Cuban Open to Being Clinton's or Trump's VP

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he'd "absolutely" consider being Hillary Clinton's running mate if she's willing to move to the center of the political spectrum.

In an interview with "Meet the Press" Sunday, Cuban praised Clinton for her thought-out proposals "because at least we get to see exactly where she stands."

"But I think Sen. Sanders has dragged her too far to the left,” Cuban said, citing her college tuition plan and "other business elements" he believes could hurt the economy. "If she’s willing to listen, if she’s willing to, you know, hear other sides of things, then I’m wide open to discussing it."

Asked about joining a Donald Trump ticket, Cuban said "Same."

"You know, I'm an independent. And I'm fiercely independent and think for myself. And I'd have the same conversation for Donald," Cuban said. "I think Donald has a real chance to win, and that's scary to a lot of people."

Cuban said one of his biggest concerns is the Trump is "listening to everybody, which is fine on the surface" but "it's coming across as if he's proposing things based off the last person he talks to."

Clinton responded to Cuban's comments in a separate interview Sunday, saying she "appreciated his openness to it" and plans to look "far and wide" for a potential vice president.

"I think that is the best way to find somebody who can really capture what's needed in the country, and business people have, especially successful business people who are really successful as opposed to pretend successful, I think have a lot to offer," Clinton said, apparently hitting Trump.

The "Shark Tank" investor also revealed who he thinks will win the NBA Championship.

Todd asked Cuban if he was picking Cleveland, Golden State or Oklahoma City, notably leaving out the Toronto Raptors.

"You know, I'm going to take a little bit of a long shot here and go with the Thunder," Cuban said.

"I've already eliminated the Raptors," Todd responded, though it bears noting that the interview with Cuban was taped before Toronto's win over Cleveland in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals on Saturday night. The Cavs still lead that series, 2-1.

Austria Presidential Election to Close to Call

Austria's presidential election was too close to call on Sunday, meaning postal ballots were set to determine whether a Eurosceptic anti-immigration candidate would become the European Union's first far-right head of state, NBC News reported.

The direct votes gave right-winger Norbert Hofer 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent for Alexander Van der Bellen, a Greens politician running as an independent. But final projections that included still-to-be-counted absentee ballots showed a statistical dead heat of 50 percent each.

A victory for Hofer would be a landmark triumph for resurgent populist parties across Europe that have capitalized on Europe's migration crisis and widespread dissatisfaction with traditional parties of power.

It would be all the more remarkable for being in a prosperous country with low unemployment, where two centrist parties have dominated since it emerged shattered from World War II after its annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938.

The most threatened area of the city is Michoud, a neighborhood between Lake Ponchartrain and Lake Borguen. The Upper 9th Ward is losing just under half an inch to nearly one inch per year.

Groundwater withdrawal was one of the causes, the study found.

Conducted between 2009 and 2012, the study was published last week and used GPS and radar.

More than two dozen people were taken to the hospital Sunday after a church bus heading to a women's retreat in Big Bear crashed in the San Bernardino Mountains, officials said.

"I just recognized the bus and I was like, oh my gosh that’s from my church!" Sarahin Gurrola, church member, said after seeing the crash on news reports.

The crash was reported shortly after 2 p.m. on Highway 330 north of Highland when the bus sideswiped a wall, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The bus then rear-ended a Nissan Versa, CHP said.

When crews arrived, the shuttle bus was on its side, and women inside were screaming for help, CHP said.

San Bernardino County Fire officials initially said more than 20 people suffered injuries and six were seriously hurt.

But CHP, which took over the investigation, later said out of the 22 on the bus, 21 were taken to the hospital and four have major injuries. None are life-threatening.

Highway 330 was shut down from Highland Avenue to City Creek Ranger Station, fire officials said.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the bus' brakes after the crash on the narrow road with blind turns.

A spokesman from the Iglesia De Cristo Ministerios Llamada Final church in Downey said about 200 women were aboard six buses total heading to Big Bear for a yearly retreat.

The one that crashed was the last in the caravan. No one on the other buses saw what happened.

Parishioners were calling the driver of the bus a "hero" because of how she handled the bus after striking a wall.

"I think she’s a hero, I look up to her," Lesly Ortega said.

Ortega was on the bus when the crash occured, and said the driver steered the bus away from a cliff. She also said if a large rock hadn't been there to stop them, they may have gone over.

Smith was a guest of a graduate. She was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries that police said were not life threatening.

In a news release, Dallas Lutheran School executive director Dave Bangert the attacker was "quickly subdued."

