Chase Suspect Tries to Hide From Officers in Storm Drain

A man riding a stolen motorcycle led officers on a high-speed chase in San Diego overnight that ended with the suspect trying escape from officers by hiding out inside a storm drain.

The pursuit – which spanned several freeways across approximately 30 miles – began in National City just after midnight, near Prospect Street and Sweetwater Road, and ended 40 minutes later in a storm drain in the 14000 block of Conchos Drive in Poway.

The suspect ditched the motorcycle near the graffiti-covered storm drain and ran away on foot. Officials, flashlights in hand, trudged through some water to get to the man inside the drain. Deputies with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO) were seen escorting the handcuffed suspect from the drain, his head hung low. He was then placed into the backseat of a patrol vehicle.

According to the National City Police Department (NCPD), the chase began when the suspect sped through at least two stop signs in front of officers. Instead of yielding for police, the suspect kept riding, hopping onto northbound Interstate 5, then State Route 163, then Interstate 15. At certain points, speeds reached 90 mph.

As the pursuit headed onto highways and toward Poway, NCPD called for backup from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and SDSO. When officers ran the suspect’s plates, they discovered the motorcycle had been reported stolen.

CHP officers chased the suspect across the freeways. When the suspect got to Conchos Drive, he hopped off the motorcycle and ran away on foot toward the storm drain. Deputies entered the drain and took the man into custody.

His name was not immediately released. No one was injured during the pursuit.

A hip hotel in downtown San Diego is offering suds and sun via its new “pop-up beer garden” located on its rooftop.

Starting daily at 12 p.m., Andaz San Diego – located at 600 F St. in the Gaslamp Quarter – invites visitors and locals to kick back on lawn chairs on the hotel’s rooftop bar and lounge and sip on craft beers from San Diego best brewers.

The pop-up beer garden doesn’t just stop at suds. German-style snacks that pair perfectly with brews are served up there, too, including pretzels, curry wurst and schnitzel. “A cold, sudsy brew just tastes better in a laid-back environment, especially one set against the backdrop of spectacular downtown views of San Diego like from RoofTop600,” said Jeffrey Miller, General Manager of Andaz San Diego.

The pop-up beer garden will run for a limited time only, through April.

3 Sumatran Tiger Cubs Born at Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomed three Sumatran tiger cubs into the world on January 28.

Mom Joanne gave birth to one male and two females making the Safari Park now home to ten Sumatran tigers.

After their first wellness exam on February 16 the three cubs are thriving and being well cared for by their mom. Once the cubs are a little older visitors can see them at Tiger Trail.

There are fewer than 350 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild. Scientists estimate the species could be extinct in its native Sumatra by 2020, unless measures are taken to protect and preserve it.

From loss of habitat to poaching tigers continue to struggle in the wild. Poachers sell their body parts mostly for folk remedies.

People can help protect wild tigers by avoiding products with non-sustainable palm oil, an industry that harms tiger habitat.

Guests have the opportunity now to see Suka, the park’s 5-month-old Sumatran cub, inside Exhibit A at Tiger Trail.

Images Show Sanders' 1963 Arrest

A decades-old photo showing the arrest of Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders during a 1963 protest on the South Side of Chicago surfaced Saturday, according to several reports.

The Chicago Tribune released the photo from its archives Saturday morning. Sanders’ campaign confirmed the imaged showed the candidate as a 21-year-old student at the University of Chicago — then a civil rights activist — being taken by Chicago officers toward a police wagon in the Englewood neighborhood.

"Bernie identified it himself," senior campaign adviser Tad Devine told the Tribune. "He looked at it — he actually has his student ID from the University of Chicago in his wallet — and he said, 'Yes, that indeed is (me).'"

Also on Saturday, the campaign confirmed a video uploaded earlier in the week by a film company shows Sanders' arrest, The New York Times reported.

Devine told the Times the candidate identified himself in the video, shared by Kartemquin Films, by the watch he is seen wearing.

The footage also shows the Jan. 14, 1964 edition of the Chicago Tribune. The line, "Sanders was arrested Aug. 12 at 74th and Lowe and charged with resisting arrest" is highlighted in an article titled "Race Protest Cases of 159 are decided."

According to both outlets, the protest was over segregation in Chicago Public Schools. Sanders was found guilty of resisting arrest and fined $25, the Tribune reports.

He was a leader of the Congress of Racial Equality, a civil rights group, during his time at the University of Chicago, according to the Tribune.

The new Mission Valley Fire Station 45 held an open house Saturday. The event included tours, CPR training and children’s activities.

The station is the first to be built in District 7 in over 20 years, and is also the first permanent fire station on Mission Valley.

There was a temporary fire station nearby, but the fire chief said the new station has improved response times since then.

"Having a full blown fire station here with an engine and truck company here has really reduced response times in this area," Chief Brian Fennessy told NBC 7. "We're just so happy to have the folks out here.

Councilmember Scott Sherman teamed up with San Diego Fire-Rescue for the event.

