Chargers Lock Up Allen

$

The 2016 season is going to be the final year of Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen’s rookie contract. The good news for Bolts fans is it will not be his final year in a San Diego uniform.

Allen and the Chargers have agreed to a 4-year contract extension that will run through the 2020 season. The deal is reportedly worth an average of $11 million a year. It is unknown how much money is guaranteed.

For the first half of the 2015 NFL season Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen was borderline unstoppable. He has 67 catches for 725 yards and four touchdowns in less than eight games but Allen’s season was cut short by an injury on a touchdown grab against the Ravens on November 1 in Baltimore. He has been participating in Organized Team Activities and says the lacerated kidney he suffered is fully healed.

Allen was a 3rd round pick of the Chargers in 2013 and was arguably the best rookie in the NFL, rolling up 1,046 receiving yards with eight touchdown catches.

In 2014 Allen was a known commodity and opposing defensive coordinators started game-planning to shut him down and his numbers dropped. Allen had just 783 yards and four scores as a sophomore and admitted he needed to change the way he prepared for playing football.

Keenan made dietary alterations and doubled his efforts and the results were immediate. He was on a pace to challenge the NFL’s record for receptions in a season before the injury. If he stays healthy his quarterback is among the guys who think Allen can be one of the best wideouts in the game.

“Everything comes easy for him,” said Philip Rivers. “He doesn’t need to study. All the stuff, I tell him one time and I never have to tell him again. Two years ago I think he realized; Wait a minute, the corners in the league are going to be following me around? I’m not just going to line up and get the right corner or the left corner. It’s going to take an even added commitment to do it. Not that he was slacking, but I think he’s figuring that out.”

Allen will have Rivers throwing him the ball for at least three more years, and now he has the defense stretching ability of Travis Benjamin on the other side of the field and Offensive Coordinator Ken Whisenhunt back calling plays (Coach Whis was the coordinator for Allen’s rookie year).

All those factors together could mean another record-setting season, only this time one he’ll actually get to finish.

Mysterious Sewage Smell in Pacific Beach

Neighbors near Morrell Street and Oliver Avenue told NBC 7 it smells like rotten eggs, sulfur and sometimes as bad as a decomposing animal.

Their area is located right above a sewage line. They said city crews believe the smell is bad sewage odor (BSO), but the mystery remains.

Where is it leaking from?

“We can’t open our son’s bedroom window,” said Jeffrey Montez. “We don’t know if it’s toxic. We don’t know the long-term effects of being exposed to BSO.”

He and his wife Kristen moved into their home a few months ago. For Kristen, the issue is becoming emotional.

“It’s our home, you know?” she said. “You want to raise your family here. It’s our home.”

The Montez family said city crews are working to solve the problem. Workers have been out several times to check the area and fill manholes with asphalt and silicone.

However, they said, it doesn’t appear to be working. The smell remains.

Recently, the couple held a community meeting and learned they’re not alone. Others nearby notice the stench, and some have dealt with it for a long time.

“They say they’ve been dealing with this for years, and it seems as if they’ve lost hope,” Kristen said.

Kristen remains optimistic that, together, neighbors and the City will find the leak and stop the smell.

She said workers plan to come out again Monday.

NBC 7 reached out to city officials Friday afternoon and was told more information would be provided Monday.

To report a BSO, call City of San Diego Sewer Dispatch at 619-527-7660.

A driver who plowed into a traffic signal in Oceanside – shearing the pole at its base – was killed in the crash early Saturday morning, authorities confirmed.

At around 1:50 a.m., officers with the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) were called to a rollover crash on State Route 76 and North Coast Highway.

According to investigators, a driver in a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer was traveling westbound on SR-76 when he failed to negotiate the curve in the road, striking the raised cement center median.

The driver went across the median and then hit two wooden posts. As the vehicle rolled, the driver struck a traffic signal pole on the southeast corner of North Coast Highway, shearing the pole off the ground.

Police said the driver was pinned inside the wreckage and died at the scene. His name was not immediately released. No one else was hurt in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing and police are trying to determine if alcohol, drugs or speed played a role in the deadly crash.

The streets were closed for several hours as police collected evidence and cleared debris left over from the wreckage.

