A pilot-in-training and flight instructor went missing in a single-engine Cessna 172 after departing from Catalina Island airport over the weekend, launching a coordinated search Monday.

The Coast Guard and Federal Aviation Administration launched a search Monday after the four-seater plane did not land at the Van Nuys Airport as scheduled.

The small plane took off from Catalina Island and was expected at Van Nuys Airport Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The FAA said in preliminary reports that two people were aboard.

The training pilot's family identified him as Edmond Haronian. They said he was to arrived at Van Nuys Airport with his flight instructor from Encore Flight Academy.

Haronian posted pictures to social media on Saturday, the day the plane went missing.

"Since Saturday, which is May 28, we have not had any news from him. We have not heard from him — no calls, no texts. We are very worried," Saeed Majdipour, the pilot's brother-in-law, said.

Haronian's brother-in-law said the family became worried when Sunday came, and no one had heard from the pilot.

They contacted the flight academy, and employees confirmed that Haronian and his instructor were missing.

The family was upset as the academy did not contact them right away.

Haronian's Mercedes remained in the parking lot over the weekend.

Encore Flight Academy did not immediately return calls for comment.

The U.S. Coast Guard released photos as the team searched Monday evening. The team spent 10 hours searching around Catalina Island, and didn't find any signs of wreckage or debris.

Haronian's last call was to his sons shortly before 1 p.m. when he told them he would be taking off.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search and said it would resume if wreckage from the plane was discovered.

Haronian's family said it hired private helicopters to assist with the search.

A professional surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack 13 years ago blew away the competition in an impressive performance in Fiji over the weekend, NBC's "Today" reports.

Bethany Hamilton, 26, was an underdog in the World Surf League’s Fiji Women’s Pro, where she went up against a six-time world champion and the world's top-ranked female surfer.

Hamilton stunned spectators to clinch a third-place finish, reaching the semifinals in Tavarua, Fiji. She lost Monday to Johanne Defay of France but still topped her previous career-high finish of ninth in a WLS event.

Hamilton lost her arm when she was attacked by a shark while surfing in Hawaii at the age of 13.

WHO Releases New Guidelines on Zika Virus

The World Health Organization updated its recommendations Tuesday on pregnancy, sex and the risk of Zika virus. WHO now agrees with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which suggests waiting eight weeks after any possible exposure to Zika to have unprotected sex.

Zika's steady spread across Latin America and Pacific island nations — and its inevitable arrival in parts of the continental U.S. — has many people worried. The biggest concerns about Zika are around how the virus can be transmitted. So far, the evidence points to male semen as the source of transmission.

The virus is mostly carried by the Aedes mosquitoes, but there are several clear examples now of sexual transmission, NBC News reported.

At this point it is not clear if a woman is able to pass the virus to a male partner. For women wanting to have children in the future, there is no evidence that if they are infected now, the virus will cause birth defects later.

Husband Kills Would-Be Rapist: PD

A Bronx man allegedly beat an attacker to death with what appeared to be a tire iron after the attacker tried to rape the man's wife, law enforcement sources told NBC 4 New York.

The woman's 61-year-old husband was arrested on manslaughter charges Tuesday, hours after police say he fatally beat the would-be rapist in the elevator of the couple's Washington Avenue apartment building.

The alleged rapist, 43-year-old Earl Nash, forced his way into the building shortly after 10 p.m., authorities said.

Nash allegedly knocked at the victim's door, pushed his way in when she answered and exposed himself and tried to tear off the woman's clothes, according to sources. Amid the struggle, the woman called for her husband and one of the woman's cousins tried to fight off Nash.

Sources said that Nash left the apartment and got into the elevator as the woman's husband was coming to her aid. The woman pointed out Nash to her husband, and sources said the husband swung what appeared to be a tire iron at Nash.

The pair then scuffled, sources said. Nash allegedly whipped the woman's husband with a belt, and the husband in turn bashed Nash in the head and body with the tire iron.

One of the blows appeared to fracture the left side of Nash's skull, and the man was pronounced dead on arrival to Lincoln Hospital

The couple's son said he saw his mother and aunt being attacked.

