Poll: Clinton Holds 25-Point National Lead Over Sanders

0
0

Hillary Clinton leads rival Bernie Sanders by 25 points nationally ahead of Sunday's final Democratic debate and the all-important Iowa caucuses, according to the latest results from the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Clinton is the first choice of 59 percent of Democratic primary voters, while Sanders gets the support of 34 percent. Martin O'Malley gets 2 percent.

But Clinton's current 25-point lead contrasts with other recent national polling, including a New York Times/CBS survey, which found Clinton with just a seven-point advantage.

The NBC/WSJ poll screens out Democratic and Republican voters who aren't expected to participate in the presidential primaries and caucuses.

The debate will air on NBC at 9:00 pm ET.

Man Evicted From Homeless Shelter Fatally Shoots Employee

A gunman opened fire at a Philadelphia homeless shelter Sunday morning, killing one employee and wounding another.

Police said the suspect is a former resident of the Station House men's shelter on Broad Street near Lehigh Avenue.

The gunman was evicted from the shelter Friday night for breaking the rules by being intoxicated, according to investigators. When he returned to the shelter just after 6 a.m. ET Sunday morning to collect his belongings, police said, he opened fire on employees, wounding one worker and fatally shooting another.

One employee, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene and another, a 26-year-old man, was shot in the hip and taken to a hospital.

Residents of the shelter told NBC10's Drew Smith that they awoke to the sound of gunfire and saw one of the victims lying in a pool of blood and a man running from the building. One resident said both victims were always helpful and kind.

Former Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode is the director at Station House. An emotional Goode spoke with reporters late Sunday morning at the shelter in the aftermath of the shooting. He said the victim who died in the shooting was a good worker, well-loved by residents and had worked at Station House for several years.

Goode called the shooting tragic and said that security measures including searches of every person who enters the shelter are in place, but that there are no metal detectors. He said an investigation into whether increased security measures should be taken would begin in the wake of the shooting, and that the shooter managed to avoid a search when he walked in with food services.

The former mayor ended a news conference abruptly, saying he was losing his composure.

The two workers who were shot worked as a residential aide and a shelter manager.

The distraught family of the victim who died in the shooting arrived at the shelter later Sunday morning. They declined to be interviewed, but a cousin told NBC10 off-camera that the victim was 43 years old and enjoyed his job helping homeless people.

The surviving victim is in stable condition at a local hospital. That victim was able to identify the gunman for police, according to Capt. Anthony Ginaldi. Ginaldi said police are still searching for the 32-year-old gunman they consider armed and dangerous.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney released a statement on the shooting Sunday afternoon.

"This morning a man who had dedicated his career to helping our City’s most vulnerable lost his life, and one of his co-workers was badly injured," Kenney wrote. "It’s a heartbreaking tragedy."

With dangerously cold temperatures moving into the region, shelter employees were concerned the crime scene inside the building could interfere with Code Blue intake Sunday night. The Station House is the only city homeless shelter that does after-hours intake for single men.

"I implore Philadelphians in need of shelter services to continue to utilize them as we enter a Code Blue this evening," Kenney said. "The City is squarely focused on your safety. If you know of a homeless person in need of shelter please call our 24-hour hotline at 215-232-1984.”

The U.S. State Department was working Sunday to locate three Americans in Iraq after they were reportedly kidnapped in Baghdad, NBC News reported.

Dubai-based news service Al Arabiya cited their own sources, reporting they had been kidnapped by “militias” in the Iraqi capital.

"We are working with the full cooperation of the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover the individuals. The safety and security of American citizens overseas is our highest priority," said State Department spokesman John Kirby.

Iraqi officials in Baghdad couldn’t offer details, but said they were working with the U.S. Embassy to get more information.

The news comes after at least 18 people were killed and 40 others injured when insurgents attacked a Baghdad shopping mall last Monday.

36th Annual Martin Luther King Jr Day Parade

Communities across San Diego honored the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in its 36th annual parade along North Harbor Drive.

The parade had floats, high school bands, drill teams, college students, church groups, San Diego police and other organizations.

January 15th would have been Dr. King's 87th birthday, and 47 years after he death his message still resonates as much as it did a half century ago.

For James McBryde the parade was a time to celebrate with his son Justice and moment to teach.

“Try to keep it pretty simple for him so he can understand, you know equality for everybody. Everybody treated the same,” McBryde explained.

When King visited San Diego many years ago he spoke to Willie Manley, a former minister who worked to build relationships with officers 40 years ago.

“He said to me that he would hope that I would also talk to my children about how important it was to be a part of a non-violent movement,” Manley said. “We've seen some change but not very much."

Some at the parade felt recent years have been tainted by the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of officers.

Paradegoer Roxanna Rodriguez explained these types of shootings have been going on for a long time.