'El Chapo's' Wife Breaks Silence in Telemundo Exclusive

The third wife of notorious Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán says she fears for her husband's life in jail after the drug lord's lawyers reported harsh treatment by prison guards.

Speaking out for the first time in an exclusive interview with Telemundo, Emma Coronel Aispuro, says “El Chapo’s” health is suffering greatly due to the living conditions at the prison. The 26-year-old former beauty queen says Guzman has not been seen by a physician and contends that the Mexican government is ultimately responsible for her husband’s health and well-being.

“I am afraid for his life. We don’t know if he is eating well. We don’t know about his well being because we haven’t seen him,” Aispuro says, claiming that prison guards "want to make him pay for his escape."

Aispuro's controversial interview with Mexican journalist Anabel Hernández comes days after Guzman's lawyers allege guards at Mexico's Altiplano prison won't let him sleep and wake him up every two hours at night — a practice his attorney likened to "torture."

"He said 'what I want is for them to let me sleep. They are making me into a Zombie," Juan Pablo Badillo quoted Guzman as saying. Guzman is currently behind bars at the Altiplano prison — the same jail he escaped from seven months ago — while waiting for the possible extradition solicited by the U.S. government.

According to Hernandez, Aispuro described Guzman's treatment as "slow torture."

"Apparently there's abuse, there's violations of human rights against him," Hernandez says. "They are not allowing him to sleep."

Aispure gives insight into the private life of "El Chapo," revealing when and where they got married, what life was like as the wife of the most wanted fugitive in the world, and what his relationship with their twin daughters is like.

She also details the circumstances around the deadly raid by the Mexican navy in which Guzman was recaptured as well as his relationship with Mexican actress Kate del Castillo.

The interview will air Sunday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. EST on Telemundo.

Nearly 100 San Diego-area college students shaved their heads Saturday to help a veteran and fellow student fighting cancer.

Members of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Cal State San Marcos students took turns, one by one, sitting down and shaving their heads for Jason Beyer, 34. The fraternity is not recognized by the university.

Beyer, a veteran with two Marine Corps tours under his belt, is fighting one of the most difficult battles of his life: testicular cancer.

"When I'm laying up in the hospital," Beyer said. "It gives me strength to get through knowing you're with me."

Beyer said he's grateful for the support.

"Yes, there's an age gap and sometimes, I can't relate to them, music-wise, fittingly they're playing 80s music today, which is a surprise to me," Jason said.

But there's no generational gap in giving back.

"The big reason why we're doing this is to help our fellow brother with his mental support," said David Sachez. "He's going through Chemo now."

For two hours, proceeds from the $10 haircuts went to Fisher House, where families stay when their military members are hurt or sick.

The group raised $3,456 Saturday. If you missed the event but would still like the donate, you can do so here.

Trump Dismisses Talk of Brokered Convention

The chances of Trump winning the nomination or the GOP’s having a brokered convention could increase dramatically if the GOP field does not consolidate behind one or two alternatives in the coming weeks, NBC News reported.

A brokered convention would occur if no candidate has the required amount of delegates to secure the nomination, leading to a battle on the convention floor in July to choose a nominee.

Trump dismissed that notion, calling it “unlikely.” Marco Rubio also dismissed talk of a brokered convention.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said the party would support any nominee, but would be prepared for anything.

"Planning can mean a lot of things. We're prepared for anything," Priebus told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on “This Week.”

The Uber driver accused of killing six people and injuring two others in a Saturday evening rampage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, picked up and dropped off passengers between shootings, NBC affiliate WOOD reported.

The suspected gunman, identified by police as 45-year-old Jason Dalton, was arrested following a massive manhunt in Kalamazoo. He was expected to be arraigned Monday on murder charges.

An Indianapolis-area man, who went to the southern Michigan city with his family Saturday night for a show, told WOOD that he ordered an Uber ride after someone warned him to be careful because there was a gunman shooting people randomly around town.

The man, identified only as Derek, told the station that he was at Bell's Eccentric Cafe on Porter St. with his wife, mother- and father-in-law, and hailed a car from the ride-sharing app to return to their hotel, deciding it was safer than walking.

Derek's driver, Jason, arrived in a dark-colored Chevy HHR. According to Derek's digital receipt, shared with WOOD, Dalton arrived at Bell's at 12:12 a.m.

"My father-in-law mentioned from the back seat, you know, the situation with the shooter,” Derek told WOOD in a phone interview. “I kind of jokingly said to the driver, ‘You’re not the shooter, are you?’

Derek said the driver shook his head and gave him a "sort of 'no' response."

“I said, ‘Are you sure?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not, I’m just tired,'” Derek continued. “And we proceeded to have a pretty normal conversation after that.”

Derek told WOOD that Dalton appeared to be calm and he did not smell gunpowder or notice any weapons in the car. The family of four arrived at the Radisson Hotel where they were staying, seven minutes from the cafe, at 12:19 a.m. The fare cost $5.23, the invoice shows.

Dalton was arrested less than 20 minutes later near Porter St., according to WOOD. Derek awoke on Sunday to discover that his Uber driver was in fact the suspected gunman.