"He started beating on my mother and my aunt, and they started fighting back," the son said. "He tried to rip their clothes off and he tried to sexually harass them."

He added, "I ran upstairs and saw the guy was in the elevator and he was bleeding, and my mother was sweating, her clothes were off. I didn't know what to think."

The husband's family defended him Tuesday morning, claiming he was trying to protect his wife.

Sources said that Nash has 19 prior arrests, and had served at least four years in a state prison.

Several playbooks used by Trump University were released to the public Tuesday and detail how much students paid to attend the now-closed school.

The Washington Post asked U.S. Federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel to intervene in order to ask for thousands of pages of documents to be unsealed in one of the class-action lawsuits against Donald Trump and Trump University. The judge agreed issued the unsealing Friday in a San Diego courtroom.

In the class action lawsuits, Trump University is accused of misleading students with unfulfilled promises of teaching them the secret to being successful in the real estate business. The allegations outlined in court documents include Trump University, which took in over $40 million, was fraudulent and deceptive. Students paid up to $35,000 for real estate seminars, according to court documents.

Two class-action lawsuits against the now-closed Trump University are being heard in San Diego courtrooms, another lawsuit is based in a New York court. The San Diego cases include: Cohen v. Trump, a nationwide class action lawsuit and Makaeff v. Trump, a class action in California, Florida and New York.

Trump denies the allegations in the lawsuits. His attorney, Daniel Petrocelli said, “the case is unwarranted; (Trump) will defend himself fully."

The documents released Monday are associated with the Cohen v. Trump case.

A San Diego-based U.S. Coast Guard rescued an elderly woman from a cruise ship near La Jolla Monday after the passenger began experiencing heart attack-type symptoms.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said Sector San Diego received a report from a Carnival Imagination cruise ship around 9 p.m. stating a woman aboard the ship was ill. The cruise ship was approximately 33 miles west of La Jolla at the time of the call.

A Coast Guard duty flight surgeon recommended that the 81-year-old passenger be medically evacuated from the ship for emergency treatment. San Diego Coast Guard crews launched a Response Boat-Medium (RBM) to the cruise ship and the woman, her husband and a nurse embarked onto the Coast Guard’s vessel.

Coast Guard officials said the RBM arrived in San Diego at 12:30 a.m. and the victim was then transferred to an ambulance and taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest.

No further details were released. The woman’s condition, as of Tuesday afternoon, is unknown.

Fire Victim Credits Cat With Saving Her Life

A San Diego woman who escaped a destructive early morning fire Tuesday credited her car with saving her life.

Fire destroyed the single story home near 72nd street and El Cajon Boulevard in the Rolando community of San Diego.

The homeowner was sleeping when the fire started at 1:30 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said.

Firefighters arrived to find flames throughout the home and shooting out from multiple windows.

The homeowner had escaped and was outside the home when crews arrived.

The woman told firefighters that it was her cat that jumped on her and woke her up.

"Thankfully the cat was there," said Bat. Chief David Gerboth. "Unfortunately the cat did perish in the fire."

One dog and another cat also died.

A tow truck driver who was next door tried to spray water on the fire but the water wasn't working. He also towed her car across the street out of harm's way, officials said.

The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes. SDFD investigators determined the cause to be electrical.

No other information was immediately available.

San Diego Man Killed in ATV Crash

A San Diego man was killed in an off-road crash in San Luis Obispo, California, over the weekend while riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), officials confirmed.

According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department, Joshua Buttita, 30, was driving a Rhino ATV Monday just before 2:15 p.m. on a dirt road in the 3500 block of Soda Road in rural Paso Robles near Lake Nacimiento when, for unknown reasons, he failed to navigate a turn.

When deputies arrived, they found the ATV had rolled over and crashed, and Buttitta was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said Buttitta was riding with one passenger, who was not injured in the rollover. The passenger was identified as Andrew Jupin, 25, also from San Diego. Both Buttitta and his passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The incident is under investigation but officials have determined it was an accident. A toxicology exam is being conducted to determine if alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash, officials said, and those results could take two to six weeks.

