In Lemon Grove, deputies are searching for the suspect in an attempted carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon Tuesday.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO), 54-year old Dexter Prewitt allegedly attempted to steal the victim's car in the parking area of a strip mall.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on the 7900 block of Broadway in Lemon Grove.

In broad daylight, investigators and witnesses say Prewitt attempted to take the car and abduct the driver's wife and child.

But witnesses say the driver fought back before the suspect escaped on foot.

SDSO says the driver sustained a cut to his arm during the assault but declined to go to a hospital.

When deputies arrived, they set up a perimeter and began a building and property search to locate Prewitt.

At this time, he is still outstanding.

“My dad always says he doesn't feel safe here and that he would atcually like to move. This Lemon Grove area really isn't that safe," witness Francisco Palamino said. "I don't really care though. I feel like if somebody is going to do something bad they're going to do it anyway."

Prewitt is described to be around 6-feet tall, with salt and pepper colored hair. He had been wearing a faded yellow polo shirt and faded jeans with white tennis shoes.

SDSO says they not believe Prewitt is armed but say he may be assaultive.

Anyone with information is asked to call the SDSO non-emergency line at (858)565-5200.

Calif. Student Remembered at Vigil

Hundreds of students at the University of California at Berkeley paid their respects to a fellow classmate and 19 other hostages killed in Bangladesh during a vigil Tuesday afternoon.

Tarishi Jain, a sophomore economics major, was remembered for her community involvement and keen attention to the well-being of global relationships.

"She was so ambitious," said Berkeley student Dana Albert. "Constantly doing well in her studies."

Jain was interning at a bank in Dhaka this summer and was at the Holey Artisan Bakery when armed militants stormed the eatery and killed 20 hostages last Friday.

The act of terror hit close to home for Albert who lived in the same dormitory as Jain last year.

"You think that it's so far away that it doesn't occur to you," Albert said. "And it does and it's the most soul-wrenching thing to ever happen."

During her time at Berkeley, Jain was an active member of the International Advisory Board, a group that provides guidance to and helps organize events for international students on campus, the university said.

She also spent time developing a clothing line called EthiCal Apparel, with profits reinvested to provide microloans to low-income people who lack access to banking services.

"She was a very talented young lady with a passion to make a positive difference in the world," said Sujit Chowdhury, a quality-management strategist whose donation launched UC Berkeley’s Center for Bangladesh Studies. "It is not just a loss for India or UC Berkeley, but a loss for the world."

La Mesa’s Brault Strikes Out Five in MLB Debut

Tuesday was a memorable day for La Mesa native Steven Brault.

The 24-year-old pitcher made his Major League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates and helped his team earn a 5-2 victory in Saint Louis.

Against the Cardinals, Brault showed flashes of brilliance and allowed only two runs (one earned) in four innings of work.

Part of the reason he was pulled is because his pitch count was already up to 82 after four frames. But he did strike out five batters and left with the game tied 2-2.

With his family watching in the stands at Busch Stadium, Brault also delivered a single at the plate for his first career hit.

Be sure to keep an eye on him at the plate in the future because he is a pretty good hitter compared to most professional pitchers.

Brault did make one rookie mistake. He forgot his glove back in Indianapolis when he got called up from Triple-A.

He wound up having to borrow a glove from new teammate Jeff Locke in his big league debut.

Brault reminds some people of Tom Glavine because of his delivery and ability to pound the strike zone with a respectable fastball and complimentary pitches that keep hitters off balance.

The lefty is projected to make his second major league start with the Pirates on Sunday at home against the Chicago Cubs.

Diamondbacks Fend Off Padres 7-5

All-Star Wil Myers. It has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?

The Padres first baseman celebrated the announcement of his first All-Star appearance by promptly tying a career-high with four hits against Arizona Tuesday night.

Myers finished with three singles, a RBI triple, two runs scored and a partridge in a pear tree. Okay, I made the last one up.

Unfortunately, a Padres rally in the 9th inning fell short as Arizona hung on for a 7-5 victory.

Matt Kemp doubled in a run in the 3rd but wound up striking out to end the game with the tying runs on base.

