SDPD Recruits Train at SWAT Academy

$
0
0

For the first time in two years, about 30 officers from several local law enforcement agencies are now training at the San Diego Police Department's (SDPD) Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) academy.

The recruits are primarily SDPD officers and sergeants.

The other recruits include officers with the Harbor Police Department, La Mesa Police Department and Chula Vista Police Department.

Also in training are three firefighters/paramedics with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, who will serve on Special Trauma And Rescue (STAR), if they make it through the academy.

STAR responds to all SDPD SWAT callouts, with an ambulance.

The recruits are going through four rigorous weeks of instruction and training, under the watchful eyes of the SWAT Training Cadre, made up of SWAT ranking officers and the Special Response Team (SRT), SWAT's full-time unit.

The recruits had to pass firearms and physical fitness tests to qualify for the academy. They were also selected based on their service record and after an interview process.

At the current academy, recruits are undergoing advanced training in weapons. They are also being placed in various stressful, tactical scenarios that simulate real-life crises.

Trainers are assessing how they react to those situations.

“We want the ones who can make decisions. And to be good team players. It takes a lot of preparation," said SWAT Commanding Officer Lt. Tina Williams. "So it's a multitude of things to become a good, proficient SWAT officer."

Instructors are also taking note of how the recruits handle physical exhaustion and whether they find the inner strength to carry on.

The SWAT training cadre takes all these factors into consideration when deciding which recruits will graduate from the academy later this month.

SRT has been laying the groundwork for the academy for months.

At Naval Training Center (NTC), the unit began designing and building its own training facility last year – one indoor and one outdoor – so it would be available for the current academy.

"We sat down and designed this for a very long time," said SRT Officer Michael DeWitt. "Everyone worked hard. Everyone put it together. And without the guys on the team, this wouldn't have happened."

For years, SWAT officers have been training at sound stages at Strategic Productions in Kearny Mesa, when they're available, and at a training house at NTC that's shared by other SDPD units and outside agencies.

"Training venues are becoming harder and harder to locate," said Williams. "So this gives us something scheduling wise, we can always have access to."

"We really relied heavily on the guys who have been on the team for a long time, knowing the training deficiencies we can improve on," said DeWitt, who has a background in construction and led the project to build the training facility.

The indoor training house is built as moveable boxes, in different sizes. The furniture and doors can be moved around, so instructors can plan for a number of contingencies.

"If you continue to train on one floor plan, you get to know that floor plan very well and you start losing the benefit of that floor plan because you know which way you should go, and how to take down the problem," said DeWitt. "Real life scenarios we're faced with out in the field, every house is different. By changing the floor plan, that allows us to sharpen our skills, to be prepared for whatever we encounter in the field."

SRT serves high-risk warrants and responds to call-outs, mostly at night, so being able to train in the dark is a big advantage.

"[The indoor training house] enhances our training by allowing us to close all the doors, turn all the lights off, and make it night time hours, or nighttime movement, during the day," DeWitt explained.

SRT is almost finished building the outdoor training house. It's fixed to the ground and has a large layout. Most of the walls are up. After the academy ends, SRT will add on a catwalk.

"There will be places for instructors to observe from above to be able to watch the flow from the whole entire structure," said Williams.

Both the indoor and outdoor training houses are being used during the current academy.

And for the recruits who do graduate later this month, the testing isn't over.

Every six months, all SDPD SWAT officers must re-qualify, by meeting physical and firearms standards.

The department's SWAT officers all work in patrol, and go through regular, specialized training under the guidance of SRT at least once a month, to stay proficient on their skills.

Almost every SWAT callout ends without violence. A lot of that is because of all the training SWAT officers go through to make sure the public, and their fellow officers, are safe.

Cruz Responds to Caitlyn Jenner's Bathroom Break

Sen. Ted Cruz doubled down on his criticism of Donald Trump and others who are against so-called “bathroom bills,” and responded to reality TV star and transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner.

In an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd, Cruz claimed Trump, president Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton want to pass a law “that says any adult man can go into a girls’ restroom if he feels like a woman at that minute.”

Trump was asked on the “Today” show about the legislation — like the one passed in North Carolina last month — and he said Jenner can use any bathroom she wanted at Trump Tower. Jenner took his offer and posted a video to Facebook, and reference Cruz by saying: “By the way Ted, nobody got molested.”

