Are You Owed Money? County Has $330K Unclaimed

San Diego County has nearly $330,000 in unclaimed refunds and they want the public to search the database to see who is owed money, officials said.

When the county can’t locate property taxpayers or others who may have previously owned property in the County of San Diego in the past five years, they add the refund to an “unclaimed monies list.”

Anyone who may have done business with the county or paid property tax in the past four years may have unclaimed money.

“I feel like the Maytag repairman,” San Diego County Treasurer and Tax Collector Dan McAllister in a statement. “We are waiting for people to claim these funds so that we can refund the money we owe. Time is running out and sadly very few members of the public have stepped forward to claim their funds.”

Sometimes the refunds have been sent to the last known mailing address on file. Other times, checks return uncashed.

In July, the County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office announced it had 4,329 unclaimed accounts that amounted to $413,540 in funds.

On Aug. 15, County officials said only 20 percent of the money in the fund had been claimed. The funds that remain amount of approximately $328,583.66.

If the funds are not claimed by Sept. 8, the money will be returned to the County's General Fund.

To search for your name, go to www.sdtreastax.com. Use the website to find out how file a refund claim or call (877) 829-4732.There is no charge for the service.

Stormtroopers Invade Golden Gate

The Empire was not embarking on an Imperial raid.

More than 60 Stormtroopers crossed the Golden Gate Bridge Saturday to help launch a nonprofit with the goal of raising funds for children battling cancer.

At 7 a.m., a large group clad in Stormtrooper armor gathered near the bridge to support Kevin Doyle complete the final leg of his two-month round-trip walk from San Francisco to Comic Con in San Diego.

"It's breathtaking," Doyle said. "I can't put into words right now the support. The sincere gratitude that people have been showing for what I've been doing is great."

To honor his late wife who died of pancreatic cancer, Doyle, a member of the "Star Wars" costuming fan club 501st Legion, has been walking the Pacific Coast Highway to raise the funds needed to create Eileen's Little Angels, a nonprofit foundation. The couple were extreme Star Wars fans, to such an extent that R2-D2 served as ring-bearer at their wedding.

"I know she'd be proud of me for making this journey and completing my passions from grief to celebration," Doyle said.

Earlier this year, Doyle walked over 600 miles in full Stormtrooper attire from the Rancho Obi-Wan Star Wars Museum in Petaluma to the Comic Con convention in Southern California.

He has now made his way back to the Bay Area, but said it was his first time walking the Golden Gate Bridge.

Doyle hails from Minnesota and came to California to do the walk.

San Diegan's Lip Syncing Video Goes Viral

Siblings are bound  to annoy one another, but one San Diego man took his brotherly duties up a notch when he decided to lip sync for hours during a road trip with his sister in a video that’s gone viral.

As of Saturday evening, Brian Anderson, 29, had nearly 1.5 million views on a YouTube video he made of their journey, "Annoying Road Trip."

In the time lapse video, Brian can be seen lip syncing to a variety of songs – from The Backstreet Boys and Mariah Carey to Taylor Swift and Blink 182 – during a 7-hour road trip as his sister sits unimpressed in the passenger’s seat.

Brian’s sister, Ashley Anderson, looks out the window, eats some snacks and, at times, stares at her brother as he goes for the high notes.

Brian, a La Mesa resident who works as a 911 emergency dispatcher for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, told NBC San Diego the video was shot on Aug. 2 as he and his sister headed to San Jose, Calif., to visit family.

Ashley knew Brian wanted to make a road trip video that day, but he said she had no idea that a massive lip syncing session was looming.

Brian said they were a few hours into the road trip and had just switched driving duties after making a pit stop at a gas station. He had downed a Red Bull energy drink and was hyped.

"I was really into it," Brian said with a laugh. "I was on a good one."

What happened next was more than two hours of non-stop lip syncing and dancing in the car. The
YouTube clip captured almost three time-lapsed minutes of the madness.

Towards the end of the clip, as Brian mouths the words to the theme song from "Friends," Ashley cracks a smile and claps along to the song. Brian said his sister did give in to the silliness at other points during the road trip, though she preferred to do so while the camera wasn’t on.

"She doesn’t like attention that much," he said, adding that he’s the extrovert of the pair, while Ashley is a bit more reserved.

Still, he said he and his sister – who is two years younger – are very close and have a lot of fun together despite having opposite personalities.

"We’re extremely close. I'd do anything for that girl," he added.

Brian said this is the first video he's made that has gone viral. It's been covered by The Huffington Post and MTV, among other big media outlets.

He said both he and Ashley are blown away by the attention their video is getting, and like a true performer, Brian is thinking there may have to be an encore.

"I told Ashley we may have to do a round two video, but she's like, ‘I don’t know about that!'” he laughed.

Trump: Undocumented Immigrants 'Have to Go'

Donald Trump would reverse President Obama's executive orders on immigration and deport all undocumented immigrants from the U.S. as president, he said in an exclusive interview with NBC's Chuck Todd.

"We're going to keep the families together, but they have to go," he said in the interview, which will air in full on NBC's "Meet the Press" this Sunday.

