Unfortunately, most children lose critical components of their reading proficiency over the summer months. Many children do not have books in their homes and rely on public book dispensaries. NBC 7 has partnered with the San Diego public libraries to insure children have access to books throughout the summer season.

The NBC 7 Summer Book Drive begins Wednesday, June 15 and continues through June 30th. Anyone can donate books at more than 26 locations across San Diego City public libraries.

The SD Public libraries need books for children from infants to teens. Click here for a list of participating locations.

San Diego Braces for Excessive Heat

Temperatures are expected to skyrocket this weekend and next week as San Diego braces for excessive heat.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says an excessive heat watch will be in effect for parts of San Diego County, including valleys, mountains and deserts, from Sunday morning through next Thursday evening.

Communities that will feel the heat the most include: El Cajon; Santee; La Mesa; Poway; Pine Valley; Julian; Escondido; San Marcos; Lake Arrowhead; Big Bear.

According to the NWS, the heat wave will bring temperatures between 92 to 97 degrees in the mountains, 95 to 105 degrees in local valleys and 105 to 111 degrees in the high desert.

The warm weather could cause heat-related illness, especially in those partaking in strenuous outdoor activity. If you plan on spending time outside, reschedule activities to early morning or evening and wear loose fitting clothing. Also, drink plenty of water.

For a list of Cool Zones in San Diego County where you can go to beat the heat, click here.

Ahead of the heat wave, San Diego beaches began seeing high surf and rip currents Wednesday, expected to linger through Friday, decreasing slowly until then. The NWS says south and southwest-facing beaches could see waves between five and eight feet, while west-facing beaches see sets between three and five feet, with waves up to seven feet.

The NWS advises those visiting local beaches to obey all posted warning signs, be cautious while getting into the water and swim near lifeguard towers.

Chargers Cut Minicamp Short

Conventional thinking would lead one to the conclusion that a football team that is coming off a 4-12 season needs all the practice time it can get. However, as has been his tradition the last few years, Chargers Head Coach Mike McCoy cut minicamp short by one day.

“We told the players yesterday if we had a great two days then we would cancel tomorrow’s workouts so we’ve canceled tomorrow’s workouts,” said McCoy on Wednesday. “It was an outstanding off-season program. They’ve worked extremely hard and done a lot for the organization. I’m very pleased right with where the football team is at today.”

It is difficult to gauge a team when it has not put on pads yet. In June, every team looks good running around in shorts. McCoy, though, feels the energy level has been kicked up compared to 2015 and all the pieces they added (and subtracted) the last six months are on the right track.

“I’m very happy with the off-season program,” said McCoy. “I couldn’t be happier at this point in time. Very pleased with the way the players have worked, whether it’s bringing in the new free agents that we’ve brought in, the way they’ve practiced every day, the veteran leadership, and not always a vocal group but the way they practice, the way they approach every day in the meetings, when they say something everybody listens.”

Some of the younger players had another walkthrough on Wednesday afternoon and the rookies will have to return for another practice on Thursday. After that workout there will be a meeting with a very specific, important message.

“Don’t just throw it all away now in the next X amount of days before we come back to training camp,” said McCoy. “We’re going to take the Surfaces away from them, they’re not bringing them home with them. Now they’re all playing for jobs.”

The “Surfaces” are the tablets given to every player that hold the offensive, defensive and special teams playbooks. Now the young guys will have to rely on the notes they took in meetings to keep the new system they’re learning fresh in their minds.

There was one big scare on the practice field on Wednesday. Running back Danny Woodhead had his ankle rolled over by a defensive lineman. The Chargers say it’s just a sprain and will not hinder him when training camp starts in July.

Ichiro Makes History But Padres Get a Win

0
0

The Padres beat the Marlins 6-3 on Wednesday at Petco Park but in the process we got to see an interesting little bit of history.

Ichiro Suzuki had a pair of hits putting him just 21 shy of 3000 for his Major League Baseball career. It likely won’t take him too long to reach the almost mythical number and guarantee his spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame. But if we take Ichiro’s professional career as a whole? Well, baseball has a brand new hits king.

