NYPD Cop Points Gun at Witness

$

A police officer cuffing a man in Harlem pointed his gun at bystanders filming him, then later punched one of them in the face, according to witnesses and cellphone video.

"My man didn’t do nothing, just sat there recording because what they were doing is wrong," said Eric Worrell, the 17-year-old who recorded the incident. "The fact that he pulled the gun out on us was wrong too."

The officer has been stripped of his gun and badge, police said.

On Thursday evening, officers chased a man suspected of riding an illegal dirt-bike into a public housing project on West 134th Street. They struggled with him while making an arrest, witnesses said.

Worrell, Kalen Adams and Jenico Harvey were in front of the building, and began recording the altercation with their cellphones.

One of the arresting officers noticed them recording, pulled his weapon and pointed it at them while shouting at them to back up, video shows.

"I thought he was going to shoot," said Ronnie Pinkerton Jr., another friend who also recorded the incident. "First thing I thought, he was going to shoot."

Minutes later, a second video appears to show the same officer walk out of the building lobby and punch Harvey in the face before wrestling him to the ground and placing him under arrest.

"The cop was bypassing him, he could've just kept bypassing him, but just turned and hit him and wrestle him down for no reason," Worrell said. "It was crazy."

"He hit him for no reason, hit him real hard," said Pinkerton.

Harvey is described by friends as a college student who is back in the city for summer break.

Law enforcement sources told NBC 4 New York that the video did not show Harvey allegedly yelling, "I'm going to kill you," just before the officer reacted.

Still, neighbors who witnessed the scene or watched the video say the punch wasn't warranted.

"For him to just get punched in the mouth, corralled and apprehended like he's a piece of cattle of some sort, in a rodeo, just makes absolutely no sense," said state Assemblyman Keith Wright.

Officers were apparently in the neighborhood to bust people riding illegal dirt bikes, part of the NYPD's larger initiative to crack down on unlicensed drivers across the city.

A spokesperson for the NYPD said the incident is under internal review and didn't comment on whether there were any arrests in the case.

A lesbian couple who sued the city of Honolulu and a police officer are dismissing their lawsuit in exchange for a settlement, NBC News reported.

Courtney Wilson and Taylor Guerrero will receive $80,000 for dropping the case against the city and Officer Bobby Harrison.

The lawsuit said the couple was holding hands and kissing in a grocery store in March 2015 when Harrison told them to stop and “take it somewhere else.”

The two were allegedly placed in restraints when they failed to comply and were jailed for two days on charges of assault on a law enforcement officer. The charges were eventually dropped.

Guerrero and Wilson have since split, but they remain friends. Guerrero said she's happy with the money from the settlement, and is “glad it's over with."

Bernie Sanders said Saturday he would not back Democratic National Committee Chairwoman and Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in the Democratic primary race for Florida’s 23rd congressional race, NBC News reported.

During a pre-taped interview with CNN that will air Sunday, Sanders said he would support Nova Southeastern University law professor Tim Canova over Rep. Wasserman Schultz. He also added that she would not reappointed her to head the DNC if he is elected president.

"Well, clearly, I favor her opponent," Sanders told "State of the Union" anchor Jake Tapper. "His views are much closer to mine than as to Wasserman Schultz's."

Canova is a Sanders supporter and has accused Wasserman Schultz of backing Hillary Clinton.

In a statement provided to NBC News Saturday, Wasserman Schultz said she has been neutral in the race and would remain so despite Sanders' support of Canova.

Dozens of Military Moms Attend USO Baby Shower

Approximately 100 military moms-to-be and new mothers attended a baby shower at the USO in downtown Saturday. Moms received donated gifts for their baby and information on being a new parent.

National nonprofit Operation Homefront hosted the Star-Spangled Baby Shower in partnership with USO San Diego and Lincoln Military Housing.

“It’s nice that you know you have support out there,” new mom Lina Desastro said.