"The real danger is not people who are transgendered. It's people who are predators,” Cruz responded, calling it a “common sense” issue. "People who are predators…use that law as an excuse to go target our kids. And that is a real danger," he said.

San Diego Horse to Race in Kentucky Derby

“It’s like a dream. You wonder if it’s going to happen, but yet it’s almost here.”

Dianne Basher and her husband have never had a horse in the Kentucky Derby before, but on May 7th both of them will watch Danzing Candy race at Churchill Downs.

The Bashers and their partners, Ted and Leslie Aroney of Halo Farms (where Danzing Candy was bred), agree they’ve already won. “More people should get in this business,” Ted Aroney said to laughs from his co-owners.

Danzing Candy, represented as ‘DC’ on hats they had made up for the derby, is an “unbelievable dream” for the foursome.

“When this horse took off and broke his maiden he was something special. He came back and won another allowance race really easy,” Aroney said. “We put him in the Grade two, San Felipe and he won that easy again…So we started really planning what you have to do for the Kentucky Derby.”

The three-year-old colt has won three out of his last five races, including the Santa Felipe Stakes and a fourth place at the Santa Anita Derby.

“Jim’s been around horses since he was 12 years old. He remembers horses that he watched in Santa Anita…He was always around them, but he never owned a horse,” Aroney said of Basher. “Finally…he said I want a derby horse. I said Jim you can’t just get a derby horse. I said there’s 20-some-odd-thousand horses born every year and only 20 get to the derby.”

Having been around horses since he was around 12 himself, Aroney has owned horses for the last 50 years, but after decades of owning this will be his first Kentucky Derby too.

“I think he’s a 20 to 1 longshot bet for the Kentucky Derby,” Aroney said. “Bet on Danzing Candy.”

Danzing Candy will leave San Diego on Monday for a week of training and acclimation before the derby next Saturday.

The Bashers and Aroneys have raced horses in partnership since 2012, but Danzing Candy is their first graded stakes winner as a partnership.

Ariz. Officials Still Pursuing Merritt in Freeway Shootings

Arizona officials said they are still gathering evidence against Leslie Merritt, Jr., who was arrested in connection with 11 shootings that took place over two weeks last summer, NBC News reported.

Prosecutors said they intend to proceed in the case against Merritt, who had been charged in four of the shootings on or near Interstate 10 in the Phoenix area that left drivers on edge. The shootings took place in late August and early September, but authorities say at least one was a “road rage” incident and others may have been copycats. No one was seriously hurt.

"I believe that we have enough evidence to develop probable cause to believe that he is the correct suspect," Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Frank Milstead told reporters Friday. "Our job was to develop probable cause, the county's job is now to build a case beyond a reasonable doubt."

Merritt’s lawyers say he is “100% innocent” and that police made a rush to judgment.

Prosecutors and police this week have faced questions about the investigation and arrest since a judge first reduced Merritt's bail to $0 and ordered him released — and after prosecutors moved to dismiss all charges without prejudice late last week.

Woman, 93, Allegedly Attacked by Caretaker

A 93-year old Oceanside woman was clinging to life Friday after an alleged attack that was all caught on tape.

The man charged with the crime is her best friend's caretaker, William Sutton, 66.

Margaret Wood suffered a broken nose and cracked skull after allegedly being beaten and thrown through her best friend's front door.

Richard Wood says doctors at Tri-City Medical Center told him his mother Margaret needs hospice care.

Granddaughter Lisa Wood and the rest of the family are struggling with the thought these could be Margaret’s final days.

“The last three days, she declined considerably. She looks at you. She's not speaking much at all, and is in a tremendous pain,” she said.

Lisa recovered a video tape recorded April 16 on a security camera next door.

Lisa says the footage shows Sutton pushing Margaret through a screen door. She landed head-first, three steps below on concrete.

Richard says Sutton has been caretaker to Margaret's best friend, 92-year-old Marian Kubic, for the last two years.

The alleged assault happened at Kubic's home, during a visit from Margaret.

“I want justice for my mother. What is a life worth? What's my mother's life worth?” Richard said.

Sutton was arrested on April 17 and is charged with attempted murder and willful cruelty to an elderly adult.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to 14 years in prison. Sutton is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

The San Diego County District Attorney says Sutton was in court Friday for a readiness hearing. A preliminary hearing on this case is scheduled for May 4.

Chargers Finish 2016 Draft Class

$

It’s not often that an NFL team makes a pick in the 6th round of the Draft and an entire fan base lights up with excitement.