"The school was immediately locked down and after an appropriate time the ceremony resumed after prayer for both the victim and the attacker," Bangert stated.

Balloons Cause White House Lockdown

The White House was placed under a brief "lockdown" Sunday after "party balloons" drifted over the grounds and landed on the North Lawn, U.S. Secret Service officials said.

The agency said the White House reacted "out of an abundance of caution," after balloons landed on the North Lawn, the press office roof and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

The Secret Service said there was no "lockdown" per se, but press crews on the grounds reported they were temporarily restricted in their movements.

The incident comes less than two days after a Secret Service agent shot an armed man who approached a White House security checkpoint, placing the executive mansion on lockdown. The man, identified as Jesse Oliveri, of Ashland, Pennsylvania, is still listed in critical condition after he would not drop his weapon and was shot by a Secret Service officer.

Marine Lance Cpl. Jorge Ortiz was on his first deployment to Afghanistan when he lost both of his legs in an IED explosion in 2011.

"I'm fortunate to wake up every morning," the humble Marine said. “I just have to keep pushing for those who never made it back home.”

Sunday Ortiz was honored by the nonprofit “Homes for Our Troops” with the keys to his new accessible home in Valley Center.

The house has many features that make it easier for Ortiz to get around like lower light switches, wider hallways and doors that open with the push of a button.

LCpl cut the ribbon and raised the American flag in front of his home before going inside.

“I don't have to jump through loops, basically an obstacle course to get where I want to be at,” LCpl Jorge said about his home.

“Failure is not an option for me,” he told NBC 7. “Just have to keep driving every day.”

Already planning for the future LCpl Ortiz said he and his wife Aiyanna are hoping to have children.

An Egyptian husband and wife who were among the 66 passengers killed when EgyptAir Flight 804 crashed, have left behind three children, NBC News reported.

Ahmed el Ashry and his wife Reham Mosad were returning to Cairo on Wednesday after spending a month in Paris receiving medical care. Mosad needed cancer treatment, so el Ashry spent their life savings to take her to France for treatment.

Mosad worked at a school in Cairo, whose newspaper published a tribute to the couple. The school posted a statement saying el Ashry couldn’t let his wife go to France by herself, and that he wanted to “lessen the pain of his wife and to prolong her life.”

The school where their three children — Adam, Salma and Alia — are enrolled has allowed them to continue their education at the institution.

Chula Vista's Arriola Shines With USMNT

Chula Vista native Paul Arriola got the opportunity he’s been waiting for Sunday when U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann put him not only on the roster but in the starting XI for a friendly in Puerto Rico.

Arriola shined.

In the 34th minute the 21-year old midfielder/forward for the Club Tijuana Xolos fed Bobby Wood on the break. Wood made it 2-0 with his fifth goal in 18 national team games and Arriola earned his first assist on the senior squad.

But the local guy wasn’t done yet.

After Puerto Rico scored to cut the USMNT lead to 2-1, Arriola tapped an Alejandro Bedoya cross in in the 56th to put the U.S. up 3-1 and record his first goal.

USMNT  won 3-1.

This isn’t the first time Arriola wore the U.S. crest on his chest. He made three starts for the U.S. in the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico and in 2013 joined the U18 team for friendlies against France and Uruguay. Arriola was also a member of the U-20 squad at the 2014 Dallas Cup and NTC Invitational along with the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Earlier this year he was a part of the U-23 Olympic Qualifying team.

Arriola isn’t on Klinsmann’s Copa America roster but got the opportunity against Puerto Rico while USMNT regulars were playing for their Major League Soccer clubs. But after getting an assist and goal in his first cap he’s shown he can rise to the occasion.

The USMNT has friendlies Wednesday against Ecuador in Frisco, Texas and Saturday against Bolivia in Kansas City, Kansas before starting Copa play June 3rd.

Obstacle Course Racing Growing in San Diego

Imagine waking up on a Saturday morning and starting your day with 40 obstacles to climb, run, and lift yourself through. Last Saturday the Epic Series obstacle course race at Dusty Rhodes Park was all about pushing yourself to the limit.

For the Obstacle Course Racing or OCR community, these events are about much more than just the physical challenge.

Dan Hark, Owner of NXPT Fitness in Kearny Mesa had over 70 members from his gym participating. “This is just an exploding sport so it’s just a good way for us noncompetitive athletes to stay active and fit” says Hark. “I still get the butterfly feeling before an event and go I crush it.”

For others, like Aaron Fields-Cypress, it’s a chance to accomplish something they never thought possible. This is his first obstacle course race and he's using this experience to reach a bigger goal. “I’ve been watching American Ninja Warrior since I was a kid” says Fields-Cypress. “That’s one of my goals and this is one of my steps.”