The coroner in San Luis Obispo will determine the victim’s cause and manner of death. His family has been notified, the sheriff’s department said.

Officials said the area where Buttitta and Jupin were riding is not an area where many ATV riders typically off-road.

Border Agents Didn't Buy Fugitive's Fake ID: Feds

$

A Los Angeles murder suspect on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list may have been staying in Tijuana for weeks before he nervously tried to slip back into the U.S. with a fake ID, federal authorities said Tuesday.

Philip Patrick Policarpio, accused of gunning down his pregnant girlfriend in April, aroused suspicion when he tried to cross at the San Diego port of entry Sunday evening with a female companion whom he'd met at a "gentlemen's club" in Tijuana, said Deirdre Fike, the FBI Assistant Director in Charge.

He was vague and inconsistent during an inspection with U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, and grew anxious when asked to provide fingerprints, said Sidney Aki, CBP's port director at San Ysidro.

Policarpio, 39, was taken into custody after a background check revealed there was a warrant out for his arrest.

"Initially we did not know who we had in our custody," Aki said. "Based on some indicators such as the evasiveness, vague information and the fact that the ID that he had, the photo didn't match up with him - it looked similar, but it wasn't him. That led us to more questions and ultimately the fingerprint query."

Aki said agents screen 133,000 people at the border every day.

According to Fike, Policarpio said during an interview he was lost while trying to reach a location in Mexico and didn't intend on returning to the U.S.

He was not armed.

The FBI says Policarpio had been on the run since killing his girlfriend, Lauren Olguin, on April 12. The two had gotten into an argument at a friend's home in the Rampart area that day. Policarpio allegedly got angry, beat Olguin and shot her in the forehead, killing her and her unborn baby.

He was on parole for a 2001 conviction for assault with a firearm and other violations.

Policarpio was expected to be arraigned this week.

Olguin mother's, Jerilyn Olguin, said she was relieved to find out her daughter's suspected killer was in custody.

"My daughter's not coming back but it does feel like a weight's lifted," she said, "like there is some closure."

Community Leaders Criticize Police Post-Trump Response

Days after three dozen people were arrested while protesting a Donald Trump rally in downtown San Diego, several community leaders are saying the law enforcement response was “unwarranted."

"Militarized police do not belong in America's Finest City," Christian Ramirez, Human Rights Director of Alliance San Diego said Monday.

“It’s unacceptable to have a police presence of that magnitude in a residential area,” Ramirez said referring to Barrio Logan.

San Diego Police arrested 35 people Friday after declaring an "unlawful assembly" that occurred after the Trump rally ended and protesters clashed with Trump supporters near the entrance to the Gaslamp.

Local law enforcement agencies provided officers wearing riot gear in light of violent protests days previously in Anaheim and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Officers carried batons and bags of tear gas.

Community activist Kiki Ochoa said his organization, Union del Barrio, left Chicano Park at 1 p.m. and marched to the Gaslamp with almost 1,000 people including older community members, children and babies in strollers.

“The police dressed up in militarized gear, paratrooper gear and felt the need to use what they wore,” Ochoa said.

The Americans for Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) stood with those in Barrio Logan, saying they have never seen this kind of militaristic response from the police.

"Does it take 10 officers to trample on one person that is sitting down with his legs crossed, arms crossed," asked Norma Chavez-Peterson, Executive Director of ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties. "Could it have been one officer?"

She urged members of the public to reach out to the ACLU with their personal experiences.

Around 4:30 p.m. Friday, several fights broke out in the crowd with protestors pushing and shoving.  NBC 7 News crews witnessed several people suffering from injuries associated with pepper spray.

SDPD Chief Zimmerman said most of the crowd left the area within an hour after a dispersal order was given.

As of 6 p.m., protestors had blocked Harbor Drive between Downtown San Diego and Barrio Logan. Officers marched down Harbor Drive towards Barrio Logan where they arrested several holdouts.

