Missing Mom Discovered on the Web

A random stroke of good luck helped a Florida boy reunite his father with his mother who went missing in November and had been presumed dead, thanks to a YouTube video.

Evan Olsen, 10, said he was on YouTube with a friend and randomly clicked on a video of YouTube sensation Brooke Roberts feeding the homeless on Los Angeles' Skid Row when he recognized his mother.

"Now that I've found my mom, I'm the happiest kid alive," said Evan.

Evan told his dad, Eddie Olsen, who jumped out of the shower and confirmed that it was Evan's mother, who is homeless. Eddie Olsen and Evan’s mother were in a relationship when they had Evan.

"He hugged me tighter than he's ever hugged me in his life and I could feel all those past days disappear," Eddie said of his son.

Eddie emailed Roberts, 19, who said he initially thought the email was a joke, but wound up scouring Skid Row with Eddie and Evan in search of Evan's mom this week.

"I'm still in shock," Roberts said. "I wake up every day and ask, 'was it a dream?'"

After hours of searching, Eddie found his ex-girlfriend, but while she recognized him, she didn’t want to return to Florida with them. She suffers from schizophrenia.

Eddie gave her clothes, letters from Evan and other family members, paid for a hotel room and a cellphone to stay in contact with the family.

Eddie returned to Florida, while the mother remained on Skid Row, he said.

Eddie said he would like for her to return and get the medication she needs.

Evan is hopeful.

"I know that she wants to come back and come home," said Evan, who also started a gofundme page. "I know that she would love to do that.”

He said he talks with her by phone every night before going to bed.

Eddie credits Roberts with helping make the connection.

"There's no way I could ever repay what he's done for me," he said.

Roberts feels blessed.

"I'm still in contact with Eddie every single day and we're still crying on the phone," said Roberts.

Local Athletes Compete in Rio Games: Aug. 6

As the first weekend of the 2016 Rio Games kicked off Saturday, several athletes with ties to San Diego hoped to make their mark in the competition. And one team was especially on point.

Team USA's men's archery team was sharp out there, earning the silver medal after Saturday's rounds.

The team includes Brady Ellision and Zach Garrett, both of whom are current resident athletes at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center (OTC) in San Diego County.

They were helped by teammate Jake Kaminski, who trained at the Chula Vista OTC from 2008 to 2012.

The archery rounds continue through Aug. 12. The women's archery team for the U.S. includes Mackenzie Brown, also a resident Chula Vista OTC athlete. Brown competes on Sunday morning.

Other local athletes who competed in Rio Saturday included Olympians with the women's rugby team, men's water polo team and rowers.

Today's contenders with ties to San Diego included Tyler Nase, who competed in the rowing lightweight 4 event at 8:30 a.m. at Lagoa Stadium in Copacabana.

Nase often trains at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center (OTC) in San Diego’s South Bay. He and his lightweight four finished in sixth place in their heat Saturday, with a time of 6:05:61. Nase will likely compete again on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Alex Bowen, the men’s water polo athlete from Santee, and an alumnus of Santana High School, competed with his team at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center in Barra Saturday at 10:20 a.m. against Croatia. To see the results, click here.

Jesse Smith, a Coronado resident and Coronado High School alumnus, also hopped in the water and competed with the USA men’s water polo team Saturday against Croatia. The Rio 2016 water polo events last through Aug. 20.

Jessica Javelet, an alumna of Torrey Pines High School, competed in women’s rugby Saturday against Fiji at the Deodoro Stadium in Deodoro, a neighborhood in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. This marked the first Olympic women's rugby match ever played. Read the results here.

Richelle Stephens, an Olympic athlete and Fallbrook High School alumna, joined Javelet in the women’s rugby competition. Jillion Potter, another Olympian who trains at the Chula Vista OTC, also competed in women’s rugby Saturday alongside Stephens and Javelet.

The USA women's rugby team won its second match Saturday.

Carli Lloyd, a Bonsall native and Fallbrook High School graduate, Lloyd competed in indoor volleyball Saturday from Maracanazinho in Maracaña -- on her 27th birthday, no less. In the exciting match against Puerto Rico, Lloyd's team won.

And yes, she happens to have the same exact name as Carli Lloyd, the Team USA women's soccer star. Rio is big enough for both of them.

