Russian government hackers breached the Democratic National Committee's computer network and accessed to the group's communications and databases, NBC News has confirmed.

The sophisticated Russian group, which has also targeted the White House, the State Department and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, targeted research units within the DNC and had access to all of its communications since at least last summer, including chat and email applications.

The hackers appeared to have specifically targeted the DNC's opposition research unit, which is tasked with compiling unflattering information on Republican opponents, including presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Community on Edge After Violent Attack in Del Cerro Home

The home invasion, sex assault and murder in a Del Cerro home leaves a neighborhood on edge.

Mill Peak neighbors woke to screams and banging on the windows just before midnight on Sunday.

Nieghbor Chris Wong called 911.

“No matter what, he was going to get in. It was like an alarm wasn't going to stop him. He was going to get in. I am pretty sure it was a highly severe mental illness case or drugs,” Wong said.

Police say 20-year old suspect Eduardo Jose Torres broke through the sliding glass doors in the back of the house.

Once inside, Torres alleged sexually assaulted a 50-year old woman and stabbed her in the chest. Police say the suspect also stabbed a 74-year old woman who was also in the house.

She died of her injuries.

It was an emotional encounter between police, grief counselors and the 74-year old woman's grandson.

The grandson said the suspect was not known to the family.

While one woman is at Sharp Memorial Hospital recovering, he said he is struggling to find the right words to tell the rest of the family that his grandmother was murdered in this same attack.

The savagery of the attack is taking its toll on the sense of security in the neighborhood.

Wong has six children.

“We're buying an English mastiff. I'm getting registered to buy a shot gun. We are getting our security system upgraded again; we're doing everything now,” Wong said.

Neighbors say yard thefts and break-ins of late can be traced back to visitors to Adobe Falls, situated at the end of their street. Residents say the popular canyon hangout attracts unwanted alcohol and drug activity.

So far, police have not connected that to this case.

The trespassing and vandalism issues in and around Adobe Falls has captured the attention of Councilmember Scott Sherman.

A spokesperson says Sherman intends to meet with SDSU, which owns the property, about securing the area.

EgyptAir Crash Black Boxes Will Stop Working:Officials

The "black boxes" from an EgyptAir jet that crashed in the Mediterranean Sea last month are expected to stop emitting signals on June 24, investigators said.

The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) likely hold vital information about what caused Flight MS804 to crash on May 19, killing all 66 people on board, NBC News reported.

The task of recovering the devices from the sea floor would be much harder without the battery-powered "pings" indicating their location. Egyptian investigators are also working with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board because the Airbus' engines were built by a consortium that includes Connecticut-based Pratt & Whitney.

On Monday the NTSB said it received Egyptian military radar images confirming that the aircraft deviated from its planned course and turned a full circle before disappearing on route from Paris to Cairo.

Dold Pushes for Gun Control

Illinois Rep. Robert Dold broke with fellow Republican lawmakers Tuesday, calling for expanded gun control legislation in the wake of Sunday’s massacre at an Orlando nightclub.

“Thoughts and prayers are not enough and it’s time for action,” Dold said in response to the attack.

“The hateful terrorist attack targeting America’s LGBT community in Orlando is another reminder of the pressing need to come together and work across party lines to root out terrorism, prevent gun violence and put an end to bigotry of all kinds,” Dold said Tuesday. “An attack on one American is an attack on all of us.”

Dold joined Democratic lawmakers Tuesday, pushing lawmakers to take votes on bills that would prevent terror suspects from buying guns or explosives, require universal background checks for gun purchases and bolster the system for background checks.

Additionally, Dold introduced legislation last year with Rep. Debbie Dingell that would prevent people who have abused their partners from buying or owning guns, expanding prohibitive measures on people convicted of spousal abuse. Dold also pushed this measure Tuesday.

"We cannot allow partisanship to define this debate,” the congressman added.

During the speech, Dold claimed these were “common-sense proposals” for gun control that wouldn’t impede on Americans’ Second Amendment rights to bear arms.

“There is no quick and easy solution to all the problems underscored by the Orlando terrorist attack, but if we are able to set aside partisan differences and unite in the best interest of our nation, we can make serious strides in the ongoing efforts to keep Americans safe and prevent future atrocities,” Dold concluded.