Trump said, to begin, "we have to" rescind Obama's executive order offering those brought to the U.S. illegally as children — known as DREAMers — protection from deportation, as well as Obama's unilateral move to delay deportation for their families as well.

The comments are certain to further inflame already fierce opposition from Latino activists and advocacy groups. They've been critical of Trump's candidacy from the start, when he kicked off his campaign with a speech that accused Mexico of sending "criminals" and "rapists" to the U.S.

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa on Saturday declared a state of emergency following increased activity the day before at the giant Cotopaxi volcano, giving the government greater leeway to mobilize financial resources in the event an eruption.

Two minor explosions on Friday at Cotopaxi, located about 43.5 miles south of Quito, led to a precautionary evacuation of small towns in the center of country.

"We declare a state of emergency due to the unusual activity of Mount Cotopaxi," Correa said during his weekly Saturday address. "God willing, everything will go well and the volcano will not erupt."

Bernie Sanders may not leave Iowa as popular as the pork chop on a stick or fried PBJ — but the Democratic candidate rolled into the Iowa State Fair to a crowd that wrapped around to the back of the soapbox stage to hear him speak on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier in the morning, the Vermont senator spoke at a town hall in Boone, a town about an hour outside of Des Moines.

Sanders called for expanding Social Security by lifting the cap on taxable income, creating a single-payer healthcare system, and pushed back against the government's use of an unemployment rate figure that does not include those who gave up on looking for work and those who are working part time but would like to work full time.

De Blasio Hit the Gym Amid Standoff

$

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio remained at a Brooklyn gym to finish his workout while cops were in the midst of a standoff with a suspect who had shot a firefighter on Staten Island Friday morning, his press office acknowledged.

Deblasio’s press secretary, Karen Hinton, said the Mayor arrived at the Park Slope YMCA at 9 a.m. and remained there for nearly an hour and a half while dozens of police officers engaged in a six-hour standoff with a wanted high-ranking member of the Bloods street gang that began at 6 a.m.

Garland Tyree,38, barricaded himself inside his girlfriend's Staten Island home armed with an AK-47 after shooting FDNY Lt. James S. Hayes. Tyree had earlier lit a commercial-grade smoke bomb inside the residence, prompting firefighters to respond. When Hayes went into the home to investigate, he was shot in left calf and buttocks, officials said.

Meanwhile, de Blasio was at the gym in the Brooklyn neighborhood where his family still owns and rents out the home they lived in before moving into Gracie Mansion in Manhattan.

When NBC 4 New York asked the mayor about his trip trip to the gym during a news conference about the standoff, de Blasio said, "We're briefing you on a very serious situation, and that's just not a serious question."

Hinton later said the mayor was on calls with FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton throughout the morning starting at 7 a.m., and continued receiving updates until he left for Staten Island.

"This includes leaving the gym to make and take a series of calls from approximately 10:40 to 11:15, when he departed for Staten Island," Hinton said in an e-mailed statement. "The mayor has met with the wounded firefighter and his fellow firefighters at the hospital, and will soon update the media on both the situation on the ground in Staten Island and the wounded firefighter’s condition.”

Rev. Michael Faulkner, senior pastor at New Horizon Church of New York in Harlem and a frequent critic of the mayor, pounced on the situation, saying in a statement it showed disrespect to the wounded firefighter and that his actions showed "a serious lack of judgment and common sense during a crisis when we are counting on him for direction and leadership."

"We need a mayor who is accountable and understands that his top priority is serving the people who elected him to office," Hinton said. "We need a mayor who is more concerned with running this city rather than maintaining the size of his waistline."

The union representing FDNY firefighters declined to comment. The president of the only police union that commented, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, said "I am once again saddened for all New Yorkers as to the lack of leadership from City Hall."

De Blasio has received flak in the past for his tardiness to events like the St. Patrick's Day March in the Rockaways, and the ceremony last November for the victims killed in American Airlines Flight 587.

Tyree was to be arrested early Friday morning at his girlfriend's apartment in a two-family Staten Island home by four U.S. Marshals and four New York City detectives for violating parole. But he refused to open the door, officials said, and then ignited a commercial-grade smoke bomb, prompting the officers to call the FDNY.

When FDNY Lt. James S. Hayes arrived at the scene, he spoke with Tyree through the door and entered the apartment before he was shot in the left calf and buttocks, officials said. Hayes, a 31-year veteran of the department, is in stable condition at a hospital and is the first city firefighter to be shot responding to a scene since 1994.

A member of the task force fired once at the home as he dragged Hayes to safety, officials said.

An emergency response team was then called and the house was surrounded as hostage negotiators got to work, getting his sister and girlfriend on the phone — and even flying Tyree's mother in a police helicopter from Delaware to Staten Island, authorities said. Three times before the deadly confrontation, Tyree fired his weapon and officers didn't return fire, Bratton said.

When he did emerge, wearing a bulletproof vest, his shots struck police cars and a neighbor's house, officials said. He was shot and killed in return.