But that is exactly what happened on Saturday in San Diego. The Chargers, desperate to find a way to run the ball more efficiently, used the 198th overall pick on Wisconsin fullback Derek Watt. This is a very good idea for a number of reasons.

One is the Bolts needed a true blocking fullback. David Johnson, a converted tight end, tried to fill the role the last two years but his skill set just didn’t translate to the position. Another is Watt already has the trust of Melvin Gordon, the man the Bolts took in last year’s first round as a cure to the running game.

“Melvin and I were really close,” said Watt, who was Gordon’s fullback for three years in Madison. “We came in as freshmen and I really got to know him. We were in the same meeting rooms, we’ve stayed close, and it will be a great time getting out there with him again.”

Gordon set records and was a Heisman Trophy runner-up with Watt’s help. Perhaps that’s why Melvin was actively lobbying the coaching staff to get Derek out to San Diego.

“We already know how each other thinks, we already know what each other sees, and we communicate what we see on the field to each other,” said Watt. “It’ll be great to be back with him.”

Yet another reason to like Watt is he might be the only offensive player in the NFL who’s looking forward to playing against reigning Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt. Derek is J.J.’s little brother and they’ve never played against each other in a game. When the Chargers and Texans meet in Houston in November, neither of the Watt boys will be backing down.

“It might be a stalemate. We might just knock each other out.”

The Chargers added a few more pieces on Saturday. In the 4th round they took Joshua Perry, an inside linebacker from Ohio St. He’s one of the leaders of the Buckeyes defense that won the 2014 national Title and earned the reputation of being a hard-nosed tackler, especially against the run.

In the 5th round the Bolts nabbed Jatavis Brown, the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He was a linebacker at Akron but after running a 4.47 in the 40 scouts started looking at the 222-pounder as a potential safety, a position the Chargers needed to address.

San Diego had two picks in the 6th round. Before taking Watt they grabbed Drew Kaser, a punter from Texas A&M with a monster leg. He had a punt of at least 64 yards in half the Aggies’ games last year. The tough part of that pick is it means the Chargers will be releasing long-time punter Mike Scifres, who has been with the team since 2003 and performed at a Pro Bowl level.

The Chargers rounded out their 2016 class with Donavon Clark, an offensive guard from Michigan St. The 6-foot-4, 315-pounder earned praise for his toughness and intelligence, often having the change positions along the line to fill in for injuries mid-game (where have you heard that before?).

Here is the entirety of the 2016 Chargers Draft class:

Kenya Burns $150M Worth of Ivory

Kenya’s president torched more than a hundred tons of ivory from about 8,000 animals on Saturday, sending a message that trade in animal parts must be stopped, according to NBC News.

"Kenya is making a statement that for us, ivory is worthless unless it is on our elephants," President Uhuru Kenyatta told dignitaries before setting light to the first of almost a dozen pyres.

The ivory piles, which included elephant tusks and rhino horns, would have been worth a fortune to smugglers.

The country, which staged its first such burning in 1989, is seeking a total world ban on ivory sales as poaching poses an increased risk to endangered species. The call for the ban has been backed by Ali Bongo, president of Gabon, which is home to the forest elephant.

A search was underway for a semi-truck driver who apparently detached the cab from its trailer and took off after a deadly hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning in Vernon, California, officials said.

The crash was reported just after 3 a.m. near the intersection of East 37th Street and South Santa Fe Avenue, according to the Vernon Police Department.

Police believe the driver was involved in another minor crash, about a block away from the scene, before running a red light and colliding with the Chevrolet pickup truck.

When rescue crews arrived at the scene, the pickup truck was found lodged underneath the trailer and the cab was missing from the 18-wheeler.

Police said the driver apparently detached his cab from the trailer and took off.

Two people were trapped inside the pickup truck. The driver of the pickup was rescued and taken to USC Medical Center in unknown condition. The second victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Vernon police said.

There was no immediate information regarding the driver of the semi-truck at this time, officials said.

7 Tons of Pot Stashed in Trailer

Authorities discovered more than seven tons of marijuana stashed inside a truck passing through a cargo checkpoint in south San Diego Thursday – a huge haul valued at $7.1 million.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said officers were working at the Otay Mesa cargo facility when, at around 9:40 a.m., a man driving a Freightliner pulling a trailer entered the port of entry for routine inspection.

