North, South Korea Talks Enter Third Day

Tense negotiations between North and South Korea continued through the night as Seoul demanded a formal apology for injuries to two of its soldiers this month, South Korean officials said Monday, NBC News reported.

The talks were described as tense after South Korea's Defense Ministry said it had detected "unusual" North Korean submarine activity even as the countries are trying to resolve a spat that brought the peninsula close to war last week.

Official sources said South Korean President Park Geun-hye told her staff during a meeting Monday morning that "it is most important to get North Korea's apology" for injuries to the two soldiers, who were wounded by landmines along the border early this month.

Toy Hand Grenade Closes Terminal

A toy hand grenade found in a piece of luggage at a security checkpoint Sunday afternoon prompted the closure of domestic Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport, authorities said.

Passengers were rerouted to boarding area C, which connects to the terminal via a walkway, while police cleared out the so-called suspicious package, airport officials tweeted.

"Originally there wasn't a line. They had just shut down the Terminal and told us to go to Terminal 1," Traveler Lynn Kristensen said. "Before you knew it, that line was all the way in LAX. So here we are in San Fran."

Ticket counters reportedly remained open during the incident but people were moved from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1. Meanwhile, travelers at other terminals said that security lines were lengthy.

Just before 2 p.m., SFO spokesman Doug Yakel told NBC Bay Area that the item had been cleared and the security checkpoint was being reopened.

Further details were not immediately available.

New Emergency Air Ambulance Base Opening in Alpine

Last Thursday, after three men collided head-on in Rancho Santa Fe, rescue crews called for an emergency helicopter for one victim with life threatening injuries.

When no helicopters were available a Fire-Rescue helicopter had to pick up the patient.

Soon a new emergency medical helicopter base, now the sixth in Southern California, will open in Alpine on the grounds of Viejas Casino.

The helicopter will serve the surrounding areas with 24/7 operation.

The base will be used as back up transport when current bases located in Imperial, Riverside and San Diego County are in use.

"Whenever we can establish a network of aircraft it increases our ability to serve all the surrounding communities." Anna Blair, VP of Business Relations at REACH Air Medical Services said in a statement. "The addition of this aircraft base increases our responsiveness and in-service expectations our communities have come to rely on us for. The fact that the leadership at Viejas, from Tribal Council to the Fire Department, is supportive of this air base location is very humbling. They want to serve not only their community but Southern California as a whole. It is our first base located on sovereign land and it means a tremendous amount to us."

The Eurocopter EC-135 has dual engines and the ability to fly in inclement weather when other aircraft might be grounded; it can carry crew, a patient and a family member and is equipped with night vision goggles.

The base is set to open at the end of the year.

Apple is recalling a batch of iPhone 6 Plus devices sold between the product's release date in September 2014 and January 2015, according to a statement on the company's website.

A component in the phone's camera is causing photos to appear blurry, the company said.

For this reason, Apple asks that anyone experiencing issues with blurry photos on a phone bought between this time, to contact contact an authorized service provider, its technical support team, or to make an appointment at a retail store.

Once Apple determines the phone reaches the proper requirements, they will replace the device's iSight will be replaced free of charge. Wireless carriers are not able to fix this issue.

An iPhone 6 Plus with a cracked screen or other damage that will impair camera replacement must be fixed prior to service.

'Free the Nipple' on NH Beach

If you were at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire Sunday, you might have seen more skin than usual.

"I am sharing it," proclaimed Shawntay Grasso. "Free the nipple!"

Some women on the beach went topless as a part of "Free the Nipple," a nationwide campaign to bring equality for men and women.

"I think there's a lot of shame attached to the bare body, and I just want to bring awareness that it doesn't have to be sexualized," said Grasso.

The movement is working towards eliminating the double standard of women covering their breasts. Standing in solidarity was one guy who didn't mind wearing a bikini top.

"I think I look ridiculous, so I think we should have equal rights and a woman should be able to take their top off and feel comfortable," said Nathan Surles.

And even though the women were on public property, they weren't arrested because baring your breast is legal on this beach.

"My two children right now are staring at a set of boobs, which is very inappropriate," said Jaclyn Gardner.

Not everyone was OK with the idea of these ladies letting it all hang out. Gardner says the movement is fine - just not near her two young boys.

"That's just the way society is. Women are supposed to cover themselves. They're supposed to stay that way," she said. "My boys aren't supposed to see that before a certain age."

Her oldest son didn't think it was a bad idea - just not at Hampton Beach.

"If I was on, like, spring break, with my friends, I'm all for it, but like, right now, I'm not diggin' it," said Demetrius Leesole.

Also on Sunday, men and women went topless in New York's Times Square - a legal act, but one that has drawn criticism from public officials.

In the second largest winning margin in the race’s history, Beholder became the first female to win the Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Saturday.

In the final turn she increased her lead in the 1 and 1/4 mile race to finish in 1:59.77.

After the race Beholder earned an automatic berth in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic in October where she may face off against famed American Pharaoh who is scheduled to end his career at the race.

"I knew she hadn't hit the afterburners yet and I said, 'This is going to be fun,'" Gary Stevens, Beholder's jockey told AP.

After the final turn, the mare increased her lead to 8 and 1/4 lengths, beating the other eight male thoroughbreds easily.

