Sanders Wants More Democratic Debates

0
0

Bernie Sanders echoed his previous concerns Sunday, saying he wants more Democratic debates.

In an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he affirmed his concern that Hillary Clinton would not debate him anymore. There are no debates scheduled before the April 19th New York Democratic primary.

"I do have a little bit of concern about that. But I certainly would like to see a debate in New York State,” he told host Chuck Todd.

The DNC, however, lists tentative debates in April and May on their website and Clinton's campaign specifically agreed to debating in New York.

Someone offended by Donald Trump's presidential campaign took action this weekend to symbolically bury his aspirations.

A tombstone displaying the name "Trump" below a cross surfaced in Central Park in the vicinity of the Tavern on the Green. The stone for "Donald J." adds the presidential candidate's year of birth -- 1946 -- but no date of death.

The epitaph on the gravestone: "Made America Hate Again."

Photos of the tombstone popped up on Instagram, Twitter and several websites.

The headstone was removed by Sunday evening.

There were no clues as to who placed it there, but a spokesperson at the city Parks Department said its workers hauled the gravestone away.

Mexico’s federal police said the chief money launderer for notorious drug lord Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán has been detained in southern Mexico, according to NBC News.

In a statement Sunday, police said Juan Manuel Alvarez was captured in Oaxaca City "without firing a single shot."

Police described Manuel Alvarez as "the main operator of money laundering" in the Sinaloa cartel, which has been led for decades by Guzmán.

Guzmán, who was first arrested in the early 1990s, has twice absconded from Mexican prisons. He tunneled out of a maximum security prison last July and was recaptured in January.

College Explores Homelessness in New Play

In a new original play Mesa College explores homelessness in San Diego.

The project began as a partnership with Father Joe Villages and was created from student interviews conducted over a period of a year.

UN-SHELTERED, originally a series of monologues chronicling different experiences of living on the street, the show has been entirely rewritten into a fully dramatized play.

Written and directed by Sheldon Deckelbaum, a teacher in the Mesa drama program, the story follows several people suffering through homelessness – all based off of true stories.

“What makes this play so riveting, inspiring and oftentimes funny is the sheer humanity of the people whose stories we were fortunate enough to capture,” Deckelbaum said. “Their struggles, hopes, dreams and failings transcend homelessness to remind us that, whatever our circumstances, we human beings share much in common.”

The play will be staged outside on the loading dock adjacent to the Apolliad Theater and is performed by students in Deckelbaum’s experimental theater class.

“Theatre takes place in a special time and space that permits us to enter worlds otherwise unseen or ignored," Deckelbaum added. "UN-SHELTERED offers a unique glimpse into the sometimes unseen and frequently ignored world of homelessness,”

Some of the shows will close with a discussion with the cast, staff from Father Joe's Villages and a few of the people whose real-life stories are in the play.

UN-SHELTERED runs from Tuesday, April 12, through Sunday, April 17. All performances start at 6:30 p.m. General Admission tickets are $10; students with identification, $5.

The play is set on the loading dock area on the north side of the Apolliad Theatre (Building C-100). Paid parking is adjacent to A-Overflow lot.

Seating includes both picnic blankets on the ground and chairs on the loading dock. Chair seating is available if requested in advance and there is seating and access for disabled people.

Suspected DUI Crash Causes Major Injuries

A woman in her 30s allegedly smoking marijuana hit two people, a 49-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, in a 1956 Porsche Sunday authorities confirmed.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Pomerado Road between Caminito Alto and Sycamore Test Road  in Scripps Ranch.

The woman, who was driving a Toyota Corolla, was heading eastbound on Pomerado road. Traffic investigators said she veered out of the eastbound lane into the left turn lane at Caminito Alto. She then drove over the raised median into oncoming traffic colliding nearly head on into the Porsche in the westbound lane.

The Porsche has only lap seat belts and no airbags.

The woman's injuries are minor, but both people in the Porsche have major injuries. All three have been transported to the hospital.

"The force of the collision was horrific and caused incredibly serious injuries to both passengers that were in the Porsche," one official told NBC 7.

Authorities found a marijuana pipe inside the corolla and told NBC 7 the bowl was still hot to the touch after the crash.