The Star-Spangled Babies program provides the showers to support service members and their families. Roughly 42 percent of active-duty military children are five years old or younger according to Operation Homefront.

“I actually think this is a really good idea,” Alexis Hallett told NBC 7. “It seems to help a lot of moms. With postpartum…having that resource here is really helpful.”

Military families often live far away from extended family and friends, and the baby showers give new parents a place to go for help.

Fuel Tank Rolls Through LA

The lone remaining external fuel tank from NASA's space shuttle program began a slow ride across Los Angeles early Saturday and arrived 18 hours later at the California Science Center, where it will be on display with space shuttle Endeavour.

The caravan traveled 15 miles from a dock in Marina del Rey down Lincoln and Culver boulevards, to Westchester Parkway, then through Inglewood on Arbor Vitae Street to La Brea Avenue, past the Forum, and north on Vermont Avenue to the museum. Limited to a top speed of 5 mph, the tank arrived just before the 7:30 p.m. PT promised time on Saturday. It was to join the Endeavour at museum's Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center.

"This will be the only place in the world where a whole space shuttle stack with real hardware will be available," said Science Center President Jeffrey N. Rudolph.

The shuttle stack will be available for viewing next week. Eventually, booster rockets will be added to the exhibit.

Endeavour made its own celebrated trip on Los Angeles' streets to Exposition Park after a spectacular Southern California flyover on the back of a jumbo jet. The 15-story, 32 1/2-ton tank, never used in flight, is about half as along as a football field. That's longer than the shuttle, but not as wide, heavy or tall, when the tank is placed on its side.

Trees will be trimmed and utility lines will be temporarily taken down for the move. Los Angeles police suggested drivers avoid several areas along the route due to temporary street closures.

The rust-color tank, aka ET-94, began its monthlong journey to Los Angeles on April 10 when it was pulled out of NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana. Two days later, it was tugged into the Gulf of Mexico to begin a sea voyage that took it through the Panama Canal.

The transport crew made headlines during the trip when crew members helped rescue four people who abandoned a sinking sportfishing boat off Baja, California.

The external tanks, which provided the shuttles with the propellants needed to enter space, were designed to detach from the shuttles and disintegrate as they plummeted back to Earth. ET-94 is actually made up of three tanks: one for oxygen, another for hydrogen and a third collar-like intertank that connects the two others.

The external tank also provided structural support for the shuttles and booster rockets when they were upright on the launchpad.

The ET's skin was coated with polyisocyanurate foam, which protected the tank from heat and helped maintain the proper temperature for the propellants it contained. Its job was done about 8 1/2 minutes after launch when it was jettisoned from the shuttle.

Most of the tank disintegrated in the atmosphere; the rest splashed into the ocean.

NASA used three types of external tanks for the space shuttle program: standard weight, more advanced lightweight tanks and super lightweight tanks. ET-94 is considered a lightweight tank, commonly used throughout the 1990s.

ET-94 was delivered to NASA in January 2001 and, although it was never used in flight, investigators looking into the 2003 Columbia disaster examined the tank in search of possible problems that might have led to the re-entry breakup that killed seven crew members. The team dissected foam coating from parts of the tank, which explains why there are pieces of foam missing from ET-94.

The tank will be restored before it joins Endeavour on display.

More than 200 volunteers unveiled a playground they built in Santee Saturday.

The design of the playground, located in Town Center Community Park, was based on children’s drawings.

It is expected to serve more than 20,000 children and families over the next 15 years.

Volunteers from Foresters Financial, Santee Fire, Kaboom! and others joined in to help, assembling pieces, painting and mixing concrete to create this pillar for the Santee Community.

"I'm hoping that the kids out here, you know, get a chance to be kids again. There's some kids out there who are dealing with adult problems and it's really important for them to have that opportunity to be kids and learn and play and have fun,” Courtny Dolan, Kaboom! Project Manager told NBC 7.

