Man Dies While Saving Daughter

A Northern California family is mourning after a father died while trying to save his daughter.

Police said 43-year-old Jim Tramel, of Burlingame, was at a family gathering in Palm Springs Sunday when he noticed his 9-year-old daughter was getting shocked while swimming in a pool.

Witnesses said Tramel's daughter was turning blue, which is when he jumped in to save her and was electrocuted. He died a short time later at Desert Regional Medical Center.

Police said Tramel's daughter remains in critical condition at a Loma Linda hospital. A 6-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl and a 45-year-old woman were all treated and released from the hospital Sunday for related injuries.

Authorities are still trying to figure out how the incident happened. Investigators suspect faulty pool wiring sent electricity surging through the water.

"When we found out it was electrocution in a pool we were stunned, and we were very sad," neighbor Scott Aaronson said. "It's very unusual to hear this kind of news.

Tramel worked for several Bay Area tech companies. Most recently, he was a vice president of sales for RevJet in San Carlos.

RevJet CEO Mitchell Weisman created a GoFundMe page for Tramel. Donations for Tramel's family late Tuesday reached more than $93,000.

NFL Releases the Official 2016 NFL Draft Order

The 2016 NFL Draft is less than a month away. Tuesday morning the NFL released the official 2016 NFL Draft order. The Chargers own at least one pick in each round of the draft order but what will they do with these opportunities. In free agency the Chargers acquired a few key players on defense but still haven't really addressed the holes on the offensive line. The Bolts have the third overall pick in the first round and most will agree that they need beef up the front. Here are a few of the players that could fill that void plus some thoughts on defense.

Offensive Tackle

Laremy Tunsil out of Ole Miss and Notre Dame’s Rodney Stanley; two solid tackles worthy of the 3rd pick who can offer Philip Rivers the protection he needs. Tunsil is poised to be the top pick in the draft especially after his performance at Ole Miss pro day. Not only does he have tremendous footwork but this guy is a tank. He can put up 34 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Yeah, I’d want him protecting me. It’s likely the Tennessee Titans will nab him, but stranger things have happened during the draft.

Right now, Notre Dame’s Rodney Stanley is slated as the number two tackle available after Tunsil. Tunsil may play a little meaner, but Stanley is definitely solid. He’s a three year starter with 13 starts at right tackle in 2013 and 27 starts at left tackle in the last two seasons. The Detroit Lions are likely to pick him up, but hey, I’m saying there’s a chance.

Weddle’s Spot

With Eric Weddle (and his beard) now out of the Chargers’ picture, the Bolts have a unique hole to fill on defense. Jalen Ramsey out of Florida State is similar to Weddle in terms of style of play but is a much bigger guy who can still run around and make plays while adding that competitive grit. He’s certainly one of, if not the best DB coming into this draft, in my opinion.

Round One is Thursday April 28. Rounds Two and Three are April 29, and the draft concludes on April 30.

A roaring fire spread to five row houses in Brooklyn Tuesday night, injuring 11 people and leaving many more without homes.

The fire was first reported at 9:51 p.m. at a apartment building on DeKalb Avenue, between Wilson and Knickbocker avenues, in Bushwick.

By 10:30 p.m., five buildings had ignited, sending massive flames erupting into the sky.

Eleven people were injured, although seven refused medical attention, officials said. The remaining four people were taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. One suffered serious injuries and the remaining three, including a firefighter, had minor injuries.

Residents from around the area gathered to watch the fire, as dozens of firefighters and numerous fire trucks pulled hoses and equipment towards the flaming homes.

One video shows two firefighters silhouetted by flames and smoke as they stand on top of a row house.

Black smoke could be seen rising high above Brooklyn in a drone video captured by Winson Yuan.

A resident named Marilyn was with the Red Cross as fire crews started to get the fire under control around 11 p.m. She said she had gone to the store when she got a call from her husband and son saying that their house was on fire.

"I ran in and all the smoke just came into us," she said. "I burst out crying because I lost everything in my house."

Marilyn managed to save her birds as the flames quickly spread through her home. She said it only took moments for all that she owned to be destroyed.

"I feel like my life went downhill. Coming home from work. Going upstairs. Being sick and trying to relax. I come back to having no house, no home, no nothing," she said.