"Drugs and vehicles don't mix," Sgt. Kerry Mensior of SDPD Traffic Division said. "Alcohol and cars don't mix, marijuana and cars doesn't mix. So please just pay attention to that so that somebody who's out on the road literally for an Easter Sunday drive doesn't have to have this tragedy impact their life."

Once the Corolla driver is released from the hospital she will be arrested for DUI authorities said.

At least 72 people were killed, including 36 children, and more than 320 others were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up Sunday evening in a children's park in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province, NBC News reported.

Lahore police Chief Haider Ashraf said the park was busier than usual as local Christians marked Easter Sunday. Many of the victims had lined up to buy train tickets when the blast erupted.

Speaking at the mortuary, rescue worker Pervez Nazir told NBC News that the dead included 36 children. Only 10 were Christian, with the other 26 Muslims.

A splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaatul Ahrar (TTP-JA), claimed responsibility for the attack.

"We didn't want to kill women and children. Our targets were male members of the Christian community," TTP-JA spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told NBC News from an undisclosed location while using an Afghan cell number.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Superintendent Cindy Marten kicked off the ‘Play All Day’ initiative Friday by ceremonially unlocking the gate to the first first of 30 new joint-use parks to join the 76 agreements already in effect.

The unlocking was part of a dedication ceremony for the Wegeforth Elementary School Joint-Use Park in the Serra Mesa Community.

For the last six decades the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) has maintained 76 joint-use parks with the City of San Diego for turf play fields and recreation facilities. Schools can use the facilities during school hours and the community can use them after school and during school breaks.

All 76 parks will be open during spring break for kids to use and play.

During his State of the City address in January, Mayor Faulconer announced an initiative to break ground or upgrade 50 parks over the next five years, and 30 of these parks will be shared city/school parks that remain open for community residents after the school day ends.

The upgraded park at Wegeforth Elementary opened with $3.2 million in improvements, including a turfed sports field, running track, designated parking area, security lighting and more.

Wealthy Women Drive Wave of Luxe Travel

Rising numbers of female millionaires and billionaires throughout the world may be contributing to a rise in luxury health and wellness holidays and women-only hotel services, NBC News.

The number of females with ultra-high net worth — those with net assets of $30 million or more, excluding their primary residences (aka, really rich people) — is increasing faster than their male counterparts, encouraging travel agencies, hotels and tour operators to focus on their interests. These include holidays that focus on "wellness" and can be combined with business or voluntary work, according to data provider, WealthInsight.

"Interviews and secondary research show that spas, yoga, meditation, health and wellness are appealing to female UHNWI," Roselyn Lekdee, economist at WealthInsight, told CNBC.

San Diego Now Looking to Build 2 New Stadiums

0
0

The Chargers finally have their new Downtown Stadium plan to a point where they can unveil to the public. According to sources close to the process the Bolts will make their grand presentation early next week, either Tuesday, 3/29 or Wednesday, 3/30, so they can start the clock on their quest to get a new initiative on the November ballot.

The Bolts will likely be trying to push through a so-called “Convadium,” a new stadium combined with a convention center expansion in the East Village. If they are successful they would leave vacant the current Mission Valley site that houses Qualcomm Stadium. Here, as the saying goes, is where the plot thickens.

Chargers Special Counsel Mark Fabiani has said the Bolts will be working with other business entities, among them JMI Realty. You may recall JMI is part of the business empire of former Padres owner John Moores, who is also a benefactor of San Diego State University (the Moores family made a large contribution to the school to build Tony Gwynn Stadium).

SDSU has voiced an interest in potentially developing the Mission Valley site if it ever became available. Apparently somebody knows something that the rest of us don’t know because in an interesting bit of timing, JMI Realty has already set up an event to reveal its plans for a new SDSU West Campus that will include a brand new, “boutique” stadium.

Part of the official posting on the website www.eventbrite.com describes the event like this:

“A few years ago, John Moores, ex-Padre owner and SDSU benefactor, and his JMI team began envisioning a redeveloped sports, education and business complex at the Qualcomm Stadium site in Mission Valley.  Now, as the Chargers work to develop a downtown San Diego football stadium, the JMI team, working in concert with Cisterra Development, another prominent San Diego developer, will unveil their proposal to develop the Qualcomm Stadium site into a civic gem that all SDSU alumni and San Diego County residents will claim proudly.”

