President Obama announced he planned to fulfill his “constitutional responsibilities for appointing a justice,” despite a call from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that the next president should nominate the successor to Justice Antonin Scalia, NBC News reported.

Many legal analysts named Sri Srinivasan as a top choice. Obama nominated him for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and he previously served as the Principal Deputy Solicitor General of the United States.

Paul Watford, who was appointed by Obama to the Ninth Circuit, is also a possible nominee. Watford previously clerked for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and graduated from the UCLA School of Law.

Patricia Millett, who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit Merrick Garland have also been named as possible successors.

Little People of Ecuador May Unlock Cancer Cure

One hundred very small people living in the remote villages of Ecuador may hold the key to curing cancer and other diseases, NBC News reported.

They all suffer from Laron Syndrome, an incredibly rare genetic disorder that stops them from growing taller than 4 feet but also seems to protect them against cancer and diabetes and maybe even heart disease and Alzheimer's.

NBC News traveled with Guevara-Aguirre, an endocrinologist, and his research partner, Dr. Valter Longo, a longevity specialist at the University of Southern California, to southern Ecuador to visit their tiny patients.

Their research has two goals: figuring out how to distill the anti-disease properties of Laron Syndrome into a medication that could be used to fight cancer, diabetes and other illnesses in the rest of the world, and getting treatment that could help young people with the syndrome grow to full size.

Couple’s Valentine’s Day – 80 Years in the Making

Maury and Helen Goosenberg eloped in Philadelphia in 1935. Little did they know eighty years later they’d still be together.

“We ran away and got married. It was an elopement. We told the family about it afterwards. We weren’t taking any chances,” Helen told NBC 7. “His family wasn’t too happy with me and mine wasn’t too happy with him.”

On Sunday the Goosenbergs were honored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter for being 2016’s longest married couple. The Goosenbergs, who live in Carlsbad, were selected from over 250 couples across the county.

The organization presented the couple with gifts, acknowledgments and a wedding cake at their home at La Costa Glen retirement community in front of family and friends.

Many of the Goosenbergs’ seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, including the great granddaughter who nominated them, attended.

Maury and Helen are 102 and 100 respectively, and although they’re moving a little slower these days, they treasure every moment of the life they’ve had together.

“He gave me a big kiss and he’s ready to go, and I said, ‘Wait a minute.’ And I just went on, told him how I felt and what I thought we should do,” Helen remembered.

She said she’s the one who proposed, but Maury said he would have asked if she didn’t.

“We had been going together for such a long time. Everybody knew that she was betrothed to me. It was just a matter of time,” Maury told NBC 7.

One of their favorite memories, the couple said, is the time they won a big dance contest.

“I forgot that. It was quite a deal when we did that!” Helen said.

“I agree with you. It is quite a deal,” Maury replied.

They profess they don’t know the secret to a happy marriage but admitted, ‘we just like to argue.”

The Goosenbergs marriage has survived the Great Depression, a world war, 13 presidents and dozens of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren – and it’s not over yet.

“[They said] ‘It never would last," Helen laughed. "it just wouldn’t last."

Miners have unearthed an impressive 404.2-carat diamond in the African country of Angola.

The diamond — discovered by the Lucapa Diamond Company of Australia in partnership with Angola's national diamond company, Endiama, and the privately owned Rosas e Petalas — could be worth more than $20 million in Australian currency, or $14.3 million USD, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

It's the 27th largest diamond ever discovered and the biggest to hail from Angola, one of the world's top diamond producers, Lucapa announced in a news release Monday. The "spectacular" gemstone measures about 7 cm long.

The second-largest Angola diamond, uncovered in 2007 and known as the "Angola Star," weighed in at 217.4 carats, Lucapa said.

A whale was spotted Monday morning off the coast of Shelter Island, enjoying a sun-filled swim in the shallow waters.

The whale was spotted by the NBC 7 news chopper in the bay east of Point Loma. Whale sightings so close to shore are uncommon.

The animal appears to be a gray whale, according to marine biologists at Birch Aquarium.

Gray whales are in abundance off San Diego’s coastline this time of year, marking the peak in whale watching season.