In a practice of patience, the children will have to wait a short while for the paint to dry and the concrete to set before they can enjoy the playground.

A San Diego man who intentionally set multiple fires around City Heights last year will spend the next seven years behind bars, a judge ruled Friday.

Rolando Resendiz, 25, was sentenced on several arson charges stemming from a series of fires between March 2015 and April 2015.

Resendiz was found guilty of intentionally starting several fires in dumpsters, alleyways, trash cans and beds of pickup trucks. He also set fire to the porch of a home on Ogden Street. He was arrested in early April 2015 after police found him walking away from the scene of that porch fire.

Investigators also linked Resendiz to a fire on Wightman Street.

Last year, Resendiz pleaded not guilty to two counts of arson to an inhabited structure and three counts of arson to property. His mother maintained Resendiz’s innocence, saying her son was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Exaggerator Wins the 141st Preakness Stakes

$

Exaggerator has finally beaten Nyquist, and it came in the Preakness on Saturday to end any chance of another Triple Crown.

Seizing the lead at the top of the stretch, Exaggerator splashed past the tiring Kentucky Derby winner and went on for a 3 1/2-length victory over Cherry Wine on a rain-drenched Pimlico Race Course.

Exaggerator's elusive victory over his nemesis came after four tough losses, including a runner-up finish to Nyquist in the Derby. Nyquist finished third.

"I had a dream trip today," jockey Kent Desormeaux said. "It was an amazing race and Exaggerator is an amazing horse."

The day began on a somber note. Two horses died and a jockey was injured in the first four races, one of the horses bred and owned by the owners of the ill-fated Barbaro.

Sent off as the 3-5 favorite in the 11-horse field, Nyquist dueled with Uncle Lino for the lead through the first mile of the 1 3/16th-mile second leg of the Triple Crown.

And then it was all Exaggerator — no kidding.

The 3-year-old son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin trailed by 13 lengths at one point but kept gaining ground along the rail. Desormeaux saw an opening around the final turn, angled outside and Exaggerator took over.

In winning his third Preakness, Desormeaux was grateful for a perfect trip that ended Nyquist's perfect record.

"To me it looked like Nyquist was trying to establish an outward position, maybe in the four path," Desormeaux said. "He was jockeying for position all the way down the back side. And Exaggerator just kind of slid up the fence to the far turn where I actually got to slow him down and say 'whenever I'm ready.' "

Stradivari was fourth, followed by Lani, Laoban, Uncle Lino, Fellowship, Awesome Speed, Collected and Abiding Star.

Exaggerator, the 5-2 second choice, returned $7.20, $3.20 and $2.40. Cherry Wine returned $9.80 and $4.20, and Nyquist paid $2.20 to show. Winning time for the race was 1:58.31.

Nyquist broke well under Mario Gutierrez, and he and 34-1 long shot Uncle Lino went back and forth in the lead. The duel was costly. When asked for his usual winning burst, the son of Uncle Mo just didn't have it for the first time in his career.

"Hats off to Exaggerator and Team Desormeaux. What a great run," Nyquist's trainer Doug O'Neill said. "I didn't think we could get beat, to be honest with you."

Trained by Kent's younger brother, Keith, Exaggerator showed his talent in the slop once again. He won the Santa Anita Derby over a sloppy track, and did the same on a foggy, rainy day. It was the first Preakness winner for the trainer who began his career in Maryland, and third for the Hall of Fame rider.

Last year, American Pharoah became the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, and there were many who thought Nyquist would make it two in a row and become the 13th horse to sweep the Derby, Preakness and Belmont.

The Desormeaux brothers have different personalities, and seem to enjoy ribbing each other. There were no family hugs, and no special celebrations.

"I looked at him and he looked at me, and I got a fist pump," Kent said. "That's all we did."

A drenched crowd of estimated at what would be a record 134,000 saw Exaggerator end his losing streak in a big way.