In the wake of the shooting, House and Senate Democrats are pushing for increased gun control measures.

Democratic lawmakers erupted on the House floor Monday, criticizing House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans for not addressing the nation's gun laws, NBC New York reported.

Following a moment of silence for victims of the shooting, some Democrats yelled "where's the bill?" and "no leadership."

Omar Mateen opened fire early Sunday morning at Pulse Orlando, a popular gay dance club, killing 49 people and leaving 53 more wounded, police said. Mateen pledged allegiance to ISIS during the attack. The shooting is being called the worst in the country’s history.

Dold, who is facing a tough bid for re-election against Brad Schneider in November, has held moderate positions on gun control in the past, including the legislation proposed alongside Dingell.

Schneider served as the representative for Illinois' 10th Congressional district from 2013 to 2015 before being ousted from office by Dold in the 2014 election. Schneider defeated Dold in the 2012 general election to win the seat.

San Diegans Gather for Vigil in Hillcrest

Thousands of San Diegans gathered in the heart of Hillcrest on Monday to remember and honor the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida.

People spilled into the streets outside of the San Diego LGBT Community Center during the vigil.

It was a night of singing, hugging, and thinking about a tragedy which, for this community, hits particularly close to home.

“I think no matter what, I think it’s going to be a special night, it’s going to be an amazing. Our community’s going to come together. There’s a lot of people mourning the losses and people still struggling so it’s an opportunity for everyone to come together and mourn together,” Ian Johnson, Director of Events at the San Diego LGBT Center said.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Chief Shelley Zimmerman and other city officials were also present.

Mayor Faulconer addressed the crowd inside the center and said that hate will not win.

“We stand with Orlando, ladies and gentlemen; we will continue to stand with pride,” he said.

About 1500 people RSVP’d to the event on Facebook for what is being considered as the largest “Orlando Strong” event in San Diego.

“You can’t help but just be proud for what we are, how far we’ve come, and I’ve only been ‘out’ for 2 years and my family and friends have supported us,” said Sean O’Conner, a vigil attendee.

SDPD shut down a portion of University Avenue for more than an hour to accommodate the crowd spilling onto the streets.

People marched to the LGBT flag in the center of Hillcrest where a memorial had been set up.

Someone released monarch butterflies as the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus sang in honor those who lost their lives.

In an emotional conclusion to the vigil, the names of all 49 victims were read out at Rich's, a popular gay nightclub in Hillcrest.

“It could’ve been any of us, at any place, at any time, and that’s the worst part,”  said O'Conner.

The FBI is investigating whether gunman Omar Mateen visited Pulse nightclub and tried to communicate with some of its patrons on a gay dating app before killing 49 people and injuring scores at the Orlando club, authorities told NBC News.

Cord Cedeno, a customer at the club, told MSNBC on Monday that Mateen tried to get in contact with him through Grindr, a dating application for gay and bisexual men. Cedeno said he blocked Mateen "because he was creepy" and "recognized him off Grindr" after the rampage.

"That's not his first time there," Cedeno said. "He's been there several times. I know that for a fact."

An FBI official told NBC News that investigators are looking into similar reports.

A 36-year old San Diego man had died of the flu, bringing the number of flu-related deaths to 67 this season, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.

The man died on June 9 from complications of influenza B. He had been healthy and had not traveled out of the San Diego area prior to falling ill.

Influenza A H1N1 is the most common strain of the flu in the San Diego region but influenza A H3N2 and influenza B viruses are also present.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine every year. Vaccines are highly recommended for people who have chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and lung disease. Pregnant woman and anyone 65 years or older is also advised to get the shot when it becomes available every year.

You can get vaccines at retail pharmacies or local community health centers. You can find a list of locations here.

Big Rig Wreck Dangles off SR-94

As an 18-wheeler that crashed off State Route 94 dangled off the freeway early Tuesday morning, authorities shut down a busy on-ramp, slowing the morning commute.

According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials, the driver of a big rig lost control just before 1 a.m. and slammed into a guardrail at the eastbound SR-94 on-ramp at southbound Interstate 15.