New Documentary to Detail McDonald's Massacre in San Ysidro

Adriana Wright and retired police captain Paul Ybarrando met at Southwestern Community College for a handshake that was 32 years in the making.

“I grew up knowing they were there to serve and protect,” said Wright. “In this case they did not serve and did not protect."

Wright was talking about the July 18, 1984 McDonald’s Massacre in San Ysidro in which four of her family members were killed and two others injured.

The memory brought Wright to tears.

“It’s been 32 years. I thought I'd healed," she said.

For the first time since that dire day Wright sat down with Ybarrando then a homicide lieutenant investigating the murders.

“The first officer arrived two minutes after the radio call,” Ybarrando explained.

Their discussion is part of a soon to be released documentary called "77 Minutes," the often criticized time it took for SWAT to take down the shooter.

“It was like two to three inches of blood,” Wright told Ybarrando. “A red carpet of blood."

Wright remembered how survivors including her niece, Aurora Pena described the scene, telling her gunshot victims would have survived but bled out waiting to be rescued.

“The coroner’s office is the one who determines these things. They told us there were 13 deceased victims that would have died instantly.”

21 people were killed and 19 others were injured that fateful day - a day that, for a time, was the deadliest mass shooting in the United States.

Director Charlie Minn hopes to start a movement with his documentary, saying you won't see or hear the name of the shooter who may have suffered from mental health issues.

“I don't address cowards. All focus should be on victims," Minn said.

Adriana Wright was scarred by the loss of her pregnant sister Jackie and her eight-month-old nephew Carlos Reyes.

“I didn’t have time to feel her loss because everyone else was hurting. I had to fix everything. I had to prepare funerals," she said.

The documentary is scheduled to be released in September. The director says he plans to donate part of the proceeds to funds of murdered San Diego Police Officer Jonathan “JD” De Guzman and his wounded partner Wade Irwin.

Police Safety Fair Promotes Understanding

Police sirens blared as youngsters got up close and personal with emergency first responders Saturday.

The La Mesa Police Department hosted its fifth annual safety fair to help bring understanding between law enforcement and the community Saturday.

Participants learned about everything from fire safety to crime prevention by those on the front lines.

"We want people to learn how you can protect your car from break-ins, your home from break-ins,” Lt. Chad Bell of the La Mesa Police Department told NBC 7.

But for officers and citizens “overall good will towards the police department and fire department" is paramount for a city in mourning.

People lined the streets for the funeral of San Diego Police Officer Jonathan De Guzman Thursday. De Guzman was gunned down during a traffic stop in Southcrest just over a week ago. "We've had people that have brought out cards to show their appreciation and the officers absolutely love that,” Bell said.

Whether it was the community’s tiniest members climbing aboard a swat vehicle or adults learning more about how officers respond to a crisis, Saturday was about appreciating law enforcement.

“We'll never not go to a 911 call, but just getting the support that we're getting today is just amazing,” Bell said.

At Least 14 Hospitalized Following San Francisco Quinceañera

Emergency responders rushed to the scene of a Quinceañera party in San Francisco to treat 14 people, all of whom were then taken to the hospital in "moderate condition" for ingesting an unknown substance.

Of the 14 people, seven are minors. One 9-year-old is in critical condition. Police ruled out a HAZMAT situation, and sources said that it seemed as if a "watermelon candy substance" could be to blame.

The birthday celebration was being held at the Women's Building, where several community and social service events are held. The San Francisco Fire Department asked that people try and avoid that corridor of 18th Street and Valencia.

People taken to the hospital reported heart palipitations, rashes and shortness of breath, according to officials. One woman leaving the building told NBC Bay Area reporter Christie Smith that those who got sick had a foamy-type substance coming from their mouth.

"It appears this is a candy substance, but that has to be vetted and verified," said Jonathan Baxter of the San Francisco Fire Department.

Anyone who knows anything or has any symptoms is asked to call the police.

Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius was treated for injuries he suffered in prison, NBC News reported.

Pistorius told prison staff he fell out of bed and injured himself, Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for South Africa's Department of Correctional Services, told NBC News. Nxumalo would not disclose the nature of his injuries.

Nxumalo told NBC News the former Paralymic champion was taken to the Kalafong hospital in Pretoria on Saturday and was returned to prison later in the day.