Humpback whales, on the other hand, migrate to the warm waters of Hawaii in December, though experts told NBC News last month that the animals were slow to head to the islands this year.

Experts said the whales' absence could just mean they're spending more time feeding in northern waters, possibly because of El Nino disruptions or because their population has gone up.

Neighbors in Mira Mesa are mourning the loss of an 85-year-old man who died crossing the street just outside his home in Mira Mesa.

The crash happened at 5:06 p.m. Sunday on the 8300 block of Ivory Coast at an unmarked crosswalk on Reagan Road, San Diego Police (SDPD) said.

Rosa Reyes, the victim’s neighbor, was outside at the time and watched as the man, who has not yet been identified by officials, was walking across Reagan Road as he had done so many times before.

“It’s not really good for me, you know. I know him for many years,” Reyes said through tears. “I saw the neighbor fly in the air.”

The driver, a woman in her 60s, was heading west on Reagan Road when she fatally struck him, SDPD officials said.

“I wouldn't say she was speeding, but she was going too fast for the conditions into the sun where she couldn't see,” an officer said.

Reyes said cars are always speeding down that road.

“He already crossed the street,” she added. “I don't know why she didn't see him. It’s so bad. Always the traffic is so fast at this point.”

The man was rushed to the hospital where he died of his injuries.

“It's very sad for today,” Reyes said. “It's Valentine's Day and my family know him for many years."

The driver has been cooperating with police. The driver has not been charged at this time.

Officials searched overnight and into the early morning for a reported missing swimmer off the coast of Ocean Beach.

At 1:18 a.m., a woman called San Diego Lifeguards to say she had seen a swimmer get into the water, but did not see him come out. The woman waited an hour before calling lifeguards, to see if he would come out. She had a baby in the back of her car, so she may have missed the swimmer coming out of the water. No other witnesses were in the area at the time.

Coast Guard officials searched overnight, looking for the man on land, in the water and from the air.

San Diego Police, Lifeguards and Coast Guard officials searched for another hour at 7 a.m. They will continue searching Monday and trying to find additional accounts of a man seen getting into the water.

No further information was immediately available.

Two Missing Sons With SoCal Ties Found Safe in Mexico: FBI

After a six month investigation, two missing boys have been found safe and their mother charged with international parental kidnapping, the FBI announced.

The boys, aged nine and 15, of Washington, were found in Mexico's Sinola state, with their mother, 41-year-old Faye Ku.

The boys were reunited Saturday with their father, David, who has legal custody of the sons. The boys’ father has family in Carlsbad and Encinitas and says his ex-wife has friends in San Diego. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies believed Ku adbucted her sons in Southern California at Los Angeles International Airport in August.

"For us personally, Helen and I are overjoyed to have [the boys] back at home," David Cook, the boys' father, said in a statement. "The boys are healthy, but have been through a difficult experience.
They have begun to make contact with their friends, and we are confident that in time they will heal."

A felony warrant for custodial interference was issued by the King County Superior Court in Washington on September 3 for the boys’ mother. A federal arrest warrant was issued in January by the United States District Court, Western District of Washington, after Ku was charged with international parental kidnapping. Another federal complaint and arrest warrant was issued Friday.

According to investigators, Faye crossed the border from San Diego to Tijuana illegally on August 29.

The FBI’s Legal Attache office in Mexico pursued leads in the case and contacted Mexican authorities regarding their location.

The FBI’s Seattle Division and Legat Mexico City coordinated the deportation of Ku with Mexican authorities.

National Institute of Migration (INM) officers accompanied the mother Friday to LAX, where she was taken into federal custody, officials said.

"We are eternally grateful to the FBI both here in Seattle and in Mexico for their tireless work in bringing this case to a successful conclusion," the boys' father said in a statement. "We are also very thankful to the Bellevue police department and the Los Angeles County sheriff's department for their role in the initial investigation."

Ku is expected to appear in U.S. District Court on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Lynch 'Most Likely' to Replace Scalia: Analyst

According to a leading Supreme Court expert, Attorney General Loretta Lynch is the "most likely candidate" to fill the seat of the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, NBC News reported.