The Freightliner was alleged carrying a shipment of furniture. However, when a CBP officer referred the driver to another area for a more in-depth inspection, much more was discovered inside the trailer.

Officers ran the truck through the checkpoint’s imaging system, which revealed anomalies with the shipment. Officers opened the trailer and began sifting through the cargo. At that point, they discovered many boxes scattered throughout the trailer.

When officers opened the boxes, they discovered large, wrapped packages that tested positive for marijuana.

Package after package, CBP officers removed a total of 587 packages of pot from the trailer. Combined, the marijuana weighed 14,219 pounds.

The driver — a 47-year-old Mexican citizen — was turned over to agents with Homeland Security Investigations for further processing. The drugs, tractor and trailer were seized by officers.

Otay Mesa cargo port director Rosa Hernandez said this large-scale seizure demonstrates the commitment of her officers to “keeping our community safe from dangerous contraband.”

The Otay Mesa cargo facility is located less than 23 miles south of downtown San Diego.

'Threatened Constantly': Museum Hosts Sexual Assault Workshop

Evelyn Thomas served her country in Army National Guard and the Marines, but when she was stationed at Camp Pendleton the men whom she was supposed to be able to trust with her life betrayed her.

“When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton that’s when I was raped by four Marines when I was outed as a lesbian and I became pregnant,” Thomas said.

Thomas was part of a group of women who joined a military sexual assault advocacy workshop at the American History Theater at the Women’s Museum of California Saturday.

Speakers at the workshop discussed how to file claims, navigate veterans' medical centers and what survivors should expect.

“This is not about being believed or not believed. This is about filling the forms out and following through,” retired veteran’s advocate Susan Avila-Smith said. “They signed a contract saying they would defend the country and part of that contract is ‘we will take care of your medical needs.'”

When Thomas joined in 1986, prior to ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’, gay people like her were not allowed in the military. After her assault when she decided to keep the baby she said the abuse from her unit got worse.

“That’s when a daily emotional, mental and physical abuse started to the point where my body couldn’t deal with it. So my baby was delivered premature and he only lived for one day,” Thomas told NBC 7. “My child was Tajaman Thomas. That’s the name of my son,” Thomas told NBC 7. “This June 14th he would've been 26 years old."

The Department of Defense estimates there were more than 20,000 victims last year alone.

“My child was innocent of this so I advocate for other men and women who do not have the courage yet to begin to share their story,” Thomas explained.

People looking for more information or how to get help can visit Avila-Smith’s website.

Obama Roasts GOP Candidates at WH Correspondents' Dinner

President Barack Obama pulled out the punches during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C., Saturday, taking jabs at the candidates vying for the Republican nomination.

"It is an honor to be here at my last, and perhaps the last White House Correspondents' Dinner," he said, telling the audience how great they looked before getting right down to business.

Obama told the crowd at the 102nd and final dinner that his approval ratings have been rising, even in his final year in office.

“What has changed?” he asked. “No one can figure it out.”

Obama paused, allowing a moment to pass before a split-screen of Sen. Ted Cruz and GOP front-runner Donald Trump popped up on screen.

Obama didn't stop there. He called out top Republicans, who have touted Paul Ryan as a possible nominee, if one can’t be chosen before the GOP convention in July.

"Steak or fish?” he told the audience, referring to the choice on the evening’s menu. “A whole bunch of you wrote Paul Ryan. You may not like steak or fish, but that’s your choice.“

Ryan has said he will not seek the nomination.

Obama wasted no time cutting into the three GOP candidates, saying “some candidates aren’t polling high enough to qualify for their own joke” over a photo of Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

“And then there’s Ted Cruz,” he said, calling out the Texas senator for a mistake he made this week in Indiana when he referred to a basketball hoop as a “ring.”

"What else is in his lexicon? Baseball sticks? Football hats? But sure, I’m the foreign one,” Obama said, before moving on to an absent Trump.

"Is this dinner too tacky for 'The Donald'?"

Trump’s absence “hurt” Obama, who said he “had so much fun last time.” Obama has singled out the real estate mogul in previous years, making fun of Trump's hair and the businessman's quest to see Obama's birth certificate.

“Is he at home eating a Trump steak?” Obama asked. “What’s he doing?”

The president went on, making jabs at Trump's lack of foreign policy and experience, and his real estate prowess.

"There's one area where Donald's experience could be valuable. And that's closing Guantanamo, because Trump knows a thing or two about closing waterfront properties into the ground."