Reuters reported that Pistorius was treated for minor injuries to his wrist, but NBC News was not able to verify that report.

The double-amputee was sentenced to six years in prison in July for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

A Syrian refugee has been crowned “wine queen” by the German town of Trier, NBC News reported.

Ninorta Banho, 26, is the first asylum seeker chosen to represent a wine-growing region in the Mosel region. The honor is traditionally given to local young women from local families.

The practice of choosing a wine queen dates back to the early 20th century when selected women wear traditional dirndl dresses.

"I want to show that Germany is a welcoming country and that the Germans are very hospitable and work towards integrating refugees quickly and successfully," Banho told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle at her crowning ceremony in Trier.

Banho was chosen by winemakers who wanted to dispel anger aimed at refugees in Germany. The country took in 1.1 million migrants in 2015.

U.S. Archer Looks Quite a Bit Like Leonardo DiCaprio

No, that's not Leo with a bow and arrow.

American archer Brady Ellison helped Team USA win the silver medal in Rio for the second Olympics in a row. But Ellison's skills with a bow wasn't what targeted him for a mention as a Twitter "moment" this Games.

Instead it was the Olympian's shared resemblance to Leonardo DiCapario.

"Leo DiCaprio enjoying some time off from acting to play archery in the Rio Olympics," read one message.

Ellison, who lives in his home-state Arizona after years of training in Chula Vista, California, is a star in his own right. He is the first recurve archer in history to win three World Cup titles.

The now third-time Olympian helped the U.S. archery team secure its silver in London before repeating the feat in Rio on Saturday. South Korea took the gold.

Individual play resumes on Monday with Ellison set to compete again on Tuesday.

"I feel good and it is definitely the least nervous that I have ever been at the Games," he said, TeamUSA.org reported. "I am excited, pumped up and looking for a medal.”

The real Leo has not commented on his Olympic doppelgänger.

Pro-Trump Super PAC Ad Targets Clinton on Wealth

A new ad attacking Hillary Clinton by the super PAC supporting Donald Trump will begin airing Monday, NBC News reported.

The ad accuses Clinton of profiting from decades of political connections.

"A foundation was created and money started to roll," a narrator says in the ad, part of a $3 million buy by pro-Trump group Rebuilding America Now. "The Clintons are now worth an excess of $100 million dollars," the ad continues.

The ad capitalizes on Clinton’s own comments when she promoted her memoir in 2014, in which she said she and former President Bill Clinton left the White House nearly broke at the end of his presidency.

This summer, the super PAC released an ad juxtaposing Clinton’s defense of her private email server with her husband’s infamous denial of infidelity with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

Kaine Says He & Clinton Will be 'Transparent' on Emails

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine found himself having to answer questions about Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, NBC News reported.

In an interview on "Fox News Sunday" last week, Clinton claimed FBI director James Comey found her answers on the controversy "truthful" and "consistent" with her past public statements.

During an appearance on “Meet the Press,” Kaine said he thought "Chris Wallace and Hillary were sort of talking past each other last week."

"She was saying what Director Comey acknowledged to be true, that when she spoke to the FBI ... the FBI thought her answers in that setting were truthful. Chris might have been asking her a different question."

"I am not presumptuous enough to start thinking about how I'm going to do things after November,” Kaine said when asked if he and Clinton would be more transparent in the White House.

2 Skydivers Killed in Tandem Jump

Two skydivers were killed Saturday during a tandem jump in northern California, authorities said Saturday.

Their bodies were found in a Lodi-area vineyard after someone reported that the skydivers hit the ground without an open parachute, San Joaquin County Sheriff's Deputy Les Garcia said.

It appeared the parachute did not deploy until after impact, he said.

Authorities were working to identify the bodies, but Riley said it appears the victims, both males, were in their 20s. One was an instructor, he said.

They had jumped from the Parachute Center, a popular skydiving school in the state's Central Valley whose website declares it "one of the largest and oldest drop zones in the United States,'' launched in 1964.

The website offers an introductory tandem jump with an instructor for $100, from 13,000 feet.

The center has been in the news before. In May, a small plane carrying 17 skydivers took off from the Parachute Center and landed upside-down after clipping a pickup. The worst injuries were minor cuts and scrapes.