OCR’s are more than just a trend and the world is taking notice. So what is it about these races that have entire families coming out week after week? For some, it’s a way to stay motivated. Epic Series Volunteer Chris Cornwell says, “It’s a personal challenge. I know people my age that I went to school with that are broken and I’m like you know what I’m still young. I want to keep doing this.”

There’s even a place for younger racers. Tim Brown and his seven year old son Jonas live down the street from the race site and noticed the obstacles on their way out for the day. “I don’t know if he’ll be able to pick up half the stuff” says Brown, “but it’s going to be fun to watch.”

Brown had some reservations, but once Jonas took off running and completed every obstacle, he knew this was something they would do again as a family.

This summer the OCR world will take center stage on Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge which will air on NBC network after American Ninja Warrior. I'm one of four hosts of the show along with former NFL linebacker Dhani Jones, retired MLS player Kyle Martino and Team Ninja Warrior's Evan Dollard. Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge premieres on June 13th.

An 85-year-old man is facing DUI charges after crashing his car into a condo at a senior living facility in Oceanside Sunday night, Oceanside police confirmed.

Colleen and Jack Campbell, who live in the damaged condo, were inside when it happened.

"A giant crash, like a crushing sound," Jack Campell described to NBC 7.

The man plowed through the Campbell's garage damaging their neighbor's unit. Luckily no one was hurt.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. in the 3600 block of N. Vista Cantana.

Colleen said she raced outside and saw that her neighbor had crashed into her unit.

She and another man jumped into action trying to help the driver.

"A guy came and pounded on the door and told him 'unlock the door so we can get you out of there,'" Colleen Campbell told NBC 7. "He finally heard him so he yanked him out...but at that point it was like 'let's get out of here, this thing is going to blow'. It was pretty freaky. It's still pretty freaky."

The driver was uninjured in the crash, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

A gas line was broken in the crash, Oceanside PD said, and 30 units were evacuated. Residents were eventually let back inside.

The Campbell's and their neighbor's will sleep at a hotel tonight as their homes are uninhabitable.

SDGE's job made more difficult because police say the  the wreck sheered off the gas line..below the  cut off valve. The wreck sheered off the gas line below the cut off valve making San Diego Gas and Electric's (SDG&E) job more difficult, officials said.

North Comm Fire is also on the scene.

Mebane: "Chargers Defense Has More Talent Than the Seahawks"

$
0
0

Part of the reason defensive tackle Brandon Mebane came to San Diego is he’s sick and tired of seeing double teams and he wants to get blocked by just one guy for a change.

“I got more doubles last year than I got pretty much any year of my career,” said Mebane, who was drafted by the Seahawks in 2007. “Here, where you have five guys on the line of scrimmage, and you don’t know who’s coming or when it’s coming, I like the opportunity of getting more one-on-ones. It’s going to be awesome.”

So he likes the way Defensive Coordinator John Pagano calls a game, which is high praise from a man who won a Super Bowl ring in Seattle with one of the best defenses the NFL has seen in the last 20 years.

“I think the sky’s the limit for this defense, period,” said Mebane. “There’s a lot of talent on this team.”

Well, there can’t be that much talent, right? I mean, this is a 4-12 club that had all kinds of trouble stopping … well, anybody for most of the 2015 season.

“I tell guys there’s more talent on this defense than there was in Seattle.”

Wait, what? The Seahawks defense has been ranked in the top four of the NFL the last four seasons and led the league in total defense in 2013 and 2014, both years ending up in the Super Bowl. And this San Diego Chargers team has MORE talent that that crew???

“If you look at the draft, you have four first round draft picks and you’ve got five second round draft picks on defense,” said Mebane. “In Seattle we only had two first rounders and one second rounder. Everybody else was pretty much down in the draft or wasn’t drafted.”

Mebane, who was a 3rd round selection, makes a good point. The only main cogs in Seattle’s defense taken in the first or second round are Earl Thomas, Bruce Irvin and Bobby Wagner. The Chargers have Corey Liuget, Melvin Ingram, Jason Verrett, Joey Bosa, Manti Te’o, Jeremiah Attaochu, Denzel Perryman, Casey Hayward and Brandon Flowers who were all taken in the top two rounds.

Of course that begs the question: Why aren’t the Chargers playing up to the level of their defensive talent? In Mebane’s experience the most important thing for a defense is trust.

“The key thing is believing in each other, believing that the guy next to you is going to do his assignment the best that he can.”