“It’s a little jarring. I don’t think that it’s really set in yet,” Derek told WOOD.

The ride-sharing company confirmed that Dalton, 45, was an Uber driver and said he had passed a background check.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders admitted he may have been right, saying that voter turnout wasn’t as high as he had wanted in Nevada during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Turnout for Saturday’s caucus contest in Nevada was estimated at about 80,000 people. That’s a drop from the 120,000 who came to caucus in 2008.

“What I've said over and over again, is we will do well when young people when working class people come out, we do not do well when voter turnout is not large."

Clinton sat at 53 percent with nearly all precincts reporting Sunday, while Sanders trailed at 47 percent.

A dog, a cat and bird perished in an early morning apartment fire in North Park, San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said.

The fire broke out at 7:14 a.m. Sunday on the 3700 block of Arnold Avenue, fire officials said.

Battalion Chief Rob Hartman said when crews arrived, they saw flames coming out of all windows and from the front door.

"This thing had already vented through a sky light through the roof, which probably fed the fire pretty good," said Hartman. "That's why, probably, why it was so hot."

Firefighters said it was so hot, it took them four minutes to start breaking through the roof and fighting the fire.

Neighbors that rushed to the scene in the morning said the wild flames made it difficult to help.

"You see fire, you try and get inside, you smell fire and you wake up people," said neighbor Othman Janati. "We try to throw a rock at the window and do your best, but it's hard to feel like there's nothing you can do."

The fire was contained to one apartment. The garage suffered water damage and an adjoining apartment had minor smoke damage.

In cell phone video of the fire, you can hear a man repeatedly screaming to help someone inside.

"He was saying someone is in there," neighbor Chris Ritter said. "Someone is stuck. 'Help, help.' I was hearing banging and someone yelling, 'help!'"

Crews found a man trapped inside and carried him out. He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center's Burn Center and is in critical condition.

Neighbors said they hoped the elderly man will heal.

"There's so much emotion," said Othman. "I just hope he's okay."

The origin and cause of the fire is unclear, fire officials said.

No further information was immediately available.

DUI Suspect Arrested After Striking Young Girls, 10 and 12

Two young girls, aged 10 and 12, were struck and serious injured while walking on a sidewalk by a woman who told police she fell asleep at the wheel, San Diego Police said.

The incident happened at 6:02 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Santo Road near Shields Street when a woman driving a Toyota Tercel was heading northbound on Santo Road, San Diego Police Department Sgt. Leonard Flake said.

The driver, identified as 30-year-old Julianne Little, swerved off the road and hit the girls, who were walking on the east sidewalk, police said.

Little told police she fell asleep coming home from work, Flake said.

"A range of 15-20 minutes might’ve elapsed before she returned, believing she struck something and returned to the scene with her father, per what I’m told," Flake said. "As to her exact statement, that’s still under investigation, we’re still exploring what she may or may not have seen or been aware of at the collision."

The 12-year-old girl suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries; the 10-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries. The two girls have not been identified, though the 10-year-old's uncle told NBC 7 San Diego the girls are best friends. The 10-year-old's father is in the military and family members are coming from afar to be by the girls' side, the family said.

Little initially fled the scene; however, after driving home, police said, Little returned to the scene with her father. After an evaluation, she was arrested and charged with Felony Driving Under the Influence, Drugs and Felony Hit-and-Run Causing Great Bodily Injury, police said. She was booked into jail on $1 million bail.

Students in the area said Santo Road, which leads to a nearby school, said the road can often be dangerous for children walking to school.

"Coming up here, coming up here, pitch dark," said Hollis Stephens, a student, motioning to both sides of the road. "You see a car have to turn around and know the car is not going to hit you."

The crash is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

Gaby, 8, Hands Out Donated Blankets to Homeless

An 8-year-old girl passed on playing with friends Sunday morning, instead opting to hand out donated blankets to people experiencing homelessness in Downtown San Diego.

During a cold front several weeks ago, Gabriella Betancourt did not like knowing some people may not be warm as they fell asleep that night.

“Sometimes I feel a little bit bad for them, because it’s really cold at night,” Betancourt said.

She got the idea to collect blankets for the homeless when reading a book about a homeless lady who received help from two young girls.

“I felt really happy that two kids are helping homeless people, cause it really touched my heart,” she told NBC 7 San Diego.

So Gabriella’s parents put out a request on Facebook, asking people to drop off new and gently used blankets to her dad’s barbershop in Santee.

The family spent hours wrapped more than 30 blankets with handwritten notes from Gabriella.

"I always blame my wife,” said Javier Betancourt, Gabriella’s father. “I told my wife that she is the foundation of our family. She's always taught our kids to have morals and respect and to care for other people, as well as each other."

The weeks-long journey culminated Sunday at 16th and Island, where Gabriella handed out the blankets to people experiencing homelessness.

Viviana Betancourt, her mother, helped out Sunday. She says her daughter is a constant source of inspiration for her.

"I'm very inspired by her because I always wanted to do something like that too and for her to be so young, and have that idea so young, she inspired me," she said.