Smoke was still pouring from the row houses around 11:30 p.m. The fire was brought completely under control around 1 a.m.

The smoke and ash could still be smelled Wednesday morning.

Marilyn heard that the fire may have started in a church at the back of one of the row houses, although that' has not been confirmed.

'Absurd': Ex-Teacher Denies Trying to Buy Pot From Student

A former North County teacher, accused of buying pot from a student, wants San Diego Police to destroy any record of his arrest.

“To be accused of a crime trying to buy drugs from a student is absurd. It struck me to the core,” Miles Brown told NBC 7 San Diego.

Brown, 34, was arrested on February 26 at Canyon Crest Academy on suspicion of soliciting marijuana from a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to the SDPD.

Police said investigators were initially looking into allegations against a couple students, but they soon discovered some communication between a teacher -- Brown -- and a student.

The communication led them to believe Brown was soliciting marijuana from a student, officials said.

Brown said he had never been in trouble before and did not understand the charges against him.

“This was nonsense and I couldn’t explain it but I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong,” he said.

Brown ended up losing his job as a history teacher and lacrosse coach at Canyon Crest Academy.

An email from the student's family attorney said the student admitted to police in front of her mom that she sent the texts to herself:

“She told the police department that all of the text messages were fabricated, that they were fake, and simply put she was trying to impress her friends.

Brown has not been charged with any crime. The San Diego County District Attorney's Office tells NBC 7 the case remains under review.

The San Dieguito Union High School District said Brown resigned from teaching and coaching following the arrest.

Brown is asking that the police record of his arrest be destroyed, creating a finding of factual innocence.

Transgender Man Sues Barbershop

A transgender man is suing a Southern California barbershop that allegedly refused to cut his hair after the barber identified him as a woman.

Rose Trevis said Hawleywood's barbershop in Long Beach refused him service, saying it did not serve women. The barbershop claimed it had a policy that did not allow for women's haircuts and said it had the right to refuse services to anyone, according to the lawsuit.

"I felt very upset, I guess discriminated against," Trevis said. "I was surprised. We're in 2016. ... It was very embarrassing."

The owner of the shop didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.

This is the second such case of alleged discrimination from a barbershop refusing service to women. In Rancho Cucamonga, another barbershop refused service to a transgender male. Staff at the Rancho Cucamonga barbershop said their religion kept them from cutting women's hair.

The transgender customers were told to leave in both cases.

Trevis' attorney said it's illegal in California to discriminate based on gender or sexual orientation.

Airbag Recall Could Cost Takata $24 Billion

Japan's Takata Corp. could face about $24 billion in costs to recall its airbag inflators in a worst case scenario, Bloomberg news reported, sending its shares tumbling to an all-time low.

A scenario involving the withdrawal of all airbag inflators made by Takata containing ammonium nitrate — the explosive chemical used in potentially faulty air bags at the centre of a global recall — would affect 287.5 million inflators, Bloomberg quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying.

The figure exceeds industry estimates that Takata could face a recall bill of more than $3.5 billion and dwarfs the company's current assets of about $1.3 billion as of December.

Shares in Takata plunged by their daily limit to give the struggling company a market value of just $302 million.

Prince William Rescues Oblivious Patient in Helicopter

It's not every day that a future king swoops in by helicopter to rescue you.

Arborist Jim Schembri was injured when a branch collapsed, leaving him with a dislocated shoulder and hip, NBC News reported.

Schembri's injuries were serious enough to require the assistance of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, an emergency medical service that employs the second-in-line to the British throne as a pilot.

But when Prince William came to the 37-year-old's aid, he almost didn't notice.

"It wasn't until they were actually loading me into the helicopter that it clicked," Schembi told NBC News' British partner ITV.

The prince, whose official title is the Duke of Cambridge, donates his salary from the East Anglian Air Ambulance to charity. He started the job in July.

NJ Transit Twitter Account Hacked

A pro-ISIS Twitter account published a list of New Jersey Transit officers' names and personal information, encouraging supporters to carry out "lone wolf" attacks on them, according to sources and published reports.

The group known as the Caliphate Cyber Army (CCA) first released the personal details of 55 officers in early March after hacking into the NJ Transit police website, Newsweek reported. The newsmagazine saw the list of personal details, which included home addresses, phone numbers, names and ranks.

