Ryan on Spending Bill, Obama and 2016

House Speaker Paul Ryan is dismissing conservative criticism of the $1.1 trillion spending bill that Congress passed on Friday, saying that Republican leaders "fought for as much as we could get" in the compromise legislation.

"We advanced our priorities and principles. Not every single one of them, but many of them. And then we're going to pick up next year and pick up where we left off and keep going for more," he told NBC's Chuck Todd in an interview on Meet the Press.

The deal, which keeps government agencies funded through next fall, cuts taxes and lifts the ban on crude oil exports, received the votes of 150 Republicans in the House, a level of support seldom seen by Ryan's predecessor, John Boehner.

Trump: Clinton 'Lies Like Crazy About Everything'

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump branded Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton a liar in an interview with Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press" Sunday.

"She lies like crazy about everything," Trump said. "She's a liar and everybody knows that."

The real-estate mogul was referring to a comment Clinton made at Saturday night's Democratic primary debate, where she asserted that Trump's rhetoric about temporarily banning Muslims from entering the U.S. is feeding into the ISIS recruitment strategy.

Fact-checkers have by and large been unable to verify this claim. However, in a later interview, the chair of Clinton's campaign said the candidate stands by her comments.

San Diegans Trade Guns for Gift Cards

Before 6 a.m. Saturday morning, dozens of San Diegans, with firearms in the trunk, readied to give up their guns for more festive items.

The event was hosted by the United African American Ministerial Action Council. Dozens of law enforcement agencies including the District attorney's office also joined forces for the gun buyback.

For some of the people who showed up to Saturday's buyback in Chollas View it wasn't easy to admit they even owned a firearm, including one father who said it’s the right thing to do.

"I've never used it,” he told NBC7. “I bought it because I thought that owning a gun would protect me, but that's not the case."

With the ongoing fight against gun violence it's a controversial subject down to the right to bear arms.

"I'm just turning in some rifles that my mother got from my father when he passed away,” Angela Robinson said. “They've been in the house forever and I didn't know what to do with them."

In exchange for their firearms participants get a gift card up to $200 or even the choice of a skateboard.

"I think there's a certain limit to where you don't need to have as many arms as some people have, in order to protect yourself,"Ed Langmaid said.

Once family heirlooms to extra protection, the guns will now be entered into a database before being destroyed.

'SNL': Fey, Poehler Reunite Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returned to “Saturday Night Live” as hosts, bringing with them some old fan-favorite characters and special guests.

The Democratic debate may have wrapped up shortly before things went "Live from New York," but it was the recent CNN Republican show-down parody in the show's cold open that had everyone talking.

“Nine [candidates] are here tonight. The five who actually have a chance are Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio and poor, sweet Jeb Bush,” said moderator Wolf Blitzer (Jon Rudnitsky). “The rest of you just wave so your parents know you’re here.”

"SNL" alumn Darrell Hammond returned to Studio 8H, taking center stage as front-runner Donald Trump. Playing off the real-life dynamics of the race, "tough guy" Trump mercilessly mocked "little girl" Jeb Bush. [[363070761, C]]

The apocalypse-now governor from New Jersey, Chris Christie (Bobby Moynihan), asked Blizter if he can answer a question “with a series of fear-mongering statements,” while a monotone Carson (Jay Pharaoh) calmly threatens to "go H.A.M. up in here.”

In a skit roughly based on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” Fey and Poehler — whose new movie "Sisters" comes out this month — reprised their iconic impressions of Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton in a Christmas past and present sketch.

Cast member Kate McKinnon, who has taken on the role of impersonating Clinton this election cycle, portrayed the present-day Democratic front-runner in the sketch. As 2015 Clinton gets ready for bed, singing "I'm dreaming of a White House" to the tune of the Bing Crosby classic, fog fills the room and out comes Poehler as 2008 Clinton, who was also a presidential candidate at the time.

The 2008 Clinton has a warning for 2015 Clinton. [[363063171, C]]

"On Christmas Eve 2007 I was cocky too and then someone named Barack Obama stumbled out of a soup kitchen with a basketball and a cigarette and stole my life," Poehler cautioned.

But 2015 Clinton brushes the warning aside, saying that she’s running against “human Birkenstock” Bernie Sanders while the Republican front-runner is real-estate mogul Donald Trump.

"Oh my God. We're going to be president!" the two Clintons exclaimed.

And what 2008 presidential race parody would be complete without the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, who joined the skit donning her "Tina Fey glasses" and impeccable accent.

"I should be the one giving you advice because in 2008 I got a heck of a lot closer to the White House then this gal did," Fey as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin tells 2015 Clinton.

As Poehler prepares to return to 2008 and "send a bunch of emails," 2015 Clinton swats the phone off her hand, breaking the BlackBerry.

"Trust me. You'll thank me later," she explains.

Also returning to "SNL" was alumn Maya Rudolph, who, along with Poehler, reprised their roles as Betty and Jodi on Bronx Beat. Amy Schumer, Gayle King and Robert Downing Sr. made a cameo as the "Sisters" stars' squad in an epic remake of Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood."