"It wasn't like we felt we could grind him down," Keith said. "We always felt we had an exceptional talent."

And now, it's on the Belmont Stakes for Exaggerator.

"We can't wait to run in that race," Keith said.

Clinton: Trump is a 'Pretend Successful'

Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump a "pretend successful" who is only focused on "making himself appear great," an attack on the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan.

In an interview on "Meet the Press" Sunday, Clinton told NBC News' Chuck Todd there is "no evidence [Trump] has any ideas about making America great," adding that as the campaigns move forward "we're going to be demonstrating the hollowness of his rhetoric."

Clinton attacked Trump for not releasing his tax returns and proving "that he actually has the level of success he claims to have." She also noted the only two returns that have been made public show he hasn’t paid "a penny in income taxes."

"And yet he goes around talking about make America great. You know, that means paying for our military. That means paying for our roads. That means paying for the VA. If you’ve got someone running for president whose afraid to release his tax returns because it will expose the fact that he pays no federal income tax. I think that’s a big problem," Clinton said.

Padres Walk Away Winners

$

On Friday night the Padres got the biggest of blasts, a walk-off home run by Melvin Upton Jr. to beat the Dodgers at Petco Park. On Saturday night they walked off the Dodgers again. This time, quite literally.

Yangervis Solarte, who was taken off the disabled list before the game, drew a bases loaded walk from Dodgers reliever Chin-Hui Tsao to force in Wil Myers with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Padres a 3-2 win and a chance to sweep Los Angeles.

For most of the game the Padres hitters were like human windmills against Dodgers pitching. They were swinging a lot but hitting nothing but air. Dodgers starter Alex Wood struck out 13 in 6.0 innings. San Diego batters whiffed 19 times total.

But the Padres were able to push across a couple of runs on sacrifice flies by Matt Kemp and Alexi Amarista and that was good enough to keep it close because Cesar Vargas was nails.

The Padres rookie gave up just two runs and whiffed seven in 7.0 innings. A trio of Friars relievers combined to throw another 4.0 innings of no-hit ball and in the 11th it was the Dodgers bullpen that blinked.

Tsao allowed a single to Myers and gave up a long fly ball to Upton, whose bid for back-to-back walk-off bombs ended just in front of the left field fence. Tsao then loaded the bases with two more walks before giving Solarte his free pass on four pitches.

San Diego can complete their weekend sweep on Sunday behind Colin Rea, who takes the mound against Kenta Maeda.

The leader of the Taliban has been killed in a U.S. airstrike, the Afghan government said Sunday.

A statement from the National Directorate of Security was the first official confirmation of Mullah Akhtar Mansoor's death, NBC News reported. It was soon followed by confirmation from Afghanistan's chief executive.

There has been no acknowledgement from the Taliban on Monsoor's death.

The U.S. conducted a precision airstrike targeting Mansoor on Saturday in a remote part of southwest Pakistan. Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook had said the U.S. was "still assessing the results" of the strikes, though senior defense officials told NBC News that Mansoor was "likely killed."

Poll: Clinton's Lead Over Trump Shrinks to 3 Points

$

Hillary Clinton's advantage over Donald Trump has narrowed to just three points, resulting in a dead-heat general-election contest with more than five months to go until November, according to results from a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

The Democrat Clinton gets support from 46 percent of registered voters, while the Republican Trump gets 43 percent. In April, Clinton held an 11-point advantage over Trump, 50 percent to 39 percent, and had led him consistently by double digits since December.

In a more hypothetical matchup, Democrat Bernie Sanders leads Trump by 15 points, 54 percent to 39 percent.

The NBC/WSJ poll — conducted May 15-19 — comes after Trump has become the Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee, but also as the ongoing Clinton-vs.-Sanders Democratic race has become more contentious in recent days.

Families on Edge After Alleged Attempted Kidnapping

Families in San Ysidro are on high alert after a stranger allegedly tried to kidnap a 15-year-old girl in broad daylight.