Armed Man Hits 3 Businesses on Robbery Spree

An unknown man armed with a gun went on a robbery spree overnight, targeting three businesses across different San Diego communities, according to police.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said the suspect’s spree began just after midnight at a 7-Eleven in North Park, in the 3100 block of University Avenue.

There, the man pointed a black handgun at a clerk and demanded money from her. After getting some cash, he fled on foot and was last seen running eastbound on University Avenue.

About an hour later, police said the suspect made his way to Kearny Mesa, where he robbed a clerk at gunpoint at a Chevron gas station in the 8100 block of Balboa Avenue. Police said the man pulled a gun from his waistband and demanded money.

When the clerk refused to give him cash, the suspect demanded cigarettes and then ran away from the mini-mart.

But the spree wasn’t over just yet.

Police said the man hit a third business just a few minutes later – at around 1:25 a.m. – this time, an Humberto’s Taco Shop in the 1100 block of South 43rd Street in Southcrest.

Carrying a black handgun, the suspect approached an employee at the cash register and demanded money. As the employee opened the register to hand over the cash, police said the suspect reached into the drawer himself and took out more bills.

At that moment, he also pointed his gun at the taco shop employee, police said. Cash in hand, he then ran out of the eatery towards an alley on South 43rd Street.

In all three robberies, police said the suspect was described as a heavy-set Hispanic man, possibly in his 30s, standing at approximately 5-foot-4.

Witnesses told police he had a short, military-style haircut and was unshaven. He wore a dark hooded sweatshirt with “Dodgers” scrolled across the front, black or blue shorts, white knee-high socks and black shoes with white soles.

No one was injured in the robbery spree. The investigation is ongoing.

Dad Dies in Boy Scout Caravan Crash

A San Diego-based Boy Scout troop on their way to Borrego Springs was involved in a deadly rollover crash near Lake Henshaw north of San Diego County Saturday.

According to Cal Fire and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials, at 9:13 a.m., the driver of a Ford Expedition lost control of the SUV and slammed into a tree in a ditch in the northbound lane of State Route 79, about a half-mile south of State Route 76 near Santa Ysabel in unincorporated San Diego County.

The driver’s SUV was carrying four passengers, including a 49-year-old San Diego man who was sitting in the front passenger seat. Officials said that man was killed in the collision.

The passenger was the father of a Boy Scout also on the trip to Borrego Springs. Officials said the Ford Expedition was one of many vehicles in a caravan line as the Boy Scout troop headed to Borrego Springs for a bicycling event.

Officials told NBC 7 the victim’s son was in another vehicle in that caravan line when his father was killed in the tragic crash.

According to investigators, two Boy Scouts – both 13 years old – were also hurt in the collision. The teens had been riding in the back of the Expedition when the vehicle rolled off the road. The teenagers were taken by medical helicopter to Rady Children’s Hospital.

They survived with the worst injuries, officials told NBC 7.

The 52-year-old driver of the SUV and his 42-year-old wife were taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. They are also the parents of one of the teens injured in the crash.

When NBC 7 arrived at the scene of the accident, two portions of unraveled tire were on the ground with skid marks 200 feet before the crash site. The back rear tire of the Expedition, with detached tread, was completely off the axle.

CHP Officer Rob Tracy said investigators are looking at the tire as a possible cause of the crash but haven’t come to a final conclusion.

Tracy said motorists who passed the deadly crash stopped to perform CPR on the father who ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The entire Boy Scout troop, including the man’s son, stopped at the scene. Tracy applauded the Boy Scout leadership for how they handled the tragedy.

As of 1:40 p.m., the conditions of the survivors were unknown.

Lake Henshaw is located at the southeast base of Palomar Mountain, about 65 miles northeast of downtown San Diego, and approximately 34 miles northeast of Escondido. It's a popular reservoir for camping and boating.

Student Gets Surprise Visit From Marine Dad at Graduation

A Rancho Bernardo High School senior got a heartwarming surprise at her graduation in San Diego on Thursday.

Camille Morris was reunited with her father, Master Sergeant Derrick D. Morris of the United States Marine Corp in a surprise visit during graduation.

