Cancer Drug Helps Parkinson's Patients

A pill usually prescribed to treat leukemia has had dramatic effects in a few patients with Parkinson's disease, doctors reported Saturday.

Tasigna, also known by its generic name nilotinib, is used to fight chronic myelogenous leukemia, NBC News reported. High doses kill leukemia cells.

Doctors hoped it might stop the steady and unstoppable progression of Parkinson's, but it also appears to have reversed some of the worst symptoms in 10 of the 12 patients who tried it.

The researchers think lower doses will help damaged brain cells get rid of toxic trash that keeps them from functioning properly.

Dr. Charbel Moussa, who directs Georgetown's Laboratory of Dementia and Parkinsonism, has been testing cancer drugs against several different neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Excessive Force Lawsuit Filed Against SDSO

A Riverside man has filed an excessive force lawsuit against the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, claiming he was brutally beaten in a hotel hallway after he was handcuffed.

Jovan Jimenez, a Riverside resident, said the incident happened at Harrah’s Resort in July when he was a hotel guest, and the entire incident was recorded on a hallway security camera. He is suing for five million dollars for damages.

Jimenez was arrested on a battery citation at the hotel and had been in a scuffle with another hotel guest moments before the alleged incident involving deputies. Deputies accused Jimenez at the time of being the aggressor. According to the lawsuit, Jimenez made "a rude comment" to the deputy.

Jimenez’s attorney, Jerry Steering, told NBC 7 you can see his client being handcuffed behind his back and lead down the hallway toward the camera.

Steering didn't say what Jimenez said to Sheriff’s deputy Jeffrey Cruz, but he says the deputy responded by slamming the suspect against a wall. When the suspect hit the ground, Cruz hit him in the head with an aluminum flashlight, Steering said.

When he was struck by the flashlight, the lawsuit alleges, he lost consciousness. Deputies then began to "pounce on top of Jimenez, placing their knees in the small of Jimenez' back and maintaining their weight on Jimenez, causing him to suffer additional serious physical injury," according to the lawsuit.

As a result of the incident, Steering said, Jimenez suffered a gash on his head from the flashlight, bruises on his side and a knee wound.

The SDSO acknowledged the complaint, but did not comment on the pending litigation. The county has 21 days to respond to the Southern District Court.

Ted Cruz: GOP Leadership Are 'Effective' Democrats

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, R-Texas, unloaded on Republican leadership in the House and Senate and vowed to follow through on his promises should he be elected president.

In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Cruz said Republican leaders, especially in the Senate, are "making it easier for Barack Obama and [Senate Minority Leader] Harry Reid to add trillions in debt."

"The truth of the matter is Republican leadership are the most effective Democrat leaders we've ever seen. They've passed more Democratic priorities than Harry Reid ever could," Cruz said.

Cruz, now a presidential contender, said he is more qualified than any of his competitors to take on "the Washington cartel," which includes the Republican establishment.

Ben Carson made headlines this weekend for a series of controversial comments concerning Osama bin Laden and who is responsbile for the 9/11 attacks.

In comments to NBC News on Friday, Carson said it would be "ridiculous" to suggest Bush bears any blame for the attacks.

On Sunday, he also struggled to explain his own proposal for responding to the attacks. During the last GOP debate, Carson suggested threatening petroleum independence would've encouraged encouraged moderate Arab states to give up Osama bin Laden.

Where’s Samuel L. Jackson when you need him? Officials say a snake on the loose forced a SEPTA bus to evacuate Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The Route 52 bus was on 52nd Street and Westminster Avenue around 3 p.m. when a person carrying a 4-foot-long Boa constrictor got on board, officials said.

The snake somehow got loose and the bus was evacuated. Officials were able to safely get the snake off the bus and returned it to the owner. Passengers later got back on and the bus continued its route.

No charges were filed though the incident remains under investigation.

Boy Shoots 3-Year-Old to Death

A Chicago father has been charged after his 3-year-old son died Saturday night when he was accidentally shot in the head by his 6-year-old brother in their home in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

At about 9:05 p.m., the 6-year-old grabbed a loaded revolver on top of the refrigerator in his home in the 1000 block of North Francisco and then accidentally shot his 3-year-old brother in the head while they played a game of "cops and robbers," according to Chicago police.

The boys' grandfather found the 3-year-old, identified as Eian Santiago, after the 6-year-old ran upstairs to him to say his brother had been shot.