“What's new is that it's being broadcast in the news,” she told NBC 7.

Willie Manley hopes King’s memory will continue to live on so we won’t repeat the past.

“It does give me hope, and I am so happy to see all the young people,” Manley said. “That's what matters – the young people and we must get involved with them."

One police officer was killed and another was recovering after a shootout Sunday morning with a man who authorities said fled the scene of an accident in Utah, NBC News reported.

Douglas Barney of the Salt Lake County Unified Police Department died after a single bullet struck him in the head, Sheriff Jim Winder said. The second officer, Jon Richey, was shot three times, but was “conscious and alert,” Winder told NBC station KSL.

The suspect, Cory Lee Henderson, 31, was also killed. He was wanted on state and federal warrants, according to police spokesman Justin Hoyle, who spoke to NBC News.

An officer stumbled onto a non-fatal accident on Sunday and discovered two people left the scene on foot. Barney, who was dispatched with other officers, was later found to be shot. There was an exchange of gunfire minutes later between Henderson and police, Holye told NBC News.

Maldives Accused of Reneging on Medical Trip for Ex-President

Lawyers for the jailed ex-president of the Maldives say the government has gone back on an agreement to allow him to travel for spinal surgery, NBC News reported.

The leaders of the island nation said they were approving the trip to the United Kingdom for Mohamed Nasheed, just days after his legal team, including Amal Clooney, went to Washington to push for sanctions. But that deal is now up in the air.

Nasheed’s representatives said Sunday the regime insists that one of his relatives stay in the Maldives and sign a document that would make them criminally liable if he doesn’t return within 30 days.

The Maldives Foreign Ministry couldn’t be reached for immediate comment and didn’t release any statements.

Starting in late 2008, Nasheed served three years as president after the first democratic elections in the tiny Indian Ocean archipelago. Soon after leaving office, he was charged with abduction for ordering the arrest of a judge while in office.

'Debris' Found in Search for 12 Marines Off Hawaii Coast

Search and rescue workers found debris that appeared to be from a helicopter crash that left 12 Marines missing off the coast of Hawaii, according to the Coast Guard on Sunday, NBC News reported.

The debris was “consistent” with the type of aircraft the Marines were flying, according to Coast Guard Capt. Jim Jenkins. Jenkins declined to identify specific items.

The debris was found on the North Shore of Oahu, where the two choppers were involved in a midair collision during a nighttime training mission late Thursday.

There’s been no sign of any survivors, although Jenkins said the search and rescue effort was still active.

Doctors, Police Train for Active Shooter Situations

Explosions, role players, ammunition: it sounds like the set of a Hollywood movie – and for the people who participated in Strategic Operation’s live shooting training Sunday it wasn’t far off.

Part of Stu Segal Productions, they’ve been recreating close quarters combat and emergency response situations for nearly 14 years.

“We apply all the movie making techniques to make live training extremely realistic,” Kit Lavell, Executive Vice President of Strategic Operations told NBC 7.

They even had medical special effects, which included a human worn surgical simulator that allows people to mimic making incisions into a real person – without actually cutting them open.
Sunday’s training was for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s annual international meeting taking place at the convention center.

A preconference activity, the attendees trained to deal with multiple casualties at once while distracted by explosions, panicked civilians and armed suspects.

“Here at Strategic Ops I think the advantage is that we can take it to a bigger notch, higher than what we can do in a hospital setting or in a simulation center. This gives us more of that Hollywood capability, which is just amazing,” Dr. Roxane Gardner of Boston who attended the training explained.

The simulation took participants all the way from the injury site to the operating room testing their focus, fear management and skill in every situation.

“When you do recreate that you get all that energy, that tension, that anxiety, that fear that comes up, and if you’re a healthcare professional you have to know how to deal with that and really be able to stick to the task,” Gardner added.

Participants not only included doctors and nurses but also paramedics, EMTS, police officers, and other law enforcement agencies.

“It very exciting to see all these people work together in a way they would normally not work together,” Lavell said.

“These are key players both with the SWAT team out of Carlsbad, SWAT team with the Sheriff’s Department, special response team through CHP as well as military police,” Jim McNamara of the California Highway Patrol Border Division explained of the law enforcement presence at Sunday’s training. “We’re working in partnership to share tactics and ideologies and to learn from recent events and plan for the future.”

Pamela Andreatta, professor of medical and surgical education at the University of Central Florida explained during the Boston Marathon bombing everyone ran away from the situation except those who had this kind of training.

“You would never expect a concert pianist to not practice before their performance," Andreatta said. "Being able to execute those types of simulated environments that allows that rehearsal is really essential to the end user being able to perform in the actual environment.”

Democrats Meet to Debate and Sparks Fly

0
0

The Democratic presidential candidates met in Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday for their last debate before the Iowa caucuses in two weeks and with the race tighter, the exchanges were sharper. Here are some of the top moments from the NBC News/You Tube debate.