Camille said goodbye to her father last year when he was deployed overseas. When she found out he couldn't make it to her high school graduation, she was disappointed.

Rancho Bernardo High School Principal David LeMaster asked Camille to join him during his graduation speech. He recalled meeting Camille and learning that her father was serving overseas.

LeMaster contacted Morris to plan the surprise — which Morris said, was nine months in the making.

Morris served in Iraq, Kosovo, and is currently deployed to Kuwait in support of Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) referred to as Operation Inherent Resolve.

He flew in Tuesday night, but no one from his family knew he was back. He said he knew it would be an emotional reunion — and he was right.

Eyes full of tears, Camille rushed to her father during the ceremony.

“It was well worth,” Morris said, speaking of the moment he hugged his daughter. “I’m a very proud father, very proud.”

Morris said up until the reunion, he had only been in contact with his family through text messages and emails.

“Text messages only say words but it doesn’t have feelings. It’s not like you’re there, you can hold them, kiss them, touch them every night,” he said.

Morris said he put a whole year’s worth of emotions into the hug he gave Camille on Thursday.

“If I had to rank one of the best feelings of my life, this would rank very high. Best moment in my life is being a proud dad and being able to make it all the way back to San Diego to see my daughter graduate,” he said.

Morris is currently on leave.

Emily Stone’s commencement ceremony Saturday was made a little more special because she didn’t know if she would be there.

“For the first 55 days in the hospital going through intensive chemo, the only thing I thought about was surviving,” Stone said of her struggle with cancer.

Stone, along with thousands of other students, graduated from National University in a huge ceremony at Petco Park.

Right before Stone finished the nursing program at National University she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

“I started realizing I worked so hard for this degree, I need to just finish it out,” she told NBC 7.

Stone, a military spouse with two young children, had strong support from both her family and classmates.

“My husband made it possible for me to get my books and set up a study area for me,” she explained. “I was able to finish my degree from my hospital bed, my clinical hours were virtual.”

The graduate, who just found out she is officially a registered nurse, is now in remission.

“Here I am today, my hair is growing out, I'm healthy.”

She said on her graduation day she was thinking of her children.

“It’s a positive image for them to see all of us go through trial and tribulation and to come out with a degree and come out on the other side of it successful,” she said.

Summer Movies in the Park continues this weekend by showing Minions, The Good Dinosaur and Finding Nemo at five different locations across the county.

Kicked off at the end of May, the series continues every Friday and Saturday night until Labor Day.

More than 100 movies will be shown at dozens of parks around San Diego, including the USS Midway Museum, Pine Valley County Park, Tecolote Park, Woodland Park, La Mesa Pool, Carmel Valley Recreation Center among many others.

The movies are free and start at dusk – about 15 minutes after sunset.

The Summer Movies in the Park series began in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative, giving local residents a reason to visit their local county and city parks and discouraging criminal activity in the park.

Some of the many movies being shown this summer include Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mary Poppins, Kung Fu Panda 3, Hotel Transylvania 2, The Truman Show and The Peanuts Movie.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy games and activities before the movie starts, and to bring a chair, blankets and jackets. Food will be sold by vendors or a food truck onsite.

The series is a collaborative effort between the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation, the Cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, El Cajon, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, National City, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Vista, USS Midway Museum and the Port of San Diego.

A schedule for all the movies can be found here.

CAL FIRE Suspends Residential Burning Permits

Starting Monday, CAL FIRE is suspending all burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Area of San Diego and Imperial Counties.

The suspension bans all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris like branches and leaves.

“San Diego lives with the threat of wildfire year round and it is critical that the public do their part to be extra fire safe when outdoors” said Tony Mecham CAL FIRE San Diego Unit and County Fire Chief.

Firefighters have already responded to more than 1,700 wildfires that have burned nearly 30,000 acres since January.

“As conditions across California are drying out further we must take every step to prevent new wildfires from sparking,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. “Residents must ensure they have Defensible Space by removing dead trees and overgrown vegetation from around their homes, but do so safely.”