The big rig veered off the freeway and traveled partially down an embankment, half of the semi hanging off the roadway.

Officials shut down the on-ramp off 32nd Street to eastbound SR-94, as well as the 30th Street on-ramp. The accident also shut down the westbound and eastbound SR-94 transitions to southbound I-15.

Caltrans crews arrived at the scene just before 4:30 a.m. and planned use heavy-duty equipment to pull the semi-truck up from the embankment. Ramp closures were expected to be lifted shortly thereafter.

Investigators said the driver of the big rig was not injured. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Officers Want to Adopt Puppies They Helped Rescue

Three puppies found shivering and alone in a Southern California park may end up with the police officers who helped rescue them.

Escondio Police Officers Nathan Visconti, Christopher Dare and Jose Guerrero were called to Kit Carson Park Monday at 6 a.m. for the final call on their overnight shift.

A woman running through the park stumbled on the eight-week-old lab mix puppies. The pups were barely bundled in a coat on the grass.

Tracy Plowy left the pups to call for help, and by the time she came back, she said "three policemen (were) holding each of the puppies."

"They were cold and scared," Visconti said as he described how he picked up one of the puppies and cradled it.

“Immediately, as soon as I saw those three puppies, before they even had a chance, I picked mine,” said Officer Guerrero. "I told them it's game over."

The puppies had probably been at the park all night before they found them, the officers said.

“We're like 'Where’s Jose and the third puppy','" Visconti said. "And we look over and he’s holding it up and he was singing to it."

As excited as he may have been, Guerrero denies there was any singing involved.

"I will admit the dog was being held up like baby Simba," he said.

Dare says it was like Christmas morning and an experience that they didn’t want to come to an end.

“We were sitting on a curb playing with puppies. That’s not an ending you see very often,” he said.

At the same time Escondido Police were called, the San Diego Humane Society were told about the pups in the park.

The officers said they are interested in giving the puppies a home but they still have to get their loved ones on board with the plan.

"Mixed results," Visconti said. "We're working on it."

They've each chosen the name "Leo." There's apparently some debate over which officer chose the name first.

The puppies will be on hold at the San Diego Humane Society for the rest of the week while they receive medical exams.

6 Proposals for Seaport Village Site

The Unified Port of San Diego has released six proposals for developments targeting 70 acres of prime downtown San Diego waterfront property, including the current site of the iconic Seaport Village.

Port officials have scheduled a public open house for June 13 and 14, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the San Diego Convention Center, to display and discuss the proposals. They include:

-- Plans by a locally based group known as Protea Waterfront Development for a project including hotels and retail; a ride called The Spire; an aquarium; and a museum with virtual-reality features from the media and business arm of the Smithsonian Institution. Estimated cost is $1 billion.

-- A proposal by a group that includes San Diego’s Manchester Financial Group and Dealy Development for a hotel, performing arts hall, retail and offices, and a gondola ride called San Diego Spinnaker. Estimated cost is $700 million.

-- San Diego-based OliverMcMillan’s plans including three hotels; a sports and entertainment venue; retail and restaurants; office space; a Scripps Institution of Oceanography learning center; and a performance space for San Diego Symphony. Estimated cost is $1.4 billion.

-- A proposal by Seattle-based Great Western Pacific and Santa Monica Seafood for Tuna Harbor Pavilion, including a Ferris wheel on a fishing pier, a fly-over ride called “Wings over the Pacific Coast,” a maritime history-themed ride, and a multi-concept restaurant and retail pavilion. Estimated cost is $130 million.

-- Orlando-based Ripley Entertainment’s proposed Ripley’s Aquarium of California, with live marine animal exhibits and a rooftop event space. Estimated cost is $150 million.

-- Plans by Denver-based McWhinney and DJM Capital Partners for three hotels, maritime-related offices, retail and restaurants, a cultural performance venue, a fitness club, wave-making pool and recreational marina. Estimated cost was not immediately available.

A Port of San Diego statement said the district will be accepting comments on the proposals through June 28, with more information at portofsandiego.org.