The Padres right fielder was so upset when he swung and missed on a third strike from Brad Ziegler that he snapped his bat as he walked away from home plate.

Second baseman Ryan Schimpf got the late rally started with a solo shot to lead off the 9th.

Travis Jankowski was robbed of a base hit by third baseman Jake Lamb later that inning which would have helped the comeback.

Alexei Ramirez and Myers were able to provide base knocks to extend the game but ultimately the Padres came up short.

Arizona second baseman Jean Segura was just as important to the Diamondback’s offense as Myers was to San Diego. Segura connected for three hits and scored three times while raising his average to .318.

Rickie Weeks, Jr – the brother of injured Padres utility man Jemile Weeks – smashed a key three-run homer to help the Diamondbacks go up 4-2 and take control in the 3rd.

Poway’s Alex Dickerson started in left field to give Melvin Upton Jr a day off and added a RBI double.

Catcher Derek Norris sat out this game after getting dinged on the elbow late in Monday’s win in Arizona. He is expected back in the lineup on Wednesday.

Colin Rea opposes Shelby Miller in the series finale 6:40 p.m.

The Padres then head back to California to open a four-game set at Dodger Stadium Thursday with the All-Star break on the horizon.

Trump Praises Saddam Hussein's Approach to Terrorism

Donald Trump praised former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein Tuesday night, allowing that he was a "really bad guy" but had redeeming qualities when it came to his handling of terrorists, NBC News reported.

Trump lauded the former U.S. adversary for how "well" he killed terrorists, recalling that he "didn't read them the rights, they didn't talk. They were terrorists, over." Now, Trump assessed, "Iraq is Harvard for terrorism. You want to be a terrorist, you go to Iraq."

Hillary Clinton's campaign seized the opportunity to once more paint Trump as unfit for office.

This isn't the first time Trump has cast the brutal dictator in a positive light. Throughout the primaries Trump glossed over Hussein's violent history in favor of what he viewed as a more stable Middle East ruled by Saddam's viciousness.

Surprise Party for Girl Coming Out

$

When a New Jersey teenager summoned the courage to tell her parents she was gay, she never expected what they did next — or the massive social media response that would follow.

Kinsey Ratzman, 17, says her parents directly asked her a few weeks ago if she was gay because they "kind of suspected something was up."

The ensuing conversation was "awkward but sweet," Kinsey, of Mercer County, told NBC 4 New York in a Twitter message.

It gave her the encouragement to come out to her friends over social media.

She wrote on Instagram: "A year ago today I found out that I'd be able to marry the love of my life in my own country... I was a very happy pup. #lovewins (& oh yeah btw I'm gay and this is me coming out yikes)."

Then, last Saturday, Kinsey's parents told her they'd be having an early Fourth of July party. They sent Kinsey to the mall with her cousin, and when the two returned, Kinsey walked into a house covered in rainbows, complete with a rainbow-colored food spread.

Her parents had thrown her a surprise coming-out party.

"I was shocked and so grateful for my family," Kinsey said.

On the grill were rainbow-themed vegetable kebabs, and the table was filled with rainbow pasta and fruit. The family gathered around their backyard table with rainbow cups and plates and rainbow napkins reading "PRIDE."

There was even a cake covered in fruit forming an American flag that revealed rainbow layers when sliced.

Equally gratifying for Kinsey has been the response on social media after she shared the story of her family's surprise party on Twitter.

"It has been amazing," said Kinsey, who will be a senior this fall at a private high school in Pennsylvania. "The best part is seeing how happy the party has made everyone. Especially in light of the Pulse shootings this past pride month, our community needs a little joy and hope and I'm glad to say my family has helped contribute to that."

"I love being a part of such a caring and awesome community," Kinsey said. "People have been sending me so many kind words of encouragement."

Kinsey tweeted: "My DMs are full of people sharing their coming out stories and their future plans for coming out because of my tweet. My heart is so warmed."

FBI’s Clinton Probe Decision

$

A sampling of local reaction to the FBI’s decision not to bring criminal charges against Hillary Clinton reflects intensely polarized points of view – and a growing sense of distaste about the November election.