"The father must have had a gun in the house, but I never knew it," Israel Lasalle, the grandfather, said.

Family members took the younger boy to Norwegian American Hospital. He was later transported in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died shortly before midnight Sunday.

[[333843031, L]]

The boys' father, Michael Santiago, was charged Sunday with one felony count of child endangerment/death for "knowingly" storing the loaded gun in the house and making it accessible to his children. Santiago had shown the 6-year-old where the gun was stored last week, but he told him only adults should use it, according to prosecutors.

Santiago, a former gang member, told police he got the gun from another gang member and used it for "protection," according to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. His record consists of only misdemeanor charges, including a theft in 2010.

In court Sunday, Santiago was ordered held on $75,000 bond.

An attorney for Santiago could not be immediately reached.

A sheriff's deputy was shot and killed inside a Minnesota hospital by a man who was a suspect in a "domestic-related incident" Sunday morning, authorities said.

Danny Hammond, was being monitored by Aitkin County Sheriff's Deputy Steven Sandberg at the request of St. Cloud Hospital, where he was being treated, when a "struggle" broke out at about 5:15 a.m. (6:15 a.m. ET), said Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans.

Hammond grabbed Sandberg's gun during the struggle and shot him, Evans said.

Hospital security responded to Hammond's hospital room and tasered him — he then became unresponsive and died after being taken into custody, Evans said.

The cause of Hammond's death is being investigated by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.

Suspect Assault Cops, Steal Cruiser

A man in Maryland assaulted two Prince George's County police officers, then escaped from a police cruiser and assaulted a third officer in a wild series of events Saturday afternoon, police said.

One officer was treated at a hospital for injuries suffered in one of the attacks, which an onlooker captured on video posted to Twitter.

Police identified the suspect as Giovanti Moschino Young. Police said Young has two open warrants in Howard County, one for first-degree robbery and one for failure to appear in court.

Prince George's County police said in a press release that the suspect was a passenger in a car that was pulled over in Laurel, Maryland, for a traffic stop Saturday. During the traffic stop, the suspect assaulted two officers, police said.

He was arrested. He said he was injured and was taken to a local hospital. The hospital found no injuries, police said, and released the man back to Prince George's County police.

While Young was being taken to a prisoner processing facility in Hyattsvile at about 5 p.m., he escaped from a police cruiser -- despite being handcuffed, police said.

When the officer who was transporting the suspect confronted him outside the police car, the suspect "tried to kick the officer and spit at him and bit him," police said.

Video of that encounter shot by an onlooker shows a Prince George's County police officer grappling with the suspect, including laying on him and pressing his head to the ground.

The officer eventually used a stun gun to subdue Young, police said. Young is charged with multiple counts of assaulting police officers.

He was taken back to a hospital after the stun gun was used. The officer who confronted him outside the cruiser was also treated at a hospital.

Sailboat To Be Reefed Named After Cancer Survivor

A local breast cancer survivor now has a ship named after her.

California Ships to Reefs, which sinks old boats to create artificial reefs for local marine life, named a sailboat after survivor Nancy Painter.

The “Nancy Lee”, painted pink, was also signed by other survivors before its official sinking. Painter said her husband is an avid diver and a member of Ships to Reefs.

“My [husband] asked the board and they agreed, and I was just a little overwhelmed that he had done that for me.”

Once sunk, the boats create a habitat for fish and other sea creatures and a place for new life to grow.

“It’ll be at the bottom and when you dive you will be able to see the names, the messages for a time,” Painter explained. “Eventually it will fade. The paint will come off, and the critters will grow all over it, but I hope they still remember what it was for and why it was done.”

The ‘Nancy Lee’ will be sunk off of Mission Bay in an underwater park that includes two other ships and the old NOSC Tower.

A small army of law enforcement officers seized a variety of drugs and weapons and arrested 11 bikers during a gathering hosted by the Pagans Motorcycle Club on Long Island, New York, authorities said Sunday.

Officers confiscated five handguns, a rifle, a shotgun, a billy club, and quantities of marijuana, cocaine, crystal meth and morphine, according to the Suffolk County Police Department. Police also seized three vehicles.

The Pagans were celebrating their 50th anniversary and the reopening of their Long Island Chapter on Saturday night, police said. The event was billed as "Bikers for Thomas Strong," a fundraiser for a teenager who is being treated for brain cancer.

Hundreds of bikers attended the event, held at Duffy's Ale House in Lindenhurst. No arrests were made inside the restaurant, authorities said.