Tom Goldstein, who runs the influential SCOTUSblog, had earlier predicted Ninth Circuit Judge Paul Watford would make the top of President Obama's shortlist. But in a revised blog post, Goldstein said he now believes Lynch will be the nominee.

"The fact that Lynch was vetted so recently for attorney general also makes it practical for the president to nominate her in relatively short order," Goldstein wrote.

Lynch would be the first black woman ever nominated to the nation's highest court but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already made it clear that he believes next president should be responsible for appointing a justice.

A reckless driver left behind a trail of leaking car fluid and debris as he crashed into at least nine parked cars in San Diego's Mira Mesa neighborhood, San Diego Police (SDPD) said.

The cars, some lining the 7700 block of Bendigo Road, were damaged at approximately 2:58 a.m. Monday when a male driver in a black Acura hit them, though it is unclear how the incident happened.

[[368835541,C]]

The driver went down Parkdale Avenue, Bendigo Road, Whitehall Road, Dancy Road, New Salem Road and Alcamo Road, though there has been no reported damage on Alcamo Road and new Salem Road. Police told NBC 7 San Diego "a bunch of cars" were damaged.

Resident Desiree Newman and her sister-in-law woke up early to find Desiree's new Camry smashed.

[[368872841,C]]

"[My sister-in-law] woke me up, she's like, hey, your car's hit, call 911," Newman said. "I just got this car a few months ago. It's pretty sad; I'm just glad no one got hurt."

The driver rear-ended her neighbor's Scion and side-swipped another neighbor's Toyota Avalon. The impact ripped off the tire.

"I don't know what to say, I'm so depressed of what happened," she said.

The driver of the car left a trail of leaking car fluid and crashed cars behind him.

[[368838661,C]]

A man standing next to the Acura on scene told NBC 7 San Diego the car belong to his son and his daughter's boyfriend took the car and went on a wild ride.

Police told the victims on scene the driver is injured at the hospital; he suffered some injuries from the crash and as a result of people trying to injure him. Police on scene told NBC 7 someone was taken to the hospital, but did not confirm it was the driver.

[[238427591,C]]

SDPD officials said they are holding someone responsible for the crash, though it is unclear who that person is.

No further information was immediately available.

Americans Split on View of U.S. Military Dominance: Poll

$

Americans are split down to middle on whether the U.S. remains the leading global military power, according to a new Gallup poll.

In the opinion poll released Monday, 49 percent of Americans said they believe the U.S. is the No. 1 military power in the world — the lowest percentage recorded in 23 years, according to Gallup.

Another 49 percent do not see the U.S. as the world's dominant military force, although the poll found that most Americans — 67 percent of those polled — believe global military dominance is important.

Researchers said waning confidence in the nation’s military power may be a result of worries about international terrorism.

Last February, a similar poll found 59 percent of Americans believed the U.S. was the top military power. The decline is in keeping with a 10-year trend: Gallup polls have found that positive public opinion on the topic has been steadily decreasing.

Additionally, 37 percent said the government is spending too little on "national defense and military purposes," a number that peaked in the early 1980s and has increased since 2015.

Many San Diegans that spoke with NBC 7 San Diego Monday said they believed the U.S. had the most dominant military in the world.

San Diego resident Danna Nicholas said she believes the military forces are the best in the world, and need more support from the government. More support would ensure we keep our top position in the world, she said.

"It does kind of surprise me but its generally in election years I think that people start to focus on where we spend our money and what they want the future to look like," Nicholas said. "So I think maybe people are forward looking and they're thinking that if we continue on a trend of downsizing the military and cutting back on bases and naval stations, we won’t be number one anymore."

Reginald Sidaway, of San Diego, said he believes the U.S. is on top -- at least for now.

"I think at this time its still number one but I don’t think its going to stay that way," he said.

However, in the coming years, he said he believed countries like North Korea and China may overtake the U.S. because of their ambition.

"You’ve got to remember, most people, me included, have no idea how much [weapons] they have," he said.

When the results are broken down by party lines, self-identified Republicans are found to be overwhelmingly in favor of increased defense spending.

Sixty-six percent of Republicans believe the government spends too little on the military and defense, a sharp contrast to Democrats and Independents — 20 and 27 percent, respectively, according to the poll.
