Why Not Use Streaming Technology for Aircraft Data?

0
0

The use of black boxes to record critical flight data is striking many experts as antiquated, even though technology exists to stream information from an aircraft to a ground computer, according to NBC News.

The system doesn’t continuously send data to ground-based computers, but activates in the event of an abnormal occurrence, sending data to the airline to analyze. The airline can then apply corrective action.

The streaming devices are similar to the hardware used in black boxes on aircraft for decades. In the event of a plane crash, the data transmitted can help searchers pinpoint a specific search location.

The technology hasn’t been widely adopted, mainly because of the cost. FLYHT Aerospace Solutions, a Canadian company, provides an on-demand black box at about $100,000 per plane.

Sanders Doesn't Say No to Hypothetical Clinton VP Slot

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said he won’t rule out the possibility of being Hillary Clinton’s running mate.

"Here we are in California, I'm knocking my brains out to win the Democratic nomination," Sanders said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday. "What happens afterwards, we will see. But right now, my focus is on winning the nomination."

Sanders said California is important to win more pledged delegates than Clinton, but also said he will “do everything I can” to ensure Donald Trump is defeated. The onus, he said, was on Clinton to convince his supporters why they should back her.

"If Secretary Clinton is the nominee, it is her job to reach out to millions of people and make the case as to why she is going to defend working families and the middle [class], provide healthcare for all people, take on Wall Street, deal aggressively with climate change. That is the candidate's job to do."

Daredevil Jeb Corliss ripped through a target on China’s Great Wall on Sunday, NBC News reported.

The 40-year old's stunt included skydiving from a helicopter dressed in a wingsuit.

Corliss said he wanted to do something “safer" and was done with “death defying” stunts after flying through a 25-foot wide crevice between two cliff faces in his last feat.

"I'm not about doing death defying stuff anymore," told NBC News. "That's not the point. What I'd much rather do is things that are safe, repeatable, but more difficult."

Possible Shark Attack in SoCal

A three-mile stretch of the shoreline at Corona del Mar State Beach in Southern California remained closed Monday morning after a swimmer was apparently bitten by a shark, Newport Beach lifeguards said.

Newport Beach police said they received reports that a woman swimming in the water was bitten at Corona del Mar State Beach around 5 p.m.

Lifeguards found the woman in distress in the water about 150 yards off shore, and they pulled her out to find large bites on her upper torso and shoulder, Newport Beach City Police spokeswoman Tara Finnigan said.

She was conscious and breathing when she was taken to a nearby hospital. Police could not comment on the extent of her injuries.

The woman was described as an experienced swimmer.

NBC4 has learned that the victim's injuries and bites appear to be from a shark.

Officials, however, said they could not find a shark in the water when the attack happened. Rob Williams, a lifeguard with Newport Beach Fire, at one point said it was possible the animal bite may have come from a sea lion.

A three-mile stretch from Newport Pier to Corona del Mar beach was closed after the attack. The water was evacuated, and the stretch of beach was to remain closed for 24 hours, Newport Beach Lifeguard Captain John Moora said.

Officials said they hoped to reduce the closure to 1 1/2 miles from Balboa Pier to Corona del Mar State Beach for the holiday. As NewsChopper4 flew overhead the beach, the shoreline was packed with Memorial Day weekend beachgoers.

Corona del Mar State Beach is a popular place for swimmers, according to the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

A shark sighting in October of 2015 shut down a stretch of the beach near Newport Pier. In that sighting, an 8-foot shark was spotted along the coast. Newport Beach Pier is about 5 miles north of Corona del Mar State Beach.

A month prior in September 2015, a hammerhead was caught on camera acting aggressively toward a kayaker.

The warm weather may draw more sharks to the Southern California coast, experts said in a previous report.

NBC4's Marin Austin contributed to this report.

A candidate for chairman for the Libertarian Party stripped his clothes on live TV before dropping out of the race on Sunday, NBC News reported.

James Weeks was supporting the vice presidential campaign of Derrick Grayson when he took off his suit, shirt and tie and danced around, according to video of the convention broadcast by C-SPAN.

He then said, "I'm sorry; that was a dare," and said he was abandoning his own campaign for party chairman.

The convention, which was contested, had to go to a second ballot before the Libertarians nominated former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld as its presidential ticket.

La Costa Canyon’s Mickey Moniak Looks Ahead to the MLB Draft

High School baseball playoffs are underway in San Diego and the La Costa Canyon Mavericks are making a run for the championship. Their playoff appearance isn’t the only reason the baseball team is on the radar. Centerfielder Mickey Moniak is a steady contributor for this squad, and also happens to be a potential first round MLB draft pick.