"I think the FBI made a mistake, I think she did get involved in illegal practices with her emails,” Mira Mesa resident Rodney Sparks told NBC 7 in an interview downtown on Tuesday.

“It’ll hurt her,” Sparks continued. “But as for costing her the election? I’m not sure she would have been elected anyway.”

Webster resident Tammy Blevins said the FBI’s probe tried her patience: "I just kind of think they've done overkill on it. So I think it's time to drop it."

While Donald Trump’s backers are whipping up political fallout over the FBI's finding that Clinton’s email use was "extremely careless", there’s doubt about long-term impact on her poll numbers.

"Hard-core Hillary Clinton supporters aren't going to care,” predicted Poway resident Sergio Garcia. “They haven't cared about Benghazi or anything else that's happened. They're not going to care now."

Chimed in Garcia’s wife, Deborah: "You know, you do have Hillary supporters who believe Hillary is the right person -- maybe because she's a woman. To me? Not that woman."

However the FBI’s decision plays out, the looming ballot-box matchup of history’s most unpopular presumptive Presidential nominees is becoming something of a turn-off across the political spectrum.

“You're going with Hillary because you're scared of Trump; you're going with Trump because you don't like Hillary,” said Clairemont resident Jim Baxter. “You've got two evils -- pick."

Considering that choice for a moment, Blevins offered this: “Neither one of them are too trustworthy, but for the lesser of two evils, I could not go with Trump.”

Charles LaBella, a retired top Justice Department prosecutor and one-time U.S. Attorney in San Diego, says the FBI probe won't be forgotten any time soon.

“This is going to be a political, judgmental issue, which it really was from the beginning,” LaBella told NBC 7. “And it's going to continue to be a festering sore.”

There are still controversies over Clinton's paid speeches to corporate interests and the financial dealings of her family's charitable foundation.

“I think the problem with this particular candidate is that she tends to play a little close to the line," LaBella said.

Homeless Community Shaken By Killer

Many in Ocean Beach's homeless community told NBC 7 on Tuesday, they were disturbed and terrified by news of a suspect hunting and attacking homeless men sleeping alone in the area.

"I sleep outside every single night," said Anthony Ingram. "I couldn't sleep all night last night. Every second, I was waking up at every single person who walked by; I was in fear for my life, completely."

San Diego Police are searching for a single man linked to two murders and a serious injury attack over the holiday weekend.

The unidentified man is linked to the homicide of 53-year-old Angelo De Nardo, whose burned body was found Sunday morning in Bay Park, and another homeless man who died from severe trauma to his upper body in Ocean Beach Monday morning, according to San Diego Police Department. The same suspect also severely injured a man in the Midway area near Greenwood and Kurtz streets.

Thomas Eisel told NBC 7, while the level of violence in the cases was extreme, he witnesses other acts of violence against the homeless nearly every day.

Eisel recounted for NBC 7 seeing a drunk woman beat a homeless man recently because he wouldn't answer questions about searching for a job or why he lives on the street.

"He was confused," Eisel said of the homeless man. "All the sudden, the woman just starts yelling and slapping on him. She became really violent." Eisel said the man did not fight back. "But I saw him scurry away and I found him around the corner. He was crying."

Several people in the Ocean Beach area were searching for their friends, worried one of them may be a victim in the violent killing spree.

"I'm very worried about my friends," said Jesse Eisener, tearing up. "I'm hoping it's not one of them that's dead."

Another woman who lives in a home near the beach searched for a man she recently gave a cell phone and some money.

"Is the victim a tall, thin man, with a beard, who collects cans and sleeps at Robb Field?" Resident Joan McKee asked NBC 7. "I just hope it's not him because he doesn't do any drugs or drink or anything and he works hard. He's just had a lot of misfortune in recent years."

NBC 7 saw a man at Robb Field matching the woman's description and asked him to contact McKee and let her know he's okay, at her request.

Police are asking the public's help in identifying a person of interest in the case, and released surveillance footage of the man from a convenience store near the De Nardo's body. A clerk at the store told NBC 7 he sold the man a gas can, a gallon of gasoline and a lighter about 15 minutes before De Nardo's body was discovered.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the police department at (619)531-2346.