It’s expected the proposed new stadium will be in the 30,000-40,000 seat range and also be available to host a MLS franchise, something Moores has been trying to bring to San Diego for more than a decade. Major League Soccer’s desire to have smaller and more modern stadiums for its teams was the biggest road block to outdoor professional soccer coming to San Diego.

The program will take place on Tuesday, April 5, starting at 7:30 a.m. at SDSU Montezuma Hall (5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182). Breakfast will run from 7:30-8:00 (tickets to the event are $35 each) then the presentation runs from 8:00-9:00, followed by a half-hour Q & A session. It’s expected during this meeting the speakers will present artistic renderings of the entire proposed space, from the stadium to the educational expansion. It is unknown if a financing plan will also be revealed.

Those speakers include:

John Kratzer, President and CEO of JMI Realty
Steven Black, Chairman of Cisterra Development
Steve Peace, Political Consultant
Dennis Cruzan, Founding Partner of Cruzan
Vincent Mudd, Managing Principal of Carrier Johnson

It’s interesting that Peace will be presenting. He is also deeply involved with the Chargers on their Downtown “Convadium” idea and will be among those working to explain and drum up support for the plan. His presence suggests the JMI idea for Mission Valley is directly related to the Chargers’ attempt to build a new NFL-caliber facility in Downtown San Diego.

NYC Man Killed in Brussels Was Married to Ex-Ambassador's Daughter

One of the two New York City-based siblings who died in last Tuesday's terror attacks in Brussels was married to the daughter of a former U.S. Ambassador, it was revealed Monday.

Alexander Pinczowski was married to Cameron Cain, daughter of Jim Cain, the former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Ambassador Cain said in an interview with Savannah Guthrie on NBC's "Today" Monday morning. Cain did not know until Tuesday that Pinczowski and his daughter had indeed been married.

"The bright spot of the week was that Cameron told us Tuesday night, as she was huddled with us in her apartment in New York, that, in fact, two years ago she and Alex...had gotten married actually in New York," he said.

Thirty-five people were killed in twin bombings at the airport and in another blast at a subway station. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Alexander Pinczowski had traveled to Brussels airport on Tuesday and was about to check in for a flight back to New York with his sister, Sascha, around the time the two blasts went off, officials said.

Relatives told a Dutch newspaper that the Dutch siblings called them around the time of the attack and that they heard a blast and shattering glass before the line went dead. They said they have been unable to reach the siblings since then.

Pinczowski had traveled to Holland to work on a craft-related business that he and Cameron were going to start together, Cain told NBC News.

The couple met six years ago while taking summer courses in Durham, North Carolina, Cain said.

He called Alexander "intimidatingly smart, a brilliant young man."

Sascha Pinczowski, 26, was a 2015 graduate of Marymount Manhattan College in New York with a degree in business. She spent last summer as an intern at a catering company, Shiraz Events.

Brussels Terror Attacks: Death Toll Climbs to 35

Brussels was preparing to honor terror victims with an interfaith memorial Monday after a weekend of raids across Europe aimed at signaling stepped-up cooperation following carnage in the Belgian capital, NBC News reported.

The toll from the bombings climbed to 35 early Monday after four of those wounded in the suicide bombings last week have died in the hospital, Belgian health minister said.

Meanwhile, several suspects were in custody from Belgium to Italy and the Netherlands, picked up as part of a spree of searches carried out over the weekend. Three were charged with terror offenses though it was not explicitly clear if they were linked to any particular attack.

Only one person — Faycal Cheffou — has been charged specifically in relation to the Brussels bombings, but it was still not clear what role investigators they believe he played in the attacks.

Off-Duty Deputy Shoots Man Who Ran Over 2 Deputies: SDSO

Three Sheriff's deputies and one driver were injured following an early morning deputy-involved shooting incident in Vista, officials said.

The incident happened at approximately 1:59 a.m. Sunday morning at East Vista and Palomar Place in Vista, San Diego Sheriff's officials (SDSO) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers said.

SDSO Lt. Kenneth Nelson told NBC 7 San Diego the incident began when several men were fighting in the 7/11 parking lot on the 1500 block of East Vista Way. Officials said the people were involved in an altercation near a parked vehicle in front of the store.