And in February, the Lodi News-Sentinel reported that a solo skydiver had died after a parachute malfunction at the center.

A man answering the phone Saturday at the Parachute Center said he was busy and did not know if two men had died. Parachute Center owner Bill Dause declined comment to the Sacramento Bee.

An exact cause will be determined by the Federal Aviation Administration, Riley said.

Among Both Visitors and Staff, National Park Service Looks to Grow Diversity

The National Park Service is working to diversify visitors to parks -- and staffers -- across the country, NBC News reported.

As the National Park Service celebrates its centennial this August, the agency is turning its focus to making sure both visitors and staff are more diverse. The National Park Service had record high attendance last year — 307 million visitors, to be precise — but fewer than 20 percent of those attendees were minorities.

This is a stark contrast from the country's actual makeup. According to Census data, minorities comprise nearly 40 percent of the nation.

Gov. Scott on Trump's Tax Returns: 'Every Candidate's Different'

Within the context of Donald Trump refusing to release his tax returns, Florida Governor Rick Scott was asked in an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" why he chose to release his tax returns when he ran for governor.

"I figured my view is: give everybody all the information and let them make good decisions. As you know, every candidate does things differently. Not everybody releases their tax returns."

Scott is heading up a pro-Trump super PAC, targeting Hillary Clinton on her wealth.

While Scott's super PAC goes after Clinton on issues of transparency, there is a question of whether Trump cedes the high ground here by not releasing his own tax returns.

"Every candidate's going to do something different," Scott repeated.

Slain Runner's Family Wants Justice

The family of a runner whose body was found in a Queens marsh late Tuesday after she was reported missing had strong words for the 30-year-old's killer.

"I’m here to remind you in case you don’t already know that now, it’s the whole entire world against you," said Cathie Vetrano, mother of Karina Vetrano. "The whole entire world knows what a pathetic, puny, weak, piece of filth that you are. The whole world knows that and soon I know they’re all going to know your face."

Cathie Vetrano said her daughter was a "force to be reckoned with," and that her killer "will be reckoning with that force not only for the rest of your pathetic life but for the rest of eternity as you f---ing burn in hell."

Phil Vetrano thanked the police for their work investigating the killing and sexual assault of his daughter.

"This press conference is all about thanks," Phil Vetrano said. "Myself and my family owe everything to the NYPD, and can only ever hope to bring justice for my daughter Karina through them and their hard work."

NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Thursday that the department believes there is a "severe community threat" after the killing of Vetrano, who left her Howard Beach home to run near Gateway National Park Tuesday afternoon and never came home. The department is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Boyce, who previously said the circumstances of the killing were "extraordinarily rare," confirmed that Vetrano had been sexually assaulted in the attack, but that she "put up a ferocious fight right until the end."

"She was beaten quite severely which suggests she put up a good fight," he said.

On Friday afternoon, investigators found Vetrano's missing sneaker and earbud in the weeds near a running path, sources said, alongside a secluded, overgrown marsh at the edge of Jamaica Bay.

Law enforcement sources say nothing in Vetrano's personal life raised a red flag. Investigators are questioning local sex offenders, a routine step. A public sex offender registry shows nine level-three offenders in the neighborhood.

The young woman worked as a caterer for RV Rooftop at Vetro, which said in an Instagram post it would be closed Wednesday to hold a candlelight vigil in remembrance. She was a world traveler and aspiring writer, and on her blog, she wrote about her life: "It's chaotic and unpredictable, but I do believe that on some days, it's quite beautiful, in all its poetic little tragedies."

No arrests have been made in the case, and authorities are reviewing digital evidence from the park.

Anyone with information about Vetrano's death should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

Handball Team Rescues Tennis Star From Olympic Elevator

The biggest moment so far for the Argentinian handball team at the 2016 Rio Olympics may not have occurred on the court.

No, it may have happened in an Olympic Village elevator.

That's where Argentinian tennis star Juan Martin Del Potro found himself stuck in the dark, without cell phone service, for 40 minutes on Sunday, according to his publicist, Jorge Viale.

[[389426041, C]]

Viale said it was the handball team that came to the rescue. It was a good thing they did, as Del Potro -- who is best known for downing Roger Federer to win the 2009 U.S. Open -- was scheduled to take on Novak Djokovic in a first-round match just hours later.