The holiday-themed episode closed out with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band singing "Santa Clause is Coming to Town," joined by the show's cast and Sr. Paul McCartney, who casually strolled on stage with sleigh bells in hand to join in the festivities. We see you Paul.

Israel's longest-held prisoner --a Lebanese man -- was killed in Syria by an Israeli airstrike on Saturday night, NBC News reported.

Samir Kantar was a Lebanese man who was convicted of executing one of the most notorious attacks in Israeli history and spent nearly three decades in an Israeli prison. He was killed by an Israeli airstrike that  targeted a residential building in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana Saturday night, according to the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah group.

Kantar and four Hezbollah guerrillas were freed in 2008 in exchange for the bodies of two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah in 2006, whose capture sparked a 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah. His release was highly controversial in Israel, where he is believed to be the perpetrator of one of the most grisly attacks in Israeli history

Spike in Hate Attacks Against Muslims in U.S.: Report

Muslims in America appear to have a bull's-eye on their backs.

Hate crimes targeting Muslims, their mosques and businesses, have tripled this year and the bulk of the attacks have occurred in recent weeks, according to a tally by California State University San Bernardino college professor Brian Levin.

There have been 38 anti-Muslim attacks in the U.S. since the deadly Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, Levin found, NBC News reported.

And 18 of those happened in the wake of the Dec. 2 slaughter in San Bernardino, according to Levin, whose office is just nine miles from the government building where a radicalized Muslim couple murdered 14 people and wounded 22 more before they were killed by law enforcement.

There were 481 anti-Islam hate crimes reported in 2001, most of them after the Sept. 11 attacks, for an average monthly rate of 40.1, according to FBI statistics crunched by Levin.

Over the last five years, Levin found that there were 150.8 anti-Islamic hate crimes per year for a monthly average of 12.6.

Jimmy Carter's grandson has died, the former president said Sunday, NBC News reported.

Carter, 91, made the announcement during his regular Sunday school lecture in Plains, Ga., although he apologized for being late — the first time ever — and described how only a few hours before, relatives tried unsuccessfully to revive his grandson, Jeremy, with CPR.

"When he got ready to eat supper he told his mother that he thought he would lie down awhile," Carter said. "His heart quit beating."

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported that Jeremy was 28.

Kroc Center 1000 Toys Short for Christmas Giveaway

The Kroc Center is severely low in toys and looking for donations for Monday morning’s giveaway.

The center provides toys for about 400 families in need for the Salvation Army’s annual toy drive – and they are 1000 toys short.

Parents will come to the center to pick out toys for their kids to open on Christmas.

The center specifically needs toys for boys and girls ages six to twelve.

Janet Higley-Reade, the Kroc Center's volunteer manager, says many of these families wouldn't be able to celebrate Christmas without the toy donations.

"It would just give such joy to all of these families,” Higley-Reade explained. “So many of them are struggling so hard, and just to know even if their child got three or four extra gifts for Christmas, it would truly make just a difference for them. No child wants to be without a present on Christmas morning.”

People can drop toys off Sunday night or Monday morning as early as 6 a.m.

The address is 6845 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92115. Toys should not be wrapped.

Can a Professor Be Fired for Doubting Sandy Hook Massacre?

Lenny Pozner has fought an underground movement of conspiracy theorists who have claimed the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre - and his son’s existence - was an elaborate hoax, NBC News reported.

Last week, Florida Atlantic University responded by moving to fire Professor James Tracy, a communications professor and a high-profile skeptic. Pozner has complained to police, filed legal injunctions and wrote an op-ed in a Florida newspaper targeting Tracy.

But the fight could be tough because professors have the right to say contentious things in their off-campus lives, according to NBC News.

Florida University hasn’t said what Tracy did to lose his job, NBC News reported. Tracy didn’t return messages for comment. Pozner did not return NBC News’ call for comment either.

Hospital Officer-Involved Shooting

A 26-year-old man was shot and killed by officers at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Saturday.

The man, identifed by Los Angeles County coroner's officials as Ruben Jose Herrera, was taken into custody as a vandalism suspect in the 1600 block of West 207th Street.

Police said he was throwing bottles at an apartment building. He "viciously" attacked two police officers, trying to take one of their stun guns.

The officers were taken to the hospital with injuries. The man was also taken to the hospital.

Two different officers were taking off the man's handcuffs as he was on the gurney at the hospital when an altercation occurred.

Police said the man attacked officers, and began swinging a metal chair at them. At one point, officers used a stun gun to try to subdue him.

Police said the man then reached for a gun in the officer's holster.

"The suspect picked up a metal stool within the emergency room and it was about that time that the officer tried the TASER," Commander Philip Tingirides of the LAPD said. "A witness stated that the suspect reached for one of the officers' guns. At that point an officer involved shooting occurred, and one round was fired."

Despite efforts from the ER staff to revive him, he died.

Police delayed addressing the public as to what had occurred until next of kin was notified that the man had died.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is located at 1000 West Carson Street.

It is the only Level 1 Trauma center in the area that provides care to insured and uninsured patients, and is a teaching hospital, according to its site.

One person was killed and another 26 people were injured Sunday night when a driver plowed into the Las Vegas Strip in what police say may have been an intentional attack, NBC News reported.