The suspension of burn permits for residential landscape debris does not apply to campfires within organized campgrounds or on private property. Campfires may be permitted if the campfire is maintained in such a manner as to prevent its spread to the wildland. A campfire permit can be obtained at local fire stations and online at PreventWildfireCA's website

Well-wishers from around the world are sending messages of love and support to the city of Orlando, Florida, where at least 50 people were killed and dozens more wounded in a shooting early Sunday morning at a nightclub.

President Barack Obama ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Thursday in honor of the victims, calling it "an especially heartbreaking day" for the LGBT community.

"Say a prayer for them, say a prayer for their families. May God give them the strength to bear the unbearable," he said.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott, both presumptive presidential nominees, both Florida senators and many more elected officials and advocates have spoken or released statements about the shooting, the deadliest in U.S. history.

Americans from all over the country spoke up as well, expressing their solidarity on social media and by donating money or blood.

The news reached the owner of Pulse, the nightclub shuttered in the deadly attack.

"Like everyone in the country, I am devastated about the horrific events that have taken place today. Pulse, and the men and women who work there, have been my family for nearly 15 years. From the beginning, Pulse has served as a place of love and acceptance for the LGBTQ community. I want to express my profound sadness and condolences to all who have lost loved ones. Please know that my grief and heart are with you," Barbara Poma said in a statement.

Statements from national figures
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, families and all those affected by this horrific tragedy. We are a strong and resilient state and we will devote every resource available to assist with the shooting in Orlando," Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement.

"Woke up to hear the devastating news from FL. As we wait for more information, my thoughts are with those affected by this horrific act," Hillary Clinton tweeted.

"Horrific incident in FL. Praying for all the victims & their families. When will this stop? When will we get tough, smart & vigilant?" Donald Trump said on Twitter.

"It's horrific, it's unthinkable. And just hopes go out to all those who were shot that they can recover," Bernie Sanders, Democratic presidential candidate, said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani tweeted: Severely condemn the heinous & unforgivable crime in Orlando. It was a coward act of terror. Praying for all those affected by this tragedy."

The Vatican said Pope Francis expressed "the deepest feelings of horror and condemnation."

"I stand with the City of Orlando against hate and bigotry. My thoughts are with all the victims of this horrific attack #lovewins," tweeted London's newly-elected mayor, Sadiq Khan.

Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement that "the violence is not normal, and the targeting of our lesbian, gay bisexual, and transgender Americans is evil and abhorrent."

In a statement, French President Francois Hollande "condemns with horror" the mass killing in Florida and "expresses the full support of France and the French with America's authorities and its people in this difficult time."

Hundreds of people have written into the Facebook page of the club, called Pulse, in downtown Orlando. Many replied to two posts the club put online – a brief, frightening message around the time of the shooting saying "Everyone get out of pulse," and another, four hours later, that said it would provide more information when it was available and thanking for the messages that came in.

"Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event. Thank you for your thoughts and love," the club wrote around 6 a.m.

Equality Florida, the state's largest civil rights organization for the LGBT community, said in a statement Sunday it was "reeling from the tragic news."

"We are heartbroken and angry that senseless violence has once again destroyed lives in our state and in our country," the organization said.

People from the U.S. and abroad wrote in — the shooting occurred as many were asleep in America — like user Carley Swan, who said "Sending Prayers from Australia, hearing this down here."

"Woke up in Israel to these terrible news, my 2thoughts and hopes are with everyone there and their families," user Guy Carmeli wrote.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer spoke at a press conference Sunday morning, thanking first responders, hospitals and law enforcement for their work and noting the need to support the victims.

"Tonight we had a crime that will have a lasting effect on our community. We need to stand strong, we need to be supportive of the victims and their families," Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted: "Our prayers are with those injured and killed early this morning in horrifying act of terror in Orlando."

House Speaker Paul Ryan issued a statement after ordering that flags above the Capitol be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims of the Orlando terrorist attack:

"It is horrifying to see so many innocent lives cut short by such cowardice. Tonight, and in the long days ahead, we will grieve with the families. We will thank the heroes. We will hope for a swift recovery for the injured," Ryan said.

"Our security depends on our refusal to back down in the face of terror. We never will."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared his condolences by saying "it is appalling that as many as 50 lives may have been lost to this domestic terror attack."

A 51-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman were were robbed at gunpoint by two suspects inside their own garage Friday night.