Bravo Sports Corp. in Santa Fe Springs bought Sector 9 in La Jolla on undisclosed terms.

Bravo makes scooters, skateboards, helmets and other sporting goods under about 20 brands. Sector 9 makes skateboards, surfboards, snowboards, gear, and accessories under three brands, and had been owned by Billabong International.

“Sector 9 is one of the most recognizable and innovative skateboard brands on the market today,” said Bravo Chief Executive Leonardo Pais in a statement, adding that the company would be part of Bravo’s specialty products unit.

Private equity firm Transom Capital Group in Los Angeles owns Bravo. Transom investments include small- and middle-market consumer goods companies.

Bravo in December bought helmet manufacturer Pro-Tec from Dye Precision Inc., both based in San Diego. At the time it said it planned to move Pro-Tec workers to an office in San Clemente along with those of motocross apparel maker One Industries Corp., another San Diego company in Transom’s portfolio.

The Orange County Business Journal estimates Bravo’s sales at about $200 million. It had about 110 employees in Santa Fe Springs and 15 in San Clemente prior to this acquisition.

Bravo Sports Corp. was founded in 1965.

Clinton Announces Free College Tuition Plan

Hillary Clinton on Wednesday announced a plan to make in-state public colleges and universities tuition free by 2021 for students from families who make less than $125,000 a year, a modified version of the plan Bernie Sanders pushed during the presidential primaries, NBC News reported.

Sanders made free in-state tuition a key part of his campaign, but Clinton's plan includes an income cap that the Vermont senator did not have.

The plan would start by making in-state colleges and universities free for students from families making $85,000 a year or less. That income threshold would then climb by $10,000 a year until 2021, when in-state schools would then be free to all families who make $125,000 or less.

Clinton also announce a proposal to create a three-month moratorium on student loan payments to all federal borrowers and restoration of year-round Pell Grants, which would help students get funding for summer classes.

Sander applauded Clinton's "very bold initiative" in a tweet.

Dozens of runaway pets frightened by fireworks on the Fourth of July are now waiting for their owners at animal shelters across San Diego, the County Department of Animal Services confirmed.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Animals Services said 59 dogs that ran away from home during Independence Day fireworks had been taken in by the County’s three shelters, and more were expected to arrive.

Dogs are known to get spooked by the loud sound of fireworks. Last year, 67 dogs landed in San Diego County shelters within the first few days after July 4.

Animal Services said only a few of the 59 pooches have been reunited with their owners. The litter includes a shepherd mix that was hit and injured by a car in the 1200 block of Euclid Avenue.

Per standard operating procedure at shelters, if a lost dog doesn’t have identification and isn’t picked up by its owner in three business days, the dog becomes available for adoption.

If the dog does have identification, Animal Services said officers will contact owners. In this case, owners who lost their pets on July 4 have until July 12 to pick up their dog or it will become available for adoption.

The three San Diego County Shelters are located at:

• 5480 Gaines Street; San Diego, CA 92110; Phone: (619) 767-2675
• 2481 Palomar Airport Road; Carlsbad, CA 92011; Phone (619) 767-2675
• 5821 Sweetwater Road; Bonita, CA 91902; Phone (619) 767-2675

Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The shelters are closed Sundays and Mondays.

County Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson said anyone who lost their pet on the Fourth of July can check the Animal Services lost and found website where photos of found animals are posted and updated regularly.

Animal Services recommends dog owners register their pets with Finding Rover, a free facial recognition app used by County Animal Services. Also, Animal Services offers microchipping services for pets from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday across its three facilities. The chips cost $10 each.

Anyone who finds a lost dog should report the incident to Animal Services at (619) 767-2675.

Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison on Wednesday for the murder of his girlfriend, with the judge citing mitigating circumstances in delivering less than the prescribed 15-year minimum punishment, NBC News reported.

Pistorius stood and faced Judge Thokozile Masipa as she announced the sentence in a South African courtroom on Wednesday.

Pistorius was initially convicted of culpable homicide — the equivalent of manslaughter under South African law — for killing law graduate and model Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013.

An appeals court reversed that result last year and found Pistorius guilty of the more serious charge of murder.