A group of armed robbers are wanted for two muggings in the El Cajon and La Mesa area in the early morning hours of Friday, police said.

A man was robbed about a half mile from his work on the 4600 block of Palm Avenue near Finley just after midnight Friday La Mesa Police said.

Four men with bandanas covering their faces rounded a corner, two with guns drawn making a demand, investigators said.

The victim’s cell phone and clothes he had in a computer case were stolen.

Police believe the same criminals may be responsible for a similar crime in El Cajon around 2 a.m.

"That’s so sketchy,” said La Mesa resident Jessica Williams. “But when I close and I have to walk home at night now, I’m probably not going to be by myself anymore.”

Two of the suspects in the La Mesa robbery were described as wearing all black clothing, one was wearing jeans, another shorts. It’s believed they’re about 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches and around 16 to 20 years old.

Two similar robberies happened last month in La Mesa, according to police. But investigators don’t believe they’re related to these latest crimes.

Baghdad Protesters Disperse After Green Zone Breach

Protesters who attacked security forces and stormed the parliament in Iraq's capital disbanded Sunday, shortly after Iraq's prime minister ordered the arrest of the demonstrators whose actions sparked a state of emergency, NBC News reports.

Roads to and from Baghdad had reopened after security forces secured the breach of the heavily fortified Green Zone.

The protesters, who were responding to popular Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's call to pressure the government to introduce reforms, left the parliament building on Saturday night and were holding a sit-in at the Saddam-era Grand Festivities Square, but retreated Sunday at al-Sadr's prompting.

Iraq has been mired in a political crisis for months, hindering the government's ability to combat ISIS — which still controls much of the country's north and west — or address a financial crisis largely prompted by the plunge in global oil prices.

San Diego Scientists Discover Why Some Sharks Glow

$

0

San Diego researchers have discovered that some sharks use their flourescent glow to communicate with other sharks deep under water, and their research has provided some really cool images to show how it works.

Scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, working with experts at the American Museum of Natural History, used a custom-built "shark eye" camera to do the research.

"This study provides the first evidence that sharks can see the fluorescence of their own species," said Dimitri Deheyn, a researcher at Scripps and coauthor of the study. "It's not just beautiful but has an ecological purpose."

How does it all work?

Well, people and other land animals live in a full-color environment, but fish live in a world that's mostly blue, because water quickly absorbs most of the visible light spectrum the deeper you go. The research team figured out that many fish absorb that remaining blue light, and then re-emit it in neon colors of greens, reds and oranges.

Then researchers were able to take their findings a step further. They designed a camera that could capture that flourescent light and they were able to capture a hidden universe.

They focused on two catsharks: chain catsharks and swellsharks.

The scientists went on a number of expeditions at Scripps Canyon in San Diego County. They observed swellsharks in their native habitat, about 100-feet underwater. The team stimulated biofluorescence during night dives with high-intensity blue lights in watertight cases.

The research team recorded the activity (which you can't see with the human eye) using the custom-built underwater camera. The camera had different sets of filters.

"The set of filters we used for the shark-eye had similar effects as if using yellow filters to see fluorescence, as commonly done by divers," Deheyn told NBC7. "The shark eye filter set is just more finely tuned to match the data collected from the eye."

The scientists mathematically modeled the images from the camera, and found that the contrast of the patterns on the biofluorescent sharks increases with depth. That suggests the animals can not only see the light, but are also probably using it to communicate with one another.

"This is one of the first papers on biofluorescence to show this connection, and a big step toward a functional explanation for fluorescence in fishes," said John Sparks, a curator in the American Museum of Natural History's Department of Ichthyology and a co-author on the paper.

The study was recently published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Donald Trump holds a 15-point lead over Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the potentially decisive May 3 presidential primary race in Indiana, according to results from a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll.

Trump gets support from 49 percent of likely Republican primary voters in the state, followed by Cruz at 34 percent and John Kasich at 13 percent. If that margin holds on Tuesday, Trump would be on path towards obtaining the 1,237 delegates he needs to win the GOP nomination on a first ballot at the GOP convention in July.

According to the poll, 58 percent of likely Republican primary voters in Indiana say they disapprove of Cruz and Kasich teaming up to beat Trump in the state.

Meanwhile, in the Hoosier State's Democratic contest, Hillary Clinton leads Bernie Sanders by just four points, 50 percent to 46 percent.