Adding Ichiro’s hits from the Japanese Pacific League to his total from MLB he now has 4,257 knocks, which would break Pete Rose’s all-time record. Of course it doesn’t really count since Major League Baseball records can only be set in contests in Major League Baseball games.

However, had he played the entirety of his career in the United States it’s entirely possible Ichiro would have legitimately topped Rose.

In seven seasons in the Japanese Pacific League’s Orix Blue Wave (throwing out a pair of short stints when he was a teenager) Ichiro averaged 177 hits a season. Keep in mind he only played about 130 games a year. In his first year with the Mariners, in 2001, he rolled up 242 hits and proceeded to top 200 knocks for the next nine years after that.

So obviously the dramatically better pitching in MLB was not too big for him. In his 16-year Major League Baseball career Ichiro has averaged exactly 200 hits a season. Take a quick look at how that stacks up against a few other decent hitters from history:

Tony Gwynn = 209 hits/year
Derek Jeter = 204 hits/year
Ichiro Suzuki = 200 hits/year
Rod Carew = 200 hits/year
Wade Boggs = 200 hits/year
Pete Rose = 194 hits/year

That’s some awfully elite company to be in. Rose played for 24 years. With his time in Japan this is Ichiro’s 25th professional season. So while we simply cannot crown him the all-time Major League Baseball hits king we can certainly crown him baseball’s International hits king and have a pretty good idea that, had geography been a little different, the American Big Leagues would have a guy on top the all-time hits list that is actually eligible to have a place in Cooperstown.

As for the game, the Padres got a solid start from rookie Luis Perdomo, who gave up three runs in 6.0 innings to get the win. Perdomo is only in the rotation because Andrew Cashner is on the disabled list but looked like he has the makeup of a legitimate big league starter on Wednesday afternoon.

The Friars were down 3-2 in the 5th inning when they strung some hits together. Matt Kemp singled, Yangervis Solarte doubled, Derek Norris singled, and Melvin Upton Jr. singled … all with two outs … to put three runs on the board and put the Padres up for good.

Fernando Rodney worked a scoreless 9th to earn the save but did give up Ichiro’s (historic?) hit. Rodney has 13 saves and still has not allowed an earned run in a Padres uniform.

San Diego starts a 4-game set against the Nationals on Thursday night in the East Village. Erik Johnson gets the start against Tanner Roark. In the long series the only pitcher in the Nats rotation the Friars will not see is San Diego native Stephen Strasburg.

The Orlando LGBT community is pulling together to support the staff of Pulse, who have found themselves without a way to pay bills as the nightclub sits shuttered in the wake of Sunday's bloody rampage, NBC News reports.

Parliament House, a stronghold of the local LGBT scene, is coordinating with other clubs and working with the owners of Pulse to find ways to support the now unemployed staff, among other efforts to help the overall community.

"We're going to be setting up a Pulse bar here Friday, Saturday and Sunday," Parliament House Manager Tim Evanicki said. "We want to make it available for the Pulse bartenders to work in so they have a place to work."

The 41-year-old resort has been collecting funds since the attack, and two other gay clubs in the area, Hammered Lamb and Southern Nights, were holding fundraisers Wednesday evening.

Protecting Your Digital Assets

Like most people Kenneth Steele has a collection of passwords.

"I probably have four different passwords," said Steele. Those accounts include financial and social media sites.

But what would happen if Steele died suddenly, would other people have access to his digital assets?

"Mainly my father and I have shared stuff," said Steele. The two store each other's passwords in case something unexpectedly happens. Steele says he's grateful since his father has suffered from heart problems. But the reality is, everyone should have a back-up plan to share their digital assets.

"Record all their digital information in one spot that they can put in a safe along with all their other important documents," said UBS Financial Services managing director Richard Ina.

It would also be important to share any personal domain names or intellectual property that might reside online.

Ina says in the past, loved ones could inventory assets after a death by tangibly going through personal property. But the digital age has drastically changed the process. Today, it is possible that someone could have banking, financial and other personal information online where no one would be aware of it. Or if they knew about, it would not be able to have access without user names and passwords.