The alleged incident happened Friday around 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of Mt. Carmel and Padre Tullio drives, just east of Interstate 805.

According to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) a teenage girl was walking westbound on Mt. Carmel Drive when she noticed a driver in a red Honda sedan closely traveling next to her.

The girl began to walk faster and the driver, in turn, sped up, police said.

The driver sped past the girl and then stopped his car to block her from walking across the street. Police said he then grabbed the victim by her arm and ordered her to get inside his car.

The teen was able to twist and pull her arm away and escape, police said.

The attempted kidnapping suspect quickly drove off and was last seen turning onto Alquinas Drive.

Residents said the incident is shocking.

“It could happen anywhere – but it happened yesterday, here,” one neighbor told NBC 7 on Saturday.

The encounter happened just outside Nicole Delatorre’s home on the same street she used to walk on to get to school every day.

“I was obviously really scared [when I heard about it],” she told NBC 7. “I felt like that’s a pretty big violation of someone’s privacy.”

“For something like that to happen to a young girl, it’s kind of a terrifying experience because now everyone is kind of worried about what we are going to do,” Delatorre added. “It’s a very busy walkway.”

“I’ve been here almost 25 years and nothing like this happened before,” another resident said. “And it shocked everybody around here.”

The area is a popular route to a nearby church and school. Now, with police investigating the attempted kidnapping, many residents said they would be more vigilant.

As of Sunday morning, the suspect had not been arrested.

Police described him as a man in his 30s with a medium build, a beard and brown hair down to his ears. He wore a grey shirt and jeans at the time of the incident. Witnesses said he drove an older, dirty, red Honda sedan with a loud muffler.

Anyone with information on the case can contact Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

Ahead of California’s June 7 primary, Sanders will take his campaign to the North County, holding a rally at the stadium of Rancho Buena Vista High School, located at 1601 Longhorn Dr.

The doors to the rally open at 11 a.m. and Sanders is expected to speak at 2 p.m.

In anticipation of crowds, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO) said some road closures will be in effect in the area surrounding the high school, including Longhorn Drive. There will be no parking on that street, officials said, and very limited parking elsewhere around the school.

The SDSO said road closures include:
• No parking on Shadowridge Drive
• No Parking on South Melrose Drive and surrounding areas
• Antigua Drive at Shadowridge Drive
• Antigua Drive at Longhorn Drive
• Promontory Ridge at Longhorn Drive
• Crystal Ridge at Longhorn Drive

Attendees were advised to carpool, get dropped off or take public transit to the rally. SDSO officials said the entrance to the rally is at Longhorn Drive via South Melrose Drive.

Sunday’s rally marks the second stop in San Diego County for Sanders in as many days. On Saturday, the U.S. Senator rallied with a large crowd of supporters, including actor George Lopez, at Kimball Park in National City.

Bill Clinton was in San Diego Saturday too, holding his own events in support of wife Hillary Clinton’s run for the White House. Clinton rallied with enthusiastic supporters at Bonita Vista High School in Chula Vista Saturday afternoon and then made his way to a campaign fundraiser at The Inn and Rancho Santa Fe.

According to Sanders’ campaign website, the U.S. Senator will make his way north to Irvine, California, on Sunday, too, holding another rally at 6 p.m. at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater.

Meanwhile, additional stops on Clinton’s campaign tour throughout California include Pomona, Bakersfield, Fresno, Stockton, Sacramento and Delano.

According to Hillary Clinton’s campaign website, Bill Clinton’s next stop is in Delano, California, Sunday at Cesar Chavez High School, where he will be joined by civil rights and labor leader Dolores Huerta.

Looking ahead to next week, Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump will make his way to America’s Finest City on Friday, May 27. Trump is set to rally at the San Diego Convention Center in downtown San Diego at 2 p.m. Supporters can register for tickets to Trump’s rally here.