The couple arrived at their home in the 500 block of San Antonio Avenue around 11:39 p.m.

The two suspects exited a car parked in front of the couple’s home, entered the garage and demanded property from the couple at gunpoint.

The victims tried to get into their house when they heard a gunshot. After they got inside the man noticed his tooth was chipped and his lip was bleeding. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

It is unclear how much property the couple lost at this time.

The suspects are described as dark-skinned, in their 20’s and both 6 feet tall. They were wearing black masks, white beanies or hoodies pulled up and dark clothing. One of the suspects had a gun.

The suspects' car is a four-door and white or light-colored and was driven by a third suspect.

San Diego police robbery detectives are investigating.

Boyfriend a ‘Person of Interest’ in Woman’s Death: PD

San Diego police are searching for a man now considered a person of interest in the suspicious death of his girlfriend, who was found lifeless in an apartment in Allied Gardens Friday.

According to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), former U.S. Marine Raymond McLeod, 32, is being sought for questioning in the death of Krystal Mitchell, 30.

The couple is from Phoenix, Arizona. They were in San Diego visiting friends when their trip took a tragic turn.

Investigators say a friend of the couple called police just after 1:15 p.m. Friday to report Mitchell was not breathing inside an apartment in the 7600 block of Mission Gorge Road.

When medics arrived, they discovered Mitchell was dead. SDPD Homicide Unit detectives deemed her death suspicious but offered little details beyond that she had trauma to her chest area as the investigation is ongoing.

Police identified Mitchell on Saturday and said the last time she was seen alive was when she was with McLeod.

Detectives believe McLeod, for unknown reasons, fled San Diego after his girlfriend’s death and likely headed south to Mexico. According to police, McLeod fled in a larger, newer, white, four-door Lexus or Infinity with temporary Arizona paper plates.

The car may have been abandoned near the border or at airport or rental car locations.

At this time, he is wanted by police for questioning.

“I think it’s pretty crazy,” neighbor Frankie Tarantino said. “I got my kids. They run around the complex."

“I love living here, think it’s a good area,” neighbor Thomas Faucher said. “The fact it happened right above my apartment is pretty crazy, puts some things in perspective.”

The SDPD released a flyer with McLeod’s photographs and personal details Saturday in hopes of tracking down his whereabouts.

The Marine is described as 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds. Police said he may have access to weapons.

"This place is very quiet," neighbor Jan Schwartz said. "Hope they catch him. Hope they resolve it."

Anyone with information on McLeod, his vehicle or his whereabouts can contact the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or SDPD dispatch at (619) 531-2000, or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

Padres Complete 2016 Draft Class

The Padres made their final 30 selections in the MLB Draft on Saturday. The breakdown of their full list of 43 draftees by position:

24 Pitchers (16 RHP, 8 LHP)
10 Infielders
7 Outfielders
2 Catchers

The Friars only drafted one player from the San Diego area but he has a familiar name. In the 36th round the Padres took Cathedral Catholic shortstop Quinn Hoffman, the son of soon-to-be Hall of Fame closer Trevor Hoffman.

Quinn recently led the Dons to a CIF championship. Padres General Manager A.J. Preller says the pick was not simply nepotism. Young Hoffy can play the game.

"He's a good baseball player," said Preller. "A guy who can stay in the middle of the infield as a shortstop. He's got really good actions; contact bat; he's a prospect."

The Padres will try to sign him but that will be difficult seeing as how Hoffman has a commitment to play baseball at Harvard and backing away from that kind of education is not easy to do (plus I'm sure his mom and dad will have some input there).

Preller and his team will now start the signing process and hope to start having guys under contract by Monday morning. Here is the list of all the players taken by the Padres in the 2016 MLB Draft:

Nightclub Massacre Rekindles Gay Blood Donor Controversy

Even as blood donors waited on long lines to help victims of Sunday morning's massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, gay men still face strict restrictions on giving blood — a twist not lost on commentators on social media.

Only gay and bisexual men who have not had sexual contact with another man for at least a year are eligible to donate, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

"The awful irony that the blood banks of Orlando are not accepting gay donors is just awful," tweeted Nick Nazzaro, an illustrator in Boston. "Awful awful awful. Not funny irony, just awful."

