Bernie Sanders has gained a nine-point lead over Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, and is closing ground on the Democratic front-runner in Iowa, according to an NBC News/Marist poll released Sunday.

In New Hampshire, the Vermont senator gets the support of 41 percent of Democratic voters while Clinton gets 32 percent and Vice President Joe Biden gets 16 percent. Back in July's NBC/Marist poll, Clinton was ahead of Sanders in the Granite State by 10 points.

In Iowa, Clinton maintains her previous advantage over Sanders — but her lead has declined from 49 percent in July to 38 percent; Biden sits at 20 percent.

The poll also shows Republican front-runner Donald Trump maintaining commanding leads in both of the early nominating states — 7 points in Iowa and 16 in New Hampshire.

Crowd Tries to Save Beached Shark

It was a stunning discovery on Cape Cod when a great white shark washed ashore on White Crest Beach in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, Sunday morning. People sprung from their beach blankets to snap pictures of the animal.

Eyewitnesses estimate the shark was between 10-15 feet long, and say it was clearly in distress.

"It was gasping for air on the shore at that point. It was big, it was a big shark," said Bill Bellrose of Boston.

"As it became more evident the tide was dropping and the animal was still alive and needed our help, everyone started pitching in," lifeguard John Wallace said.

Hundreds of people got to work, pouring water on the animal and digging a trench to try and free it from the sand and get it back out to sea.

"Just telling the big guys (to) get up front to do the pulling, girls getting buckets ... they had shovels, digging trenches, pouring water," said Rob Law of Saratoga Springs, New York.

The scene had people who might normally be terrified of this animal fighting to keep it alive.

"Some women had tears in her eyes, like, 'Oh my gosh, we have to get the shark back out into the water.' No one was thinking about the shark biting them or anything else. It was his survival, really something to see," said Barbara Law of Albany, New York.

Despite getting it back out into the water, it appeared the shark had died.

"It was a good thing they tried to revive it, but at the end of the day nature has its way of dealing with things and it had its way today," Bellrose said.

This wasn't the first time this summer people tried to save a beached shark on Cape Cod. in July, people successfully saved a shark in Chatham after it washed ashore.

California's Longest Zip Line Opens

If you have the guts and the time what is believed to be California’s longest zip line just opened at the La Jolla Indian Reservation Friday.

The ride, which can reach speeds up to 50 mph, goes about 1.25 miles through mountains, tree tops, canyons and valleys and the San Luis Rey River.

It gets real when you get up there,” Tribal Secretary Adam Geisler said. “They hang you out over the edge – it’s like sitting in a swing with a back – and before you know it you’re having fun. This is not your hang a rope on your backyard tree kind of zip line. This is a full blown amusement ride.”

The ride will be an added draw to the reservation’s popular campground, which gets around 120,000 people each year according to Tribal Vice Chairman Fred Nelson.

The zip line was built with the help of $1.8 million of federal economic grant money after several disasters and $200,000 from the tribe. If the zip line is a success it could bring in money to build cabins and eventually a casino, officials say.

The reservation, home to most of the tribe’s members, collects no gaming revenue and has been declared a disaster area three times in the last eight years including a fire, mudslides and flooding.

The zip line offers four separate rides broken up by a nature hike and cultural and nature lessons and takes roughly two and a half hours.

The cost is $99 per rider, $75 for returning campers. Participants must be 48 inches or taller and weigh between 65 and 275 pounds in order to ride. Reservations are required.

Playdates for Special Needs Children

A San Diego mom wants to help families with special needs children face their challenges with something simple: a playdate.

Tiffany Lees recently started a non-profit called Special Needs Playdate, after realizing how desperately her own family needed the interaction and support. She says she felt people were constantly judging her parenting any time she would take her son with special needs in public, whether it was to a restaurant or to somewhere like the fair.

"I learned really quickly that it's really isolating and you get judged," Lees said.

Her five-year-old son Dylan has been diagnosed with autism and is visually impaired in his right eye. Lees says Dylan functions at the level of a two-year-old. During a very tough time for the family, Lees and her husband realized they hadn't all been out together in public for three months, because it was just too difficult.