"A lot of things could really go wrong so it is absolutely critical that especially spouses share that information," said Ina.

That means writing down account names and addresses along with access information. That information can then be kept in a safe, a safety deposit box or with a trusted friend or attorney. You should also make loved ones aware of online cloud accounts that could include digital photos.

In today's world when people are estate planning, they need to be aware of their physical and digital assets. That should also include ongoing accounts and bills.

"To make sure that you don't get yourself in financial trouble by missing payments or not finding assets," said Ina.

Driver Slams Through 3 Fences in Oceanside

A speeding car crashed through three fences on Wednesday sending the driver to the hospital with serious injuries, the Oceanside Police Department confirmed.

The accident happened at approximately 4:48 p.m. near the corner of N Santa Fe Avenue and Elsinore Street in Oceanside.

Police say the driver was not impaired in any way but excessive speed may have caused the accident.

He was heading northbound on N Santa Fe Avenue, driving between an estimated 90 to 100 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone, according to police.

He failed to negotiate the gradual turn, causing the car to hop the curb.

The car first crashed through a block wall protecting a housing community, then through an iron fence surrounding the next door neighbor's pool and through a wooden fence dividing two back yards.

It was a dormant fire plug that finally stopped the car.

Homeowner Michael Card told NBC 7 it was like the scene from a movie.

"He wasn't really responsive. He was looking all over and closing his eyes, waking back up. The only thing he did respond to was his age which is 24. Mostly he was kind of in and out," Card said.

Emergency responders had to use the jaws of life to free the driver.

He was flown to Scripps La Jolla Hospital.

Officials say his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

UCSD Researchers Use Drones to Test Building During Earthquake

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake jolted San Diego last week serving as a reminder of the dangers earthquakes present.

On Wednesday, researchers from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) tested the use of drones to help better prepare San Diego during an earthquake.

UCSD researchers flew two drones in and around a building at the shake table in Scripps Ranch.

The building was six-story structure, similar to a residential apartment complex complete with utilities inside.

Along with other cameras, the drones essentially gave the building an X-ray or MRI while it was jolted with magnitude 6.7 quake.

That's the same force that hit Northridge back in 1994, taking down freeways and homes.

Using the drones allowed researchers to map the building before the quake hit and then assess the damage.

They used more than 250 sensors, 40 video cameras, and a GPS system to gather data during the tests.

Researchers hope to use drones one day to create images of bridges and buildings.

“It will help first responders know 'Should I go to this city block or that one?Where’s the most damage that occurred? Where’s the most good I can do,'" explained Professor Falko Kuester, who heads UC San Diego’s Drone Program.

A spokeswoman says results from the three-week program which will include fire testing, could take years to analyze.

Father of Paris Attack Victim Sues

The father of a California college student gunned down during the November terrorist attacks in Paris has filed a lawsuit against Twitter, Facebook and Google, alleging the social media sites have allowed terror groups to use their technology to spread propaganda and recruit members.

Nohemi Gonzalez, 23, of El Monte, was the only American killed in the November shootings that left 130 people dead.

Gonzalez, a senior at Cal State Long Beach majoring in industrial design, was one of 17 students attending Strate College of Design in Paris as part of a semester-abroad program.

She was killed while eating with friends at a popular bistro in Paris called La Belle Equipe.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in federal court in Northern California, alleges the social media sites have allowed the terrorist group ISIS to use their networks to spread extremist propaganda, raise money and attract recruits.

"This material support has been instrumental to the rise of ISIS and has enabled it to carry out numerous terrorist attacks, including the Nov. 13, 2015, attacks in Paris where more than 125 were killed, including Nohemi Gonzalez," according to the lawsuit.

"Without defendants Twitter, Facebook and Google (YouTube), the explosive growth of ISIS over the last few years into the most-feared terrorist group in the world would not have been possible," the lawsuit states.

The suit notes that as of December 2014, ISIS had about 70,000 Twitter accounts, at least 79 of which were "official," and it posted "at least 90 tweets every minute."