Another tweet, from Brian Gerald Murphy, co-creator of activist group Legalize Trans, urged the FDA to change its policy on blood donations.

"Gay. Men. In. Orlando. Can't. Give. Blood. To. Their. Bleeding. Battered. Community. Dear @US_FDA, CHANGE THAT NOW," he tweeted.

The lifetime prohibition against gay and bisexual men donating blood — enacted in 1983 to protect those receiving blood transfusions from being infected with HIV — was lifted in December, when the FDA announced the new policy. But some activists say the new policy is still discriminatory.

Omar Mateen opened fire at the Pulse nightclub around 2 a.m., exchanging shots with a police officer and taking club-goers hostage before being killed by a SWAT team, authorities said. Mateen was armed with an assault rifle and a handgun, they said.

At least 50 people were killed in the massacre, the worst mass shooting U.S. history that occured as the country celebrated LGBT pride month.

OneBlood, a nonprofit clinic in Orlando, put out a call for blood early Sunday — especially for O negative, O positive and AB plasma donors. By early afternoon, it thanked donors on its website, said it was at capacity and asked donors to give over the next few days.

But on Twitter it also cautioned against false reports that FDA guidelines had been lifted. All FDA guidelines remain in effect, it said.

San Diegans will honor the victims of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history Sunday night at two vigils.

One vigil will be held at 7 p.m. at the Hillcrest Pride Flag Sunday, located at University Avenue and Normal Street.

A second vigil will be held at the North County LGBTQ Center in Oceanside at 510 N. Coast Highway Ste #C. The vigil will begin at 7 p.m., Chuck Lowery, Deputy Mayor of the City of Oceanside, announced.

"We are devastated by this horrific act of violence. Our hearts break for all the victims and their families and stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA community in Orlando. Violence will not intimidate us form living our authentic selfs, or prevent us from loving one another. We must come together as a nation to affirm the love that conquers hate," a statement from the LBTQ Center of Oceanside read.

Sunday, a gunman armed with an assault-type rifle and handgun stormed into the crowded nightclub, killing at least 50 and wounding 53. The massacre marks the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

NBC 7 will update this story with more information when the vigils happen.

Who Is the Florida Nightclub Gunman?

Authorities have identified the man who stormed a Florida nightclub and opened fire early Sunday morning as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old Florida resident who was born in New York City.

With the investigation still in the early stages, indications are that Mateen wanted to be associated with the terrorist group ISIS and was upset by seeing a gay couple kiss, according to an NBC News investigation. But it wasn't clear what drove him to kill dozens and wound dozens more at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Mateen died in a shootout with police.

President Barack Obama delivered a somber address to the nation Sunday afternoon, saying of Mateen: "What is clear is that he was a person filled with hatred."

Obama noted his administration has "reached no definitive judgment on the precise motivations of the killer."

Law enforcement sources told NBC News Mateen called 911 shortly before the shooting to express allegiance to the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and mentioned the brothers who planted bombs at the 2013 Boston Marathon. An FBI spokesman confirmed that the calls were made, but did not discuss the content of the calls beyond the Islamic State.

Mateen, who lived in Port St. Lucie, in South Florida, made inflammatory comments in 2013 indicating he had possible terrorist ties, but they could not be substantiated, according to FBI official Ron Hopper.

He was investigated again in 2014, due to possible ties to an American suicide bomber, but a connection could not be substantiated.

The attack came during national LBGT pride month, and an NBC News interview with Mateen's father, Mir Seddique, indicated that a hatred of gay people may have contributed to the shooting.

Mateen was angered when he saw two men kissing in Miami several months ago, Seddique said. He suggested that might be related to the attack, which he said had nothing to do with religion.

Seddique also said Mateen was a husband and father to a 3-year-old boy.

The Washington Post published an interview with a woman who said she was Mateen's ex-wife, who said he beat her repeatedly.

"He was not a stable person," she reportedly said on condition of anonymity because she feared for her safety.

A man who picked up the phone at Mateen's listed address, Mustafa Abasin, told NBC News: "We are in shock and we are sad." He would not explain how he knew the gunman, but added that he was aiding investigators.