In anticipation of the news conference, SDPD spokesperson Lt. Scott Wahl issued the following statement to NBC 7:

"We are proud of the professionalism, restraint and patience displayed by all of the involved officers and deputies during Mr. Trump's visit to San Diego. They provided a safe environment to allow for the freedom of speech. Our decision to declare an unlawful assembly came as a result of violent behavior and unlawful acts within the crowd of protestors. We are very pleased with the outcome of Friday's event.”

The Red Cross’ goal is to raise awareness for the organization and to encourage community support and involvement.

Rough Road Trip Ends with a 16-4 Padres Loss

$

After a rough road trip the Friars head back to Petco Park on Wednesday. The last of their eight game road trip was Tuesday afternoon against the Seattle Mariners in Interleague play, and it was a brutal one. James Shields got the start on the mound for the Padres, and he had a painful outing against the Mariners.

In the second inning Robinson Cano earned a bases loaded walk from Shields to bring in Luis Sandinas. That gave the Mariners an early 2-0 lead. The second inning proved to be a run-fest for Seattle. With two men on base for Kyle Seager, he stepped up and sent a long three run shot to the nosebleed seats in right field and the Mariners increased their lead to 7-0.

In the third inning, Shields faced Seth Smith at bat with two men on base. But the former Padre smacked a three run homer and brought the score to 10-0 in favor of the Mariners. That would be the end of Shields’ work for the day. In the worst start of his career, Shields allowed eight hits, 10 runs, and four walks. Luis Perdomo came in to replace him on the hill.

After five innings it looked like the Friars would give the M’s a no hitter. Cue Travis Jankowski. In the top of the sixth the Padres were down 16-0. Jankowski knocked a two run shot off Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma to get the Padres on the board. It was the outfielder’s first homerun of the season. That was about all the good news the team would see for the day.

The Padres were hit so hard they had position players as their relieving pitchers. In the eighth inning starting catcher Christian Bethancourt was on the mound for the Padres. His 53 mile-per-hour knuckleball got some laughs from Matt Kemp and a few of the players in the dugout. A few pitches later Bethancourt hit Seth Smith with a knuckle-curve. It was a short lived outing for Bethancourt who then traded places with infielder Alexi Amarista. Amarista had thrown three pitches in his career, and two of those were outs. He wound up throwing just one pitch which ended up being a bases-loaded groundout to mercifully end the inning.

The Padres lost to the Mariners 16-4 in the second of their four scheduled meetings this week. The Padres are in last place in the NL West and have lost 12 of their last 15 games. They hold a 20-33 record this season. The Friars are back in San Diego on Wednesday to close out the last two games of this interleague series at Petco Park.

Beware of Checks in the Mail

Robert Pike is retired but wanted to make a little extra money.  He found an offer to be a mystery shopper.

Within a few days he had a check in the mail for $985.

People are getting similar letters as scam artists use the cover of a mystery shopping company to trick people out of their money.

"When you get an unexpected check in the mail I would be very, very concerned," said Sheryl Reichert with the Better Business Bureau.  She says people who cash the checks end up losing the money.

The letter sent to Robert included instructions that told him to cash the check at his local bank, take $200 out of it for his pay and use $20 for a shopping visit at Walmart. He was supposed to keep track of his Walmart experience as part of his mystery shopping job. After that, he was supposed to send $765 through Western Union to a charity in Georgia. That was also part of his mystery shopping experience.

But Robert had his doubts.

"It wasn't very professional," said Robert. The check looked real but the instructions were poorly written. There was no letterhead, just a page telling him what to do with the money and how to evaluate his shopping experience.

But Sheryl Reichert says the check will bounce and after it's too late, the person falling for the scheme will be on the hook to send the money back to the bank.

"You are responsible for the checks that you deposit," said Reichert, "so if you deposit a check that is bad your bank will come after you for the money.

But by then, many victims will have already spent or wired the money and will not be able to get it back.

Robert didn't fall for the scam but he's afraid someone in bad need of money might cash the check.

"If you're getting a check in the mail and you haven't done any work yet, that a good sign it's a scam."