Three off-duty Sheriff's deputies happened to be in the shopping center nearby and came over to de-escalate the situation and break up the fight, Nelson said.

A 32-year-old man driving a Nissan Altima put his car in reverse, completely running over one deputy and knocking another on the hood of the car, Nelson said. Nelson said the driver, identified as Alejandro Blanco, is being booked on multiple counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Blanco switched from reverse to forward drive, accelerating toward the third deputy, Nelson said. That's when the off-duty deputy fired his revolver multiple times, hitting the driver twice, Nelson said.

The driver and all three deputies suffered non life-threatening injuries. It is unclear where the driver was hit by the bullets and what specific injuries all involved suffered. The injured were taken to local hospitals.

The deputies involved have not been identified by SDSO officials.

SDSO officials say they are still interviewing people and investigating the incident. It is unclear what exactly happened during the incident. It is unclear if the deputies presented badges at any point during the incident or if the gun discharged was the deputy's personal or work-issued gun.

Neighbors in the area described how they woke up to gunshots.

"I heard a lady and some man arguing over something and suddenly I heard some gun shots," said Armando Sosa, a neighbor.

"I was thrown back by everything. I didn't think it was this big of a deal because I always hear gun shots," said Linda Garcia, a neighbor.

The SDSO's Homicide Unit is investigating. They investigate all deputy-involved shooting, whether or not someone died. SDSO officials have also notified the FBI Civil Rights Division, a new protocol recently put into place, Nelson said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Homicide Detail at (858) 974-2321/after hours at (858) 565-5200. You can also remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

No further information was immediately available.

The remains of a U.S. Marine from Temecula killed by an ISIS rocket fired in Iraq were returned to Riverside County in a somber welcome on Saturday.

Staff Sgt. Louis F. Cardin died last week in northern Iraq from wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with rocket fire at a base in northern Iraq, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. He was serving in Operation Inherent Resolve, which is the military's campaign against the Islamic State.

Cardin's body was flown to March Air Reserve Base and then escorted by local law enfocement officials to a funeral home in Hemet. A sea of red, white and blue lined the streets during a procession to show respect for the fallen marine.

"It's nice to see this kind of support for military," said Jared Brummet, who is on active duty in the Navy.

"To bring one home like this very moving and sad," said one supporter said during the tribute.

A private memorial was also scheduled Saturday afternoon.

SSgt Cardin, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, enlisted in the Marine Corps upon graduating from Chaparral High School in 2006.

He served 10 years in the Marine Corps, including three previous deployments to Afghanistan and one to Iraq. The 27-year-old comes from a military family; both of his grandfathers served and one of his brothers was in the Army.

Cardin will be honored at a public service at Temecula City Hall at 41000 Main Street from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday. He is scheduled to be interred at Riverside National Cemetery.

The last U.S. service member killed in Iraq was in October 2015.

An out-of-control SUV slammed into a building Monday in San Diego, striking a parked car and snapping a power line.

The force of a collision between the SUV and a nearby car snapped the power line near 26th Street and between Imperial and Commercial in the Grant Hill neighborhood.

San Diego Police say the driver of the gray GMC refused to pull over for officers around midnight.

A passenger in the back seat attempted to jump out of the SUV but his clothes caught on the vehicle. The man was dragged down the road before he was able to crawl back inside the SUV, police said.

The driver and the passenger were taken to a nearby hospital for undisclosed injuries.

Officers say the passenger was wanted on a felony warrant.

In the end, two men and one woman were arrested, police said.

After several hours, San Diego Gas and Electric crews restored power to the block.

Belgian authorities issued a new appeal for information on Monday about the mysterious "man in white" pictured in surveillance footage alongside the Brussels airport suicide bombers, NBC News reported.

Only one person — Faycal Cheffou — has been charged directly in relation to the Brussels attacks.

Belgian media had cited police sources in saying Cheffou was the "man in white" on the right in airport surveillance footage. NBC News has been unable to confirm that information.

Police early Monday, however, posted a new statement with video and photos of the "man in white" that said authorities are seeking to identify the man, who is suspected of committing Tuesday's deadly attack at Brussels airport.