Handballer Fede Pizarro tweeted out the following proof of the rescue by the “Gladiators” — a photo with the tennis star.

[[389426201, C]]

Pizarro made more news of his own with a nifty goal in his team’s match Sunday against Denmark when he added a little fade to his penalty shot attempt.

Unfortunately, the shot didn’t end as well as the rescue, as the officials disallowed it because his foot crossed the nine-meter threshold.

Next Summer Could be Special for San Diego Sports Fans

$
0
0

Sure we had the 2016 Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Petco Park and all the festivities that go along with it, but other than that, this summer hasn’t been good to San Diego sports fans.

The Padres, once again sitting in the National League West cellar, traded away a chunk of their Opening Day starters before the trade deadline and the Chargers stadium saga continues while first round draft pick Joey Bosa still hasn’t signed with the team.

But next summer should be much better and there are two reasons why: Trevor Hoffman and LaDainian Tomlinson.

In his first year of eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame, former Padres closer Hoffman came short of the mandatory 75 percent of votes this year with 67.3 percent and just needs to pick up 7.3 percent of the vote in 2017.

The seven-time All-Star was the first MLB closer to record 600 career saves and retired from the game in 2010 as the all-time saves leader with 601 before Yankees great Mariano Rivera passed him the following season on his way to 652. Hoffman was also a four-time MLB Delivery Man of the Month Award winner, NL saves champion twice, Sporting News Reliever of the Year three-times and has the National League Reliever of the Year award named after him. Not bad for an 18-year career.

But relief pitchers with no significant starting experience have never been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in their first year. So 2017 should be the year Trevor Hoffman joins Tony Gwynn and Dave Winfield as Padres in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

2017 is also the first year former Chargers great LaDainian Tomlinson is eligible to go into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In 2006, Tomlinson had the best season an NFL running back has ever had. He set an NFL-record with 31 touchdowns, 28 on the ground and 3 receiving, on his way to being named league MVP, NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Walter Payton Award winner, NFL rushing yards leader and NFL rushing touchdowns leader. But that was only one year.

During his 11-year career (nine of which he spent with the Chargers) LT was a five-time Pro Bowler, two-time NFL rushing yards leader, three-time NFL rushing touchdowns leader, a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, holds the NFL record with 18 consecutive games with a touchdown and rushed for over 1,200 yards in seven straight seasons. He also hung up the cleats with the second-most rushing touchdowns (145) and fifth-most rushing yards (13,684) in NFL history.

The former first round draft pick out of Texas Christian University will need at least 80 percent of the votes from the 46-member selection committee to make it to the Hall in his first try. Tomlinson should get that in a class that has no real surefire candidate with Brian Dawkins, Donovan McNabb, Chad Johnson, Jason Taylor and Hines Ward also eligible.

Trevor Hoffman and LaDainian Tomlinson are already immortalized in the Padres and Chargers team Hall of Fames. Barring any heartbreak that San Diego sports fans are unfortunately used to, the two have a very good chance of being Hall of Famers in Cooperstown, New York and Canton Ohio next summer.

Local Marine Represents Team USA in Rio

Second Lieutenant David Higgins is competing for the USA in men’s 50-meter prone rifle shooting. The 21-year-old from San Clemente trained for the Olympic event while stationed in San Diego at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

He began shooting rifle at 13 years old. After graduating from high school, Higgins was nominated to attend the Air Force Academy where he was presented the opportunity to shoot rifle competitively. Prior to graduation from the academy, Higgins made the decision to cross commission into the United States Marine Corps.

In an interview for the Marine Corps, Higgins said, “My dad is a Marine, so I grew up in the Marine culture,” said Higgins. “Not only did I want to follow in his footsteps, but I also wanted to lead Marines and was more interested in the ground-based aspect of the Marine Corps.”

And to earn the title ‘Marine Officer,’ you must excel in leadership, academics and physical training. For one newly commissioned Marine Corps officer, not only did he achieve his goal of earning the title Marine, he has also qualified to compete for the United States during the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Higgins said the Marine Corps and the Olympics are both a good fit for him because he loves competing. "Going to the Olympics gives me the chance to compete at the highest level in the world,” Higgins said.