The Twitter account that linked out to the list has since been suspended, but another tweet referencing the list was sent Monday, sources told NBC 4 New York. It's not clear who sent the tweet.

The original file was uploaded to an Arabic-language file sharing site on March 2 and was downloaded 300 times by March 5, the Daily Mail reports

In a statement, NJ Transit spokeswoman Lisa Torbic said the agency's information system was not compromised, "however some information was breached from an outside vendor."

"The New Jersey Transit Police Department is working with the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI on this matter," she added.

The FBI said it was aware of the situation and providing assistance to the New Jersey Transit Police Department.

Sources told NBC 4 New York they do not believe there is any credible threat.

The hacking attacks have been described as unsophisticated, and experts monitoring the CCA site told Newsweek they show the group has limited technical skill sets.

But, as the quoted expert pointed out, "their activities shine a light on just how vulnerable websites are out there."

Tenants: Storm-Damaged Roof Led to Fire in El Cajon

A fire started on a cold night inside an El Nino-storm damaged home spread to the roof and threatened nearby homes, tenants told NBC 7 San Diego.

The fire started inside the home on El Rey Court at approximately 8:40 p.m. Monday. At one point, flames shot 40 feet above the house.

Heartland Fire crews were able to contain the fire despite unusually strong winds, heavy vegetation and limited space between homes.

On Tuesday, NBC 7 San Diego caught up with tenants who say they are struggling to recover items from inside the home.

"If it's not melted from the fire, it's damaged by the water," said Frankie Kelchner.

Kelchner moved into the home five months ago and shares the rent with four other tenants. He said on a cold Monday night, they decided to light a fire in the fireplace.

Kelchner saw smoke in the hallway and went downstairs outside to investigate and heard a neighbor yelling "Fire, fire" and saw the roof glowing.

He went back in and yelled for everyone to get out. Everyone escaped without injury.

In January, the ceiling collapsed after unusually heavy rainfall. The residents say the property management company covered the roof with a tarp.

The tenants showed NBC 7 an email from the property management company explaining that the earliest possible roof repairs would be in June 2016.

NBC 7 reached out to the property management company for a response but did not receive one by the time this story aired.

Roommate April Shiner reached out to NBC 7 saying the only clothes they had were the ones they were wearing.

"I don't even know where to start," Shiner told us.

She has set up an online fundraising page to help the group with expenses.

Donald Trump's campaign manager seized the spotlight from his boss Tuesday when he was charged with misdemeanor battery related to an alleged altercation with a female reporter.

The incident involving Corey Lewandowski, who will apparently remain on Trump's team, has significantly raised the profile of the operative directing the presidential campaign of the leading Republican candidate, NBC News reported.

The 41-year-old — who has spent much of his professional life challenging the Republican Party establishment — is exactly the type of person Trump values, said Ryan Williams, a political strategist who has known Lewandowski since 2009.

Lewandowski, however, had a vastly different upbringing from Trump, who grew up wealthy.

Lewandowski was born in Lowell, a blue-collar town in eastern Massachusetts where he also went to college.

Driver Plows Into Bay Terraces Home

A Bay Terraces resident woke up early Wednesday morning to the loud impact of a car slamming into her home – specifically the wall of her bedroom.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said a driver plowed through a fence in the 400 block of Arroyo Seco just before 1 a.m., hit exterior wall of the rear part of a home and then flipped his car, landing in that resident’s backyard.

When SDPD officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the wrecked vehicle upside down in the woman’s yard. The sliding glass door to the woman’s home was shattered and debris from the crash was strewn about her property. The wooden fence was in pieces.

The driver was gone.

Officers searched the neighborhood for the driver and found a disheveled man at a residence just a few homes away from the crash site. The man appeared to be injured, police said.

That man was detained for questioning and then taken to a local hospital. As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the driver was still being treated for minor injuries and had not been arrested in connection with the crash. The investigation is ongoing, but police do not believe alcohol was a factor.

Police said the woman sleeping inside the home on Arroyo Seco was not harmed in the collision.

Cleaning up the mess in the woman’s yard proved challenging, and three tow trucks were used to remove the wreck from the backyard while avoiding damaging the home any further.