Trump: It Would Be A 'Miracle' If Hillary Continues Run

Donald Trump said in an interview on "Meet the Press" it would be a "miracle" if Hillary Clinton is able to continue her run for president in the wake of the controversy surrounding her use of a private email server to conduct official business as Secretary of State — but if she does, he'll beat her.

"I think [Clinton] may not be able to run, to be honest, because this whole email thing is a horrible thing," he said in the interview.

Trump likened her situation to that of General David Petraeus, who resigned as director of the CIA after his affair with his biographer was uncovered, and later accused to have shared classified materials with her. The controversy surrounding Clinton's email use intensified this month as reports revealed the FBI was investigating the security of her private server.

"General Petraeus, his life has been destroyed. And he did 5% of what she did," Trump said. "So assuming she's able to run — which would be absolutely, to me, a miracle at this point — I will beat her."

The FBI and police are searching for a man who made demands very, very quietly as he robbed a bank in San Diego, earning the fitting nickname, “The Whispering Bandit.”

According to the FBI, The Whispering Bandit robbed a Union Bank at 1201 Fifth Ave. on Thursday around 1:50 p.m.

About five minutes before entering the bank, a surveillance camera captured video of the bandit smoking a cigarette outside the bank, standing near an ATM. He then walked away from the ATM and the front entrance of the bank.

Minutes later, the suspect entered the bank and approached a teller. Investigators said that’s when the bandit – using a low voice and gestures – made a verbal demand for cash from the teller.

After getting some money from the teller, The Whispering Bandit stuffed the cash into his pocket and fled the bank through the B Street lobby door, investigators said. He was last seen walking eastbound.

No one was injured in the heist.

Witnesses described the soft-spoken bank robber as a man in his early 40s with an olive complexion. He was thin, stood at approximately 5 feet 11 inches and had light brown eyes and a scab on his left eyelid. He wore blue jeans and a short sleeve black T-shirt with a design on the front of the Statue of Liberty.

Anyone with information on the bandit’s identity or whereabouts should contact the FBI at (858) 320-1800 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, BASARNAS (the state search and rescue agency), told NBC News that the search efforts for the missing Trigana Air Service flight had seen "zero outcome" and were temporarily suspended for the night due to darkness.

It said the aircraft was carrying 44 adults, five children and five crew when it went missing. All those on board are believed to be Indonesian.

Missing Man's Remains Found in SoCal Desert

The remains of a man missing from his Oceanside home since July 22 were found in a Southern California desert Saturday near the site where his abandoned car was discovered, officials confirmed.

The remains – identified by officials as Nikolaos Christidis, 76 – were found in the Lake Los Angeles area around 10:40 a.m., Oceanside Police Department (OPD) Sgt. Gabe Jimenez said.

On Wednesday, about a mile and a half away from the remains, officials found Christidis' car abandoned in a field.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lancaster Station said the vehicle was mired in soft sand about six or seven miles off a main road. Christidis, however, was not inside.

Deputies searched the area around the vehicle by ground and helicopter for any traces of the missing man to no avail that day. There were no signs of foul play or violence in or around the car, officials said.

After the discovery of the vehicle, two Oceanside police detectives and Christidis' sister traveled  from north San Diego to Lake Los Angeles to help with the search for the missing man, who vanished more than three weeks ago.

Sgt. Jimenez said deputies, police officers and search and rescue crews had been in the desert area surrounding Lake Los Angeles for the past two days searching for Christidis.

Christidis’ home in San Diego’s North County is about 140 miles away from where his abandoned car and remains were found.

On Tuesday, the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) confirmed that Christidis’ last known whereabouts were around Rosamond, Calif., on July 23 – about 36 miles from the desert site.

The OPD said all attempts to contact Christidis since he disappeared by his family and police had failed. Still, police said they did not suspect foul play in his case.

According to police, Christidis was last seen by his daughter at 10 a.m. on July 22, when he returned home with her.

She laid down take a nap. When she woke up around 4 p.m., she found a note from her father saying he would be home late. The next day at 8:26 a.m., Christidis accepted a call from his ex-wife and said he was in Escondido. He told her he would return home in 15 minutes.

But by 10:35 a.m., he had not yet returned, so his daughter gave him a call.

Christidis said he was in the desert and would be home in an hour. When his daughter called him again at about 4 p.m. on July 23, Christidis’ cellphone went straight to voicemail.

His cellphone had been turned off ever since, police said, and no one has heard from him.

Officials said Christidis was last seen on July 22 at 10 a.m. near College Boulevard and State Route 78 in Oceanside. He was driving a black, 2015 Honda Civic with the California license plate of 7JYR793 – the car that turned up in Lake Los Angeles.

Oceanside investigators issued a silver alert across three states so law enforcement and other facilities like hospitals and park rangers would aid in the search for the missing man.

According to police, Christidis has gotten lost on numerous occasions, and in one incident, he ended up in Arizona. Investigators said he has not been clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia and does not suffer from any medical conditions.

Further details of his disappearance were not released by police Saturday. The investigation is ongoing, but the OPD said foul play is not suspected at this time.