So if the Chargers can raise the level of trust and have it match their level of talent, we just might see something special at Qualcomm Stadium in 2016.

“All we’ve got to do is just believe in each other and play together and, man, it’s unreal.”

And if they can make enough of an improvement to get back in to the playoffs … THAT would be unreal.

Padres Fall to Dodgers in 17 Innings

$

Getting one walkoff win in a series is exciting. Getting two walkoff wins in a series is really awesome. Getting three walkoff wins in a series is almost unheard of.

The Padres had their chances but couldn’t finish a weekend sweep on Sunday. Instead the Dodgers outlasted the home team to win 9-5 in 17 innings. It’s the 5th time the Padres have had a chance to sweep a series and the 5th time they have fallen short. San Diego also drops to 0-9 on Sunday in 2016.

Los Angeles starter Kenta Maeda was unhittable for four innings. Then things got a little nutty. In the 5th inning Melvin Upton Jr. ended Maeda’s no-hit bid with a line drive single to center. Upton stole second and scored on a single by Christian Bethancourt. Another single and a walk to Jon Jay loaded the bases, bringing us to the Continuing Adventures of Yasiel Puig.

Wil Myers hit a flare to right field that probably should have ended the inning. But Puig got a bad read … then a bad jump … then made a bad decision, opting to dive at the ball. He missed, allowing all three runs to score on the triple and putting the Padres up 4-0.

San Diego starter Colin Rea was great for five innings, allowing just one hit. But as soon as the Padres bats woke up, so did those of the Dodgers. A walk and a hit set up Corey Seager to drive in a run with a single, cutting the lead to 4-1 and chasing Rea. In came Kevin Quackenbush and the lead quickly got smaller.

Quack uncorked a wild pitch to let Chase Utley score then gave up a RBI single to Adrian Gonzalez to trim the lead to 4-3. The San Diego bullpen had more issues in the 7th when Justin Turner hit a solo home run off Ryan Buchter to tie things 4-4. It was just the second run Buchter has allowed all season. In the 8th inning Brandon Maurer’s first pitch was hammered by Howie Kendrick for another solo blast and the Dodgers had their first lead of the day at 5-4.

Wil Myers led off the 8th with a walk and the Padres tied it up again thanks to the hottest hitter on the roster. With two outs Dodgers manager Dave Roberts went to the bullpen to get Kenley Jansen to face Upton. Remember it was Upton who hit the 2-run, walkoff home run on Friday night off Jansen. This time the ball stayed in the park but it was effective anyway.

Upton ripped a triple to right-centerfield to score Myers, sending the game extra innings. Well, not before we got to enjoy another edition of the Continuing Adventures of Yasiel Puig. In the top of the 9th, Puig singled off Fernando Rodney and went to second on a wild pitch. A.J. Ellis tried to move Puig up and put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to third base but Puig just stood at second watching.

So when Carl Crawford flew out to left Puig was still at second instead of tagging and scoring the go-ahead run, which helped send the game to extra innings. Lots and lots of extra innings.

Rookie Luis Perdomo was tasked with prolonging the game as long as he could, and the youngster did an admirable job. He tossed four scoreless innings but ran out of luck in the top of the 17th when the Dodgers loaded the bases and … guess who?

Yasiel Puig lined a 2-run single up the middle. As brain-dead as the man can go on occasion he is still wildly talented. Puig’s single sparked a four-run outburst that sealed the win.

The Padres have to fly up to San Francisco to face the Giants on Monday night. Drew Pomeranz faces Johnny Cueto, who threw a complete game to beat the Padres on Wednesday.

San Diego ranked fourth in the western U.S. as a place for new grads and 19th nationally, in a recent study by Zumper, an apartment search site.

San Diego scored within the top 10 percent of U.S. cities for young professional income and amenities and in the top 20 percent for millennial population and dating life. The report analyzed 260 cities across the U.S., using the latest census numbers and Zumper’s own rental data.

Salt Lake City topped the listing for the western region, with high employment and income scores. Boulder and Denver followed. San Francisco was absent from the list due to the cost of living and the most expensive rent prices in the nation, according to the report.

Former vice president and climate change activist Al Gore is concerned that a potential Donald Trump presidency could roll back progress in the fight against climate change.

"He has said some things on the climate crisis that I think should concern everyone,'' Gore said in an interview with NBC's "Today" show.

Trump has called climate change a hoax created by China.

In the Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," Gore used charts and graphs to make the connection between increasing carbon emissions and the changing climate.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the film's release on Tuesday, Paramount is offering free downloads of it on Amazon, XFINITY on demand, iTunes and other digital retailers.