May 2 was the deadline for developers to submit proposals, and port district staff anticipates formally presenting recommendations to commissioners in August. The port district has not committed to a formal timeline for project selection, construction and opening of new elements.

Seaport Village opened in 1980, and the port district last year rejected a proposal by current operators to redevelop the property, as officials seek to maximize revenue generated by prime waterfront spaces. The current lease on the Central Embarcadero waterfront site expires in September 2018.

A vehicle collision sparked a brush fire and closed Wildcat Canyon Road near Lakeside Tuesday.

The rollover accident occurred at 6:04 a.m. north of Willow Road.

California Highway Patrol officers say the investigation is in its early stages but it appears one driver may have tried passing another.

Powerlines were down and sparked several spot fires in the vegetation, officials said. Heartland and Lakeside firefirefighters said the fires were quickly extinguished.

Each driver suffered moderate injuries, officials said, and was transported to Sharp Memorial.

Both victims were trapped and had to be pulled from the cars, firefighters said.

A Sig Alert has been issued. Wildcat Canyon Road was closed in both directions.

San Diego Gas & Electric crews will work throughout the day to replace a power pole knocked down in the collision.

SD Men Operated Major Commercial Sex Ring: PD

Two San Diego men have been arrested and accused of operating two separate criminal commercial sex enterprises to lure women into prostitution with offers of drugs and money, San Diego police said Tuesday.

Dale Vinzant, 68, accused of operating San Diego Adult Service Provider, was arrested on Friday in the Mission Bay area. Codefendant, Christian Koalani, 66, the owner of American Escort Company, was arrested in Pacific Beach on Thursday.

Police said the two men have been investigated by the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force for a year. The men’s enterprises are separate, but they are “known to each other,” San Diego police said.

Vinzant’s enterprise was an internet meeting place allowing customers and prostitutes a venue to link up and negotiate a sex transaction. The customers could then write and post a review on the site, police said.

Police said in a news release Koalani would use that internet meeting place to advertise his own escort service “and ultimately profit from the sex acts provided by the young women he recruited and directed.”

Koalani has also written a book called “Story of an American Escort,” which police said chronicled his sex trade.

Authorities have served a series of search warrants over the past several days and seized evidence on computers and other electronic media.

Orlando gunman Omar Mateen's wife, Noor Salman, has told the FBI that she drove Mateen to the Pulse nightclub on a prior occasion but that she tried to talk him out of the attack, officials told NBC News.

Several officials familiar with what she has told the FBI said she was with him when he bought ammunition and a holster. She also once drove him to the nightclub because he wanted to see it in advance, the officials said.

Mateen shot and killed 49 people at the club and injured another 53.

Law enforcement officials said authorities are considering filing criminal charges against Salman for failing to tell them what she knew before the attack, but no decision has been made.

Several officials said she is cooperating with the investigation.

Suspect Dead, Officer Hurt in OIS, Shelter in Place Issued

One suspect has died and an officer has been taken to the hospital following some kind of violent struggle that lead to an officer-involved shooting in Chula Vista's Eastlake neighborhood, Chula Vista Police (CVPD) Captain Lon Turner said.

Police are searching for additional suspect(s) in the incident, which unfolded at approximately 2:10 p.m. Tuesday near Proctor Valley Road and McKenzie Creek. The location is east of State Route 125.

Residents and businesses in the area are asked to shelter-in-place as authorities work. Officials will give an all-clear when it is safe for residents to leave their homes.

Turner said the incident began when at least one suspect initiated a violent struggle with a local plainclothes officer. Investigators say the officer is a member of a combined federal and local task force working the area.

The officer engaged four suspects in two separate cars in front of the now-closed Albertson's grocery store.

The officer pulled his weapon and fired, hitting one suspect. Turner confirmed a suspect was hit by a bullet and taken to the hospital. An officer was also taken to a local hospital. Both suffered unknown injuries.

The suspects did not shoot at the officer.

Both cars involved fled the scene. A white Toyota was found at the Sedona Condominium complex where it crashed. Just around the corner, two suspects in that car were arrested.

Police are looking for two more suspects in a red Trailblazer or red Dodge. The search area is focused around the southern part of Chula Vista, officials said. Officials do not have any descriptions of the suspects as of 4 p.m.