"This was not an act of terrorism," Deputy Police Chief Brett Zimmerman said, but "we're looking at it as possibly being intentional," and the homicide unit was investigating.

At least six people were in critical condition. Police originally said 37 people were injured, but later said 26 people were transported to three hospitals, according to NBC News.

Zimmerman said the driver, a woman who had a toddler in the car with her, twice drove off the road and into the sidewalk on South Las Vegas Boulevard — the famous Strip. The child wasn't injured, police said.

3 Die in Fiery Head-On Crash on I-5

Three people died Sunday in a fiery head-on collision on Interstate 5 near Encinitas caused by a wrong-way driver traveling at high-speeds from the U.S. -Mexico border, California Highway Patrol confirmed.

A Mercedes driver made a U-turn while crossing into Mexico at the San Ysidro Port of Entry and continued traveling northbound on the southbound side of I-5, CHP spokesperson Jim Bettencourt said.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection vehicle attempted to follow the Mercedes but could not keep up as it was driving at "extremely high rates of speed," Bettencourt said.

CHP received a call from CBP officials but officers could not find the vehicle on I-5 before it collided head-on with a Chrysler between Manchester Avenue and Loma Santa Fe Drive at 3:10 a.m.

The two vehicles burst into flames killing one person in the Mercedes and two in the Chrysler. One vehicle overturned.

"The crash was pretty horrific," Bettencourt said. "We have a long way to go. We need to make sure that we get everything accomplished that we can to ensure the best possible investigation for these people that were traveling in the right direction."

The victims were a man and a woman driving a rental car. Plane tickets were found inside.

Officials are still trying to identify the people involved in the crash.

As of 10:04 a.m. Sunday lanes were finally open to traffic.

Loma Santa Fe Drive is located approximately 39 miles north of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Chargers Hammer Dolphins on Emotional Day

The feeling at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday was an interesting mix of nostalgia, sadness and anger. The Chargers played the Dolphins in what could be the final NFL game ever played in San Diego.

The Bolts winning big made things a lot easier to deal with for crowds at The Q, a group that was, for one of the rare occasions this season, mostly pro-Chargers. The Bolts beat up on the Dolphins with a 30-14 win.

San Diego's defense was tremendous, allowing just 77 total yards in the first half. During one stretch the Chargers forced a 3-and-out on six of seven possessions.

Offensively the Bolts rode the right arm of Philip Rivers and some intervention from the Football Gods. In the 2nd quarter Rivers tried to hit Malcom Floyd, who was playing in the final home game of his 12-year Chargers career (he's retiring after this season), deep down the middle. The ball was tipped away and intercepted by Reshad Jones, who had a lot of room to run.

Eventually Jones ran into offensive guard Orlando Franklin, who stripped Franklin the ball from Jones and allowed Rivers to recover it just three yards away from the original line of scrimmage. That was a pretty good indicator that this was just going to be the Chargers' day.

Rivers threw three touchdown passes to running back Danny Woodhead, who also ran for a score (the first rushing touchdown for the Chargers since Woodhead ran for a pair in the season opener against Detroit). Woodhead is the first Charger to have a 4-touchdown game since LaDainian Tomlinson ran for four against the Raiders in 2007.

The Chargers improve to 4-10 with road trips to Oakland and Denver still to come.

Banned Loyal Dog Up for Adoption

$

A loyal pit bull who stood guard over her injured owner is up for adoption after the family who took her in found they were unable to care for her.

The dog, Precious, guarded her unconscious owner after fire broke out at their Landover Hills, Maryland, home earlier this month. Precious stood guard over her even after fire crews arrived at the home — but she ended up at an animal shelter with her puppy, Molly, because of Prince George's County's ban on their breed.

The next day, Precious and Molly found a new home with their owner's sister, Megan Sanchez, who lives in Montgomery County.

"She just wanted to protect her mommy; that's all," Sanchez said about Precious. "And her house."

But Sanchez and her family soon found they were unable to care for Precious or her puppy. They were able to rehome Molly, but Precious was left without a family. That's when a friend contacted Jessica Stuby and her organization, Babes 4 Bullies, for help.

Stuby said Precious has been amazing companion since she began fostering her.

"She's doing great. She's actually at work with me. She's been a wonderful companion," Stuby said.

Precious suffered from smoke inhalation as a result of the fire and also had fleas. Stuby said she wants to give Precious time to recuperate and will focus on finding her a home in the new year.

On Dec. 2, Precious made headlines for her act of devotion. In fact, firefighters said they had trouble getting to her owner — who was hurt in the fire and lying unconscious on the front lawn — because the loyal dog was standing over her.

Firefighters tried to call Precious away, but she wouldn't budge and acted aggressively when they approached. They eventually deployed a powder fire extinguisher in her direction, causing Precious to run away and giving them time to get the woman onto a stretcher.

Stuby hopes Precious' story will help change the law that kept her from returning to her owner.

"I think the main important goal isn't to rehome, but that her story can change people's mind about the breed," Stuby said. "She's not just an amazing dog — this breed is an amazing breed."