Nearly 50 law enforcement officers from Suffolk and Nassau counties, as well as state police and MTA police monitored the gathering.

Those who were arrested include six Pagan members from North Carolina and Delaware, two members of the Dirty Ones Motorcycle Club from New Jersey and the Bronx, and one member each from the Steel Wheels in Pennsylvania, Black Sheep in New Jersey and Armored Saints in New Jersey.

The arrests were made within a two-block radius of the restaurant, authorities said. None of the bikers resisted arrest.

Donald Trump told Fox News he took issue with Jeb Bush's claims that "my brother kept us safe."

Jeb Bush continued to defend his brother on CNN Sunday morning.

Port to Convert Area into Waterfront Viewing Platform

0
0

The Port of San Diego will convert a 2,400-square-foot concrete platform into a viewing platform at the North Embarcadero as part of its efforts to enhance the waterfront.

“The San Diego Bay waterfront is truly world-class, and the creation of a viewing platform will add even more color and excitement to an already spectacular destination,” said Chairman Dan Malcolm of the Board of Port Commissioners. “Combined with the recent improvements to the North Embarcadero waterfront, this will be a signature spot - the perfect place to enjoy the view of cruise ships, sailboats or a sun set. It’s one more unique amenity to draw visitors, engage local residents, and enliven our ‘front porch’ to the bay.

The platform will be on North Harbor Drive between Broadway Pier and B Street Pier. The Bay Café building, which closed in 2014, previously held the spot. The café’s building was demolished earlier this year, but the platform was left intact.

The Port plans to resurface the concrete, add illuminated stainless steel railings and repair structural problems.

The Board of Port Commissioners approved a resolution October 6 awarding a contract for the project. The viewing platform is set to open spring 2016.

Car Veers into Motorcycle

Authorities are investigating after a car veered into a motorcycle on a rural North Texas road in an incident that left two people injured and was captured on video.

Eric Sanders, the driver of the motorcycle, contends the car's driver swerved intentionally. He suffered abrasions in the collision that left his girlfriend in a Fort Worth hospital with a broken wrist and deep arm lacerations.

Sanders said the crash happened Saturday afternoon on a county road about 5 miles north of Granbury. A video captured the motorcycle passing a car on the two-lane road. The car veered left over a double yellow center lane, upsetting the motorcycle and sending the riders into the roadway.

Dub Gillum, a senior trooper and spokesman for the Texas Highway Patrol, said the agency has seen the video and that the car's driver may face felony charges.

Car Hits & Kills 3-Month-Old

A three-month-old baby girl was tragically killed when she was struck by a car after her mother lost hold of the baby and the car rolled backwards, police said Sunday.

The baby’s family was set to eat at a fast food restaurant in the 11200 block of 4th Street in Rancho Cucamonga, east of Los Angeles, just before noon.

The father of the child went in to place an order as the mother was helping her children get out of the car.

The family was borrowing a car, and the child’s mother was unfamiliar with the operation of the vehicle, police said in a preliminary investigation.

The mother believed she had turned it off and was unloading the three-month-old from her car seat, as well as helping her three-year-old son get out.

After removing the baby from her car seat, the baby’s mother realized the car was still running, police said.

She was holding the child as she walked around to the driver’s side, police said.

The mother reached in to turn off the vehicle, and somehow the car rolled backwards, police said.

She tried to apply the brakes, but lost hold of her baby, police said.

The baby fell and was struck as the car rolled backwards. After stopping the car, the mother was able to rush to her daughter.

The three-month-old was transported to the San Antonio Community hospital in Upland where she died, police said.

The mother of the child was devastated, but cooperative, so she was released from the scene.

Authorities are still investigating.

Sanders After 'SNL' Skit: I Have 'Ample' Underwear

Bernie Sanders joked about Larry David's "Saturday Night Live" impersonation of him, pointing out on the campaign trail Sunday that he has "an ample supply of underwear," NBC News reported.

The Vermont senator told supporters in Iowa, "In terms of Larry David, I think we're going to put him up on the stage at our next rally — let him do it rather than me. He does it better than I do."

Mimicking Sanders, David said: "I'm the only candidate up here who's not a billionaire. I don't have a Super PAC, I don't have a backpack. I carry my stuff around loose in my arms like a professor between classes … I own one pair of underwear — that's it."

Real-life Sanders responded: "Last week, I bought my second pair of underwear," adding: "Please don't write it down. That was a joke."