"As with Twitter, ISIS has used Google (YouTube) and Facebook in a similar manner," according to the court document. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

There was no immediate response to requests for comment from Twitter, Facebook and Google.

A man was arrested and police said they are not seeking any other suspects in relation to the attack. Weapons, including a gun, were recovered at the scene, but police have not provided a motive.

Eyewitnesses suggested the 41-year-old Labour Party member of the Parliament may have been caught up in a scuffle between two men at the Birstall Library, where Cox was scheduled to hold office hours with constituents.

"The gun went off twice and then she fell between two cars and I came and saw her bleeding on the floor," shop owner Hichem Ben Abdallah told ITV News.

Majority of Brits Want to Leave EU, New Poll Finds

As Britain gears up for a historic referendum next week on the country's membership in the European Union, a new poll shows that public opinion has sharply turned in favor of a "Brexit," according to NBC News.

London's Evening Standard newspaper published an Ipsos MORI poll in its Thursday paper that found 53 percent of Brits want to leave the EU, with 47 percent wanting to remain in the economic and political union.

The British newspaper The Times published a similar poll two days ago with comparable results.

The shift in public opinion toward "Leave" has Prime Minister David Cameron very concerned. The referendum has proven to be very contentious in the British Parliament, with some Conservative MPs speaking out in favor of a "Leave" vote, against Cameron's efforts to keep the country in the EU.

Thousands of Books Collected for Kids' Summer Reading

The San Diego library department and councilmember Lorie Zapf began distributing thousands of books collected since May 1st for the “Read to Succeed” summer initiative.

“So many kids backslide on reading,” Zapf said at Ocean Beach Elementary School. “There’s a lot of distractions going on. They’re really enthusiastic about reading but a lot of these kids are low income. They don’t have books at home and we want to make sure we get some books in the hands of kids so that they can keep up some reading over the summer.”

About 70 percent of inmates and about 85 percent of kids in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate Zapf explained.

“I think early childhood literacy is one of the most important things that we can accomplish,” she said.

“I love reading, too,” Zapf told the third graders at Ocean Beach Elementary Thursday. “I wanted to make sure you guys had some new books to take home over the summer.”

The books will be distributed to local schools and libraries.

Family of AR-15 Creator: Gun Wasn't Meant for Civilians

The family of the AR-15's creator said he never used his invention for sport, never kept one in the house and, in fact, never owned one.

"Our father, Eugene Stoner, designed the AR-15 and subsequent M-16 as a military weapon to give our soldiers an advantage over the AK-47," the Stoner family told NBC News late Wednesday. "He died long before any mass shootings occurred. But, we do think he would have been horrified and sickened as anyone, if not more by these events."

The comments from Stoner's surviving child and adult grandchildren, the first on their family's legacy, could bolster a groundbreaking new lawsuit that argues the weapon is a tool of war, never intended for civilians.

Eugene Stoner would have agreed, his family said.

City Seeks $25.5M Loan for Convention Center Repairs

0
0

The San Diego City Council has approved plans for the city to obtain a state loan of up to $25.5 million for repairs to the San Diego Convention Center, including replacement of the facility’s iconic but fraying Sails Pavilion roof structure.

According to city documents, the city and San Diego Convention Center have submitted joint applications to the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank, to address capital needs previously identified by center operators. Work will be financed through the Infrastructure State Revolving Fund program, geared to funding the projects of public agencies and non-profit corporations.

Planned improvements include approximately $18 million in upgrades to the Sails Pavilion, a key design element at the center since its 1989 opening. Operators plan to remove and replace the entire tensioned roof structure, and also replace the concrete floor, fire cannon, roof-top chiller and other elements.

Center upgrades will also include escalator modernizations ($3.7 million), cooling tower replacements ($1.6 million) and replacement of the existing fire alarm system in the center’s western building ($1.9 million).

The ordinance approved by the City Council authorizes the convention center to enter into a loan not exceeding $25.5 million, for a term of up to 25 years, among other parameters.

Convention center operators are in discussions with consultants and city officials on other potential programs to address the center’s long-term maintenance and repair needs, including sponsorships and naming rights for portions of the venue.