HEALTH CARE

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders disagreed over how to go forward, with Clinton supporting Obamacare and Sanders favoring a single-payer health care plan. Hours before the debate, he revealed the taxes he would raise to finance his single-payer health care plan.

Clinton was asked whether it was fair to say that Sanders wanted to kill Obamacare. She respected Sanders' intentions, but had questions about the nine health-care bills he has introduced over 20 years, she said.

"He didn't like that, his campaign didn't like it either and tonight he's come out with a new health-care plan," she said.

Sanders, after pointing out that she had not answered the question, said that his plan would provide health care for all as a right. He blamed a corrupt campaign system for allowing pharmaceutical and health-care companies to pour money into campaigns and thwart efforts to change the system.

Clinton said that she had stood up to the health care industry when it spent millions of dollars attacking her, and she argued for building on Obamacare rather than risk it being repealed.

GUN CONTROL

The match-up took place near the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where nine people were shot to death in the summer during Bible study. Clinton listed votes Sanders has made that she said were in line with the NRA: against the Brady Bill five times, for allowing guns on Amtrak and in national parks, among others.

She has gone after Sanders repeatedly for supporting a 2005 law granting gun manufacturers legal immunity and she did again Sunday night.

Sanders said he would back reversing the law — a change Clinton quickly called a “flip-flop.” He called Clinton "disingenuous" for claiming he was a reliable vote for the gun lobby and pointed to his lifetime rating of a D- from the NRA.

ECONOMY

On the economy, Sanders was asked about differences between him and Clinton on regulating Wall Street. Sanders calls for breaking up big banks and closing tax loopholes.

“The first difference is I don’t take money from big banks, I don’t get personal speaking fees from Goldman Sachs,” he said.

Clinton said Sanders was criticizing not just her but also President Obama who took donations from Wall Street.

“And President Obama has led our country out of the Great Recession,” Clinton said. “Senator Sanders called him weak, disappointing, he even in 2011 publicly sought someone to run in a primary against President Obama.”

Obama also signed the Dodd-Frank Act to regulate Wall Street, she said, and she called it one of the most important regulatory schemes since the 1930s.

"So I'm going to defend Dodd-Frank and I'm going to defend President Obama for taking on Wall Street, taking on the financial industry and getting results," she said.

Sanders responded that he and Obama were friends, and that they had campaigned for each other.

"Set the record right," he said.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley jumped in when Clinton called her plans to curb Wall Street excesses the toughest and most comprehensive.

"That's not true," he said.

O'Malley said he would put "cops back on the beat of Wall Street."

CLIMATE CHANGE

On climate change, O’Malley said that the three Democrats “actually believe in science.”

Sanders called Republicans a party so owned by the fossil fuel industry that its candidates did not have the courage to listen to the scientists.

He particularly mocked Donald Trump for once tweeting: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”

It was his second reference to Trump. Earlier in the debate, Sanders said, "In terms of polling, guess what? We are running ahead of Secretary Clinton in terms of taking on my good friend Donald Trump."

Carlsbad Man Skydives for 100th Birthday

Glenn Quillin celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday, but he didn’t do it with cake and streamers.

Instead he streamed across the sky by jumping out of a plane for the fire time.

“It was awesome, it was great, it was everything I expected and more,” Quillin said after landing. “I gave my pacemaker a workout.”

The centenarian explained skydiving with something he’d planned to do for a long time. “By god we did it,” he said.

Quillin did a tandem jump from 13,000 feet while family meeting cheered him on.

“Is there time for another one before dark?” he joked.

There is no word on what Quinn plans for his 101st birthday.

An Oceanside man died just steps away from a hospital entrance when a driver suddenly accelerated and struck him and a friend, Escondido police said.

The collision happened around 5:49 p.m. Saturday when officers responded to a call for a serious injury collision at the Palomar Medical Center at 2185 Citracado Parkway.

Police said 89-year-old John Marin, of San Marcos, was driving his white 2000 Toyota Tacoma near the front entrance of the hospital. All of a sudden, he accelerated and struck two people.

One of those two people was James Donaldson, 63, of Oceanside, who had just been released from the emergency room. His friend, Elena Cendejas, 67, of Oceanside, was pushing his wheel chair across the crosswalk. When they were hit, they had barely made it off the sidewalk on their way to the parking lot, a spokeswoman for Palomar Medical Center said.

When officers arrived minutes after the call, three people were already being treated by hospital staff. First responders had run out immediately to help the injured, a spokeswoman said.

Despite life-saving efforts, Donaldson succumbed to his injuries. Cendejas was admitted to the hospital and as of 12:45 p.m. Sunday, she is in critical condition. Marin was evaluated, but did not sustain injuries as a result of the crash.

No further information was immediately available.