"We just realized, ok, we're done trying to see if it's going to be better," said Lees, "What can we do to move on from here?"

They decided to call a restaurant, ask for a table in an area where her family would be comfortable, and invite other families. It was the first special needs playdate. It was a success, and they eventually moved the events to an indoor play facility. The playdates now happen a few times a month. They offer families a chance to get out of the house and spend time with people who can understand first-hand what they're going through.

Diane Erth has attended the playdates with her son Max. "The children get to play and make friends in a fun environment where nobody will judge them for taking longer to climb over a hurdle or cross over a balance beam. The parents get a chance to bond with fellow parents who understand our daily struggles and triumphs," said Erth.

Lees says her nine-year-old daughter Mikaila, who does not have special needs, also benefits by being around other similar siblings.

"There is a need for it, and there was nothing out there. So I thought I'd go on a new adventure and find out how to make it work," said Lees.

Lees formed the non-profit so she can fundraise and expand the program. Long term, she'd like to open a spot that offers a safe place for families with special needs children, 24 hours a day. She also hopes fundraising will allow her to hold the playdate for free, or at a low cost.

"Our kids just want to be accepted as they are. As parents, we want the same for our kids as 'typical' parents do. We want our kids to be happy," said Erth.

Special Needs Playdate is hosting its first ever Family Fun Day and fundraiser Saturday, September 19 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Coronado.

Off-Duty Law Enforcement Stop Woman From Allegedly Attacking Man

Detectives are investigating after two off-duty law enforcement officials stepped in when a woman allegedly started attacking her boyfriend with a baseball bat, San Diego Sheriff’s officials said.

The incident happened at 5:31 p.m. Saturday on the 10400 block of Cuyamaca Street in Santee when an off-duty Sheriff’s lieutenant and her husband, an off-duty police sergeant with the National City Police Department, saw a car try to run over a man, Sheriff’s officials said.

Both of lieutenant and sergeant called for assistance on their work radio. A nearby citizen also called 911 for help.

The woman, identified as Jennifer Rebecca McKee, allegedly tried to run over the man, later identified as her boyfriend, with her car multiple times but failed, officials said. It was then that the McKee allegedly took a baseball bat and attacked her boyfriend with the bat.

The pair of law enforcement officials got involved when they feared for the man’s life. The lieutenant identified herself as law enforcement and pointed a gun at the woman, ordering her to the ground.

McKee grabbed the lieutenant’s gun and a shot was fired, but no one was hit or hurt. It is unclear who fired the weapon.

There was a struggle for the weapon, but the lieutenant took control of the gun. The sergeant, who went to help the victim, came back to help the lieutenant and used a Taser on McKee. She was then handcuffed and arrested.

McKee was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, spousal abuse and assault on a peace officer. She will be booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility.

Sheriff's deputies are investigating. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Homicide Detail at (858) 974-2321.

Late-Night Boat Crash Kills Son of Ex-49ers Exec: Family

A man killed in a boating crash that injured three other people in the waters off Catalina Island in Southern California was the son of a former NFL executive, family members said on Sunday.

The victim has not been named by authorities, but family members identified him as 26-year-old Michael Harris of San Francisco. He is the son of former San Francisco 49ers CEO Peter Harris.

The crash, involving a dinghy and another small boat, was reported just before 1:30 a.m. near Descanso Bay, about a quarter-mile northeast of Casino Point, U.S. Coast Guard Spokeswoman SondraKay Kneen said.

"The family is devastated and in shock, because Michael was a special, positive, young man," said Harris' uncle, John Harris.

The family said Harris, who attended Santa Clara University and the University of San Diego, had recently earned a master's degree in psychology and was working on getting a practicing license. He was a counselor at his former high school in the San Francisco area.

Harris' father was the president and CEO of the 49ers in the early 2000s.

Five people were aboard the dinghy, including Harris, authorities said. It was unclear how he died.

His girlfriend was hospitalized with injuries, Harris' father said in a Facebook post.

The other boat involved in the collision was carrying two passengers, Kneen said.