"I've never walked into the starting gate in a million-dollar race as confident as I did," Stevens said. "Usually there's a matter of nerves involved in these races but she caused me to have a normal heart rate going in there."

Beholder’s career earnings are now $4,256,600 including 14 wins in 19 starts.

This is Steven’s third Pacific Classic win and trainer Richard Mandella’s fourth.

"For one time, I'm speechless," Mandella said. "I didn't expect she'd beat these colts up like this."

"I was in a good spot, right there with Beholder," said Martin Garcia, who rode Hopportunity, the fourth place finisher. "Then she took off. She's a freak, man. A freak."

Beholder is one of only 5 mares to race in the classic, which began in 1991.

A two alarm fire broke out at the City Center Apartments on 4th Avenue in downtown Sunday evening.

The fire started about 9:20 pm on the first floor and quickly spread to the top floor of the two-story building.

Daniel Viets was asleep when the fire started. "I woke up to my room full of smoke. I didn’t know what was going on and I was choking...People were like there’s somebody up there in that room and I broke out my screen and they rescued me out the window."

Another man jumped from his second story window after smoke had filled his apartment. Timothy Morlan who lives in a nearby building spotted his neighbor.

“I said just hang out the window and we’ll catch you," Morlen told NBC7. "Three of us stood down there and he just dropped down and...one of the guys got the blunt of the fall, thank god, and nobody was hurt."

Crews say 14 people have been displaced and four people are injured.

As of 9:43 pm crews had put out the fire. There are several more smoke inhalation victims, and medics have set up a casualty collection point in case there are more burn victims.

One person who jumped out of a window has been taken to the UCSD Burn Center.

SDG&E and fire investigators headed to the scene to determine the source. The fire is believed to have been started in one apartment, although the cause is still not known.

The building was fully evacuated after the fire, and roads nearby the complex have been blocked off by fire crews. Officials expect the area to be clear within the hour.

ISIS Blows Up Roman-Era Temple in Palmyra, Syria

ISIS militants on Sunday blew up the temple of Baal Shamin, one of the most important sites in Syria's ancient city of Palmyra, said Maamoun Abdul Karim, the country's antiquities chief.

The temple bombing would be the first time that the insurgents, who captured Palmyra in May, have damaged monumental Roman-era ruins.

A week ago, the militants beheaded Khaled Asaad, an 82-year-old scholar who worked for more than 50 years as head of antiquities in Palmyra, after detaining and interrogating him for more than a month.

Before ISIS captured the city, Syrian officials said they moved hundreds of ancient statues to safe locations out of concern that the militants would destroy them. In June, ISIS blew up two ancient shrines in Palmyra that weren't part of its Roman-era structures but that the militants regarded as pagan and sacrilegious.

The gunman who was disarmed by American passengers on a train in France Friday said he was surprised European authorities suspected him of being an Islamist militant, a lawyer who interviewed him after the attack said Sunday, NBC News reported.

"He is dumbfounded by the terrorist motives attributed to his action," said Sophie David, who described the man as her client.

David told the French TV news channel BFMTV the 26-year-old Moroccan looked weak and malnourished and said he had only meant to rob people.

The man, named by French and Spanish sources close to the case as Ayoub el Khazzani, told David he found the Kalashnikov he was carrying in a park near the Gare du Midi rail station in Brussels, where he was in the habit of sleeping.

The three Americans who helped thwart an attack by an AK-47-toting gunman on an Amsterdam-Paris train received France's highest honor on Monday.

French President Francois Hollande gave childhood buddies Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler the Legion d'Honneur. Chris Norman, a British man who also rushed the assailant on the high-speed train on Friday, also recaived the award during a ceremony at the Élysée Palace, the president's official residence.

Although they have been hailed as heroes, they have been quick to share the accolades.

"Everyone played their own part. No one is specifically to praise," said Stone, a 23-year-old first-class airman during a press conference at the U.S. ambassador's residence on Sunday.

The water in Mission Bay's Santa Clara Cove will be closed until further notice due to a sewage spill, San Diego Fire-Rescue officials confirmed to NBC7.

On Sunday, San Diego Lifeguards closed the cove after an undetermined amount of sewage spilled into the cove due to a blockage in a nearby sewer line, SDFD Captain Amador said.

When crews got to scene, they took people out of the water and closed the beach.

County Environmental Health officials are on scene collecting samples. They will determine how extensive the spill is and how long the cove will be closed. They will also determine the cause of the spill.

Water closure signs will remain in place until the area is safe for recreational use.

No further information was immediately available.

Riley School Fire Deemed Arson

An overnight fire that damaged a San Diego-area K-8 school was deliberately set according to San Diego Fire-Rescue officials.

Someone set pine needles on fire outside a storage facility on the campus of Riley School on Mt Ackerly Drive in Clairemont.

“It’s terrible,” said Fredy Garf who lives nearby. “This is such a nice neighborhood and it’s hard to believe that somebody would do that.”

The fire alarm was activated just before 5 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters arrived and found damage to a set of double doors leading to the storage facility, as well as an awning above and some electrical wires.

Officials were looking into how someone could have gained access to the gated campus.

“I don’t know if it was just kids being kids and someone thought it would be fun to set the school on fire or if it’s a homeless situation,” said resident Curtis Dornei.

School is in summer session and students were expected to arrive at 8:30 a.m. The traditional school year begins after Labor Day.