Pro scouts have been watching Moniak closely. During his junior year he hit a .426 average with 28 RBI and 29 runs scored. While the national spot light is on the slugger, he’s staying focused and realistic. Moniak committed to UCLA his freshman year and says he’ll be happy playing at the collegiate level.

“College is just as good. You know, UCLA is a great school” says Moniak. “I’ve been committed there since freshman year and Coach Savage is one of the top in the country. Great program, great school so either way it’s going to be a win-win.”

Moniak’s skills are impressive, but not surprising when you take into account his lineage. His father, Matt Moniak played baseball for San Diego State University and his grandfather played in the big leagues for the Boston Red Sox. Mock drafts have Moniak going to the Phillies as their first overall pick, but given the unpredictable nature of the MLB Draft we decided to throw some other scenarios at Moniak, like maybe staying in his backyard as a Friar. “I love the Padres! That’s been my favorite team since I was born” says the outfielder. “My dad is a Padres fan. We’re all Padres fans here. San Diego would be awesome. It’s where I grew up and I’ve never known anything else. I love the Padres. They’ve always been my number one team.”

If he's selected first overall, the La Costa Canyon High senior would join the ranks of top San Diego-area draft picks Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Bush, Stephen Strasburg and Brady Aiken.

The 2016 MLB Draft is starts June 9th. The Padres have the 8th overall pick.

Loved Ones Gather for 17-Year-Old Fatally Stabbed

Loved ones gathered in Spring Valley Sunday, just feet from where Jeffrey Quirino was stabbed last Monday, to remember the 17-year-old victim.

Quirino died in the hospital Sunday morning, nearly one week after someone stabbed him on the sidewalk of Delrose Avenue, Sheriff's detectives confirmed.

His older sister Kimberly Quirino said she was by his side until the end.

"We call him our giant, gentle giant because he was really big, but he was like the nicest person ever," she said of her brother.

Jeffrey was the youngest in his family, but loved ones said he took care of his disabled mother.

He had plans to finish school and join the Navy to help support her.

"He was the one always by her side, he was the one keeping the family together," his sister said.

A shrine has been growing on Delrose Avenue since last week filled with cards, flowers and candles.

Even in death Jeffrey donated his organs benefiting several people, including saving another 17-year-old who now has Jeffrey's big heart.

San Diego Sheriff's deputies responded last Monday to a report of a fight on Delrose Avenue in Spring Valley, but by the time authorities arrived investigators said a driver passing by had already taken Quirino to the hospital.

Detectives from the San Diego Sheriff's homicide detail, Rancho San Diego Station and the East County Gang Task Force are investigating the stabbing, but said it will be a difficult case because they only have a vague description of the suspect, they said.

"He'll live on in between us," she said. "He'll never be forgotten."

Kimberly and her boyfriend are expecting a son in October, and they're naming him Jeffrey.

"Now he's our angel," she told NBC 7.

Veterans Rally to Clean Mural

Word of a vandalized Vietnam memorial in Venice, California, inspired scores of veterans — some from as far as Arizona — to clean up the spray-painted mess ahead of Memorial Day.

Extensive graffiti — a thick sheen of silver paint — covered the mural, which bears the names of 2,273 veterans who vanished in Vietnam and has stood untouched since 1992.

LA County Sheriff's Department investigators showed up Saturday night to assess the wall on Pacific Avenue near Sunset Court and take pictures.

"This is about as bad as burning an American flag, stomping on it," said John Scudder, a Marine veteran of 11 1/2 years who brought his construction truck and paint remover to help organize a cleanup. "Just like that flag is a symbol of freedom, this is a symbolization of names of people who gave their lives for this country."

Word of the vandalized mural spread all the way to Arizona, where Navy veteran Kelly Townsend packed up her kids and made the drive from Phoenix to LA.

"I was reading about it this morning. It upset me," Townsend said.

She was among dozens of volunteers who showed up Sunday morning ready to work.

"I was so hurt by what I saw on the news this morning," said Charlie Saulenas, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient. "I knew that this was my job for Memorial Day."

A graffiti removal team said with no protectant having been applied to the wall, removing the graffiti would also remove the veterans' names. As the volunteers worked, names began to come off.

But volunteers said they will repaint the names — every single one of them.

"People give up their lives for our life, our way of life, and for them to just basically spit on stuff like this, it's so saddening," said Esmeralda Jordan, an Air Force veteran.