Rubio Seeks to Keep Delegates for Contested Convention

Even though Sen. Marco Rubio suspended his campaign, the former GOP presidential candidate is attempting to keep every delegate he won while running for president.

The move is unusual and, according to NBC News, it reflects preparations for a contested convention this summer for the GOP.

Rubio's decision came as Donald Trump backed away from an earlier pledge to support the Republican party's nominee if he is treated unfairly after winning more delegates than his rivals.

Rubio aide Alex Burgos told MSNBC that while the Florida senator is "no longer a candidate," he "wants to give voters a chance to stop Trump."

San Diego: The Next Silicon Valley?

Technology companies on the move are increasingly looking to set down roots in San Diego, and a new study now shows why.

The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation released a study Tuesday, ranking the City of San Diego 7th among the top 50 U.S. metros in software development and a top destination for tech talent wanting to relocate.

“The study shows that San Diego is not just a good place, it is a great place to do business,” San Diego City Councilmember Mark Kersey said at a press conference Tuesday.

It also shows San Diego's software industry impacts more than 100,000 jobs, with a total economic impact of $12.2 billion.

“By moving to an area like this you kind of get to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond,” Bizness Apps CEO and Founder Andrew Gazdecki said.

Over the last several weeks Gazdecki’s company has been moving out of Silicon Valley in San Francisco--what many might consider to be the home of the tech startup--and moving down to La Jolla.

“It's not easy to do, but long term there, are so many competitive advantages to making a move like this,” Gazdecki said. Some of the advantages include less traffic and lower cost of living than San Francisco.

But Gazdeki said the real lifeblood of any company is the talent. And so far Gazdeki and his team have not been disappointed in San Diego.

“The talent’s here and so we've begun hiring people,” he said.

In fact, the new study shows San Diego ranks 8th among the top 50 U.S. metros for talent, showing that San Diego’s universities are producing qualified employees who want to stay in the city.

“San Diego is a magnet that attracts and maintains talent,” Stacy Mendes said. “There is a sense of accelerated growth in our tech ecosystem.”

Mendes is the vice president of culture at Underground Elephant. The software development company was founded in San Diego eight years ago and it’s only growing. In the coming weeks, employees will enjoy a new and bigger workplace downtown.

“It's beautiful out here, there's no reason not to be here,” said Nick Knol, a software developer. Knol went from working in Boston to Chicago and now to San Diego where he works at Underground Elephant. “We’re ready for a lot of explosive growth so it's really exciting.”

In short, the study shows what companies like Underground Elephant have always known and what companies moving in like Bizness Apps are learning—that now is a good time to build a technology company or join a technology company in San Diego.

Oceanside Man Charged in Doctor's Family Killings

An Oceanside man has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the killings of a Chinese herbalist and his family, including the couple's 5-year-old daughter.

Pierre Haobsh was charged Tuesday with murder with special circumstances, which gives prosecutors the option of seeking the death penalty, if not life in prison should he be convicted.

Santa Barbara County prosecutors haven't decided whether to seek capital punishment; they likely will decide that after Haobsh's preliminary hearing.

Haobsh is jailed and it's unclear whether he has a lawyer.

Prosecutors say the 27-year-old Oceanside man shot Dr. Weidong "Henry" Han, his wife and daughter in their multimillion-dollar home on the outskirts of Santa Barbara. Their bodies were found wrapped in plastic on Wednesday evening.

An autopsy performed this week showed all three died from gunshot wounds to the head.

Han ran a well-known herbal clinic in Santa Barbara for 25 years.

Authorities say the two men had been involved in a business deal and financial gain could have been a motive in the slayings.

The criminal complaint against Haobsh alleges the murder was premeditated, that he was "lying in wait" to commit the crime and that it was performed for financial gain.

Two days after sheriff's deputies found the family members' bodies in their garage, they tracked down Haobsh driving in unincorporated San Diego County at about 12:30 a.m. Friday. They followed him to a gas station in Bonsall, where he was arrested at gunpoint.

Haobsh lives with his father on Sunglow Drive in Oceanside, a community about 40 miles north of downtown San Diego and approximately 190 miles south of Goleta.

He has no prior criminal history.