An alert sent out by CVPD said officials are searching the 2300 block of Proctor Valley Road in Chula Vista. Residents are being asked to avoid the area.

The Department of Homeland Security and local police agencies are on scene investigating.

According to the South Bay YMCA, the Eastlake facility on Boswell Road is on lockdown and staff are are not allowing anyone in. The gymnastics facility at the corner of Boswell and Lane Avenue is also on lockdown. The Kinder Care in the area is also locked down.

A line of patrol cars were along Lane Avenue near Boswell Road. The U.S. Border Patrol San Diego Headquarters is located at that intersection along with the Eastlake YMCA Gymnastics and Basketball center.

Officers carrying weapons were searching the parking lot of the UPS Center at the end of Boswell Road.

At least one suspect is considered outstanding, police said.

Border Patrol (BP) units, including a helicopter, are assisting Chula Vista Police in the search, BP Public Affairs confirmed to NBC 7 San Diego. They said could not disclose further information.

No other information was immediately available.

Local Team Hopes for Second Chance on NBC Spartan Show

$
0
0

In the new NBC show “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge” participants push through the most difficult obstacle course race ever designed for a shot at $250,000.

They must push through what’s been labeled the “murderous mile” as they crawl under barbed wire through thick mud, climb, swim, run and jump through obstacles that seem impossible to overcome all for a chance at glory.

But is all that money worth putting yourself through these physically demanding conditions?

For those involved in the obstacle course racing community here in San Diego the answer is always “yes!”

The obstacle course race or OCR phenomenon has been around for years, but with the growing trend of boot camp style workouts, more and more people, from all walks of life are jumping in on the sport.

So how do you prepare for an OCR?

Trainers like Dan Hark and Hannibal Smith of NXPT Fitness in Kearny Mesa hold OCR boot camp classes on the beach to help gym members prepare for upcoming races.

“It’s all about pushing yourself to the next level” says Hark. “We always tell our members their minds will quit before their bodies will. They just have to keep pushing.”

In Oceanside, MROC (Mud Run Obstacle Course) Training facility is designed exclusively for OCR training. Owner Mike Cofner and his team, which includes his wife Krista, were cast on Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge. Unfortunately, because of unforeseen circumstances, they were unable to participate this season.

Once you meet them it’s easy to see why they were selected. They know it takes much more than physical ability to be a Spartan; it’s all about resilience and being strong as a team.

DeeAnn Smith is also on Confer’s Spartan team. The all-American triathlete is also a marathon runner and elite OCR racer. She faces the race course with determination and relentless drive. When you compare those obstacles to what she’s already conquered, there is no comparison.

Smith fought and beat breast cancer and then pushed to get her life back. She went on to dominate in the OCR community, and motivate those she met along the way.

“She’s been through so much in her life and she’s not satisfied with that. She wants more and she always pushes herself,” says Confer of his friend and teammate.

The final member of the MRCO team is local pro golfer Brian Smith. Yes, a Spartan Golfer. Walker says his first love is golf but “there’s something about a Spartan race that just gets me going.”

Even though things didn’t work out this season, Confer and the MROC squad are always ready to compete and hope they get the call next season, even with a mini Spartan on the way for Confer and his wife.

Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC.

A father of four killed in a rollover crash in Borrego Springs on Saturday was identified.

Raul Cadena, 49, was the front seat passenger of an SUV that was part of a caravan line of San Diego-based Boy Scout Troop 59. The troop was heading to Borrego Springs for a bicycling event.

According to Cal Fire and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials, the driver of the SUV lost control and slammed into a tree in a ditch in the northbound lane of State Route 79 near Santa Ysabel in unincorporated San Diego County.

Cadena was pulled from the vehicle but died on the scene from his injuries.

According to officials, Cadena’s son was in another vehicle in that caravan line but was unhurt.

Two Boy Scouts, both 13 years old, had been riding in the back of the SUV and were also injured. They were flown to Rady Children’s Hospital.

The driver of the SUV, a 52-year old man, and his wife, 42, were taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. They are also the parents of one of the teens injured in the crash.

Their conditions are unknown.