The president of the National Veterans Foundation, Floyd Meshad, said he's been working for years to have the wall restorey.

Meshad said he hopes this will expedite those efforts, as the overwhelming response from volunteers has proven the community wants the wall there for good.

Woman, 92, Dies After Caregiver Accused in Friend's Fall

An elderly Oceanside woman has died just weeks after her caregiver was accused of critically injuring her best friend, a friend of the family told NBC 7 San Diego.

Marian Kubic, 92, of Oceanside died Friday.

Surveillance video captured the April 16 confrontation between Kubic's best friend, 93-year-old Margaret Wood and her caregiver of two years, 66-year-old William Sutton.

Wood suffered a broken nose and cracked skull after allegedly being beaten and thrown down three porch steps outside Kubic’s home.

Kubic was not physically injured in the incident but began to deteriorate since the attack, Wood's granddaughter said.

The two friends were placed in the same hospice care facility.

The day before she died Kubic testified through a live video stream from the hospice center where she and Wood were roommates for Sutton's preliminary hearing.

"She did it for Marge. She did it because she wanted to right a horrible wrong as best as she was capable of doing," daughter Reggie Brown said.

Kubic died the next day. Brown said she believes the act took the last of her energy.

"She rallied everything she had for Thursday's hearing," she said.

William Sutton pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted murder and willful cruelty to an elderly adult. He is not charged in Kubic's death.

If convicted on all counts, Sutton could face up to 14 years in prison.

Transgender Man Beaten to Death

A 38-year-old transgender man died after he was attacked at a homeless encampment in Burlington, Vermont, in what police are calling a possible "bias incident."

Amos Beede, of Milton, suffered facial fractures, a subdural hematoma and several broken ribs in the beating on May 25. Police found him lying on the ground at a homeless encampment in the area of Barge Canal on Pine Street.

Beede was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment. His initial prognosis was good, but Beede died of his injuries Sunday, according to police.

The office of the state's chief medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine Beede's cause of death.

Detectives are searching for two people of interest — 21-year-old Erick Averill and 23-year-old Myia Barber — in connection with the attack. Both are transient residents of Burlington, authorities said.

Police said they believe the attackers had motives that were "independent" of Beede's gender identity but that his status as a transgender man may have been an "additional motive."

Authorities will "continue to view this homicide as a possible bias incident" as they investigate, police said.

Anyone with information about the assault or the whereabouts of Averill or Barber are asked to call city police or Champlain Valley Crime Stoppers at 802-864-6666.

Holder Says Snowden 'Performed a Public Service'

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Edward Snowden performed a "public service" by leaking National Security Agency documents but should still be punished, NBC News reported.

"We can certainly argue about the way in which Snowden did what he did, but I think that he actually performed a public service by raising the debate that we engaged in and by the changes that we made," Holder told former White House adviser David Axelrod on an episode of "The Axes Files" podcast Monday.

Holder, however, quickly added that Snowden "harmed American interests" by acting in a way that was "inappropriate and illegal."

Snowden leaked documents about government surveillance programs while working as a security contractor in 2013 and is now exiled in Moscow.

'Justice Will be Served': Family on Cold Case Arrest

Willie Clark Jr.'s  family has been waiting more than a decade for justice.

Clark was murdered April 3, 2006 just outside a bar on Hollister Street in south San Diego. The bar is no longer there, but the pain of losing Willie has never gone.

“We still hear my dad's voice, his laugh. This has all been one big dream. A bad dream,” Clark’s son Julius told NBC 7.” He was shot five times in the lower torso while his back was turned.”

Police said suspect Guillermo Gonzalez-Nunez shot and killed Clark after a fight broke out at La Vuelta Bar.

Officers said Nunez also beat another man with a gun and other patrons before fleeing to Mexico.

“I consider him beyond being a monster,” Julius' mother Mary Lopez said. “He took...a big part of me. In my heart I want justice."

The Clarks prayed every day that their father's murderer would be caught, but justice did not come quickly.

Last Friday, just over 10 years after Clark’s murder, Mexican authorities turned over Guillermo Gonzalez-Nunez to U.S. Marshals who took him into custody.

The Clarks said they forgive the suspect, but they will never forget what he did.

“He needs to pay for what he did because my kids are paying every day because they don't have a father,” Lopez said.

Gonzalez-Nunez was booked into San Diego Central Jail for Murder, Attempted Murder and Assault with a weapon. The Clark family said they will be at his arraignment on Tuesday.

"God bless you, but justice will be served believe that," Julius Clark said of Gonzalez-Nunez. “We’re going to be all right."
