this chance is 1 in 4 years, doesn't make it easy.”

[[389479981, C]]

On Sunday, the Dutch cycing federation tweeted that she suffered three small fractures in her spine as well as a severe concussion.

The 33-year-old tweeted Sunday night that she was “super disappointed” but assured fans she was on the road to recovery: "I am now in the hospital with some injuries and fractures, but will be fine. Most of all super disappointed after best race of my career."

The first two days of the Games have been rough for several athletes.

[[389476601, C]]

French gymnast Samir Ait Said snapped his leg on Saturday, fracturing his tibia during the vault at the men's qualifying rounds.

And Great Britain gymnast Ellie Downie suffered a scary fall onto her neck during floor exercise. She was led off the floor by medical staff but returned for vault and qualified for the all-around final.

Delta passengers around the world including those arriving and departing San Diego experienced delays Monday due to a system-wide computer failure.

Delta Air Lines resumed a limited number of departure flights shortly before 6 a.m. PT,  nearly six hours after after a power outage hit its computer systems and grounded flights globally.

At San Diego International Airport, officials couldn’t tell NBC 7 if flights leaving our area would be affected. Travelers heading to Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis, JFK , Detroit and Atlanta may see delays or a cancellation.

Delta advises customers heading to the airport to expect delays and cancellations.

There may also be some lag time in the display of accurate flight status at delta.com, the Fly Delta App and from Delta representatives on the phone and in airport, according to a company statement.

Passengers may opt for a full refund of their ticket price if their flight was delayed or cancelled, Delta said. Passengers with flights scheduled between Aug. 8 and Aug. 12, who wish to change their ticket, may due so without incurring change fees.

Hillary Clinton will focus on the economy this week as she lays out plans for what her campaign describes as "the biggest investment in good-paying jobs since World War II."

On Monday, Clinton will visit the battleground state of Florida, where she will tour a small brewery and hold two rallies. On Thursday, she is set to deliver her own economic speech in Detroit, a city that has symbolized the nation's manufacturing plight.

Clinton has argued that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is focused only on the wealthiest Americans. She has questioned his commitment to creating U.S. jobs, given the history of outsourcing at his companies.

AT&T will pay $7.75 million after a federal investigation found it allowed unauthorized third-party charges on its customers' telephone bills, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission said Monday.

The company allowed "scammers to charge customers approximately $9 per month for a sham directory assistance service," the FCC said Monday. The fraud was uncovered by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration while investigating two Ohio companies for drug-related crimes and money laundering, the FCC said.

The settlement includes $6.8 million in refunds and a $950,000 federal fine. AT&T did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters reported.

The chief policy director for the House GOP, is launching an independent bid for the White House, NBC News reported.

Evan McMullin's conservative candidacy could revive the opposition that anti-Trump Republicans have expressed toward their party's nominee.

In a statement explaining why he decided to pursue the presidency, McMullin on Monday wrote that Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton is a "corrupt career politician" while Republican contender Donald Trump "appeals to the worst fears of Americans at a time we need unity."

He maintained that with the high stakes of this election, he could not afford to be a bystander.

"Our country needs leaders who are in it for the right reasons and who actually understand what makes this country the greatest on earth," McMullin said in the statement.

Top GOP Officials: Trump Would Be 'Reckless' President

A blistering letter signed by 50 Republican national security officials states that not one of them will vote for Donald Trump come November, declaring the GOP nominee "lacks the character, values, and experience to be President."

The letter describes Trump's lack of knowledge of the Constitution and U.S. laws and lambastes the candidate for appearing to have "no interest in educating himself."

Among those who signed the letter are former Deputy Attorney General Donald Ayer, former Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Planning Robert Blackwill and former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, NBC News reported.

"A president must be disciplined, control emotions, and act only after reflection and careful deliberation," the letter states. "In our judgment, Mr. Trump has none of these critical qualities ... We are convinced that in the Oval Office, he would be the most reckless President in American history."

Chinese Tourist Spends 12 Days in German Refugee Camp

A Chinese tourist who tried to report a stolen wallet during a visit to Germany unwittingly signed an asylum application that got him stranded as a refugee for two weeks in the country's burgeoning asylum bureaucracy, Reuters reported.

The well-dressed 31-year-old, known as Mr L., spoke only Mandarin. German authorities only discovered their mistake after turning in desperation to a local Chinese restaurant to interpret for them, a Red Cross official said on Monday.

"He didn't speak any German or English — only Mandarin," Christoph Schluetermann, head of a Red Cross refugee center in the northern town of Duelmen, told Reuters after the man from Beijing was released to resume his tour of Europe.

It all began when he was robbed in the tourist town of Heidelberg. Mr. L. went to city hall, which he thought was a police station, where he signed an asylum application.