A helicopter crew from the Los Angeles County Fire Department evacuated the three injured boaters to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. One of the boaters suffered a head injury and the other two victims suffered minor injuries, Kneen said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation. Authorities said it was too early to tell if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

The U.S. Coast Guard and divers called off a search Sunday night for a boater who went missing. The search was expected to resume Monday.

NBC4's Jessica Perez and Jane Yamamoto contributed to this report.

National City Police have nabbed two suspects after their car, pursued by police, crashed into a Paradise Hills home in San Diego.

The chase started when the police noticed the car was stolen, according to officials. They tried to pull the suspects over, but they sped away. The suspects were driving 60 to 70 miles an hour through the neighborhood just before the crash. The driver turned the corner from Doriana Street onto Alta View when they crashed into the house's garage just after 4 pm.

"It was really like the movies," said homeowner Richard Cano.

After the crash the two suspects ran from the car. With the help of a police dog officers found the suspects. Both have been taken into custody.

The family, which lives in the home on the 2000 block of Alta View Drive, had just moved in the week before, and say they were planning a get-together with dozens of friends and family members just a few hours after the crash happened.

"We just got the garage door put in about three days ago," Cano told NBC7. "And before you know it we heard the big bang on the house."

The Cano's still hosted their house party Sunday night and have been given the go ahead to stay in their home.

Fallen Ill. Officer Mourned

Thousands of family, friends and coworkers gathered on Labor Day to mourn Fallen Fox Lake, Illinois, Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz at his funeral service in Antioch.

Gliniewicz was remembered as a family man, a friend, a hard worker and a youth mentor. He had four sons of his own, but he was described at the funeral as a "dad to about 1,000 others" because of his commitment to Fox Lake's Explorers Post 300, a nonprofit that trains 14- to 21-year-olds for a career in law enforcement.

"He used every opportunity to turn his actions into teachable moments, " Gliniewicz's brother said during the service.

Gliniewicz was on the brink of retiring after a 30-year career in law enforcement when he was gunned down in the line of duty last week.

He was the first on-duty officer who was shot and killed in Lake County in 35 years. Many expressed that they were not only grieving for the loss of an officer, but also for the loss of a family man, a friend and valued member of the community.

The fallen officer's brother also praised him for his heroic actions.

"When we were growing up, we always knew he was a hero, but now the whole nation knows him as a hero," he said.

At the beginning of the service, Gliniewicz was posthumously awarded the Fox Lake Police Department's "Medal of Honor."

The slain officer was also remembered for his courage in the line of duty, and several coworkers said they always looked up to him.

"He was the kind of man who in the face of danger would run towards it, while others ran away," Officer Rachel Smithberg, of the Joliet Police Department, said. "His dedication was unshakable, and his courage was unwavering."

Before the funeral, hundreds more lined up for a public viewing at Antioch High School to pay tribute to Gliniewicz.

“He was just a good man, always had a smile on his face, always,” Davis Kennedy said.

“It’s a sad day but hopefully this is kind of a testament to the American spirit and how people really are,” said Kathleen Villagomez, the wife of a police officer.

Following the service was a procession to Hillside East Cemetery (450 East Depot Street, Antioch), where Gliniewicz will be laid to rest.

The funeral procession wound through Antioch and Fox Lake, past the police department where Gliniewicz served, past the schools where he worked with young people and through the downtown he patrolled.

“The sadness pervades the entire community,” said Joe Ahern, CEO of 100 Club of Chicago. “But you can also see the resolve in the police department and all the state and local law enforcement that are here to help catch these guys.”

While the manhunt for his killers intensifies, businesses and residents in the Chain O' Lakes region continue to show their support to the police force and wife and four sons he left behind.

“The outpouring of support from the Fox Lake Community and the area surrounding us has been unbelievably tremendous,” said Lake County sheriff's Detective Chris Covelli.

For businesses who worked closely with the department, the loss is especially painful.

"We lost a very, very great officer,” said Mario Martinez, who has owned local the local lakefront landmark Dockers restaurant for more than 18 years. “It's a shame what happens to a community, what else can I say.”