Slauson Gets First Crack At Center Position

$

0

Danny Woodhead broke off a big run around the right side and headed for the end-zone. Once there, he was greeted by his new center, Matt Slauson, who had bolted ahead of his teammates and promptly lifted Woodhead up off the ground to celebrate the touchdown.

That’s a sequence Chargers fans would love to see a few more times this year.

Especially after seeing only four total rushing touchdowns during San Diego’s entire 2015 season.

Now to put this in perspective, Woodhead’s touchdown came during the Chargers scheduled organized team activities (OTAs). During OTAs there is no tackling and the players are not wearing full pads like they do on Sundays.

But at the moment, Slauson is the one taking snaps with the first team and hiking the ball to Philip Rivers.

After last year’s 4-12 disaster, the rushing attack must make improvements. Maybe this new man in the middle is exactly what the Chargers need.

It’s hard to miss Slauson when you see him. The former Bears offensive lineman stands a robust 6’ 5” and his listed weight on the team’s website is 320 pounds.

Slauson primarily played guard during his 3 years in Chicago. Before that he spent four years with the franchise that drafted him – the New York Jets.

He was selected in the 6th round of the 2009 draft after playing at Nebraska and within a year, he was New York’s starting left guard.

He has also played center in the past and so far, it looks like that is where the Chargers want him – and need him – to help out.

“It’s been good, this line really makes it easy,” said Slauson. “Having Philip (Rivers) in the backfield making calls and everything has really made it smooth. I’ve been coming in and trying to be a pro and catch up as fast as I can.”

“Everybody has really welcomed me. It felt really nice getting to know all the guys. Philip has been really great and of course I got my guy (Danny) Woodhead and Kellen (Clemens) - really good friends of mine.”

Slauson may appear to be an intense guy on the gridiron, but he admitted it was not always that way when he was younger.

“That was something I had to always learn because I’ve always been a big guy and as a big kid growing up, your parents teach you that you have to play differently with smaller kids and it wasn’t actually until college that I flipped the switch and started playing mean. It’s something you have to have in this (NFL) game.”

The Chargers desperately need someone to stabilize the center position and help fortify the offensive line.

Other standouts on Tuesday came from the defensive side of the ball.

Cornerback Richard Crawford made a good impression when he intercepted Zach Mettenberger on a deep ball over the middle.

Crawford hails from Oceanside and is a graduate of El Camino high school. The 5'11" SMU product spent time on the Chargers practice squad back in 2014 and is hoping to catch on again with his hometown team.

Crawford was originally a 2012 7th round draft pick by the Washington Redskins.

Practically the whole defense started jumping up and down on the sidelines when defensive back Larry Scott picked off quarterback Mike Bercovici.

Scott was a ballhawk in the secondary during 7-on-7’s and had a nice breakup in the end-zone as well.

Scott is a 5'11" undrafted rookie corner from Oregon State.

Only 100 more days until the NFL season kicks off on Thursday, September 8th with the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos hosting the Carolina Panthers on NBC7.

Sacramento Kings point guard Darren Collison, a former Clipper and UCLA Bruin, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence Monday in Southern California after he was found with a woman suffering visible injuries, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded to a home in Granite Bay, about 25 miles northeast of Sacramento, on Monday at 1 p.m. after a woman called authorities to say she was being assaulted.

When they entered the home on Oakbrooke Court, deputies saw the woman was injured.

They took Collison, 28, into custody, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

He was booked on suspicion of domestic violence, as well as two misdemeanor warrants of driving on a suspended license.

"We've been made aware of the situation. The Sacramento Kings condemn violence of any kind. We are gathering additional information and once all facts are known we will take appropriate steps," a Kings spokesman said in an email to NBC4.

Collison was born in Rancho Cucamonga and went on to play basketball at the University of California Los Angeles from 2005 to 2009. He was named the Bruin’s co-MVP during his UCLA career. In 2009, he was honored as the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team.

From 2013-2014, Collison averaged 11.4 points per game for the Los Angeles Clippers before averaging a career high of 16.1 points per game with the Sacramento Kings 2014-2015, according to the NBA.

The woman’s identity was not to be released as NBC4 does not identify victims of domestic violence.