Ritual Monument Found Near Stonehenge: Scientists

Archeologists in Britain have discovered the remains of a ritual monument near the Stonehenge site.

The hidden monument is about a mile from Stonehenge and contains at least 90 stone monoliths measuring close to 15 feet. The monoliths "lined" an arena forming what researchers are calling a “superhenge.”

The stones were placed around 4,500 years ago along the south-eastern edge of what later became the Durrington Walls — a large Neolithic settlement, researchers said.

“Those things are theatrical,” said Professor Gaffney, of Britain’s University of Bradford. “They are designed to impress and impose; to give the idea of authority to the living and the dead. It really does create a massive impression.”

Residents of a remote Arctic island teamed up with U.S. scientists to rescue a 1,000-pound polar bear trapped in a fishing net, the US. Geological Survey said.

The adult male bear was caught in a net on a barrier island off the coast of Alaska where locals, USGS and biologists from the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service undertook the daring rescue.

The mission began by “darting” the bear from a helicopter, said the USGS, and locals on the ground used their boats to keep the bear from drowning.

“Once the bear was sedated, the biologists worked to quickly untangle the bear from the net and, after determining it appeared uninjured from its ordeal, released it back into the wild," the USGS said on Facebook.

Family Claims Boy Poisoned

A 10-year-old Palm Beach County, Florida, boy remains hospitalized in Miami Monday after his family says he was poisoned when their home was fumigated for termites.

According to NBC affiliate WPTV, Peyton McCaughey's parents first noticed the boy's symptoms on Aug. 17. The family contracted Terminix to treat the house for termites, and says they were given the green light to return to the home.

The family tells WPTV that they all became ill, but that Peyton's symptoms were significantly more severe. They say the boy initially experienced nausea, but that his condition quickly declined and he began to lose motor skills and could not stand on his own.

Peyton was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach where he was in the ICU for nine days.

He was then transferred to Nicklaus Children's Hospital where he spent his 10th birthday, and on Thursday was transferred to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

The family's attorney tells WPTV that Terminix contracted with a West Palm Beach company called SunLand to do the actual tenting job, and that they believe chemicals were left inside the home.

According to WPTV, a Terminix spokesman released a statement saying, "We were saddened to learn of this and our hearts are with the family. We are carefully reviewing the matter."

An attorney for the contractor SunLand did not return WPTV's calls for comment.

Meanwhile, three Miami Dolphins players who heard what happened to Peyton, spent part of Sunday at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital visiting him.

Running back Lamar Miller, defensive end Olivier Vernon and wide receiver Jarvis Landry visited Peyton Sunday. According to a Dolphins’ spokesman, they brought gifts including a signed football, jersey, teddy bear, and other items.

The State Department of Agriculture announced Friday they are issuing a "stop work order" prohibiting SunLand Pest Control from doing any fumigation while they investigate.

In a statement, a Department of Agriculture spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the tragic and heartbreaking incident involving Peyton, and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is investigating SunLand Pest Control in collaboration with the EPA and the Department of Health,"

The family has started a Facebook support group entitled "Support Peyton McCaughey." The family is also accepting donations for the boy's medical care via a GoFundMe page.

Since it was launched five days ago, the page has raised more than $53,000 toward Peyton's care.

Jailed Ky. Clerk Asks Court to Block Gov.'s Order

The Kentucky clerk jailed for her refusal to issue same-sex marriage licenses continued her legal fight Monday, asking a federal appeals court to free her as she seeks ways around orders that she do her job despite her religious opposition to gay unions, NBC News reported.

Kim Davis has been incarcerated since Thursday, when U.S. District Judge David Bunning found her in contempt for continuing to block same-sex couples' attempts to obtain marriage licenses in her Rowan County office. An Apostolic Christian, Davis said authorizing such marriages, which the U.S. Supreme Court deemed legal in June, would violate her religious freedom.

On Sunday, Davis' lawyers appealed the contempt ruling – upheld by the Supreme Court — with the 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. On Monday, the lawyers announced a parallel maneuver: they asked the appeals court to set Davis free while they fight Beshear for bureaucratic changes that would accommodate her religious opposition.
